Base Year 2021-4 Calculations: College Station based members, TAMUCC, TAMUT, and TAMUSA

Purpose• When A&M members apply for grants there are direct costs

and indirect costsoDirect-cost of providing the grant, i.e. PI’s salaries, cost

needed to complete the testing..beakers, test strips, etc.oIndirect-utility cost in the lab space, depreciation on

equipment, administration team costs to pay bills, receive deposits…and sponsored research team needed to ensure we are incompliance with the grant requirements

• The federal government acknowledges indirect costs are important and allows each institution to calculate an indirect cost rate which will be used to recover for facilities and administration costs

Location & Calculation for IDC Recoveries• Rates by Location: oOn-Campus-facilities are owned by the member, oOff-Campus-facilities not owned by the member AND rent is directly allocated to

the project (rates are lower since the facility costs are removed)

• Indirect Cost Calculation: A Base Amount is determined by adding together all direct costs (-) minus any items which are exempt from IDC costs (Base Amount) x (Indirect Cost Rate) = Total Indirect Costs Recoveries

Cost Sharing• Cost Sharing is a requirement the department agrees to in order to

provide the sponsor with assurances the department will spend additional efforts on the program

• Cost Share does impact the F&A RateoAs we increase cost share; we reduce (water-down) the rate

• Cost Share usually does not come with any additional funding from the Sponsor

• Recommend talking with grant team, VPR’s Office, SPR teams if the cost share continues to rise, reviewing the methodology is important
