“ The exploration of human
consciousness is the next
great frontier. It emerges from the very core of what it means to be, to perceive,
to experience, to search for meaning. Therefore, what we do at TMI is not ancillary to the human
condition; it is central
and of critical importance.”

SOMETHING OF V ALUE
The Institute's seminar programs, workshops, and related educational materials encourage the evolution and growth of
consciousness through personal experience. These experiences, explorations of consciousness, offer something of value
to the public. As with any credible educational curriculum, participants develop new approaches to ways of thinking and
being, a different overview, a changed perspective from which life itself takes on new significance. With these profound
programs, workshops, and educational materials comes the realization that we are more than our physical bodies.
R OBERT A. MONROE
1915—1995
BEGINNINGS
The Monroe Institute was founded by Robert A. Monroe, a former broad-
casting executive who in 1958 began to undergo spontaneous experiences
that drastically altered his life. One night, he found himself floating over
his physical body via a “second body." He soon learned to explore
locales beyond conventional concepts of time and space. Robert Monroe
documented these experiences in Journeys Out of the Body, (Doubleday,1971; published in eight languages worldwide), in Far Journeys
(Doubleday, 1985), and in Ultimate Journey (Doubleday, 1994).
Robert Monroe formed a research group and began investigating methodsand techniques of accelerated learning in the late 1950s. That investigation
led to remarkable discoveries dealing with the very nature of human con-sciousness and an audio-guidance technology that provides its users the
opportunity to achieve personal goals by facilitating and sustaining a focused,
highly productive, coherent mind-brain state.
In the early 1970s, The Monroe Institute evolved from the original research
group and began conducting learning seminars in the exploration of con-
sciousness using the audio-guidance technology. These seminars were held at
various sites in the United States and abroad until 1979, when a permanent
facility was built in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Thousands of people have attended the Institute’s life-enhancing residential
seminar programs and workshops. Worldwide, millions more have benefited
from "Outreach" workshops and audio-guidance educational materials, learning
exercises available for home-use in a variety of audio formats.
The Monroe Institute, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, operates as an
education and research organization dedicated to the exploration of human
consciousness and the welfare of humankind. Charitable activities include
college scholarships and donations to other selected nonprofit organizations, as
well as providing information, material support and publication of like-minded
consciousness research efforts.

THE W AY TODAY
The Monroe Institute’s residential programs are conducted at the Nancy Penn Center and at Roberts Mountain Retreat.
Located in the pastoral foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, these special facilities were constructed to maximize the
effectiveness of the audio-guidance process and to provide a uniquely supportive environment for personal exploration.
THE NANCY PENN CENTER
This residential center houses 24 participants and offers each the use
of a private CHEC (Controlled Holistic Environmental Chamber)
unit. The CHEC unit provides isolation from light and extraneous
sounds. Inside the CHEC units, participants lie down and relax in
solitude, and it is here that the learning adventure begins. Under the
direction of a team of experienced facilitators, an audio network feeds
special audio-guidance exercises to each unit. These exercises are
received through headphones or speakers. Each CHEC unit contains
lighting that can be adjusted in both color and intensity. The CHECunit is also used as a place for sleep. Supported throughout the night
by relaxing and soothing sounds from an overhead speaker system,
participants awaken refreshed, energized, and ready to meet the new
experiences of the day.
The Nancy Penn Center has full dining facilities, the Fox Den,
a debriefing room for group discussions, and exercise and
massage rooms. The roof deck offers panoramic views of the Blue
Ridge and the stars at night. Evening presentations are held in David
Francis Hall, complete with audiovisual facilities for large-screenmultimedia presentations.
The Bob Monroe Research Lab is housed in an adjacent building.
It is here that basic research, the heart of past and future activities
of the organization, is conducted. Guidelines program participantsexperience a Personal Resources Exploration Program(PREP)session conducted in the lab’s specially designed isolation booth.
Program participants can enjoy forest walking trails, meditation spots
along a creek and atop the ridges, and swimming in Lake Miranon.
“Before Gateway, I left home to go somewhere.
I learned I left somewhere and found home.”
— a Gateway participant
For many program graduates, the Center has
become a symbol of home and of freedom.

Each exercise is monitored by a program trainer.

ROBERTS MOUNTAIN RETREAT
Robert and Nancy Monroe’s former home has been
transformed into an extension of The Monroe Institute
to accommodate the increased demand for advanced
programs. Located approximately two miles from the
Nancy Penn Center, Roberts Mountain Retreat pro-
vides spectacular views and an intimate homelike
ambience.
In addition to the renovation of Bob and Nancy’s ele-
gant residence, an annex facility with additional
CHEC units was constructed to provide a comfortable
and inviting setting for twenty participants to navigate
their inner landscapes.
Participants have the opportunity to attend sessions in
the log cabin where Bob Monroe worked and wrote
his third book, Ultimate Journey. A new isolation
chamber extends outward from Bob’s cabin. The booth is
equipped for physiological monitoring of individuals
exploring expanded states of awareness.
During breaks, participants may enjoy breathtaking
scenery or relax by a soothing water garden for addi-
tional inspiration. Nature trails and a swimming pool
are also available for exercise and relaxation.
“I have taken and enjoyed both the Gateway and the Lifeline
programs at The Monroe Institute, and have used the tech-
niques I learned there in both my personal and my professional
life. Robert Monroe’s work, now expertly carried out by his suc-
cessors, provides shortcuts to deeper states of consciousness
that take years of meditation to reach.”

OUR R ESEARCH: THE SCIENCE OF SOUND
Research conducted by The Monroe Institute is directed solely to the development of methods and techniques that will
aid others in the evolution and growth of human consciousness. Conventional scientific procedures are employed when-
ever feasible, but research is not limited to such processes. With the use of two systems of measurement, conventional
and non-conventional, it is possible to validate much of TMI’s methods and techniques by standards of interest to theconventional scientist and researcher. This dual system often brings forth information and data not encountered or under
stood through typical studies. It is such material that stimulates even greater research effort.
5
Research on the audio-guidance process has been ongoing for over four
decades. Today this effort is concentrated in three distinct areas:
• Clinical and applied research done by members of the
Institute’s Professional Membership.
• Research done by universities and institutional laboratories.
• Applied and technical research done at the Institute.
Thanks to the cooperation of notable professionals, medical institutions,
and universities, the scientifically proven and clinically applied audio-
guidance technology has earned international acclaim and continues to
be the focus of a variety of specialized research projects.

S TR AT EG IC PA RT NE RS I N T HE E VO LU TI ON O F H UM AN C ON SC IO US NE SS
The Monroe Institute (TMI) and the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) have joined together to
offer TMI programs at IONS’ transformative learning center in scenic Petaluma, CA.
TMI and IONS are dedicated to the exploration of human consciousness and discovering the
many possibilities of human potential that may enhance our evolution on the planet. TMI
programs are a method of discovery where one can explore different states of conscious-
ness through direct experience. By exploring our internal world, we are able to understand in
greater depth the nature of our own reality and our relationship to the universe.
The scientifically-based and clinically proven audio-guidance technology is utilized as a tool to
access nonordinary states of awareness that assist us in knowing that we are more than our
physical bodies. Let aTMI programs guide you on your own personal journey inward.

OUR RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS
The Monroe Institute’s residential programs are dedicated to the development of human consciousness. Through explor-
ing profound states of expanded awareness, the individual comes to know and better understand his or her total self.
TMI does not provide a new belief system, and individuals from all walks of life, professions, and religious backgrounds
have attended TMI programs. The only philosophical point you are asked to consider as a serious possibility is that you
are more than your physical body.
“One Gateway Voyage alumnus, the ninety-one-year-old head of a Zen Buddhist temple...believes that
Gateway Voyage students can reach meditation states in a week that took him years of sitting.
His temple now uses audio cassettes from The Monroe Institute as a training tool.”
—The Wall Street Journal
THE G ATEWAY V OYAGE
The heart of The Monroe Institute programs is the Gateway Voyage.
This six-d ay intensive learning adventure is a prerequisite for all other
residential programs and provides participants with tools for:
• development and exploration of human consciousness
• expansion of one’s awareness
• willful control of that awareness
• deeper levels of self-discovery
• communication with and visits to other energy systems and
realities
You are introduced to:
Focus 10: the first stage in separation of mind-consciousness from
physical reality. “Mind awake/body asleep” is a deeply relaxed state
in which your awareness of physical sensory input is reduced, yet the
mind is alert and attentive to experience. This gives birth to an aware-
ness that you exist with or without the physical body.
Focus 12: a state of expanded awareness in which you can become
more conscious of inner resources and guidance; a powerful and empow-
ering state which readily lends itself to many diverse applications.
Focus 15: a state of “no time” in which you explore beyond the
constraints of time and place. Opportunities are abundant for establish-
ing communication with larger aspects of self.
Focus 21: like deep (delta) sleep, but with a significant difference. You
are fully “awake” and conscious, directing the action, as you exploremore deeply your personal self and the far reaches of other realities.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines offers still another step in the development of a more complete understand-
ing of self. The theme of Guidelines is to assist the individual in learning methods
through which communication can be established with one’s Total Self, Inner Self
Helper, Guidance, NonPhysical Friends or Universal Consciousness. With practice, a person can learn to access quickly and directly whatever information is needed. Our
goal is to make such lines of communication as natural as possible, so that during a
business meeting, for example, one can calmly and serenely access the communication
skills learned and apply them appropriately within the context of the situation.
Also included is direct training relating to the ability to work in partnership with
nonphysical energy to heal oneself and others. In an isolation booth equipped
with physiological monitoring devices, each participant has a Personal Resources
Exploration Program (PREP) session during the Guidelines program.
L IFELINE
Lifeline participants experience validation that they will survive physical death,
and become familiar with the pathways that lie beyond physical reality. You
explore additional Focus levels:
Focus 22: where humans still in the physical can have partial consciousness, remem-
bered as dreams, deliriums, and patterns induced through chemicals.
Focus 23: inhabited by humans who have recently exited physical existence and have
not adapted to such change.
Focus 25: the Belief System territories where those who have exited the physical areresiding in a particular belief system.
Focus 27: the Reception Center, Way Station, or Park, designed to ease the trauma
and shock of the transition out of physical reality.
Lifeline is a multifaceted graduate program with service as a primary emphasis.
Service Here by sending healing energy to those who request it, and service There
by making contact with departed souls who need assistance in moving forward.
Many participants realize that they are also retrieving lost parts and fragments of
themselves and thus coming into more wholeness, completion, and balance.
EXPLORATION 27 Exploration 27 provides a week of immersion within Focus 27. While there, par-
ticipants explore the Education Center, Healing and Regeneration Center, and
Planning Center, and receive information relevant to their own personal quests as
well as insights relating to the “larger picture.” Special features include visits to
the center of the Earth—a sacred journey often filled with revelations and appre-
ciation for our Mother and her many precious gifts. Opportunities also allow for
exploration beyond Focus 27 into previously uncharted territories. Open only to
graduates of Lifeline.

“Bob devoted the last 30 years of
his life to sharing what he had
learned with others, while he kept
experimenting and learning him-
self. The Monroe Institute and its
training programs are as great a
testament to his competence and
kindness as could be given. Many
people have had deep experiences
which have markedly enhanced
the spiritual aspects of their lives
in these programs. His books have
had, and continue to have, an even
wider reach. These legacies are
not just a great gift to knowledge,
but a real service to people who
are plagued by doubts and unful-
filled spiritual longings.”
—Charles T. Tart, PhD, interna-
tionally known for his research
and books on altered states of
consciousness.

MEMBERSHIPS
Program and workshop tuition, purchases of related educational materials, and tax-deductible donations all serve tofurththe benevolent work of The Monroe Institute. Membership is yet another way to give something of value to others. You
membership fees support the Institute while at the same time providing an objective declaration of your personal intent to
participate in the evolution of human consciousness.
HEARTLINE
This graduate program is about creating heartspace, self love,
self trust, and nonjudgmental acceptance. Using a basic down-
to-earth approach and inner processing, participants utilize the
tools and Focus levels that have already proven to be so effec-
tive. Learning that we are indeed more than our physical bodies
assists with understanding that we are more than our emotional
bodies and our personalities. In order to achieve this, it is neces-
sary to explore those areas within that prevent basic self-trust and
self-acceptance. Through Heartline, participants learn to let go of
their blocks; the energetic shields they hold in order to protect
themselves and their hearts from old and new perceived fears.
Heartline is not about renouncing the left brain or rational self. It
is an invitation to open, welcome, and allow the heart—the feel-
ing connection—to come into balance and thereby move into a
greater wholeness and expanded awareness of self.
OTHER PROGRAMS
The Institute offers residential programs other than those discussed
here and new programs are always being designed and implemented
on an on-going basis. Please visit our website for information on
these programs as well as programs in German, French, Spanish,
Japanese, and more. David Francis Hall
