  • One of the first lessons in communication requires a company to have a distinctive and

attractive logo plus an expressive baseline. The baseline is supposed to wrap up, in just a

few words, the essence of the company’s activities or products. Unless, of course, the logo is so well known that no extra

information is needed. Coca Cola does not need a baseline, saying it is good for quenching thirst, and Nike no longer needs

‘JUST DO IT’ to be recognized everywhere with just the ubiquitous inverted comma (or what, actually, is it?)

We’re not Coca Cola, nor are we Nike, andthat’s why, in all modesty, we thought we stillneed a baseline. For many years, we saidHELIOSCREEN, INTELLIGENT SUN CONTROL.That still holds true, of course, but we decid-ed the time has come for a change. The com-munication experts we work with came upwith the slogan THE SUN A LA CARTE whichwe liked, because it translates our message:with our products, you choose the amount of

heat and light from the sun, à la carte. Also, our broad range of products for various appli-cations allows you to pick the best solution,à la carte. We hope you like it, and agree withit. Up to us now to make it come true.

All of us at Helioscreen hope that you willenjoy this issue of ROOM WITH A VIEW. Ourobjective is to let you know a bit more aboutthe applications we cover and we are proudto feature some of the solar shading jobs ourcustomers have done with our fabrics or ourhardware systems. Incidentally, we welcomeyour comments and criticism, to make thenext issue even more to your liking.

May I take this opportunity to thank you, ourvalued customer, for the business we enjoyand for the confidence you gave us. We willcontinue to serve you, à la carte and to yourwishes.

NEW OFFICE ADDITION FOR HELIO-SCREEN | About a year ago, a new officebuilding was added to Helioscreen’s facil-ity in Lokeren, Belgium. The extension wasneeded after the merger of Helioscreenand Hunter Douglas Belgium and thedecision to bring both companies togeth-er under one roof. The field of architec-tural products (AP), mainly ceilings andcladding, is the territory of Hunter Dou-glas Belgium, while Helioscreen is prima-rily active in solar shading, with its rangeof fibreglass fabrics and complete blindsystems. But both companies have astrong reputation in the Belgian contractmarket, targeting architects, engineeringcompanies, main contractors and largeend-users. Therefore, a closer co-opera-tion seemed like a good idea.

The new building offers spacious, mod-ern accommodation to the AP-peopleand comprises a showroom for bothactivities as well as a modern conferenceroom. Equipped with – you guessed it --Hunter Douglas ceilings, Luxaflex outsideblinds and Helioscreen roller blinds. You’re welcome to come and see us!

  • Especially in an office environment, the ‘indoor climate’ is an important part of the working conditions and

one that is of great importance when it comes to promoting the

efficiency of work. ‘Indoor climate’ mainly has four components: thermal comfort (warm enough in winter, not too hot in the summer), visual

comfort (adequate light for the activity), ventilation (enough fresh outside air) and proper acoustics (absence of noise). Helioscreen can help in no

less than two of these areas: our range of fabrics for external solar shading helps reduce solar heat gain in the summer and thereby cuts the energy

consumption of air cooling installations. Our other product range, the light fabrics of the 2115 family for internal shading applications, has been

specially designed to help achieve visual comfort.

Because in an office environment, nowadaysjust about everybody, from the receptionist tothe Managing Director, has a PC on his deskand spends a fair amount of time working withcomputer applications. For reasons of com-fort and safety, light levels must be carefullycontrolled in order to avoid glare and annoy-ing reflections in the computer screen. Incom-ing light, direct from the sun or diffused fromclouds and environment, can vary in strengthin our area from as much as 80.000 lux on aclear, sunny summer day to as little as 1.000lux. For comfortable working conditions, however, luminance levels (1 lux = 1 lumen perm2) must be brought down to a value between

500 and 1.500 lux, depending on the type ofwork done. This requires additional windowshading, because most types of glass let mostof the light through. Ordinary double glazingtransmits appr. 80% of the light, and the mostadvanced glass, with special coatings, maybring this number down to appr. 40%. That isstill too much light on one of those clear, sunny days.

Helioscreen’s fabrics contribute to a healthybalance between light levels outside andinside. The light transmission values of all ourfabrics have been measured and are part ofour catalogue literature. They vary from as lit-tle as 3% (for some of the dense, heavy 2165Sergé fabrics) to 25% (for the very open Toprange of fabrics), depending not only on theweave, but also on the colour of the fabric. Our new range of STAR fabrics was designedto achieve two objectives at the same time:reflect as much energy back through theglazing and temper the amount of light let in.Most STAR fabrics have different colours frontand back. By placing the light colour towardthe glass, a better reflection of energy isachieved, helping in the thermal balance,

while the darker back side can be chosen tosuit the interior decoration, and the denseweave of the STAR range has a light trans-mittance factor of between 9 and 13%.

When you have applications in the area ofvisual comfort, let us help you!

  • The renovation of Procter & Gamble’s Headquarters in México City is one of the latest realisations of José C. Peña

Jurado and Juan Manuel Lemus de los Rios, both architects and founders of Grupo AD+D S.A. CV. As one of the

leading Mexican architectural firms, they have been specialising in corporate project development. Besides this 12000 m2 refurbishment project of Procter

& Gamble, Grupo AD+D have, since their foundation in 1997, already realised several prestigious projects in México such as Colgate Palmolive (12000 m2),

Zurich Compania de Seguros (7000 m2), Samsung Electronics de Mexico (3000 m2) and Microsoft de Mexico (900 m2).

    Project in the picture

The current building of Procter & Gamble con-tains almost 95% of glass facades. Since thecentral garden created a very comfortableworking environment, it was very importantthat after the renovation, the excellent viewinto the green areas was maintained as muchas possible.

Natural lighting was also very important inthis project. Internal lateral sidewalks takeyou from one part to the other. These side-walks are naturally illuminated because ofthe glass facades. Even though the buildinghas reflecting glass, sunlight comes throughand will raise the inside temperature. In order to obtain the best result, the archi-tects decided to work with a fabric that offerstransparency, but at the same time also pro-tects against the excessive sunrays and daz-zling light. Hence, the Natté 2115 fabric (colourpebble) was chosen to equip the windowswith more than 4500 m2 interior roller shades. Besides the transparency and heat reduction,

the Natté 2115 fabric has proven its superior-ity over other fabrics thanks to its flame retar-dancy (M1), dimensional stability (becausemade of glassfiber instead of polyester) andto the large variety of colours. Indeed, thespecial grey colour of the fabric matchesperfectly with the carpet designs and patternsinside the building.

In addition to the interior roller shades, Proc-ter & Gamble are considering using exteriormotorized roller shades with Natté 2165 for themain facade of the building. With Helioscreen’ssoftware programme, the expected savings intemperature and energy will be calculated.

Procter & Gamble Renovation Project hasbeen the largest project where Grupo AD+Dhave used Helioscreen fabrics until now, butdue to the excellent performance, more proj-ects will definitely follow.

  • Weaving is the core activity of Helioscreen and a cherished

department within our organisation. The hereafter following

    Weaving processWeaving process

YARN WAREHOUSEThe Screenglass yarn is a continuous glassyarn coated with a bulk-dyed polymer com-pound.The reason of choosing the glass yarn as acore is because of its unique properties: it isflame retardant, it is stable, it is resistant tohigh temperatures, bad weather conditionsand chemical agents and is very strong. Thecompound used for the coating of the glassyarn is made according to a special formulaso that the properties of the yarn are main-tained; it also contributes to:attractive colours, light solidity, UV-resist-ance, resistance against moisture, heatand cold.

WARPINGFirst, the warp threads have to be prepared, which means that they have to be wound ona warp beam, meticulously parallel to eachother with a uniform tension. This process, which is called "warping", is necessary to obtain a flat fabric.

WARP BEAM WAREHOUSEDepending on the width of the woven fabricthe warp beams are prepared on differentbeam widths which are stocked before beingconnected to the weaving loom.

WEAVINGThe weaving process is the operation of inter-lacing lengthways threads – the warp – withcrosswise threads – the weft – which resultsin a fabric according to a particular weave. Itis during the weaving operation that the Helio-screen fabrics obtain their specific proper-ties:-to eliminate glare and reverberation fromshining surfaces while preserving the view tothe outside-to provide a first class thermal insulationMaintaining a uniform fabric tension is veryimportant in this stage of the weaving process. For this purpose we weave on modern rapierweaving machines, which contribute to a greatextent to an optimum quality level.

  • HEAT SETTINGThe woven fabric now has to be "heatset" bya thermal treatment. The purpose of thisoperation is to fix the warp and weft threadsmutually, in order to ensure a smooth, flat sur-face and the dimensional stability of the fabric.

INSPECTION AND PACKINGAs soon as the fabric leaves the oven it passesan overall thorough inspection to identifyimperfections such as irregular yarns, dam-aged yarns, dust or stains. Then the fabric iscut into rolls of 50lm, packed and stocked.

WAREHOUSEThe rolls of 50lm are stocked in cardboardcylinders on different locations depending onthe weaving pattern, colour and the roll width. This results in 250 different product combi-nations of which each combination needs tobe stocked in a certain quantity depending onits sales volume.

  • EXTREMELY FLEXIBLE AND ALWAYSA LITTLE DIFFERENT | The Smartscreenrange is particularly flexible in every respect. There are various dimensions of headboxesthat can be combined with various types ofside channels and bottom bars. The systemsare available with motorised or manual oper-ation. And if you really want sun à la carte, choose fully-automatic operation. As far asthe type of solar shading is concerned, thereis a choice between a vertical roller or aMarkisolette screen.

Due to an intensive R&D, the products and installation techniques

for external sunprotection have been refined and optimised.

Our brand-new generation of solar shading systems is among the very best you can get.
