An example, a study about saproxylic insects
Saproxylic insects are bio-indicating species of the quality of forests
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the biological value of certain forests of the PNM
To sensitize the rangers on the saproxylic insects and the dynamics of the forest ecosystem

Approximately 200 species found, of which 49 remarkable saproxylic species :
species in limit of their range of distribution (3) rare species in France (35) new species in France (1) endemic species (6) species to be described or confirmed (4)
Summary of results

Towards the catch in consideration…
The causes of vulnerability are:• the disappearance of habitats• the fragmentation (populations dispersing very little)
=> To develop recommendations for the catch in consideration in daily management, dialog with the forest
actors
EDIT General Meeting
Carvoeiro, 23-25 January 2008
To preserve the settlements of great maturity and naturality as well as the settlement clearings and rich in deadwood.
To take into account saproxylic insects in the daily management of the forests :
To consider the ecological, economic and commercial value of the trees.
To prefer a diversity of tree species in the forest settlements, maintenance of small islands of senescence
To leave a volume of deadwood, at least 5% of the tree, and min 20 m3/ha.
To support the continuity in the time and the space of very old trees and deadwood.
Some conservative measures…
EDIT General Meeting
Carvoeiro, 23-25 January 2008
Creating a « serie of ecological interest » of 151 ha, without forest cut until 2025.
To use this space for pedagogy and to make people conscious of forest ecosystem.
