These awards are motivation for kids to make their best effort to come to school, instead

of staying home for things like a headache. Also, each team in seventh and eighth grade gets

The Honor of Being a WEB Leader

By: Sophie Armor, Maggie Harris, and Anna Richards (current WEB leaders)

Being a WEB leader is an honor that approximately 125 out of this year’s 574 seventh grade students will

achieve for their eighth grade year. It means a lot to have seventh graders looking up to you for help and guidance. It

takes hard work and personality to be a good WEB leader. Some of the lessons that WEB leaders teach are hard to do

and they take a lot of practice to get right. Being in WEB means to lead people to good things. A WEB leader doesn’t

just help seventh graders fit in; they prevent bullying and are trying to make a difference at Nagel.

“I feel it takes commitment and you have to have a lot of heart to do it,” says Chris Lewis of Team 8-2. WEB

takes up your advisory time but in the end it’s worth it. “Helping others is something all WEB leaders like to do, and in

the end it’s pretty fun,” said Carter Ward of Team 8-1. WEB is fun but serious. During advisory, WEB leaders learn and

practice the lessons that they lead their Webbies through. They have discussions and go over who will lead each particu-

lar lesson. Then they meet with their seventh grade advisory on Thursdays to teach these important lessons on fitting in,

making new friends, how to deal with bullies, goal setting and much more.

WEB makes Nagel a place where everyone belongs and can get support and advice. “There is no certain kind of

person because we take a cross-section of people,” said Mrs. Wettengel and Mrs. Hamm who are two of our WEB coor-

dinators. This means that a student doesn’t have to be the highest achieving student or the best athlete to become a WEB

leader. Leaders are people who are caring, charismatic, good listeners, and who want to make the world a better place.

They are people who do their best in school, are truthful, have a positive outlook on life, and who demonstrate good

morals.

It means a lot to be a WEB leader. “WEB takes a lot of commitment and time from everybody,” said Lauren

Viel a current eighth grade WEB leader on Team 8-3. In the end, you have fun and get to meet a lot of new people. If

you are a student who enjoys working with others, making a difference, and helping out-- then you are the right person

to apply to be a WEB leader. According to Maggie Harris of Team 8-5 and Anna Richards of Team 8-3, “It makes our

day when our Webbies come up and talk to us when they need our advice or just want to say hi. It feels great to make

differences and make Nagel a better place.”

How To Apply to become a 2012-2013 Nagel WEB Leader

Page 3 I S S U E 1 0

Are you leadership material? Students who are interested in or looking into being a WEB Leader will need to fill

out a questionnaire packet and complete an Eye Jot. These don’t take that much work but you have to be yourself

and put some time and effort into them.

Eye Jot is basically a video created about you. What is the video about? Students who are applying to become a

WEB leader will talk about their hobbies, things they like to do, and why they would like to be a WEB Leader. On the

application and questions it’s important to be yourself and be truly honest. The teachers and counselors who are

WEB coordinators want to know the true you. These Applications were handed out on March 15, 2012 at the re-

cruitment meeting. The packet explains everything students need to know about the Eye Jot. The Eye Jot and appli-

cation are due on or before March 29, 2012by 2:30 p.m. in the box in the front lobby.

As a seventh grader you may not see all the different kinds of people and personalities that are in WEB, but really

there are all kinds. WEB accepts every kind of person and a cross-section of people. You don’t have to be the

smartest member of your team; you just have to care about your school work and try your best. WEB Leaders are

supposed to be kind, truly honest, helpful and people that have your back!

WEB takes a lot of commitment and takes a week of your summer to practice and get ready to make the seventh

graders feel welcome and comfortable at Nagel. Though there is some work and preparation involved, the program

is fun and is a fantastic opportunity to get involved at Nagel.

Being involved in clubs, sports, and other extra curricular activities is fun and helps

students meet new people and make new friends. Participating in sports, NExt clubs and music

programs also help students develop a sense of pride and school spirit. To be involved in sports

and other activities students must be eligible. Student athletes have to be eligible to participate.

In order to be eligible to play, a 1.7 GPA (Cumulative GPA is not used in determining eligibility) is needed. If

students don’t meet this criteria, it is a school rule and they can not be allowed to participate.

At Nagel students must be passing at least five classes. All incoming seventh graders are eligible for any

sports during the fall only because grades are checked once every quarter. Surprisingly, students can be too old

to play; middle school students may not turn fifteen prior to August first to participate in seventh and eighth

grade athletics. Also, students must participate in PE, and must be in school at least half of the day to be able to

go to practice or play in an event. In seventh and eighth grade it’s important to get good grades because one of

the last rules is that fourth quarter grades count as eligibility for

eighth grade and high school participation.

Becoming a U.S. Citizen

The naturalization process is the process which applicants have to go through to become a United

States citizen. People from all over the world can be processed to become United States citizens. The eighth

grade social studies department invited applicants to be naturalized here at Nagel so government can come

alive for eighth grade.

Some of the rights that will be gained by new citizens are the right to vote and newly naturalized citi-

zens will also be granted protection for their children to stay in the United States. This helps to keep families

together. 75 candidates are expected to become United States citizens during the ceremony. The F.B.I. and

Homeland Security will be present for security purposes. This ceremony will happen Friday, March 30, 2012.

It will begin at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 10:00 a.m. It will be held in the Nagel gym but the gym will be trans-

formed into a federal court! There will be candidates from all over southern Ohio, who came from Europe,

South America, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, India, Mexico, and Africa who are becoming U.S. citi-

zens.

The entire eighth grade will attend this ceremony. Mr. Evans, father of Team 8-5 student Angela Ev-

ans, is a lawyer. He suggested that Nagel apply for this honor and Mrs. Grove applied. The Judge Magistrate,

which is the person who has the authority to grant people their citizenship, will be Stephanie Bowman. There

will be around 200 people plus our eighth grade student body to witness this patriotic event.

Roses and People

By: Katelyn Nevin

A rose is a person,

Overrated, too highly honored, and cliquish.

Layers upon layers of feelings, thoughts, and

memories are deep within the depths of its petals

All of them humiliation of others, arrogance, and

hiding their insecurities.

As they snap at everyone in sight, their thorns

peek out of their very living beings,

Their voices tense as they manipulate and scream.

Yup, that’s human nature for you.

Dawn After Dark

Rainbows and sunshine.

In this world of war

death and blood,

the sun shines

after a storm

and makes a rainbow
