THE CRUSADER SYLVAN HILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH A community of Christians committed to strengthening families of all shapes and sizes. June 1, 2015 9921 Hwy 107, Sherwood, AR 72120 Phone: 501.835.3410 E-mail: [email protected] Website: sylvanhillsumc.com There is no such thing as a dumb question. This is the chorus of every teacher in every classroom in America. They say this help makes the students feel comfortable asking anything at anytime. So that if someone doesnt know where Germany is, they will ask before the unit on World War II is over. However, no matter how many times we hear this statement, there is a small voice in the back of our heads telling us that our questions are silly, that they highlight our ignorance. Unfortunately, this attitude has infiltrated the church. Every week in worship, in Sunday School, in bible studies we tackle complicated theological concepts along with studying a book that is hundreds of pages long. Questions are bound to come up, and yet people feel like they should already know it or that questions show a weak faith. I would argue the opposite. There are always new things to learn and discover in a life of faith, and a faith devoid of questions is a faith that is not growing and expanding. When the brightest minds spend time pondering God they come up with more questions than answers. You see, questions are not just encouraged in church, they are essential. This is why for the next few weeks we are going to be tackling some of the Hard Questions that we encounter in our lives of faith. Each Sunday morning we will tackle a hard questions during the worship service and on the following Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. We will explore the questions in a bible study. We will be asking questions like, Do good atheists go to heaven?,and Why does God allow suffering? Each question that we will be answering was submitted by a member of community here at SHUMC. All of the questions submitted revealed this church to be a community that is ardently striving to reconcile their faith and the world they live in. I am looking forward to exploring these questions with you all. As we do so, I want to assure you that there truly is no such thing as a stupid question. Every question asked brings us closer to God. Even the hard questions, the faith-quaking questions, the questions we dont want to say aloud, they are all important parts of our faith, because they reveal that we are cultivating a deep and complex faith where there is room for mystery and ambiguity. There is no such thing as a dumb question. This is the chorus of every teacher in every classroom in America. They

say this help makes the students feel comfortable asking anything at anytime. So that if someone doesn’t know where

Germany is, they will ask before the unit on World War II is over. However, no matter how many times we hear this

statement, there is a small voice in the back of our heads telling us that our questions are silly, that they highlight our

ignorance.

Unfortunately, this attitude has infiltrated the church. Every week in worship, in Sunday School, in bible studies we

tackle complicated theological concepts along with studying a book that is hundreds of pages long. Questions are

bound to come up, and yet people feel like they should already know it or that questions show a weak faith. I would

argue the opposite. There are always new things to learn and discover in a life of faith, and a faith devoid of questions

is a faith that is not growing and expanding. When the brightest minds spend time pondering God they come up with

more questions than answers. You see, questions are not just encouraged in church, they are essential.

This is why for the next few weeks we are going to be tackling some of the Hard Questions that we encounter in our

lives of faith. Each Sunday morning we will tackle a hard questions during the worship service and on the following

Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. We will explore the questions in a bible study. We will be asking questions like, “Do

good atheists go to heaven?,” and “Why does God allow suffering?” Each question that we will be answering was

submitted by a member of community here at SHUMC. All of the questions submitted revealed this church to be a

community that is ardently striving to reconcile their faith and the world they live in.

I am looking forward to exploring these questions with you all. As we do so, I want to assure you that there truly is no

such thing as a stupid question. Every question asked brings us closer to God. Even the hard questions, the

faith-quaking questions, the questions we don’t want to say aloud, they are all important parts of our faith, because

they reveal that we are cultivating a deep and complex faith where there is room for mystery and ambiguity.
