FIRST THOUGHTSDavid Hull, Pastor
Happy New Year! As the beauty of Advent and
Christmas fade away, the promise of a new year
is before us with hope and possibilities. Let me
encourage you to take part in opportunities for
learning, growth, and spiritual renewal as the
New Year begins.
Notice the Foundations for Life o" erings (listed
on this front page) that will be provided on
Sunday nights beginning this Sunday, January
9. Several di" erent courses will be taught for all ages in the church. I love
the variety that is o" ered for learning and growing on Sunday nights. I am
thankful for many gifted people from our church who will be leading these
classes that are very important for our growth as disciples of Jesus. Some
classes are taught in a large-group format; others are # lled with discussion
in a small group. Find the one that is best for you and join us on Sunday
nights. I look forward to teaching a class on “Worship” with those who
would like to join me on this learning journey. Billy Orton will be teaching
with me on occasion as we explore this practice that is at the very core of
our faith.
Our Wednesday night schedule begins again with activities for all ages.
The New Year is always a time when people make resolutions about
doing better in life. We may have some goals for 2011 that will lead us to
improve on the ways that we lived in 2010. One of the classic books about
life improvement has been The Seven Habits of Highly E" ective People by
Stephen Covey. Although it was written over 20 years ago, people still turn
to it for help in living more e" ective lives. Over the years I have noticed how
each one of Covey’s Seven Habits was lived out in the life of Jesus. He is our
perfect model for living, so it should not be surprising that the life of Jesus
exhibited the qualities of e" ective living. Join us on Wednesday nights for
Prayer Meeting after our Fellowship Supper as I teach “Jesus and the Seven
Habits.” The life and example of our Lord can lead us into more abundant
living in the New Year.
I look forward to learning and growing with you in 2011!

Opportunities in Music Ministries
Perhaps you’re starting the new year with the desire to participate in a music group.
This would be a great time to start since we will resume rehearsals this week. This
Wednesday, January 5, Orchestra will meet at 6 and Sanctuary Choir at 7. Next
Sunday, January 9, Youth Choir will rehearse again each Sunday at 5. Jeremy would
love to know of your interest in the Worship Team or Youth Band. Children’s Music and
Missions will resume Wednesday, January 12. We have three handbell groups, one
for children, youth and adults. Contact the music off ice to f ind out more information
about any group that interests you. Our next big music event will be A Prism of Praise,
Sunday March 20, 5 p.m. when all the music groups of our church will be featured in a
concert of continuous music of praise to God presented from all areas of the sanctuary.
Now is a great time to get involved!
An expression of gratitude for this year’s Living Christmas Tree As we move forward into a new year, Epiphany and the wonderful days following it, we look
afresh at how our lives can be a manifestation of the person and message of Jesus Christ. We
also can refl ect very easily upon the effectiveness of this past year’s LCT ministry. It has indeed
been one of our best! Our gratitude is deep for the many persons who have given of themselves in time,
talent, and energy. The LCT has been a church-wide project! The Ministry Team
members listed below served as chairs of their sub-committees and represent just a
portion of the many who have served so willingly in preparation for this presentation.
Our prayer is that the message of Jesus Christ and His love be communicated in all
aspects of the Living Christmas Tree 2010.

a Student Ministry Led Event
February 4
Our FBC Students want to “leave a mark” for Christ through the ministry of hospitality. On Friday, February 4, students and others will host homeless persons for a Love Feast in our Fellowship Hall.
The students would love to have the church’s support through:
Prayer for the message of Christ’s love to be delivered through all facets of the night.
Encouragement of the students planning the event.
Possible donations of clothing (perfect for after Christmas cleaning out) and hygiene bags. Look for more information to
come.
Students “Leaving a Mark”:
Recently our 7th & 10th Graders presented the Christmas Story to the FBC Special Adult Ministry. The ministry was f illed with all the Biblical characters—plus
Santa with gif ts for everyone!

CRADLE ROLL
Your church Cradle Roll ministry depends on you to let us know when someone is expecting
a baby or has plans to adopt a child into their family. This group of volunteers delights in
visiting, caring for, loving, and supporting our expectant and new families. When you hear
about this good news, would you please contact our Childhood Ministries off ice so that we
might add their name to our Cradle Roll list? We will assign one of our visitors to contact the
family so that they will know that their church home is caring for them. We are blessed to
have their gentle touches to the families of our church. Some of these touches happen through
phone calls or visits but others through nimble f ingers which crochet edging on a beautiful
f lannel blanket or through the time spent embroidering the child’s name and date of bir th on
the corner of the blanket. Thank you – Carolyn Miller, Bettye Pugh, Evelyn Rutland, Evelyn
Lucas, Joyce Freisen, Charlotte Davis, Emily Cook, Becky Tillery, Elizabeth Whitten, JoAnn
Splawn, Brenda Bounds, and Linda Nowlin.
WORSHIP CARE
Because of volunteers, we are able to provide care for Babies – 3 year old classes during
both of our morning Worship services. This is a very important ministry to young families
that can only be provided with those who are willing to serve. If you worship during the First
Fellowship time, have you considered offering care during Sanctuary Worship time? Or, if you
attend Sanctuary Worship, what about coming at 8:00 once a quarter to offer care during First
Fellowship? We require at least 8 volunteers per worship service. If you would be interested
in learning more about this ministry, please call our Childhood Ministries off ice at
256.428-9411.
