St. Anne’s Student Mods Trac-tor To Run Farm By-Products BY RODNEY HIEMSTRA JANUARY 24, 2017 “A Grade 12 student at St. Anne’s has converted a Ford 3000 tractor to run on biofuels. While he admits the idea was not his own, Evan feels the use of canola and soybean oils could certainly have a future in farming. “It pairs especially well with people who are pressing their own oilseeds on-farm for the protein meal, because then the oil left over is essentially a worthless by-product for them. The fuel is

almost at zero-cost, so it’s definitely something that’s a good alternative for a lot of different opera-tions.” [Evan] notes the conversion of the tractor was simple. He put a secondary tank on the front and inserted a three-way valve just before the fuel injector pump. [Evan] notes even with the loss in power and some torque as well, the fact that the fuel is free makes the biofuels a clear choice for those who have access to it. His access comes from En-ergrow Inc. in Listowel, which sells oilseed presses to farmers and then buys back the oil to be redistributed to those who want to use it for fuel.” Congratulations Evan for being a national 4-H Science Fair final-ist in Truro, Nova Scotia! We wish you all the best as you compete with over 500 young scientists at the National Championship at the University of Regina.

The Girls Hockey Program concluded one of the most successful seasons to date, bringing home the Waterloo-Oxford Junior Girls Hockey Tournament Championship on Tuesday, March 28, in New Hamburg. The girls defeated Wellington Heights from Mount For-est 7-1. Pulling the goalie in the last minute of play tied the score 1-1 with Centre Wellington (Fergus) in their second game.

They went on to defeat Preston (Cambridge) 4-1 to advance to the Championship Final. With only 15 minutes rest prior to the final game, the Eagles found themselves down 2-0 to J.F. Ross (Guelph), only to come from behind to win 5-3; an outstanding effort put forth by these positive, determined young women. A great day of hockey!

By: Mr. Geiger St. Anne’s Ladies Hockey Team remains the Huron-Perth Silver Medalist for the third year in a row! Their defeat came as a result of a shootout to two-time defending OFSAA champion St. Michael with a score of 3-2. CONGRATULATIONS LADIES! Great coaching by Mr. Geiger and Mr. Thompson!

A great day at Huron-Perth Sr. Badminton resulted in Zane and

Joey winning silver in Men's Doubles. Chase and Delayna were

also winners in bringing home a silver in Mixed Doubles. Jessica

and Meghan worked hard and placed 5th.

Zane and Joey competed at WOSSAA Senior Badminton on April

20th, placing third. Only one win away from going to OFSAA !!

Huge congratulations to Joshua on receiving an invite to perform in BOTH the National Concert Band AND the National Percussion Ensemble at Music Fest Nationals in Niagara Falls this year. We have some great Nationally recog-nized bands at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School. Josh will be our first St. Anne's student to perform at Music Fest Nationals in an Honour band! While in Niagara Falls the entire Nationals week, Josh will be rehearsing for eight hours each day; working with some of the best perfor-mance directors in the country. He will perform with both bands, as well as St. Anne’s own Concert Band The Honour Bands are made up of the best-of-the-best from across Canada based on a rigor-ous audition process. Think of it as a "National All-Star Team" for Music. Josh has another year left at St. Anne's but is already entertaining universities that are inter-ested in him! Come out to St. Anne’s May Melodies on May 5th, and see Josh and other amazing musicians perform!

On March 22nd-25th, St. Anne’s Drama

Club, travelled to Listowel DSS, with

their teacher, Ms. Brennan-Yeo, to

compete in the annual Sears District

Drama Arts Festival. Twelve different

shows were presented throughout the

course of the celebration. Adjudicator,

Gord Davis, presented awards to nu-

merous participants. Courtney received

both the ‘People’s Choice’ award and a

‘Directing’ merit award. The entire ensemble

won an ‘Award of Excellence’ for their work

as a cast and crew. Their play, “It’s Not you,

It’s Me” (written by Don Zolidis and present-

ed with permission of Play scripts Inc.) won

Outstanding Performance at the festival;

earning them an invitation to the Regional

Showcase in Cambridge April 2nd-8th.

The St. Anne's Drama Club represented the Eagles with

grace and amazing fortitude at the Regional Sears

Dramatic Arts Festival, held at St. Benedict's School in

Cambridge, Ontario.

They did their best performance to date and were over-

whelmed with audience response to their piece both im-

mediately after and in the following days. Fifteen amaz-

ing shows competed for two spots in the provincial show-

case. While St. Anne’s did not win a spot, the Eagles had a

wonderful learning experience whilst immersed in four

days of dramatic theatre and spectacular workshops!

Our own Courtney came home with additional hardware;

a Director’s Award of Merit! We all arrived in the nest

with joy in our hearts and smiles on our faces!

Month and St. Anne’s decided to

promote healthy hearts by getting

up and moving it!

Principal, Ms. Tigani, presented a

cheque to Heart & Stroke Coordi-

nator, Joyce Ribey, for $800 on

behalf of St. Anne’s Eagles. Thank

you St. Anne’s for helping to sup-

port this worthwhile cause!
