SUNDAY AFTER THE FEAST OF THE DIVINE ASCENSION AND COMMEMORATION OF THE HOLY FATHERS OF THE FIRST ECUMENICAL COUNCIL
FOR NON-ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS
MAY 28, 2017
We welcome all people across all religions to pray with us. However, it is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions in Christianity, and therefore, we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and are very pleased that you are with us this morning.
THE SYNAXARIONOn May 28 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate the Hieromartyr Eutychios, bishop of Melitene; Martyr Heliconis of Thessalonica; Venerable Andrew of Constantinople, fool-for-Christ; Germanos, bishop of Paris; and Ignatius the wonderworker, bishop of Rostov. On this day, the seventh Sunday of Pascha, we celebrate the first Ecumenical Council of the 318 Godbearing Fathers, which took place in Nicaea in Bithynia. Arius, the notorious heretic, began to blaspheme against God and His Son the Word, saying that the latter was not God consubstantial with the Father, but that He was created as a stranger to the Substance of the Father and His glory. Alexander, the Archbishop of Alexandria, tried to constrain Arius from disturbing the faithful with this teaching; even though Alexander excommunicated him, Arius did not cease his blasphemy, which spread throughout the Church in all nations. Thus, Emperor Constantine the Great called the First Ecumenical Council, which gathered bishops and teachers in the Church from all lands. They all proclaimed, as by one mouth, the equality of the Son of God with the Father in Substance, thus laying down the noble Confession of Faith, The Creed, which we Orthodox Christians recite to this day. The Church regards these divine Fathers as preachers of the Faith next to the holy Apostles. By the intercessions of the 318 God-bearing Fathers, O Christ God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Pentecost 2017 Dear Clergy and Faithful of the Midwest Diocese,
Glory to Jesus Christ! God sees us, knows us, cares for us, and most of all, loves us. No matter where we go, He is
there waiting for us. No matter who we are with, we are never without Him being with us. On Pentecost, we once again begin our daily and liturgical prayers by saying: “O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere present and fillest all things…” “Wither shall I go from Thy Spirit? Or wither shall I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Thy hand shall lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, ‘Let only darkness cover me, and the light about me be night, ‘even the darkness is not dark to Thee, the night is bright as the day; for darkness is as light with Thee.’” (Psalm 139:7-12) We need more from the Holy Spirit than Him beside us holding our hands and guiding us. We need Him inside us, molding our hearts so that we become, through the grace He gives us in the sacraments and by the disciplines in the Church, everything God is by nature. By rising from the dead in His Resurrected Body, Christ has raised all the dead for all time: “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. As one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men.” (1 Corinthians 15:22; Romans 5:18) “Christ is Risen!” He has done His work. The victory of Christ given to every man objectively must be accepted by each man subjectively. I must want what I have! I make His victory over death my own by living the virtues of Christ personally. The work of the Holy Spirit is to shape us in virtue so that we attain “… mature manhood … the stature of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13) The Holy Spirit’s work is ongoing. It is never done! The everyday of our lives must express, even in the small details and unnoticed routines, the “never-ending Day of His Kingdom.” St. John Chrysostom said it beautifully, “Whenever the Holy Spirit is present, He makes men of gold out of men of clay.”
May the Spirit of Truth continue to guide us to the fullness of Truth, Christ our True God!
Yours in Christ,
+Bishop ANTHONY Bishop of Toledo Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America PS Pentecost is Mission Sunday throughout our diocese. As we renew our lives in the Spirit, please remember all parishes are asked to take a special offering on this day to support our nine mission parishes. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior save us.
Save us, O Son of God, Who didst rise from us in glory to the heavens; who sing to Thee. Alleluia.
Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the earth. My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. I will incline mine ear to a parable; I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
For the Lord Most High is terrible; He is a great King over all the earth. He hath subdued the peoples under us, and the nations under our feet. (Refrain)
God is known in her palaces when He cometh to our aid. (Refrain)
For lo, the kings of the earth were assembled; they came together. (Refrain)
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. (Refrain)
O clap your hands, all ye peoples; shout unto God with the voice of exultation.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain.

Thou hast ascended in glory, O Christ our God, and gladdened Thy Disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit, having become confident of the blessing. Verily, Thou art the Son of God, and Deliverer of the world.
Thou, O Christ, art our God of exceeding praise Who didst establish our holy Fathers as luminous stars upon earth, and through them didst guide us unto the true Faith, O most merciful One, glory to Thee.
When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb. And the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.

In those days, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the

In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down and prayed with them all.

At that time, Jesus lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son that the Son may glorify Thee, since Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom Thou hast given Him. And this is eternal life, that they know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom Thou hast sent. I glorified Thee on earth, having accomplished the work which Thou gavest Me to do; and now, Father, glorify Thou Me in Thy own presence with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was made. I have manifested Thy Name to the men whom Thou gavest Me out of the world; Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me, and they have kept Thy word. Now they know that everything that Thou hast given Me is from Thee; for I have given them the words which Thou gavest Me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from Thee; and they have believed that Thou didst send Me. the world but for those whom Thou hast given Me, for they are Thine; all Mine are Thine, and Thine are Mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to Thee. Holy Father, keep them in Thy Name, which Thou hast given Me, that they may be one, even as We are one. While I was with them, I kept them in Thy Name, which Thou have given Me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to Thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.”
