Our holidays feel “late” this year with Rosh HaShanah beginning Sunday evening, October 2nd. There is, however, much going on between now and then at Temple, and additionally, we have the opportunity to use this month before as personal preparation for our High Holy Days. Traditionally, this month of Elul before

the New Year is used to begin the work of repentance and healing: to reach out to those we may have hurt and ask for

forgiveness, to accept the apologies of those who may have harmed us, and to start to heal those relationships before this year ends and we start anew. We focus on where we have succeeded and where we have fallen short, and we ask forgiveness from God and ourselves, to repair those important relationships as well. Last year, we debuted our new High Holiday Machzor (prayerbook), replete with creative and meaningful modern readings. As we prepare to enter this High Holiday season together as a sacred congregation, we reflect on these words that will usher in 5777 in a few week’s time:

To everything there is a season, And a time for every purpose under heaven. This is the season of the soul – a time to rejoice, a time to reflect, a time to return…a time to gather round the table with loved ones and friends, a time for song and silence, for prayer and confession to open the heart, a time to retreat to our sanctuaries within, a time to renew the life and spirit of our community… This is the season of attentiveness- a time to notice what has unfolded and what has not, a time to regret, a time to forgive, a time to remember cherished dreams and high ideals erased by reality…This is the season of hope – like mist rising at sunset, like dew descending at dawn, our hopes beautify and nourish everything they touch. Our hopes make us partners in creation, pursuers of peace, people who aspire to a world of justice… This is the season of awe - When our eyes behold it, may we feel blessed. When we turn toward each other, let us feel strength. When we seek the Holy, may we find purpose, may we find courage, may we find love.

Wishing you and your loved ones a healthy, good, sweet New Year. Shanah Tovah!

It has been said that our world view depends, in great part, on what we see when we wake up in the morning.

I am grateful to usually wake up to birds singing, trees, and forested hills. I know people, however, that wake up in hospital rooms, who wake up to the sounds of gun shots, or I read of Israelis and others who wake up in the midst of terror attacks.

Regardless of where we live or where we wake up, we all have one thing in common -- we love life and we want to hold onto it.

I ask myself: why, then, is there so much violence in our world? And, it seems to be getting worse. What is missing? I know this may seem simplistic and naïve, but our Jewish faith and all faiths teach that we need lovingkindness (Chesed). What makes our practicing Chesed so difficult? Is it fear, economic insecurity, injustice, tribalism, prejudice, greed? What can I, as one person, do about it? Why do I write about this as President of The Temple? To put it simply, I can work on myself and I can work with others in our sacred community. This Temple, through our work (Avodah) can nurture us, give us strength, and restore hope in us for a world where our precious and fragile lives are uplifted, blessed, and even made holy. This congregation has a proud and strong tradition of helping us individually and collectively move towards lives filled with greater peace in ourselves and greater peace in our community. After all, our name, Ohabai ShOlOm, means “lovers of peace.” This Fall, this New Year, I hope we can all do Teshuvah, or return, to make ourselves stronger through greater love for ourselves and for each other. This Temple offers many beautiful ways for us to engage in Avodah or Teshuvah, whether it be through our inspiring music and liturgies at Shabbat or the High Holy Day services, our Chevrah Torah classes, our Social Action committee projects (please see the many great opportunities in this View), our Adult Education programs, or the simple goodness and generosity of connecting with each other in this congregation. Starting this Fall, there will be even more ways for us to nurture ourselves and our community and they include:

1. Spiritual wellness workshops and classes led by Felice Apolinsky;2. Hike and Havdalah at Percy Warner Park;3. Enjoy the “Spirit of Shabbat” at Penuel Ridge Contemplative Retreat Center;4. Deliver your own D’var Torah at a Saturday morning Shabbat service;5. Help build two Habitat houses or assist the new Kicks 4 Kids shoe collection;6. Attend a Temple Town Hall and perhaps become more inspired to help heal a social ill;7. Explore ways to fight modern-day intolerance, prejudice and bias at the Holocaust By Bullets exhibit;8. Join Temple Conversations (starting in November) to bring this welcoming congregation more connected to each

other; and/or9. Learn to create a “greener” world through involvement with our newly re-organized Green Committee.

You can learn more about these projects in this issue of the View, your High Holy Day handouts, or call me on my cell at (615) 419-8325. In a time when violence and divisiveness seem to be increasing in our world, let us be reminded of our ancient mission to be a “light unto the nations.” Let us, through the strength of this congregation, practice greater lovingkindness. Our lives are fragile and precious. May we, in this New Year, turn and work towards a more secure world for ourselves and for our general community. I hope to see you soon at The Temple or at one of the new offerings. May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life for a great New Year.

L’Shana Tova.

Congregational News

Rabbi Mackler was selected as one of America’s most inspiring rabbis during the summer.

Below is an excerpt from their article.

“Rabbi Mackler came to the temple right after her ordination. She brought with her not only her extensive academic knowledge of Judaism, but also the heart of Judaism. Her kindness knows no bounds & always, always reminds us of what it means to be a Jew in these often dangerous times. On a daily basis she shows the importance of striving for social justice when justice seems so far out of reach for Jews, our Muslim brothers & sisters, the Latino community & the LGBTQ community. She is the epitome of just what it means to be a Jew in one’s heart & in one’s actions. The women have their own Torah study & a program called W.E.L.L., Women Engaged in Living & Learning, a program she began that keeps us involved long after our children have grown. Rabbi Mackler keeps the congregants engaged in the life of The Temple & in the life of the community, & for those reasons she is one of the most inspiring rabbis in America.”

dOeS yOur Child lOve tO Sing? If so, the Temple Mazel Tones (formerly known as the Junior Choir) warmly invite any Religious School student in grades 1-4 to join us for the 2016-2017 school year. Directed by Temple member and Nashville songwriter/producer Dennis Scott, our young singers learn a variety of music from our Jewish tradition, ranging from Israeli folk songs to the newest music of the Reform movement. The only prerequisite to join is a love of singing and making music with others!

Our Older SingerS (thOSe in gradeS 5-8) are welcome to become a part of the newest youth music program at The Temple, our Mazel Teens. Directed by Cantor Fishbein, our Mazel Teens focus on the newest music of the Reform movement. As we study these contemporary Jewish songs, we learn more about how they were composed and the intentions and meaning behind them. While the group is intended for graduates of our Mazel Tones program, all older student singers are encouraged to contact Cantor Fishbein if interested.

Yom Kippur Food DriveOctober 11th

Jews share a sacred duty to accept responsibility for the vulnerable people in our midst.Hunger exists in America and it exists right here in our own backyard.

One in four children in the state of Tennessee are food insecure, and in Middle Tennessee alone, Thirty-one percent of the people Second Harvest serves are children.

The Temple Social Action Committee is proud to sponsor our Yom Kippur Food Drive every year! There are 2 ways to donate to our congregation’s drive:

• Bring non-perishable food items in a bag or box on Yom Kippur. • Write a check to Second Harvest Food Bank and mail or bring it to Temple.

Habitat For Humanity The Temple has partnered with the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro and First Presbyterian Church of Franklin for a Habitat for Humanity build. There will be a special Shabbat service on September 16th to kick off the project. Members of all three congregations will participate in the service, and Congressman Jim Cooper will be joining us and making remarks about the program.

The build will take place on September 17th and 18th. On Saturday, the goal is to have younger volunteers participating, and older (but not necessarily more mature) volunteers will be working on Sunday. The Temple is providing breakfast both days, and volunteers will be needed for that job. Finally, on Sunday, September 25th, there will be another special service at First Presbyterian Church. The address is 101 Legends Club Lane, Franklin, TN. 37069, services start at 11:00 am, and lunch will follow. We need to have, a general idea of how many Temple people will be there for the service and lunch.

If anyone wants to volunteer for any of the work and/or RSVP for the September 25th event,

please contact Alan Mazer at [email protected].

Important Information

High Holy DaysAttention! Attention! Attention! Attention!

Some people find the temperature in the sanctuary can fluctuate during services. We recommend you bring a wrap or other

garment to insure your comfort throughout services.

Parking and Security for the High Holy Days

Each year, congregants for High Holy Day services are greeted at The Temple by uniformed officers and professional parking attendants. Security this year will be provided through a combined effort of public and private personnel who are familiar with our Temple buildings and grounds. The usual procedures will be in place for security, traffic control and member safety. Please note the following very important items:

1. Leave for services earLier than usual in order to arrive in advance of service time. There are two entrances to The Temple. Drop-off is available only at the glassed-in-foyer entrance for those who need it.

2. Overflow parking will be available on the Belle Meade Plantation property .

3. If you park at the Plantation, we ask that you enter by way of The Temple parking lot but exit only from the Belle Meade Plantation exit on Leake Avenue following services.

4. The Temple driveway will be one way during our largest services. Please follow the posted signs that will direct you around the building. The traffic controllers will direct you as to where and how to park and exit. Please do not try to back into parking spaces, this causes traffic to back up. Your patience will be greatly appreciated!

5. Additional disabled & elderly parking will be available close to the building. Look for signs.

6. Please remember that our neighbors will likely be less critical of the traffic congestion if we park “on” the street rather than “in” their yards and/or driveways. Over the past two years the Belle Meade Police Department has towed cars blocking city traffic during services. BE WARNED, we cannot interrupt services to announce imminent towing.

A Reminder About Seating

Sanctuary, chapel, and auditorium seating will be in place to accommodate over 1,200 members and guests to each of the services for the High Holy Days. As in the past, there are no tickets required for entry into the services, nor is there reserved seating.

We ask your cooperation through the direction of the ushers and staff in helping to maintain the dignity and decorum of our services. Please help them by adhering to a few simple but very important ruLes:

1. You mAY not sAve seAts in the sAnctuArY except for the driver while he/she is parking. If you wish to sit together, you may gather in the foyer and enter together or you may save a few seats in the chapel or auditorium.

2. PleAse do not leAve emPtY sPAces between You And the Person next to You. It is critical that we fill All available seating so that everyone who wants to attend can be accommodated.

3. a special seating section will be available for the convenience of persons with physical disabilities.

4. no one mAY enter the sAnctuArY, chAPel or Auditorium when the congregAtion is stAnding. The staff knows when to seat latecomers. Entry will be through the auditorium and chapel doors only, so as not to disturb services in progress.

5. PleAse be considerAte of others while wAiting in the foYer Prior to the stArt of the next service. If you arrive early, we ask that you wait quietly. The noise from those waiting can easily be heard in the sanctuary. The speakers in the foyer area will enable you to listen to services in progress.

6. So that everyone is assured of having a PrAYerbook, kindly return yours to the ushers and staff in the lobby at the end of the service. If you own a copy of the Gates of Repentance prayerbook, we encourage you to bring it.

Please ... Drive Slowly l Do Not Park on the Grass l Please Carpool ... Follow Directions

The Temple’s newly-formed environmental committee, Being Green, is on a mission to help us all reduce our personal and collective carbon footprints. Perhaps our most important goal is to help educate our fellow congregants, especially our children, as well as the community at large, about how to live green and why it has become so critical to do so without delay.

Here are some of the initiatives we're working on with finalization on several projects subject to Temple Board approval.• Making The Temple a more earth-friendly place: for example, replacing Styrofoam cups/plastic tableware, etc. with biodegradable

items and reducing our use of electricity using various methods, including the possibility of solar panels.• Helping to eliminate hunger in Nashville: we've met with The Nashville Food Project, whose mission it is to bring people

together to grow, cook and share nourishing food, with the goals of cultivating community and alleviating hunger in our city (one in five people in Nashville lacks access to enough food to sustain a healthy lifestyle and, at the same time, more than 40% of all the food in our city gets wasted). We are working with this organization in connection with their search for a plot of land for an additional garden to augment their current gardens. We hope also to help them secure funds for a walk-in cooler to expand their food-storage capacity.

• Composting at The Temple: the idea here is to handle both The Temple's food waste and that of interested congregants. Via an organization known as Compost Nashville, we hope to donate the compost to The Nashville Food Project.

• Participating in the larger "green" community: we have begun working with a state-wide, interfaith, environmental organization, TIPL (Tennessee Interfaith Power and Light), whose goals are aligned with ours.

Being Green welcomes your enthusiasm, suggestions and participation! We look forward to organizing volunteer days to work at The Nashville Food Project. These will be particularly well-suited to the older children in our religious school. We plan to set up an information session and encourage these children (and their parents) to consider The Nashville Food Project as a possibility for their Mitzvah projects. Notwithstanding Kermit the Frog's statement to the contrary, we believe that it's easy Being Green—especially when we look upon it as an act of tikkun olam. THE SPIRIT OF SHABBAT - A contemplative overnight retreat in the Jewish tradition

4 pm Friday, September 23rd through 4 pm Saturday, September 24th, Penuel Ridge Retreat Center, Ashland City

followed by a joint Temple & West End Synagogue Selichot Service at WES that same evening This contemplative retreat is spear-headed by several of us from

The Temple community, headed by President Martin Sir.Over the course of our retreat, we will have time together and individually to contemplate the

meaning of the V’ahav’ta: What does it mean to love God with all your heart, all your soul and all your might?

In the course of our busy daily lives, it can be challenging to hear the “still small voice” that spoke to Elijah and so many others of our prophets and mystics, calling us to experience a deeper level of daat (religious encounter) , an experience of ratzon

(revelation of God’s will) or simply to tap into new reservoirs of inspiration (ruach ha-kodesh.) What better time than on the eve of Selichot and the High Holidays, calling us to initiate a serious and uplifting period of introspection?

Drawing upon both eastern and western spiritual practices consistent with the Jewish tradition, we will worship in nature, walk in silence, engage in contemplative dialogue, share meals, enjoy a ritual bonfire with song and stories and have time for both

individual and communal contemplative experiences.

The deadline to register is September 13th with a cost of $140 that includes three catered meals. Checks should be made payable to The Temple.

Please contact Lisa Forberg at 603-490-7221 or at [email protected] for more information and to learn about the accommodations.

Religious School

As the new school year begins, we are excited to share with you the new programs and initiatives that will enhance our Religious School here at The Temple.

muSiC

Along with our existing music program for K-3 graders, we have expanded to include 4-6 grades. These older students will participate in a camp-style ‘song session’ every 3 weeks. During this song session, students will experience the ‘ruach’ or spirit of Jewish music that many of our students know from being at summer camp. In December, we are thrilled to have a musician-in-residence for the weekend who will do various programs with our religious school aged children. The culmination of this weekend will be an all-school family concert with lots of participation of our students. More details will follow soon!

JuniOr high and high SChOOl

Our 7th-10th graders now have core classes on Sundays along with their electives. Each grade has a special focus for the year. 7th Grade: Holocaust, antisemitism and social justice; 8th Grade: Comparative Judaism and world religions; 9th Grade: Jewish holidays, community organizing and sacred relationships; 10th Grade: Jewish identity and choices. Electives this year will be longer to allow a more in depth exploration of various topics and big ideas. Some of the electives this year include: journalism theory and practice, debating current events, mind, body and spirit, Modern Hebrew, Step Up for Israel, and Judaism & the arts. Many of our elective teachers are talented congregants who have offered their time and expertise to help educate the next generation of responsible Jewish adults! Also for our 7th-10th graders we have a few new special programs occurring throughout the year including a trip to Whitwell, Tennessee the site of the Paper Clips project made famous by the award winning documentary of the same name. While at Whitwell, our students will by touring the exhibit, listening to the testimony of a survivor and leading a memorial service for Elie Wiesel. In April, our students will be participating in the Freedom Song program. Through many generous grants in our community, we are bringing in this troupe from Congregation Beit T’shuvah in California for a very special performance. Freedom Song is a transformative musical that will shatter the myth of Jews being immune to addiction. By interweaving a Passover Seder with personal stories, Freedom Song poses one stark question- ‘what are you a slave to?’

new teaCherS and madriChim

Because of our expanded program and classes, we have hired a number of new teachers to join our veteran teachers in the Religious School. Some of them are new to Nashville and to our congregation as well. Please be sure to welcome them when you see them here! Even more exciting is the doubling of the number of madrichim (teenaged teaching assistants) in our Religious School! We have 4 high schoolers working on Sunday and 6 on Wednesdays for Hebrew School. Without a doubt, these teens will bring their rock star status to our classes and students.

imPrOvementS

This year, we have expanded the use of technology in our school. With a faster and more reliable internet and wi-fi system in the building, we can use computers and videos in new ways in the classrooms. Hebrew homework for grades 4-6 will require students to use computers, tablets or phones to continue their learning between classes. We are also in the process of designing a new art room for our classes to use throughout the year.

iSrael COnneCtiOnS

To deepen our connections to the land and people of Israel and in particular, the residents of our sister region, Hadera, we have designed 3 projects for our Religious School. Our 5th graders, who study Israel for the entire year, will be taking a special Israeli stuffed animal to various places around Nashville and taking photos of it to share on a special website. 5th graders from a school in Hadera will be doing the same thing with a stuffed animal from the US going to various places around Israel. These photos are intended to spark conversations about the differences and similarities between our two countries. Our high schoolers will be participating in a monthly online discussion about various topics such as Jewish identity, current events and values throughout the year. Lastly, every student in our school will create a quilt square with their own interpretation of a Star of David along with reflections on Jewish identity. These squares first will be put together with other squares from other students in Nashville and then will travel to Israel to be put together with squares created by students in our sister region. Next summer, the entire quilt will come back here to be shared and admired by all.

The Temple Preschool is excited about the start of a new year. With a focus on our environment and family involvement, we have put a few new things in place for this year. We look forward to keeping you updated on our exciting adventures throughout the year.

new fOr thiS SChOOl year:

Real TablewareThe preschool is transitioning to using real dishes for snacks and lunches. By using glass and melamine plates, bowls, and cups ,and metal flatware, we hope to eliminate the majority of the waste from paper/plastic products. This should prove great for the environment as well as our budget (long term).

The Temple Preschool Celebrates the Opening of the

2016-2017 School Year.

Preschoolby Corye Nelson

Artelier (Studio) Use The Preschool will focus on utilizing our two amazing studios. In our Woodworking Studio 1 or 2 children can work with a teacher on hand-eye coordination, matching sizes, fine motor skills, learning to safely use tools and much more. In our Visual Arts/Light & Shadow Studio, one to four children can work with a teacher on a number of visual arts including painting, sculpture, clay, print making, sketching and more. This space is also used for light and shadow exploration. We have black lights, spot lights, flashlights, shadow boxes and overhead projectors that make our exploration possibilities endless. Additionally, for most of the school year, we will have an Artelerista (Reggio inspired title for a specialist who works with children in the studios) who will work with children in small groups in both of our studios.

Grandparents CircleWe have launched a new program called Grandparents’ Circle. We have collected contact information for our families’ grandparents and will include them in invitations to our family events. We will also have events that specifically honor Grandparents and special friends. Building community is an important part of the preschool’s focus. Aiding our extended families to feel connected to our program, helps in building community.
