BALL BRIEFSA TRIBUTE TO JACK McCAN N

It is with great sorrow that the CollegiansFootball Club must record the death of clubPatron and life-long supporter Mr . J .S. "Jack"McCann who died peacefully in his sleep onthe 8th day of June, 1982 at the age of 81 .

There can surely be few greater clubmenand supporters of aniateur sport than JackMcCann who provided distinguished serviceto Collegians and the V .A .F .A . for over 50years .

Jack McCann began his association withCollegians Football Club in 1925, shortly afterThe Great War when the club was on thebrink of disbanding due to lack of officialsand players . He initially joined the club tohelp as a goal umpire but was soon elevatedto the committee and to the role of selector .He served in each capacity for many yearsbefore being appointed Honorary Secretary .He remained as Secretary for 8 years beforebecoming President, in which position heserved the club for a further 10 years . Hesubsequently transferred much of hisattention to the running of the V .A .F.A . butwith his wife remained a staunch supporterof the Lions, attending all games whether atGeelong, in the mud at Parkside or in mid-September at Elsternwick Park, until the dateof his death .

He was a truly great clubman and servantof Collegians Football Club . in recognition ofwhich he was made club Patron in the early60's . In further appreciation of his greatserviceandsupportspanning 58yearsCollegianswere delighted to name their new clubroom, officially opened in 1981, "The J.S . McCannRoom" .

The Victorian Amateur Football Associationtoo owes a great deal to Jack McCann whoserved for many years on the V .A .F .A .Executive, being Honorary Secretary between1933 and 1946 . In addition Jack acted asPresident of the then associated body theJunior Amateur Football Association fromits inception in 1939 until 1948 and repre-sented the V .A .F .A . and J .A .F.A . on theAustralian Amateur Football Council formany many years . Indeed, he became HonorarySecretary of the A .A .F .C . and served in thatcapacity for 18 years while also representingthe A .A .F .C . on the Australian NationalFootball Council for a similar period .

As a result of his outstanding service to theV .A .F .A . Jack was awarded Life Membershipin 1950 and was subsequently made a Patron .He was awarded Life Membership of theA .N .F .C . in 1960 and of the A .A .F .C . in 1975 .His contribution to each body cannot beoverstated and his passing will sadden allsupporters of Amateur football .

The most profound sympathy of theCollegians Football Club is extended to Mrs.McCann and the McCann family upon theirgreat loss . We at Collegians were cheered tosee Mrs. McCann at the football last Saturdayand look forward to a continuation of herown 54 year association with Collegians andwith the V .A .F .A .

MORE 50'S AT OLD HAILEYBURIANSThe fifty-game milestone has been attained

by three more of the younger brigade at O .H .Last Saturday's game saw Ian Clydesdale playhis 50th gan i e, allainst the Rovers . "Horse"joined us in 1978 and played as a half-forwardflank <.;oalsneck in that year's Junior 2 sectionPremiership teani . He has also been knownto fly high and kick long from the half-backline, where he has played much of his football .Another member of that Premier team in1978 was Ian Ridovtt, who plays his 50thgame today . A sturdy utility player. "Ridders"has spent most of his career as it ruck-roveror half-back flanker where his applicationand determination have made him a valuableassett to the club . The third 50 game player isJeff Robertson, better known as "Sticks" tomost. Jeff ioined us in 1979, and played in the1980 Junior I Premiership team as a half-forward flanker, although he has probablyspent more time at full-forward where hispenchant for the high mark has earned himmany goals . In fact, "Sticks" kicked over 50-oals for that 1980 season . Congratulationsfrom all at O .H . to these three highly popularplayers and clubmen .

50 GAMES TO ST . KILDA C .B .O .C .FORWARD

Dale Collins plays his 50th game for th eSaints today against Geelong . Our leadingeoal kicker, Dale is a very talented and skilfulplayer with an uncanny knack of being ableto kick goals in the most difficult circum-stances . Last weekLi3ainst Assumption, Doug showed that hehas regained his marking ability, and with hisalways reliable kicking he should prove athorn in the side of his opponent today . regular senior player-this year. He playsmainly at full back these days but his goodmarking ability and palming out of the ballhas put him in the ruck and on occasions hehas been seen lining the goals up at fullforward . Well done to a good team member !

BANKER PLAYS 200thEverybody associated with Commonwealth

Bank F .C . wishes to extend their congratu-lations to Greg Dunkley on playing his 200thgame last week . "Dunks" started with theBankers in 1968 and in that time has notchedup a fine record complimented by deter-mination, courage and probably more thananything else, vocal enthusiasm .

Apart from his playing commitment, Greghas also been very active on the committeehaving served in various official capacitiessince 1972 . Greg is fortunate to have a veryunderstanding wife in Anna and it would beremiss of us if we did not take this opportunityto mention the hard work that Anna hasdone for the club over the years. Congratulations to Paul for hisfine effort in reaching the 100 game total .

100 AT ROVERLAN DCongratulations to Dave Wenzell on playing

100 games for Hampton Rovers. Dave hasbeen one of our quietest and most consistentgoalkickers over many seasons where his high

against the V .F.A . John has always been atremendous competitor on the field, he is asuperb mark and a powerful kick of the ball .At age 23 we don't see any reason why youcan't play 200 "Jonesy". Well done John andmore games to you from all at Marcellin O .C .ANOTHER CENTURY AT MARCELLI N

All at Marcellin Old Collegians congratulateAllan "Rowdy" Hardy on the achievement ofone hundred games for the club against OldScotch last Saturday . Al began with the clubback in 1976. He has played with the Seniors,Reserves and Warriors teams and over thisperiod has proved to be a very reliablecontributor whether on the backline or givinggood service in the ruck roving division . Al's"rowdiness-often goes unnoticed and unheardand sometimes it's impossible to shut him up,but we have managed to agree with him thata rumour be released that he'll play 150 gamesif his voice holds out. Apart from games"Rowdy" has managed to fit in time on thesocial committee and at meetings it's a bithard for him to get a word in . From all atM .O.C . well done Al and we will wait for thenext 50, but don't you hold your breath ,

marking and accurate kicking has left many abackman bewildered . Congratulations Daveand all at Hampton look forward to yournext 100 .

UMPIRES'CORNER

"PLAY ON" - A VALUE JUDGEMENTA field umpire having blown his whistle for

a free kick may elect to cancel such free kickby calling "play on" . This could be done if, inhis opinion, by enforcing such a free kick itwould be to the disadvantage of the teamreceiving the free kick .

The call "play on" must be loud, clear anddecisive and may be accompanied by a visualaction of the umpire's arm or arms .

The decision to call play on is more oftenthan not a difficult one for the field umpireto determine instantly, and consequently theumpire refrains from the call .

It is possible that if an umpire calls play onand the player receiving the benefit falls orslips to the ground and subsequently lossespossession of the ball, many players and, followers of the game would consider perhapsthat the umpire was wrong in penalising theteam for not allowing the player to go backand take the original free kick . Such criticismof course would not flow if the player gainedan advantage for his team through the umpirecalling "play on".

The outcome of the result of an umpire'sgood intentions can bring a negative result tothe teani offended against.

Umpires are therefore at times verycautious in cancelling free kicks and calling"play on" . If they knew for certain that theteam offended against was absolutely andunequivocably sure of gaining an advantagethey would not hesitate to call "play on" .
