Liverpool Hospital

Welcome

Proudly sponsored by

Liverpool Hospital has been operating continuously

since the end of the eighteenth century. It was

originally run as a hospital for soldiers and convicts,

starting as a tent hospital in the 1790’s. The

first brick hospital was established in 1813 on a

portion of land beside the Georges River. A larger

stone hospital building was designed by Francis

Greenway, built by convict labour and opened in

1825.

The Hospital is located in one of the fastest

growing areas in the State, with more than one

million people expected to reside in south western

Sydney by 2018

Liverpool Hospital has capacity for 857 beds, 23

operating rooms and 60 critical care beds, as well

as a comprehensive ambulatory care centre and is

home to the Ingham’s Institute of Applied Medical

Research.

With over 4500 staff, Liverpool Hospital campus

is one of the biggest and busiest tertiary referral

hospitals in Australia providing a comprehensive

range of clinical specialities. We have a strong

commitment to teaching and research across many

disciplines.
