  • THE ISLAND

    Photo: Toby Oxborrow

Located on the south coast of Bali, Denpasar is the regional capital and the main gateway to Indonesia’s mostpopular holiday island. The city is a main business andadministrative centre, and is home to a mixed populationof Balinese, Javanese and other immigrants fromelsewhere in the archipelago. Most visitors head for theneighbouring resort areas of Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Duawhere most of the island’s hotels, restaurants, shoppingfacilities and nightlife are located.

Jalan Gajah Mada is the city’s main thoroughfare, running east to west, and is usually jam-packed with trac.Puputan Square is the hub of downtown Denpasar, withlawns and greenery, and is dominated by the elaborateGovernor’s Residence, the Bali Museum, and a monumentdedicated to the royalty of Bali who were gunned down byDutch ries here in 1906.

Kuta, Bali’s rst and largest resort, lies a few kilometres southwest of the capital, and has spread from its originalcore for almost 20 kilometres along the coast, mergingwith neighbouring Legian. It has a number of upscalehotels, but is mainly popular with budget and mid-rangetravellers. Its main attraction is its superb beach, which isfamed for its surf, but Kuta also has a huge choice ofrestaurants, bars, colourful shops, nightlife and places tostay.

Sanur, east of Denpasar on the south coast, is a more

recent development and is less raucous and a little moreup-market than Kuta. It has fewer late-night bars andbudget guesthouses and more mid-range resort hotels, but, like Kuta, it has superb beaches.

The Nusa Dua peninsula, which dangles from the south coast, is the epicentre of a planned resort area, with aselection of large, self-contained luxury resort hotels. Northof Denpasar (less than an hour’s drive from the airport)amid green valleys and rice elds, the hill resort of Ubudhas excellent shopping, some of the world’s nestboutique hotels, and a slightly cooler climate than thecapital and its satellite resorts.

Cruise ships, excursion boats and some inter-island ferriesleave from Tanjung Benoa, south of Denpasar on the NusaDua isthmus.

    Public transport

Numerous bemos (minibuses) operate on xed routes around the city and the rest of the island, leaving when fulland stopping anywhere on their route on request. Mostforeigners nd the system confusing and nd hagglingover fares challenging. There are also buses connectingthe bigger cities around the island, operating mostlydaytime. Both buses and bemos can be stopped anywherealong their routes.

    Taxi

Blue and yellow city taxis can be hailed on the street, at numerous taxi ranks, or called from your hotel orrestaurant. They are cheap, by international standards andare much more convenient than bemos. However, beprepared to haggle over fares as taxi meters have failed tokeep pace with ination. Hiring a taxi with a driver can bea good option since the prices are low. Many drivers speaka little English. One of the biggest taxi companies on theisland is Bali Taksi & Golden Bird by PT Blue Birds.
