My dear parishioners, The month of November is especially dedicated to the ho-ly souls in purgatory. During this month, the Church asks us to remember and pray for all the souls of the faithful departed now undergoing the final, spiritual purification needed to see God “as he is” (1 Jn 3:2). It is a consoling truth of our Catholic faith that we are both aided by the prayers of the saints in heaven and able to aid the souls in purgatory by our own prayers on earth. As we pray for the holy souls in purgatory, we are also invited to reflect upon the fact of our own mortality and meeting with the Lord after death. At this time of year, the leaves changing colors and falling to the ground are a natural reminder to us that our lives will show their “true colors” when they come to an end. St. Augustine said: “As your life is, thus will your end be.” As Christians, what should our attitude be as we face the sobering reality of death? We must recall, first, that death is a con-sequence of original sin. St. Ambrose, one of the Fathers and Doc-tors of the Church, wrote: “God did not decree death from the be-ginning; he prescribed it as a remedy. Human life was condemned because of sin to unremitting labor and unbearable sorrow and so began to experience the burden of wretchedness. There had to be a limit to its evils; death had to restore what life had forfeited. With-out the assistance of grace, immortality is more of a burden than a blessing.” Through death, our souls (made holy by God’s grace) are able to enter their eternal dwelling with God in heaven. Second, because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we have the sure and certain hope that, at the end of time, our holy souls will be reunited to our bodies at the resurrection. Our risen bodies will be glorious like Our Lord’s own risen body and no longer experience suffering or death. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of this central truth of the resurrection, which we find in the Old Testament as well as in the New: “That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called ‘Lord’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive” (Lk 20:37-38). Strengthened by this hope, “may the Lord direct [our] hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ” (2 Thes 3:5).
