Students
forRENEW A Group dedicated to helping end the threatof Unexploded Ordnance (UXOs) in Vietnam.
THE ISSUE:
In the late 1950’s to the mid 1970’s, the United
States participated in a devastating war on Vietnamese
soil. American troops dropped three times more bombs
on the small nation of Vietnam than were dropped in all
of World War II by both sides. For the US, the war ended
when they retreated the last of their troops on April 30,
1975. For us, the war is a thing of the past. However,
for the Vietnamese, the war did not end in April of
1975, and still continues today.
In the past 32 years, since the official end of the
war, over 42,000 innocent Vietnamese civilians have
been killed by UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) left over by
American Troops from the war.
An organization called Project RENEW is dedicated
to help reduce the risk of UXO accidents. Project
RENEW is located in central Vietnam in the Quang Tri
Province, the site of the war’s f iercest battles.

Project RENEW is run and operated by the
Vietnamese themselves, so it is evident that they
are dedicated to their cause. Rarely does a model
that is so low-cost touch the lives of so many
people. Because it has been so successful,
Project RENEW would like to expand itself to the
entire province, however, because of lack of
funds, their budget only allows them to operate in
two of the Province’s ten districts. We can help
Project RENEW expand itself; we can help save the
lives of thousands of innocent people.
