Lucas Wiring: A Simplified ApproachBucas wiring systems as used on

virtually all British cars since the1930s are a source of frustrationand bewilderment to a great many

sports car enthusiasts. In fact, Lucas wiring Is clearly engineered around a standardized color code and cable size formula. This system Is used on all Britishsports cars and once understood, is verysimple.

The following detailed explanation hasbeen excerpted from a Lucas technicalmanual which dates from the mid-1950s.The professional mechanic or die-hardenthusiast may wish to clip out this articlefor future reference. After all, this Information could be invaluable in sorting out the"Manumatlc" gearbox wiring of your 1957Borgward Isabella estate wagon!

Withfewexceptions, the electrical system of a motor vehicle can be consideredas a series of simple circuits, each consisting of the component, its switch and threewires - feed, switch wire and return. Onearth return systems, the return circuit isprovided by the frame of the vehicle. Although In the case of components insulated from the chassis, an earthing lead Isalso necessary. Some variatldns are to befound, such as fuses, two-wayswitchingand so, but the principle of feed wire, switch wire and return remains, and it isupon this principle that the Lucas colorscheme Is based. The Insulation on feedwires carTy a main color only, switch wireshave the main color of feed with a coloredtracer running the length of thewire, whilereturn earthing leads are black.

Wherecomponentsare switchedorcon-trnlled in theearthed side, that is, with theswitch wire on the return side of the unitinstead ofon the feed side, this is normallyindicated by the use of a black tracer.

Main colors, of which there are seven, are allocated to the circuits as shown below.The. practiceof feeding certain of theaccessories through the ignition switchand auxiliary lighting-circuits through thesideand tail lamp switch is recommended,so that the side and tall lamp switch andignition switchwires becomefeeds to othercircuits or, in effect, master switch wires.

Cable Colors

BROWN Battery circuit. From batteryor starter switch to ammeter

or control box and (with compensated voltage control)feeding lighting and ignitionswitches (and radio, when fitted) from control box terminal. Also, from starter switchto electric clock, inspectionsockets and batteryauxiliariesfuse (from which are fed electric horns, cigar lighter, interior lights, etc.).

YELLOW Generator circuit. From gen-eratortermlnal tocorresponding control box terminal andto ignition warning light

WHITE Ignition circuit and all requirements essentialwhenIgnition is switchedon but which do not re- |quire fusing, e.g., electric petrol pump, starter solenoidswitch, etc.

GREEN Auxiliary circuits fedthrough Ignition

switch and protected by theignition auxiliaries fuse. e.g.,stop lamp, fuel gauge, direction indicators, windscreenwipers, etc.

BLUE Headlamp circuits. Fedthrough terminal on lightingswitch.

RED Side and tail lamp circuits. Fedfrom terminal on lightingswitch. Included In these circuitsare fog lamps, panel lightsand otherlamps required onlywhen the side lamps are inuse.

BLACK Earth circuits. II a component is not Internallyearthed, a cable must betakento a good earthing point onthe chassis.

Hopefully, the above information, combined with a proper wiring diagram for

your car, will help tum that multi-coloredmass of spaghetti Into an understandablewiring system. Don't get discouraged; Lucas really did make an effort to use logic intheir wiring.

Electrical Trouble-ShootingTwo basic tools are essential for

trouble shooting electrical problems - awiringdiagram, and a 12volt test light.Atest light Is an inexpensive little tool thatlooks likea cross between an ice pick andan electric screwdriver. Simple to use. itis connected by its clip to a ground. Thesharp probe is poked around the "hot-leads. Ifthe lamp lights, there's power, atleast to that part of the circuit For example, clip the test light to a bumper boltor othergoodgroundand touch theprobeto a bulb contact on the "hot" side - thebulb will light, (so long as the light is"on").

Most lamp problems are convenientlyfound In the lamp unit itself. The greatmajority are caused by bad bulb con

Sports Car vb College Tuition? •Besides the obnoxious red "fun" fur covering a

badly deteriorated dash board, no carpets, some notwell done body patching and poor tires, the majorproblem seemed to be that the only electrical itemsthat worked were the headlights and the stop lights.A previous owner had converted the electrical system to an alternator and screwed upeverything. Afterdeterminingthat thealtematorhad beenwiredwrong, things started to fall intoplace. All of the wires had }been cut (probably to findout why a miswiredalternator wouldn't keep thebattery charged) and after hours ofcarefully reattaching, soldering and tracing wires with awiring diagram, finally everything whirred, clicked, litor flashed as it wassupposedto.

As oftoday, Iprobably have about $2600 totalInvestment ina beautiful carthatisunique andthrilling todrive. < Fickle MGA OwnerThe hardest part of restoring the Twin Cam was not

having anything to compare it to, especially when itcame to getting the engine smoothed out. We have afactory shop manual, but it leaves a lot out. 1calledaround to get an idea ol what the engine is supposedto idle like (a little bit "lumpy' with a loud, stacattoexhaust note) and things appear to be doing well now- good oil pressure and no smoking. And. now we'vefound that an MGAis cramped and tight and steerslike a truck compared to any MGB.

tacts orcorroded grounds. Don't assumethat there are major problems until thenon-functioning unit is completely inspected. Using the wiring diagram, workyour way back through the circuit to theconnectors, and from there to t he sourceof power such as the fuse box or terminalconnector. By this method, you shouldbe able to determine whether an entirecircuit or the individual unit is at fault. Ifthe circuit is dead, track the problemfrom the fuse box or battery' side of thatparticular circuit. Proceed through thecircuit components one at a time, usingthewiringdlagram as aguide. Don't panic!

After reading both these articles, youshould be well on your way to troubleshooting Lucas electrics.

Installed! MGB Dynamic SuspensionAlan PattersonSomewhere in England

MossEurope customerAlanPatterson, MGCCNorwester Competitor, reports on fittingtheMGBDynamicSuspensiontohisMGB. Originally a Moss Europeproduct, it's now available here in the US..

• am an out and out enthusiast of the^^H MG marque In general, and ofthe

had they not takenthat fateful decisionin 1980. I have often

mused with col-leagues and friendsexactly what changes would be appropriate.A redesignof thefront suspension wasalways high on the list of priorities, and loand behold. Moss Europe has come upwith a package, probably as good as anything i had discussed in the past.

I heard a rumor that this package wasunder development and was quick to putmy name on the list for early delivery.Seeing the suspension on the Moss standat MG World only made me more impatient to get hold of a kit That day dawnedon the 7th of November, and 1made plansto fit the kit on the 17th, my first freeSaturday.

Thekit is verycomprehensiveand evenincludes the twodrillsrequired to make aslight modification tothe front crossmem-

ber. I-et me say earlyon that this conver

sion is completely removable, unlikesomccurrent conversions

available from other outlets. A good pluspoint in myview, especiallyIIa later sale oft he vehicle may beprejudiced by themodi-fications. is that you can always return itto the original specification.

Anyone who has already rebuilt thefront suspension of an MGB will have no

difficulty in completing this conversionin 4 - 5 hours, and no doubt in some cases, much less time than that The only extratools required (other than those normallyused to rebuild the standard suspension)are an electric drilland a half round roughfile.

If you have not had your front suspension apart for a long while (over 18months) I would recommend you startfirst thing in the morning. That way, Ifyouencounterany dismantling problems, like seized bolts, Oct's face it who hasn'twith MGB suspension!), not only will youhave time to cope, but your local MGparts shop will still be open to supply anynecessary replacements.

The conversion process itself is covered in comprehensive detail in the in

structions supplied, and if followed to the

letter, will present noproblems. My conversion took a little

longer than the timedescribed above, but this I have to admit, was due to two self-inflicted problems.Firstly, Itried to be clever and only releasethe anti-roll bar link from the pan. Fineduringdismantling, but the trapwas sprungon reassembly, when unbeknown to me. Iburred the thread over when reinsertingthe link. To cut a long story short, a newlink was required to save the day. one anda half hours later! The moral of this storyis to follow the instructions properly. Secondly, Idid not at that time possess a goodhalf round rough file, which would havesaved the half an hour of filing per sidecaused by the small, almost smooth, excuse fora file 1had. These points apart, theconversion went very well without any

seized bolts to con

tend with.

At the time I fitted

my kit. there wasvery little informa-t ionabout springsettings (to adjust rideheight) or dampersettings, and I spent

an enjoyable time finding the best settingsto suit my taste. One thing that did dropright first time was the ride height. This isset byadjustingaringonthedampcrunit.and Iset mine up with three threads showing under the locking ring from the bottomof the unit This gives a ride height of

My overwhelming firstimpression with the kitfitted was the "magiccarpet ride" comparedto the standard set-up.

Please continue to keep sending meMoss Motoring. Although I have not ordered parts for some time now. the articles and classic-fied ads remind me of my1959 MGAand 1967 MGB.My plan in life isa simple one - to sample as many sportscars as I can! Since obtaining my driver'slicence 17 years ago. I have had the pleasure of owninga 1969 Chevy CamaroZ-28.1977 Toyota Celica, 1973 Datsun 240-Z,1981 MazdaRX-7,1959 MGA. 1986 Porsche944. and of course, the 1967 MGB.

I am currently driving a 1991 MazdaMiata, but just last week. I went for a 45

minute drive during the height of rushhour traffic to takea lookat a veryoriginaland unrestored 1967 MGB GT Special Edition. The gray paint had faded and theleather scats were torn and cracked, buteverything was intact. Including the blackcrinkle finish dashboard, wood steeringwheel and shift knob. My overwhelming firstimpression with the kit fitted was the "magic carpetride" compared to thestandard set-up. My car hadbeen absolutely standard, apart from a 3/4' anti-rollbar and V8 wishbonebushes. I had made mental

notes about the ride, priorto fitting the kit It was clearthe standard suspensiondid not really start to absorb today's road bumpsuntil travelling at 40 - 50mph. Then after 70 mph.things deteriorated onceagain. With the kit Installed, all but the severest potholes are absorbed withgreat ease from 10 mph upwards. Steering feel hasbeen retained and im

proved by transmitting thesense of the suspension's Iworking, but not so much of the physicalbumping. The most telling Improvementwas on my first journey home on a wetnight, approaching a well known roundabout, with a particularly bumpy entry. Normally thesebumps caused oneof the front tyres tolock up intermittently. However, with the new sus

pension, the wheelstracked the surface

of the road more

closely and gave better braking. Quite aneye opener!

In terms of handling, turn-In has beenimproved and the precision In response tosteering wheel input enhanced, so thatpositioning the car, especially in bumpycomers, has becomea science rather thana vague art. Finally the B's Achilles heel, ofpush-on understecr, has been lessenedespecially in the wet. though no doubt if 1really pushed hard In the dry. the sameimprovement would be apparent. I havenot yet found a safe. open, dry corner totest this.

It's not magic that isneeded to accomplish this, butrather a thorough and accuratetune-up. followed by simple by-the-book maintenance. On carsequipped with emission controls, ifeverything is working properly, and is in propercondition, the car will pass an emissionstest. II It does not pass, something on thecar isn't functioglng properly.

All cars work better and pollute lesswhen brakes are not dragging, wheel bearings are properly adjusted and lubricated, and when driven sensibly. Evenwheel alignment makes Its contribution. The following outline should serve as a general guideto cleaner, better driving; you'll find complete Instructions and details in the workshop manual appropriate foryour particular car.

A Note On AsbestosTom HughesPasco, WA

Asbestos Is nothingmore than a rock. In its natural form It comes in fibersthat can be woven Into allkinds useful materials.Rocks don't bum. so asbestos is used anywhere highheat is a problem, especiallyplaces likebrake shoes. So. why allthe concern?

The problem Is the small size of theasbestos fibers. They can be less than 10microns, way too small to beseen with thenaked eye These fibers can pass rightthrough a regular dust mask and lodgedeep inside your lungs.

Asbestos particles In your lungs havebeen linked to at least two diseases. Firstis a chronicdiseasecalled Asbestosis.Thisdiseaseisscarringofthelungtissuecausedby exposure for a long period of time

The second disease is called

• Coil & Wires

-coll output (best checked with an oscilloscope)

- wires of correct type and in good condition

- good, solid electrical connections

- correct coll polarity

•SparkPlugs

- correct type: reach, heat range ("reach"is the length of the threaded shank, heatrange refers to the spark plug's ability totransfer heat - Not how "hot" the spark is)- clean and correctly gapped- sealing washer in good condition

Carburetion:

- good mechanical condition (clean: linkages free, but without excess looseness;throttle shafts unworn; fuel, vent, and overflow fittings and connections tight and

Mesothelioma. This disease Is a very rare form ofcancer In the liningaroundthe lungs or abdomen. It Isalmost always caused byasbestos exposure, theproblem Is, nobody is surehow much It takes.

Yourchances of getting either of thesediseases goes up withthe amount ofexposure you get.

Remember, the Idea Is to limit yourexposure. The best way is to buy an asbestos-approved respirator and use disposable coveralls. This is impractical for onebrake Joba year.So instead of using compressed air to clean brakedrumsand backing plates, wash with clean brake solventPut the residue Inplastic bagsand disposeof them properly. The disposable coveralls are still a good idea. When you'redone, take them off. put them In a plastic

unobstructed; no vacuum leaks)- properly adjusted (mixture, lloat height, slow Idle, fast Idle, choke, synchronizationof multiple carbs.)

- clean and unrestricted air filter (a dirty/clogged air filter will dramatically enrichyour air/fuel mixture)

- correct amount and type of oil In SU andZenith-Strombergdashpots(generally,theheavier the oil, the richer the mixture onacceleration).

Compression:Animportant factor is equal poweroutputfrom each cylinder. This is largely governed by equal compression In all cylinders (assuming proper carburetion &ignition).

- Valves (clearance, seating, timing)- Piston rings

- Head gasket-Valve guides (not worn)

- Pushrods (not ftbent, correct C /length)

- Rocker arms &shaft (not wom)

Venting of assemblies Is vital totheir proper operation. A

plugged differential vent, forexample, cancause oil to beflown out pastthe oil seals -

bag. and get rid of them.

Most importantly, keep the kids away, and don't expose anyone else if you don'thave to.

Asbestos is something we are going tohave around for a long time; If we usecommon sense we can use It and protectourselves at the same time

(Tom willreceive a giftcertificateforhiscontribution.)

Asbestos & MossHere at Moss Motors, we've been at

tempting to eliminate asbestos productsfromour inventory lor years now,and planto completely switch over to alternativeheat-resistant materials within the nexttwo years. We've stopped carrying brakeshoes with asbestos lining, and have attempted to seek out vendors that sell alternatively manufactured products. Someof the products that still contain asbestosare exhaust gaskets and head gaskets, infact, any gasket associated with heat Atthe present time, there are no alternativecomposition gaskets available for many ofthe gaskets we sell.

Ifyou receive a gasket that wefeelmayhave some asbestos content In It, we takegreat precautions to package it safely. Ourpackers wear asbestos-approved respirators, special coveralls and gloves andrepackageallgasketsIn6 mil.thickplasticbags, working ina purification hood, so jthat no dust can escape. Every product ithuspackagedblabel]edclearry(seeabove Ileft) in black and yellow.

Obviously, onecan't take these extremeprecautionswheninstalilnganewexhaust jsystem, but please, take note of the aboveand remember to be cautious, bbbb I

Research & Development

Twodifferentyet interchangeable stock'.pi-clf ication camshafts were fitted to theMG TC-TD and TF engines when new. Inaddition, the factory offered 3/4 and fullrace cams, not to mention a variety ofspecial aftermarket "racing" cams. All ofthese cams called for different valve clearance settings, which can cause no end ofconfusion when trying to adjust tappetswith a camshaft of unknown origin. T-se-ricsvalvecoverswereoriginallyfitted witha brass LD. plate indicating the correctvalveclearances. In some cases, the plateshave been changed or altered, and theymayor maynotcorrectly relate to the camcurrently fitted.

TCs and TDs toXPAG 24115. were fittedwith .019' cams. wrdlelaterTDs and all TFswerefitted with .012" cams. The earlycamswere superseded by the .012" cams In theearly 1960s, so the original .019" camshave frequently been replaced, and haverarely ever been seen In late TD or TFengines. Matters do get a bit more confusing when other grinds are taken Into consideration. The factory 3/4 race camsshould be set to .015", while the full racecams should be set to .012' on the Intakeside, but .019" on the exhaust side. Needless to say this has been the subject offrequent calls to our technical staff!

We have received some Inter

esting Insight Into this problemfrom William Bremerol Cape Elizabeth, Maine. William has come upwith a (airly easy means of Identifyingcamswhich should work90%of the time. Since the timing onthe early stock cam is considerably different from the later .012"cam. it's possible to plot the actual distance along the circumference of the crank pulley betweenwhen the number one exhaust

valve closes and the intake valveopens. This distance works out to1 1/2" on the .019" cam versusonly a 1/4" on the .012" cam. Theonly serious flaw In this easymethod of checking is that thesomewhat rare factory 3/4 racecam has the exact same number

of degrees between when the exhaust valve opens and the intakevalve closes.

MikeGoodman's method, based onover30 years of experience, is to attach avacuum gauge to the engine, set the valvesto .019" and record the vacuum readingand Idling RPM. Now reset the valves to.012' and compare the figures. If thevacuum, and RPMs drop, you don't have a.019" cam. This test can be repeated to seeIfyou have a 3/4 or full race cam. Incidentally, a vacuum gaugeadaptorcan be madeby drilling out a sparecarb. to intake manifold bolt, and soldering a tube of suitablediameter for attachment to the vacuumgauge. Then lit themodified bolt inplace of one ol theupper carb. to manifold bolts. The upper tapped holes extend directly Into theintake port ol themanifold!

If the engine Isdismantled, theeverpopular .012" cam

Om-'i'i-C39Overheating...

Overheatingmay be caused by improperpoint gap. Incorrect timing, a bad radiatorcap, sludge in the cooling system, dragging brakes, loose fan belt, defective thermostat (or no thermostat), or no water inthe system. Checkthese first ifyou have anoverheating problem.

Oil Filter

Overtightening the filter center fixingbolt can cause the cause rubberseal (Jointring) to split with consequent oil leakage.

When replacing an element, the centerbolt should be tightened to a maximumtorque figure oi 15 lbs. ft. (2.08 kg. m.).

MGB Hood Release Cable

Bob YoungEaston, PA

The hood release cable on my '75 MGBhas always been a source of lurking mistrust, ever since I purchased the car several years ago. If the cable should break at

Wire Tie

the release mechanism or become other

wise disabled (l-e~ my kind ol luck), itwould be necessary to cut thegrille screenor other adjacent panel, to gain access tothe release lever actuated by the cable.

An easy solution to this potential nightmare dilemma is provided by a commonplastic "wire-tie". Install a heavy duty 14"length wire-tie as follows (see diagram):Form the loop end around the under-hoodrelease lever tip as shown. Route the remaining wire-tic length over top of thecable sheath and through the panel holeused lor hood safety catch. (Route mustprovide smooth pull-action lor "tie".)

Tuck the tail of the tie in position alongthe grille screen, so that it can be easilyaccessed by reaching through the cut-outIn the rubber bumper (right hand side, facing car). Your emergency hood releasecable Is ready If needed.

(Bob will receive a gift certificate for hiscontribution.)

If your shllt lever rattles, or you areassembllnga car, the lackol available partsto correctly install this shifter need nolonger put you off. as with about 3 dollars,rattle-free driving is within reach.

The original Triumph shop floor modification (see sketch) called for a .250" diagonal hole at the bottom ol the lever, intowhich a short spring and hardened steelplunger were placed to keep the lever fromvibrating. While neither of those are available, .250' (1/4") steel ball bearings (#329-510) and a 5/8" long x 1/4" diameter steelspring Irom a hardware store or machineshop accomplishes the same purpose, andthe ball bearings are harder than the 1/4'drill rod originally used!

When finishing bodyrepairs. try to keepthe grinding, filing, and sanding strokeshorizontal rather than vertical, especiallyon large relatively flat areas. This helps toprovide light reflections which minimizeany ripples or waves in the panel. Verticalstrokes can make a straight panel lookwavy, even when it's not!

tween 2 warehouse In Goieta. CA plus8.000 squart feet in New Jersey. Our biggest warehouse In the U.K is over 20.000square feet and is only one of 6 differentlocations. We do receive air freight ihfp-ments irom our U.K. facilities twice a

month, plus at least one lull ocean-shipped container each month.

Our operating philosophy has alwaysbeen to look at obsolete parts to seewhich ones need to be reproduced inorder to keep our cars on the road, ratherthan simply selling that small percentageol parts that generate the most sales. While we are certainly the largest Britishsports car parts specialist in the business, we really need your support to justify the expense of reproducing obscureparts. In many cases, even a small production run can be a many year supply. As an example, we are responsible lor theworld's only supply ol MG TC rear axlering & pinion gears. Even on a worldwidebasis, we only produce these every 5-7years. Without this commitment, a lot ofTCs (the car which started it alU) wouldbe non-drivable.

Although it's easy to become frustratedwhen a part you desperately desire is notavailable, take a second to think on thebright side. Ifnot for companies like Moss, run by fellow British sports car enthusiasts, it's possible that even the very basicparts, from point sets through throw-outbearings, could be now obsolete. The5000 plus parts that we have reproducedIrom scratch will be just a drop in thebucket itvmother few years. Remember,it's your support as both a lover of Britishsports cars and as a Moss customer thatallows us to search lor. to stock, and tomanufacture those items that fill ourware

house shelves. So, the next time you pickup your phone, your oily lingers dialingour 800 number In desperation, you'llknow just how that UPS red label emergency part got to you.

each. These product lines may.not beprofitable, but they have kept hundredsof British sports cars In operating condition. If you've ever experienced needingan essential Item to get your car on theroad that Is just not available, then youknow the Incredible frustration it produces. Fortunately, with a company fullol enthusiasts owning Triumphs, MGs.and Healeys. there are a lot of peopledemanding that new parts be sought outor retooled! (Admittedly a very selfishattitude, but one that affects your part'ssupply quite positively!) Sometimes It'shard to imagine that a warehouse that isstocked with over two and a hall millionparts is missing some key ones!

While backorders do occur, our fillrate on orders is over 90*. Our biggestbackorder problems stem from suppliersthat advise us 4 or 5 months alter ordersare placed, that the part has gone NLS(the heartrending abbreviation lor "NoLonger Supplied"). At that point, we mayhave very low, or perhaps no stock at all.If you've ever been backordcred on a newproduct or sale item, and you are understandably annoyed at the time, think olthe Moss purchasing team's reaction, which resembles a hospital's "code blue".Wewill make every effort to resource the

MOSS MOTORING,PAGE 6

product and frequently succeed In gettingan NLS Item backon line in 2-3 months.Ifan Item Isexpected to be out ofstock fora lengthier period (due to a manufacturersetback or to time needed to retool andreproduce) we will make the item NYA(not yet available), and If it's a very Important item, we'll make it NWA(notifywhen available). When you call and ordera part that becomes NWA, we fill out acard with your name and address, alongwith the part number. When It arrivesback in stock, we send out that card toyou so that you may call and reorder Ifyou're still Interested.)

Not only are we the world's largestretailer of British sports car parts (a claimthat seems to be bandied about by thosewho are not), we are also the largestwholesaler, selling frequently to our competitors. Where we get into trouble oncein a while, Is when a wholesaler buys aquantity ol Items which may completelywipe out the number on hand which ourcomputer calculated to be a three year'ssupply. That's when we really have toscramble, and of course, that's when youmay wonder why such a part is availableeverywhere but Moss. This is sometimesthe reason!

We have always actively bought bulkquantities of "obsolete" factory stocks,Including the entire north American British Leyland inventory Irom both theireast and west coast warehouses. This

amounted to eight 40-loot containers, packed tightly with difficult-to-llnd partslor Triumph. MG.and Austin-Healey. (Weadded thousands ol part numbers to ourInventory!) We still have large quantitiesol some Items that fearless (ounder AlMoss bought 15 to 20 years ago. such asTC steering arms and 100-4 BN1 synchrohubs.

Moss Motors, both here and In En

gland, inventories over 30,000 differentproducts. Of these, over 5000 are reproduced exclusively on our behalf. Our reproduction Items are produced In one ofthree Moss-owned manufacturing facilities, or through independent manufacturers working on our behalf around theworld. Wedoactively purchase and manufacture parts in England, Belgium, Germany. Italy, Portugal, Taiwan, Australia.Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, Argentina, Canada, and of course, the good oldU.S.A..Like the enthusiasm for our sportscars, you can say our parts are trulyinternational!

Apart from a splendiddisplay of prc-1955 MGs,includingtwoM typesanda P type built for Le Mans,we were particularly impressed by a feature wefirst observed some twoyears ago at this samemeet. This is the "SafetyFast" check, where participants cars arc Inspectedby qualified personnel Inthe areas most vital toensure safe and last running of these road warriors (the youngest ofwhich is now 35 yearsold)! The inspection is free andcovers such Items as

steering, brakes, shocks, suspension and manyother Items, and while byno means wholly complete, is an invaluableguide as to the conditionof the car at the time olinspection. We at Mossheartily endorse this feature and recommend it to other clubs as a means of making attendance at any event worthwhile.Owners of cars that pass the rigorousinspection are rewarded with a unique"SafetyFast" pin, and the owner receives arecord ol the

The driver of the 18-wheeler. however, doesn't slow down - he can.'t - because his vehicle has no brakes and isoverloaded by some 16, 000 lbs, plus 30other faults found afterward. After what, you ask? The truck crosses over and sideswipes the Spitfire, and only the sturdypassenger compartment of the little Triumph saves John from being killed. Johnswears the car saved his life!

As theImpact of his confinement settled in onJohn, there were moments ofdarkdespair, which he alleviated by detailing the TR6over the next fouryears, to such a degreethat it won numerous awards at car shows, shown by a relative.

In June ol 1986, having graduated fromlaw school. Johnheard of a TR3A

which might be forsale. An old lady hadhad it for 10 or 15years, and Johnwent up to herhouse to find the

saddest looking1958TR3A anyone had ever seen! Everything required restoration but John convinced her that it could be done and shetold him to take it away...her gift to him!

Over the next four years, John painstakingly rebuilt the Triumph from hiswheelchair, assisted by his friend RonNader. Obviously there were some thingsJohn couldn't do. but not much! As hesays.'lf 1can reach It, Ican work on It", and"If I can lift it. it's mine to do"! And do It hedid, over 2500 hours of work on the Triumph, resulting in a supreme, original Inevery detail vehicle, which can be held asan example for all future restorers. Words
