Stonehill Tigers Win Gold at ISACI Middle School Football Tournament

Our Middle School Girls and Boys football teams took home the gold this past weekend, beating the

teams from Delhi, Pune and Hyderabad. We’re very proud of our teams who played with skill,

teamwork and great sportsmanship. This is a commendable achievement for our teams – many of

whom participated for the first time in this tournament.

We are very proud of the teams and their amazing performances during all their matches and the

fact that both our boys and girls teams won every match they played!

When they got on to the football pitch they were outstanding and no team could match their skill

level. Congratulations to our SIS girls team for not conceding a single goal and the SIS boys for

scoring the most goals in the tournament! The Stonehill International Middle School Football teams

have an exciting future ahead of them.

Lost Property During PHE Classes

Dear Parents,

If your child/children misplace their belongings during a PHE lesson, it will now be taken to the PHE

office to be stored safely. If this happens, please ensure your son or daughter comes to the PHE

office to speak to a member of the PHE Department. We will then go through the lost property with

your child and return any lost belongings.

Under no circumstances should a student enter the PHE office without a PHE member of staff being

present. This is to ensure that the lost property is appropriately regulated.

Please also remind your child about the importance of taking responsibility for their own belongings

and ensure that their full name is on every item, so they can be easily identified.

ASA News

The Second Round of ASAs will run from Tuesday, 20th February through Thursday, 24th May.

The ASAs are between 3:00 to 3:55pm on both Tuesdays & Thursdays and the school buses will

leave the campus at 4:10pm.

Permanent Gate Passes

• All students who opt out of ASAs for Tuesday or Thursday (or both days in some cases), will be

issued a permanent gate pass. This should be collected from Ms. Nijika (for Primary students) or

Ms. Sneha (for Secondary students) between 3:00 – 3:15pm.

• The gate pass should be handed over to Security at the main gate.

• All students opting out of ASA should leave the school campus by 3:15pm at the latest. If a

student is unable to leave (due to transport issues) they must go to the Secondary Library and

wait there. No student should remain unsupervised on the campus during ASAs.

• A temporary gate pass will be issued to students who may have to miss their ASA for

unavoidable circumstances. In such cases, the parent must notify Ms. Sneha, Ms. Nijika or the

student’s Homeroom/Class Teacher of this, via email. Temporary gate passes will not be issued

unless the school has been informed by the parent.

Stonehill Instrumental Music Programme

Have you or your child secretly dreamt of being a musician? If so here is your opportunity to make

this dream come alive!

Stonehill International School has a dynamic Instrument Tuition Programme which encourages

students to pursue their musical talent with specialised assistance. Students and parents can sign up

for thirty minute lessons that are delivered by one or more of three teachers. Our team of highly

accomplished and specialised musicians/teachers include Mr. Uday Zachariah, Mr. James Stephenus

and Mr. Siby Manuel. The main aim of this programme is to provide opportunities for students to

learn from professional musicians who are actively involved in the Bangalore music circle, as well as

having performed internationally.

Mr. Zachariah teaches the Piano and Keyboard. He is

currently in his 4th year at Stonehill. After completing 4

grades of Piano at ABRSM in Oman, Uday went on for

advanced studies in Music Technology at SAE Institute

(School of Audio Engineering) under the affiliation of

Middlesex University. He also went on to be a freelance

music producer and his job comprised of skills such as song

writing, music scoring for TV & Radio commercials, sound

editing, sound designing, and advance training in music

technology. His musical influences are Romantic, 20th & 21st

Century, Classic Rock, Easy Jazz, Pop, Blues, Broadway

Musicals, and Themes from Movies and TV. He enjoys

working with children not only in terms of teaching piano

and keyboards but also with technology related activities

such as movie making.

Mr. James Stephenus has been teaching music for

over ten years. He has been a member of many

bands and is currently playing for the metalcore

band - Final Surrender. He is also a session

guitarist for studios having played on multiple

albums and artists with diverse styles. He is

passionate about music and is always looking to

impart the knowledge that he has accumulated

over the years. He teaches guitar, voice and

drums.

Siby Manuel teaches Violin, Viola and Cello. He started learning music at the age of 12. Later he

joined Ms. Giselle Voigts on a musical journey and has been taught and mentored by her. He has been

teaching music for over ten years. Apart from teaching, he performs with Grammy award winners

Rickey Kej and Manoj George for both live shows and as well as studio recordings. He also plays

with The BSM Chamber Orchestra. He teaches cello, viola and violin.

PYP Visual Arts Exhibition - A Time for Reflection and Sharing

Thank you to all of the parents, students and staff members who visited the PYP Visual Arts

Exhibition on Friday, February 2nd in the Primary Hall. It was nice to see so many parents and

students talking about art.

Visual Arts exhibitions are important for two reasons. First, students have an opportunity to show

their family something special they have made. Second, a Visual Arts exhibition is an occasion for

reflection.

Researchers from Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education have identified reflection as

one of the important skills that students learn in a Visual Arts studio (Hetland, 2013). Discussing

visual works of art produces an environment conducive to students reflecting on their creative

intentions, talking about their process and evaluating their results. In the context of creative

thinking and the design process, these steps are powerful. Reflection develops metacognition,

supports self-evaluation, encourages metaphorical thinking and gives students the vocabulary they

need to talk about intentions, process, results, etc. For our PYP exhibition, students from P3 to P8

created artist statements reflecting on their artwork and added further details in discussions with

their parents, providing opportunities for growth and development through reflection.

How can we foster a supportive environment that encourages reflection throughout the year? As

students bring home artworks and projects, parents and other family members can promote

reflection by asking open-ended questions such as “Tell me how you got the idea for this piece,”

“How did you make this?”, “Tell me about your favourite part.”, etc.

Working together, we can support students to develop their reflection skills and to embolden their

creative thinking.

Student-led Conferences

I would like to thank you all for your positive participation in Friday’s Student-led Conferences. We

all enjoyed hearing the children sharing and celebrating their learning. We received some excellent

feedback from parents, including some constructive suggestions for improving the day next year.

Below are our favourite comments provided by primary parents.

• The conference was well-organised. The teacher was very well prepared and knew my child

well. The activities were appropriate and engaging. I also appreciated the time, love and

attention that clearly went into the Art Exhibition. Great work Team Stonehill!

• My child gained confidence from showing all she had learned. I very much enjoyed seeing her

progress in different subjects.

• He was really proud showing all he'd learned, a very positive experience!

• I feel that my son is very proud and happy when given the chance to guide us through the

classrooms, showing his achievements and describing them in his own words. A well prepared

day full of positive energy!!

• Many activities were available for children to share with their parents with clear instructions

showing how to support their learning.

• Really student-led with guidance from the teacher. Excellent!

• Organisation was great as well as the way the kids were prepared to lead the conference.

• I like the fact that kids are in charge of the “show”. It builds their confidence.

• It was very funny, I want to say thank you for this beautiful opportunity.

• It was a good experience for us to understand what my daughter is learning and the fact she is

able to demonstrate her learning.

• The SLC was organised well by the teacher and I am very happy with the learning outcomes

demonstrated.

• I could see a great improvement in presentation skills and her confidence is better.

• We enjoyed watching our child showcase different areas of learning at the various stations

prepared for them.

• I liked seeing the child confident about what he has learnt.

• Wonderful initiative.

• It was interesting to see how my son has been able to express what he has learnt during the

course of the year. It gives parents an insight into their child.

PYP Parent Workshop

Primary parents are invited to attend a workshop focusing on how we teach literacy skills

throughout the primary age-range. The workshop takes place on Wednesday, 14th February at

8:00am. Refreshments will be provided.

The Learning Hub

On Saturday 10th February, Stonehill will host over sixty international teachers, PYP Coordinators

and Principals from across India for a professional development event titled The Learning Hub.

Workshops will include things such as ‘Cultivating Innovation and Creativity in the Classroom’ and

‘Integrating Technology in the Inquiry Classroom’. This will be Stonehill’s first Learning Hub event.

We plan to make this a yearly opportunity for our teachers to share good practice and connect with

international educators across the country.

Semester One Reports

Our Semester One Reports, for students in M1 to D1, will be issued on Friday, 9th February 2018.

These are full written reports for each subject and cover the work students have been doing for

the entire semester. Please contact Ms Saathi Vinay (saathi.vinay@stonehill.in) if you have not

been able to access the reports.

MYP Mathematics Workshop

There was a great turn out for the MYP

Mathematics workshop on Thursday, 8

February. Thank you to the twenty parents

eager to learn more about how Maths is

taught here at Stonehill. There was a short

presentation which covered the investigative

approach, the different types of assessment,

the assessment criteria, the use of

technology, the inclusion of ATLs and the

need to be a Thinker.

After the presentation parents were given the opportunity to experience the different types of

learning for themselves as well as being able to view the textbooks, typical assessments,

challenge problems and the technology used. Overall, the parents were able to leave with a better

understanding of what Maths is like for their children in the MYP.

ISACI Middle School Sports Festival

ISACI Middle School Sports Festival was held on 2nd and 3rd of February. Thank you to the PHE

department and Kerstin, our sports coordinator for organising this event. Our school came first in

Boys and Girls soccer and second in Girls basketball and fourth in Boys basketball. Congratulations

to all our students who participated and the coaches.

Staff Professional Development

Please note that Friday, 23rd February is a normal school day for all students.

Friday, 2nd March, is a Professional Development day for teachers. Therefore, the school will be

closed on 2nd March for all students. In addition, IB regional workshops will be taking place at the

school from 2nd – 4th March. The school will re-open on Monday, 5th March for all students.

Trips week will take place from 11th/12th to 16th February 2018. Each group has a website which

will be updated daily (subject to Internet connectivity). These links have already been shared with

all parents, along with other relevant information via email.

been shared with all parents via email on Thursday, 8th February. Two trip groups are leaving on

Sunday, while all other trip groups are leaving on Monday, 12th February. All trip groups will return

on Friday, 16th February except the Jaipur trip (M3) which returns on Thursday night.

D2 Mock Exams

The D2 practice examinations commenced on Friday, 9th February and end on Friday, 16th

February. We wish all our students the very best.

Issues or Concerns Regarding Your Child/Children

If your son/daughter has any problems at school, please contact (by email) their Homeroom

Teacher or the relevant Subject Teacher directly in the first instance, and then the Head of

Department or appropriate Coordinator (MYP or DP) if required. Please do not call on their personal

mobile number at home or during class time.

Early Leave and Late Return after School Holidays

There are several parents who book tickets and then inform the school that their child will miss

school due to flights. This is not acceptable and will be treated as unauthorised absence.

Parents are NOT encouraged to withdraw children during term-time for vacations. Parents are also

asked not to ‘leave early’ or ‘return late’ in order to extend scheduled school holidays. In cases

where students will miss routine classes because of voluntary absence, the school does not

provide extra work for them to take on vacation.

The school is sometimes asked to ‘authorise’ absences during school time for family vacations or

other trips. It is not the school’s policy to do so.

News from the Science Department

The Science Department has been very busy in the two months since you have heard from us in the

Tiger. Read on to catch up on all the exciting activities and learning that has taken place.

On January 15th, the Science Department at Stonehill conducted a workshop for MYP parents to

showcase and explain the teaching and learning that takess place in the MYP Science classrooms.

This was successfully managed by alternating presentations with group work, involving participants

in activities like ‘Investigating a black box’, ‘Who am I’, ‘Mind Mapping’ and so on.

M1 students have been exploring the Earth and Solar System. Currently, the students have been

divided into groups and are exploring the nebular hypothesis and how it takes into account the

exceptions such as Venus’ tilted rotation and the orbit of the comets under the able guidance of

Ms. Aditi.

M2 students from Ms. Aditi’s class have been planning and conducting investigations on the factors

that affect light absorption. They added food colouring in different concentrations, used different

food colourings (red, yellow, green and blue) and impurities, such as salt and water, and carried out

experiments to determine the extent to which light is absorbed. Interesting links to real life included

the penetration of light in the ocean and the colour of our clothes during specific times of the year,

to name a few.

Students of M3 have just completed a unit on Heat. In this unit, the students investigated the

factors that affect the rate of cooling of a cup of coffee. They also designed an eco-friendly, energy

efficient house for cold countries. They used a computer programme called Tinkercad to design the

houses and then created a prototype. Students have used Lego blocks, regular household materials,

as well as the 3D printer to generate these models.

In Physics, M4 students are studying the topic of ‘Work, Energy and Power’ and are looking into

the process of energy conversion. They are using a Java simulation to explore how energy is

transformed from one form to the other – an example of technology aided education. Below is a

snapshot from the simulation:

Shortly, they will embark upon a journey to research on the effect of ever increasing need for

energy on the environment.

M4B students have been learning about the rate of a reaction and the relationship between surface

area, temperature and concentration. They have conducted experiments to determine how the rate

of a reaction can be increased.

Our M5 Physics students are studying subatomic particles and appreciating the fact that smaller

things can be mightier. Presently, the students are investigating the random nature of radioactive

decay by using a rolling dice and calculating the half-life from the decay curve. Next they will be

making documentary films to answer the question ‘Nuclear energy, a friend or a foe?’

D1 students, on the other hand, are designing rockets and potato guns to demonstrate their

understanding of Newton's Third Law and Principle of Conservation of Momentum. Once the

students complete creating these prototypes, they will be launched and tested in the football field.

These rockets and guns will be tested and evaluated upon their range, height and their

understanding of Physics principles.

Stonehill Hackathon

A hackathon or a codeathon is an event where

teams of developers get together to come up with

solutions to problems. These solutions involve

robots, machine learning algorithms, mobile and

web apps, websites, the possibilities are endless.

For the most part, there is only one constraint –

time.

We are proud to announce that Stonehill

International School will be hosting our first 6-

hour-hackathon on the Monday, 26th February.

We will be inviting students from other schools in

Bangalore. You too, can team up with up to 4

others to form a team, and win a grand prize of

Rs 15,000!

are a novice or an expert at programming and

ISACI Middle School Basketball – From the Coach’s Viewpoint

Another ISACI basketball season came to an end with the ISACI Middle School Festival. Finally,

after 6 seasons of being the basketball coach for Stonehill, I had the chance to take advantage of

home support.

Unfortunately for our boys’ team, despite the home team support and cheer, they went down

fighting in all 3 games with our closest contest coming against The British School, New Delhi (TBS).

TBS were more clinical against the home team in a hard fought game, which ended 24-19 in favour

of TBS. In our other games, the will and determination of the talented International School

Hyderabad (ISH) and Mercedes-Benz International School, Pune (MBIS) teams were just too much to

handle for our Tigers. Despite our boys showing glimpses of potential, unfortunately, they lost both

games. The effort was evident, but this year was not meant to be our year as we had to give up

our first place honours from last season to ISH, who played a very skilled and determined game.

The Girls Middle School ISACI basketball team, fresh from their dominance on the football field the

day before, soaked up all of that unwavering home support. They showed everyone our far superior

team chemistry and a strong mental understanding of how to play the game. The team brought

their A-Game to the basketball court and showed a Tigress will fight fiercely. The girls gave us

three nail-biting encounters against our opponents, with all the matches going to the final buzzer.

Our team secured the Silver (Second Place) in the tournament. They beat ISH and TBS and came

extremely close to beating MBIS, losing the Gold to them by only 2 points. This marks the second

consecutive year they have secured the Silver – next year they go for Gold!

A big shout out to the P.E. Department and the parents that made this Middle School ISACI

Tournament 2018 a memorable one for everyone involved. Special thanks to Ms. Kerstin Bender for

being the backbone of both the School teams and Danish our Student-Coach.
