SHOWTIME

The calm before the storm – everyone's fresh and relaxed, everything seems to be in order and the chocolate wheel is about to begin spinning.

John Emslie reports:

On Sunday morning, I was sitting in my comfortable chair in the lounge, watching the Wallabies vs Pumas match. I started to become somewhat irritated at the banality of the commentary from Gordon Bray and Matt Bourke. Their words bore little resemblance to what was happening in front of them: we learnt (“you heard

it here first”) that the wife of an Argentine player (who was not even involved in the match) had just given birth to twins: we were informed that one of the Pumas had attended a sports clinic in Buenos Aires with the Manchester City striker (whatever that means). And so on, and so forth, etc, etc, etc. Meanwhile, I had momentarily taken my eyes off the play and the Pumas were penalised. What for? This pair weren’t going to tell me. And then, I got a feeling of déjà vu (yes, all over again). This was what I had been putting up with for the best part of the weekend. Instead of Bray and Bourke, we had Kym and Scruffy, spruiking

at the Chocolate Wheel. Did they keep the poor Recorder informed of what was happening out front? Well – I learnt that the pizza Kym had the night before was great; that Scruffy kept seeing mates from Alice Springs in the crowd; we had a learned discussion on the relative merits of the various food stalls around us; and other pieces of trivia such as an empty pram had just passed their eyes, and another balloon had escaped from some hapless child. Oh, and don’t forget the interview with the junior Darwin Cricket Club player. But please, please do forget the excruciating attempts at vocal harmony from the dubious duo. (Although Kingo did remark to me that he thought they were great: “The best spruiking I’ve ever heard”. Hmm.)

And so, in my capacity as Sergeant-at-Arms, I hereby declare that Kym and Scruffy have been nicknamed Bourke and Bray. Now that I have got that off my chest, I have to go on record and state categorically that we owe a great deal of thanks to this recalcitrant pair for their efforts over the weekend. And not only for taking on the task of continuous spruiking (albeit helped out when required by Grant the Turret Head).

When I arrived at 0800, Kym and Judy have already set up and Scruffy is off to Fingers’ place (and a big thank you Mark for your assistance) to seek further improvements to the machinery we know as The Wheel. He kept it up for three days, ensuring an almost uninterrupted operation (the interruptions were all PPM – Planned Preventative Maintenance.) Thank you fellows and I certainly appreciate your efforts.

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that we tend to take for granted, such as Ray organising and delivering the prizes, coming in at 0700-ish to top up drinks, and generally keeping a fatherly eye on things.

Then there’s Mick Murray organising the money and banking later. The ladies ensuring prize control goes smoothly. Don’t forget Ray, Kingo and Jim McDog set up the pre-Show barbecue, organising food and drink. And of course the sellers who are the up-front ambassadors for the Club as well as sellers - so thank you all for your efforts.

The results This year we managed 870 spins. Before you groan and point out that is 90 less than last year, consider the following: 2010 783 spins (13 bikes) 2011 760 spins (13 bikes) 2012 836 spins (7 bikes, 9 major prizes) 2013 712 spins (5 bikes, 19 major prizes) 2014 960 spins – an exceptional year (4 bikes, 17 major prizes) 2015 870 spins So, considering these results over five years, excepting last year, we were still up on the norm. Some more stats:

We handed out $26,175 in prize-money

We gave away 9 bikes and 8 other prizes (total value $6,071)

So total prize value was $32,246 Expenditure for the Chocolate Wheel was:

Site fee $ 6,495.18

Tickets cost $ 3,124.00

Prizes cost $ 7,605.00 (N.B. We returned three bikes and the remaining prizes will be raffled over the coming weeks.)

Float $ 7,000.00 So total expenditure $24,224.18. We banked $49,740.00, meaning our profit was $25,516.27. This is par for the course over the past five years (excepting the extraordinary results last year). Finally, it seems that we finished each night early. I don’t know the reason and won’t comment except to say that the record shows we were averaging a spin every three minutes which is a theoretical return of between $1,280 and $1,536 over the 16 spins available. Understanding Engineers Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?" The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."
