A GREETING FROM ANDREW D. WHITEOn the eightieth birthday anniversary of Former President Andrew D. White,

November 7, 1912, the Secretar}^, on behalf of the class, conveyed to Dr. Whitethe congratulations and best wishes of the members of '93. In reply to this

message the Secretary received the following, which he now passes on:

"Your old friend, whose eightieth birthday has been made happy by so manykind messages that his hand fails him to indite all that he would gladly say, begs

you to accept this expression of gratitude, which comes none the less from his

heart, for the great kindness which Cornellians and other friends have shown him,

now as ever. May Heaven bless you, with all those dear to you, and grant to each

and all many happy returns of this New Year's Day."

THE FOURTH REUNIONThe twenty-year reunion of the class was held in Ithaca on Saturday, June 14,

1913. The class headquarters were at Mrs. Jeremiassen's, No. 522 Stewart

Avenue. A special hatband was used, of white and old gold, the class colors, with

'93 in carnelian printed thereon.

After the alumni luncheon in the new Auditorium, the class proceeded in twochartered trolley cars, accompanied by the Ithaca Band, to Percy Field, where the

baseball game was in progress. After the game the picture forming the frontis-

piece was taken by Sheldon. The key to this follows

:

pects of republican government. Katte acted as toastmaster. Stebbins was

re-elected to the Cornellian Council. It was voted to create the '93 Memorial

Fund, the principal of which is to be kept intact and is to be given to the Univer-

sity through the Cornellian Council. Several letters of regrets were read by the

Secretary.

Others who participated in the reunion were G. L. Baldwin, Olmsted, Coville,

THE '93 MEMORIAL FUNDAs stated above, the class has officially created the '93 Memorial Fund, the

income from which is to be devoted to the support of the University, and which

is to be collected and turned over to the Trustees by the Comellian Council.

According to the last report of the Council, July ist, 1912, there were thirty-five

'93 men subscribing annually $361 ; this annual amount is to form the nucleus

of the Fund. It is hoped that for both the glory of '93 and the benefit of AlmaMater, who needs our gifts, every member of '93 will subscribe what he or she is

able to give, in order that the Fund may become creditably large.

To illustrate the need of the University, it may be said that in five years the

number of students has increased from 3734 to 4803 (not counting 597 short

course winter students and 1254 Summer School students), a gain of 28.3 per cent.,

while the Faculty has increased only from 114 professors, 67 assistant professors,

and 367 lecturers, instructors, and assistants to 115 professors, 88 assistant

professors, and 373 lecturers, instructors, and assistants, a gain in numbers of 5.1

per cent. The amount paid for salaries has increased only from $627,160.84 to

$767,161.46, a gain of 22.3 per cent. The income of the University has during

this period (1907-12) increased, it is true, from $1,270,875.67 to $2,267,534.67

(including $478,000.11 received from New York State for the two state colleges);

yet the expenses have grown so much more rapidly that on August i, 19 12, there

was a deficit of $160,358.11. The productive funds of the University have

increased from $8,550,716.84 to $9,523,405.50, a gain of only 11.3 percent. Unless

the alumni come to the rescue, under the present policy of admitting all whoqualify for entrance, the standards can hardly fail to be lowered and the quality of

instruction will certainly deteriorate. The reputation of the University is at

stake; and '93 must do her share in seeing to it that the Cornell diploma is never

cheapened.

THE ROSTERIn the following list the Secretary has been unable to furnish more than the

names, occupations, and addresses. In the interest of economy it was thought

unwise to print more at present ; at the time the first letter was sent out the';e was

very little money in the treasury. The Secretary hopes in 191 8 to publish a fuller

account of our activities.

The list contains in all 563 names. Of these, 37 who took a degree in 1893

belong actually or by preference to other classes.

The following 45 are known to have died: Baker, Blackmer, Brussel, D. B.

Clark, H. D. Clark, Clauss, Cohen, Miss Colt, Connard, Miss Connolly, Cruick-

shanks, R. Dimmick, E. M. Fulton, Geer, F.W. Hall, Halsey, P. C. Harris, Hatcher,

Ramsey, Shantz, Southworth, Springer, C. E. Strong, Thurston, Miss Todd,

Toerring, W. H. Watson, Whetstone, Wilkins, Witherbee.

The following have been lost, and the Secretary will be grateful for any in-

formation as to their whereabouts: H. C. Allen, H. T. Bassett, J. V. Bohn,

L. G. Browne, W. H. Colby, R. G. ColHns, Jr., Miss Cooke, Countess

Dumolin, E. W. Fritz, G. N. Graham, Miss Hardin, Miss Livingston, Mrs.

McEldowney, McGerald, R. O. Morrison, K. Nakayama, Mrs. Rodakiewicz,

L. A. Stedman, J. J. Stevens, S. B. Thompson, O. Tsuji, Miss G. Wilder,

In 1889-90 there were registered 411 freshmen (including 55 registered back

from other classes) and 42 entering specials. In 1891-92 there were registered

68 juniors in Law. That is, 466 students entered with '93.

In 1893 there were 312 baccalaureate and 46 advanced degrees conferred, as

follows: A.B.,39; Ph.B.,26; B.L.,30; B.S., 26; B.S. in Agr.,3; B.S. in Arch.,

8; C.E.,25; M.E.,93; LL.B.,62; A.M., 4; M.L.,3; M.S., 4; M.S. in Agr., 2;

M.C.E., 2; M.M.E., 14; LL.M., 11; D.Sc, 2; Ph.D., 4.

All addresses unless otherwise indicated are in New York State.

In response to his two circular letters of April 5 and May 26, 1913, the Secre-

tary received contributions from 74 members of the class (see the Financial

Report) and letters or cards from 34 others. The number heard from was there-

fore less than one-fourth of the whole number of living members (481). For the

addresses and occupations of the remainder the Secretary has relied chiefly upon

Secretary Dugan's records, and desires to express his gratitude for the courtesies

extended him at Mr. Dugan's office.

"The first ten years out from college I taught as grammar school principal and

spent much of my time helping my father in his business. At the outset of the

second ten-year period, I changed from grade work to high school science teaching.

I broke away from the old homestead, married, and started West. The first year,

I taught the sciences in the Lebanon, Indiana, High School. That summer I

attended the Cornell Summer School and met a few members of the class of 1893,

Then followed two years as Science Instructor in the University of Arizona. After

the Earthquake (everything here dates from the Earthquake) I became part of the

faculty of the Alhambra Union High School at Martinez, California, where I have

taught the past seven years. Two years ago I was given a Master's degree by the

University of California for work done under the Department of Geology. . .

We own our own home and have a daughter nearly five years old. We enjoy the

delightful California climate, where roses bloom throughout the year. . . I

will consider myself with the reunion in spirit if not in person."
