HEY GUYSOUR EDITOR HAS A FEW WORDS TO SAY TO YOU SO PIPE DOWN AND LISTEN TO WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY, ALRIGHT? SORTED

What’s that I hear? Gasps of amazement and ecstasy as the sparkling new

pages of The Student Magazine reach your unbelieving eyes, causing

momentary blindness as they dazzle with their entertainment prowess? Once

you’ve picked yourself up off the floor and managed to steady your

quivering hands long enough to turn the pages, you’ll realise that The Stu-

dent Magazine has had a complete and improving overhaul.

So exactly what wonders await you in these pages of pure joy? After a blitz

clear-out some of our regulars have managed to remain, with a few shiny new

gems sneaked in. Been a naughty/ drunken/ messy little student this month?

Then keep an eye out for the Pages of Shame… or perhaps you’ve fallen

victim to our sneaky Student reporter?

As always, our mystical reader of the stars has appeared in a puff of

glittering smoke to give an educated insight into what the Signs have in store

for you in 2011, and we give you absolutely no excuse to be buried within a

textbook this month – check out “What A Gwan?” our all encompassing listings

pages enough to tempt any lethargic student out into the wilds.

February brings us that inevitably soppy day of love, romance and, with any

luck, a mischievous spot of sexy time. Of course, we wouldn’t want you to be

lost in a stormy sea of fluffy teddy bears and heart-shaped biscuits, thus

we bring you our tips and tricks for a successful Valentine’s, whether you be

loved up or riding solo.

But I can see you are simply itching to dive in to the pond of pure editorial

bliss that awaits you so I’ll hold you back no longer – go ahead, intrepid

students, brace yourselves for a wild ride and I’ll see you on the other side

with a damp cloth to mop your sweating brow.

Enjoy.

WHAT A GWANTHERE’S NO NEED TO STRAY AWAY FROM UNIVERSITY THIS MONTH WITH SO MUCH GOING ON YOU’D BE A FOOL TO LEAVE THE COMFORT OF THE UNION...

2011 Student Union Officers ElectionNominations 9:00 Mon 17th Jan until 12:00 Fri 11th Feb.

Sheffield University Union is looking for eight enthusiastic and determined students to work together and have the passion to lead and improve the union, helping to better the lives of students. Each position in the union has a specific role and importance; could you see yourself being president? If not then there are many different roles to apply for which could suit you, contact the union for more information. Each officer takes a year out during or after their studies to work full time, earning a salary, which could help them fund future studies. All you need to do is nominate yourself and submit your application no later than 11th February. Do you think you have what it takes?

Bar One: Exam Slam 2011Thu 3 Feb 2011 10:00 til 2:00

Bar One’s legendary end of exams slam is taking place on Thursday 3rd February and it is guaranteed to be huge. Not feeling too rough from ROAR! the night before? Then get yourself down to Bar One as early as possible, as it is bound to be packed. Doors open at 10am and don’t close until 2am so if you do have other things to do, you still have plenty of time to take advantage of the cheap drink and food promotions as well as enjoying the amazing atmosphere with all your fellow students.

Live Wire and Sheffield Students Union present the 2011 Student Band Competition which will be taking place in the Raynor Lounge through-out February and March. This year the prizes are better than ever for the two lucky bands that win the competition, includ-ing a slot supporting a well known touring band. There are three heats, with the final being held in the Foundry, which should be a very exciting night for all of the bands, especially the winners. Unfortunately, the application process has now ended but you can still go along and give the bands your support!

8

Page 9: The Student // Feb 2011

Mondays’ total request party is back for the new year and prices are cheaper than ever. Celebrate the end of exams by getting to the Union and taking advantage of the fantastic drink offers. Many drinks are only £1, including VK, Carlsberg bottles and Strongbow pints. You can expect the usual chart hits and what you request is up to you. Doors open at 11pm and before midnight tickets are only £1 as well. With drinks and entry at only £1, this is a night out that you can definitely afford on a student budget.

SHU Fest 2011

Do you have a special tal-ent? If yes, then this could be your chance to shine as from the 7th to 13th of March, Sheffield Hallam are holding a festival which intends to celebrate the impressive talents of some of the University’s students and staff. If you are in a band, a dancer or have any other interesting skill then it is up to you to get involved. Whatever your passion may be, the University wants to hear from you. All you need to do is go onto the union website and fill out a short survey, it is that easy.

The nomination period has already begun but it’s not too late to put yourself forward to become a Sheffield Hallam Union Officer. Nomination period closes on 25th February so you still have plenty of time to make your mind up and get your application in. The Union are looking for six new representa-tives, with a wide range of different roles and responsibilities. The job descriptions are all outlined on the Union website and all queries are to be sent to the current Democracy and Communications officer. You also can get the chance to shadow a current officer for the day to see if you think the job is right for you. Give it a go!

In March, the fourth annual BUCS Championships is return-ing to Sheffield and if you’ve ever thought you’d like to do some volunteering, then this is a great opportunity for you. Over a seven day competi-tion you will have the chance to witness world class athletes doing what they do best in some of Sheffield’s sporting venues. Volunteers are needed to help out during the competi-tion performing many different roles, including ticket selling. No experience is necessary and any travel costs you may have will be reimbursed! Take part, make new friends and get some beneficial work experience. For more information, have a look at the volunteering section on the Union website and apply as soon as possible.

For more information about the opportunities and to apply to for a place get in touch with the Commu-nity Development Co-ordinator; Katy Weston on 0114 2255003 or email her at [email protected]

Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and… The Student loves you? That’s why we’ve compiled a guide f illed with all things Valentine, whether you be loved up or riding solo.

Imagine catching your loved one’s eye over a towering pile of popa-

doms, giggling over a spicy chicken Jalfrezi and flirting over a freshly

cooked peshwari naan. Ever heard of the legend of the 7 spices? No?

Then use Valentines as an excuse to find out. 7 Spices Balti on West Bar holds the secret, along with unique

décor and unbeatable atmosphere. Tantalise your taste buds with

tempting Indian flavours; chef’sspecials include Fish Massalam,

Macon Murgh, Mango Chicken and Tandoori King Prawn Masala.

Fancy dabbling in a taste of Thai luxury this Valentines? Then look no

further than Patoo on Ecclesall Road - a stylish haven of premium Thai cui-sine. We tend to think Thai is the food of love, and with intriguing treats like Gai Ma-Nao, Moo Pad Kraprao and Hed Med Mamung Himmapharn who

wouldn’t be seduced? The special Valentine’s set menus are available

from the 13th to 15th February, with the ‘Love Is Joy’ version including the choices of bundle of asparagus and tiger prawn, chicken green curry, jas-

mine steamed rice and a Thai dessert. www.patoothai.comtel: 0114 266 8196

EATING OUT

perhaps you left it too late to book a decent restaurant. Perhaps the only time they can fit you in is 1am. Do not fear – staying in is the new going out. Chuck out your housemates, pop in the Marvin Gaye CD and impress with a delectable feast to put seduction in mind. Picture the scene: twinkling fairy lights, rose petals scattered on the chairs, places set for two with sparkling cutlery, cork popped and a gourmet Italian meal sat oozing taste anticipa-tion on the plates. The reality? A “romantic” takeaway pizza eaten out of a greasy box on the sofa. But no longer need the former be merely a dream! Here at The Student we know how to cheat a bit, with our allies in cooking crime lying in wait at Italian Express in Walkley. Offering something quite a bit different to your local takeaway, the guys at Italian Express prepare every single dish to order, with authentic ingredients imported from Italy. Think Cozze Picccanti (mussels cooked with chilli, white wine and tomato sauce) to start, followed by Pollo Diana (filleted breast of chicken cooked with mushroom, red wine, mustard and on-ion, brandy and cream), topped off with home-made tiramisu… all like Mama used to make, delivered to your door! (And who needs to know you didn’t cook it yourself…?)www.italian-express.net, tel: 0114 231 5757

Mmm, a good old smooch over a spicy curry. What more could you need to get the Valentine’s party started? We know what you’re thinking; a dodgy curry is never the recipe for success where some loving is concerned. But look no further than Inteha in Walkley for an authentic, lip-smackingly tastyIndian treat.

GIFTS OF LOVEiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

With Valentine’s Day creeping ever closer, the deadline for find-ing that perfect present is looming. Don’t panic – rushing out on the 13th to invest in a tacky pink teddy from the newsagents will definitely score zero points on the seduction scale. To ease the pressure, our shopping pixies at The Student present to you the Valentine’s Shopping Guide; we’ve done all the hard work so you can turn your attention to the more important decisions – like what on earth you are going to write in that love letter.

FOR HER

FOR HIM

1. Lingerie – Can be a tricky one; getting her size wrong is a big no-no. Granny knickers aren’t good for anyone involved but slutty suspenders are a risky choice. Either pay attention when she’s perusing the rails inDebenhams or try a romantic lingerie shopping trip for two. Babydoll, La Senza £25Bra, La Senza £28Knickers, La Senza £16

2. Ah – the sweet scent of a beautiful red rose. What could be more romantic? And erm… pricey. Prepare to be robbed.Red roses in heart box, Interflora £39.99Single rose in vase with chocolates, Interflora £26.95

3. Perfume is always a good choice… slightly impersonal but as long as you choose a sexy scent and not the one her mother wears, you’ll be on to a winner.Georgio Armani – Armani Code 30ml, The Perfume Shop £34.99Jean Paul Gaultier – Classique 50ml, The Perfume Shop £44.99

4. Melted chocolate all over who knows what could happen? Don’t listen to the moans ofdieting; no girl can resist a box of chocolates when it’s waved under her nose.Sweet Lips, Hotel Chocolat £4.25Sealed With A Kiss, Hotel Chocolat £40

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

1. We all love a bit of a surprise when that fly unzips so make it a good one with some fancyundercrackers to embarrass him with.Diesel boxer set of 3, USC £45Scribble print boxers, Topman £6

2. Mmm, the sensual whiff of sweaty pits. Not for you? Then spritz him up with a splash of fragrance.Paco Rabanne 1 Million 50ml, The Perfume Shop £34.99Calvin Klein CK Be 50ml, The Perfume Shop £19.99

3. Is the wine alright, Madam?” Yes, thank you, Mr Sexy Waiter, it is very much alright.Waiter set, Ann Summers £12

Riding solo? Find yourself sobbing into your pillow at the mere thought of a lonely

Valentine’s? Come on now, pull yourself together. You’re an independent (wo)man - who

Steal

But what’s a meal without a fabulous film to pig out to? Get yourself down to Blockbuster and dig out our pick of the best flicks to get you through that lonely night…

For a sob: Bridget Jones’ DiaryThe ultimate romantic comedy. Unlucky in love Bridget finds herself torn between Daniel Cleaver

(player) and Mark Darcy (nice guy), in the embarrassing and highly amusing tale of the thirty-

something singleton’s quest for marriage.

For a Scream: The GrudgeEndure this movie and forever dread a flickering strip light… Set in Japan, the curse of a mur-

derous supernatural force repeatedly passes from victim to victim in a chain of horror. Prepare

for an eerie Japanese child popping up, spooky snatches and… eurgh… that deathly rattling

sound.

For Some action: The TransporterAh – the lovely Jason Statham, here appearing as a highly skilled driver, employed to transport

slightly dubious packages. Working by a strict set of rules, his mantra goes out of the window

when he finds himself as the intended victim of a car bomb and missiles, resulting in him being

left with the ‘package’: a young Chinese woman, in the midst of a people trafficking scheme. Cue

action-filled fights and sweaty muscles.

For a chuckle: American Pie 2Admittedly, this one doesn’t give as much impact without seeing the first instalment but, come on,

who hasn’t seen American Pie? Think walkie talkies, band camp, embarrassing superglue incidents,

Stifler’s mum and Tantric sex. We need say no more.

Curry and a film, all in one

place? Genius. In conjunction with

Blockbuster, Spice and Film on Abbeydale

Road offers a choice of takeaway goodies

including curry, biriyani, tandoori, burgers,

Southern fried chicken, pizza and Ben and

Jerry’s ice cream, as well as a full selection

After the chill-out of Christmas, now comes the hard work – exams, resits and essays. Deadlines are

looming, revision is piling up and the stress of it all can leave you questioning why you bothered with

university in the first place.

Here at The Student we know just how you’re feeling as we’ve been there before: we’ve struggled through

the weeks of exams, felt the mounds of revision notes threatening to squash us and found ourselves

staring at our computer screens at 3am high on caffeine with zero inspiration. But we made it through to

the other side to tell the tale, armed with a degree and ready to face the world.

So we feel ready to give you advice on how to tackle the New Year pressure. Read on and discover how

to cope and above all, DON’T PANIC. Deep breaths and a cup of tea will get you through most things, and

remember exams aren’t the only meaning for your existence – it will all be ok in the end.

Leaving Things Until The Last Minute

The exams are weeks away – no need to start revising yet, you can start tomorrow. It’s your best friend’s

birthday this weekend – no time to revise, you have to go out! Too tired after the gym, you’d better just

go to bed. Oh you’ll just watch this last episode of Friends before you start revision… oh and now this

episode has started… and now it’s too late. What’s that you say? Exam tomorrow?? Help!!

Sounds all too familiar? Putting off work seems always seems a good idea at the time, but when it comes

to the day of reckoning you’ll be regretting that decision

1.Plan your essays – it takes ten minutes and really helps to sort out the essay in your mind and keep to the word

count.

2.Would you be able to fit six months’ worth of lectures into two days? No, so don’t try to revise everything a day

before the exam.

3.Be strict with yourself – yes you might prefer to go out but keep it to a minimum. Just think of all the guilt-free

partying you can embark on once the essay/ exam is over!

STRESSED OUT

Plan Your Time1.Start preparing your revision plan about three weeks before your

exam, depending on how much you need to revise. Working in little bits

here and there is much better than cramming everything into the last week.

2.Write a revision timetable – what you’re going to work on when, what topics you

want to work through – but keep it realistic.3.Include breaks in your revision timetable for social activities, sports and meals, and take

some days/ nights off.

BreaksTaking regular breaks in your revision helps you to relax, take time out to think about other

things and refresh your mind. Little breaks for tea and cookies work a treat, and don’t feel bad

about taking an hour or so out for a trip to the gym or even a night off for some social time.

Hardcoring it through the night is NOT the way to go. An overload of rushed information isn’t

going to stick in your mind, no matter how hard you try to cram it in. Your brain needs time to

digest and retain facts and figures, so going back over things daily helps it to retain all those

highly interesting professor quotes. Little and often is the recipe for successful revision, hence

the need for forward planning.Eating Proper Mealsin the midst of revision or essay writing, healthy eating has a tendency to go out the window. Choco-

late, crisps and hurried slices of toast may taste good but aren’t going to help with squeezing those

last few facts into your memory. Here’s our top brain foods:

1.Water – keeping hydrated helps to keep your body happy and give you energy.

2.Fruit and vegetables – mmm, all those lovely vitamins and minerals will boost your system and make

you feel good.3.Breakfast – there to give you the energy for the day ahead. Forget a full English though – whole-

wheat cereals and brown toast will boost your body with wholesome goodness. If it all gets too much then there’s no need to feel alone – help is hand at

your union, or give Samaritans a call, they’re ready and waiting to listen

and give you some support.Samaritans: 0114 276 7277Sheffield Hallam Union Advice Centre: 0114 225 4148University of Sheffield Union Welfare Officer: 0114 222 8613

At the risk of disappointing those readers who thought this column would be all about the wild bed hoppings of a sex-crazed slutbag, I must first clarify that this is not the Student Karma Sutra. Life as a (sexy) single student in Sheffield gives me plenty to fill this column with, giving you nosey readers an insight into the life of a student girl about town.

My tastes of relationships in the past have not given me much to savour; in a word, mind numbingly boring. The drone and monotony of seeing the same person every single day does nothing for the loving feeling in my opinion. I see my friends still in the same relationship they were in at school and think; “are they honestly happy with that same guy? Or do they just think they are as they’ve not tried anyone else?” A shiver actually runs down my spine when I think of being stuck in a relationship. Urgh.

And for some reason, the kind of guys one finds oneself edging towards the relationship border with are, upset-tingly, always those wet sort of guys who almost stumble over themselves to get to that bridge you’ve just politely asked them to jump off. I’ve tried to be satisfied with this, I really have (as it’s no doubt more sensible) but come ON. Give a girl some excitement. Yawn.

Thus my thirst for stimulation drives me to seek out those members of the male species with a bit of life within them… always providing some light-hearted entertainment for you, Reader, and un-doubtedly resulting in a few casualties along the way. Oops, sorry boys…

BLOGGED

With the hangover from the night before haunting me, somehow I still have the sudden urge to start typing to tell all you nosey students the tall tales I’ve got about the weekend I’ve just endured.

Ringing the “Goonies” (as we call them), we started off in the Common Room; decent. The music wasn’t loud enough (but that’s probably because it was full), the snooker hall was heaving but after taking advantage of three Glitterbombs (Goldshläger and Redbull) for £7.50, I was getting well on the way to one of those nights.

Next: Rise on West Street. Seems to be quieter since they took the double vodka Redbulls off at £3, replacing them with two VK’s for £3.50; still not bad but I wasn’t one to be getting cherry VK spilled all over a white Alex Christopher vest, sticking to the Peroni. After here we ventured over to Bia Hoi, crammed the second I walked in. Losing everyone, I could here the Goonies giggling over the price of the vodka buckets (£5). “Bargain”, I thought at first; until I clocked the amount of ice the bartender was packing into the bucket. Hmm.

We moved on to Alibi on Trippet Lane - never heard of it to be honest but glad I went. It’s defo going to be a regular haunt in my adventures - heaving and I actually knew quite a lot of people in there which surprised me. The massive pints you get for £3.50 looked like a pint and half in one glass, although the music wasn’t the best… they could do with a mellow house DJ cracking out some classics in there.

And so it came time for the club. Stumbling like new born cattle, we “strolled” down to Steel House to see what the deal was. The dance floor looked to be falling like a lead balloon - must have had just ten people on all night, so as you would we left. I carried on the night in Embrace, which I have come to regret - not only was it full of the same goons and locals but the mu-sic was terrible with songs repeated every hour (CD on loop?).

I guarantee from now on I won’t be going out on Fridays; why should I when I can go to Shuffle on Saturday and listen to some decent house and tech?! To top it off I woke up with a massive bruise on my leg - anyone who knows how this hap-pened feel free to contact me…

AN INSIGHT TO THE MINDS OF THE PEOPLE IN THE THICK OF THE TOPICS YOU LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT...

Page 31: The Student // Feb 2011

BLOGGEDAN INSIGHT TO THE MINDS OF THE PEOPLE IN THE THICK OF THE TOPICS YOU LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT...

PHOODLearning how to live on your own is dif-ficult. I suspect staying healthy is the most difficult part of it - and your diet has a massive role in that. At home, I was always cooked for and I think most students can relate to the fact that most of the time there’s no time or no patience to cook elaborate or nutritious meals. I am not the best person to give you advice about food. I am a disaster at cooking and I only like making cupcakes. Which aren’t at all bad, actually.

My attempts to feed myself are pretty pa-thetic. Most of the time I cannot be both-ered to cook properly, so I have beans on toast or a bowl of cereal. Cooking with some one else can be a lot of fun though. I mostly just hover and watch my housemate cook the food we share, hoping to be able to help but not too much because I don’t really know how to do anything and I don’t want the meal to be ruined. So I usually do the washing up - I find this a pretty good deal. Or, you know, you could just live on toast.

I’m sure that’s an acceptable lifestyle, es-pecially during exams. I know it sounds like I’m joking, but never underestimate toast; you can have it with beans, cheese, tuna, tomatoes, ham, and I could go on. How-ever I must say the best thing about this whole food at uni debacle is going back home and being able to truly appreciate your mother’s food. I have never appreci-ated good food so much, no matter what it is.i i

BEAST!

A new year, a new wardrobe. That seems to be a lot of people’s sentiment when the clock strikes midnight yet come January 5th, your bank balance is holding back all those good intentioned resolutions. But don’t despair! A lot of key 2010 looks are clinging on for another season. Those pricey clogs you ‘had to have’, are still hot to trot. The even better news, is that this year’s signature themes are so much fun. 2011 is set to be the year of retrospect. The 50’s and 60’s silhouette will have fully invaded come summer. Think full skirts, cropped jackets and capri pants. Take scissors to spray on jeans when the chill lifts for an instant, affordable wardrobe update. Match with a knotted shirt and pillabox lips for a casual, rockabilly edge to this sophisticated look. The 70s started to creep in last Autumn and the look is set to explode this Spring for both women and men. Flares are the jean cut of choice (perfect with those clogs again), and super wide trousers are to eclipse the all mighty maxi dress. Maxi lovers have no fear, as they are not lost but revamped with sheer fabrics and crochet for a more refined look. Alternatively, for the very brave, go Starsky and Hutch in head-to-toe denim. However, all must be worn with attitude. Think 50s movie stars pounding the streets of Rome and nonchalant hippies. Con-fidence is key in transforming these high fashion looks from dress up to chic. 2011 is not for the half-hearted.

STUDENTSTROLOGY

Although you dislike change, this year will be all about whipping out the surprises and shocking your fellow housemates.Who strutted downstairs in a mankini this morning?

Ah, Pisces. Always the hopeless romantic. 2011 will, unfortunately, see yet more of your woeful soul pining after those you cannot have. Maybe after the fifth rejection you’ll realise that not every-one is after marriage and kids by the time they’re 20.

Oops – someone’s going to be causing some falling outs this year. And that someone is you, Aries. Find a special, quiet place to breathe and calm those angry beans unless you want to find yourself alone on a Saturday night.

You do love a good hug, don’t you Taurus? And who doesn’t? Hugs are to be shared though, remember; this year I don’t want to see you sulking in the corner because you didn’t get one.

Work placement. China. Do it. Ooh Cancer – you always make me feel warm inside. Just keep doing what you do but remember – always wear a little rubber coat.

54

Page 55: The Student // Feb 2011

Essays, deadlines, references, libraries, portfolios – ah, the life of a student. But don’t panic so, Virgo, it will all be alright in the end. I always find keeping a chunky stud muffin hidden in the shelves at the back of Floor 5 helps to relieve some of the tension; maybe I’ll let you borrow him.

Ooh – sneaky, sneaky. 2011 will have you discovering all kinds of secrets, but the interesting part is what to do with your new found knowledge…. Play wisely, Scorpio.

The waters are still, Libra, but there may be tremors on your peaceful lake of tranquillity. And once those ripples appear the culprits had better watch out.

What a burst of radiant sunshine you are, Sagittarius. When the world is gloomy you will be there putting a smile on everyone’s face. Mwah.

Capricorn. We’re all up for a good bit of dosh coming in from that Saturday job but when you’re dropping lectures in order to stack the shelves there’s something a bit odd going on. There is more to life than a chicken soup stock take.

Oh dear, Leo. What’s that I see? A few too many red figures lurking in your bank account? The overdraft is a magical thing, and don’t you know it. I doubt you’ll still be best budies though when you discover you don’t have enough pennies left for a Pot Noodle.

Our top secret treat of the month is Ben & Jerrys ice cream - the perfect cold treat either at the cinema in the delicous mini pots or even at home with the 500ml pots it’s perfect to share or to enjoy yourself.£4.29 at TESCO on West Street.

Love & Other Drugs (15) In cinemas now, student discount available, valid NUS card must beshown for telephone bookings at Cineworld Centertainment call 0871 200 2000.Brilliant film to see with your girlfriends, if you can bear to share Jake Gillenhall with them! Ann Hathaway rocks the role as a temperamental girl whose issues aren’t all her fault, playing the field and surprising a womaniser at his own games, only to beat him and have him fall for her (yeah I know, saw that one coming right...?). Naturally, there are a few hiccups along the way but it’s full of giggles and awkward situations and conversations that we have all been in at some point.

Oh - the usual warning: be prepared to well up a touch somewhere along the way. Boys - classic fourth date film when you’ve decided you actually like this girl, full of gorgeous girls and the kind of film they will love you for taking them to see. Feel-good at its best.

FLICKSTAKE AN INSIGHT INTO THE THOUGHTS OF THE STUDENT MAGAZINECRITICS AS THEY PICK AND PROD TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LATEST RELEASES.

Get ready because the biggestaction packed movie of 2010 is being released onto dvd on the14th ofFebruary, only £14.99 with freedelivery at www.hmv.com

The Next Three Days (12A) In cinemas now, student discount available, valid NUS card must be shown for telephone bookings at Cineworld Centertainment, call 0871 200 2000.

This hard hitting thriller keeps you aching for more, with surprises in constant supply right until the end; this film will have you hanging onto the edge of your seat, dying to know the out-come. Right from the outstanding opening scene this block-buster entices you to stay hooked on the action right through to the closing titles which are a welcome rest from the intensity.A star-studded cast of impeccable actors ensures the roles are believable and, to a certain extent, you can absolutely empathise with them. The original version of this film has its place in film history but lacks what this remake can offer; a huge budget which results in a far more elaborate production.

Meet the Little Fockers (PG-13) In cinemas now, student discount available, valid NUS card must be shown for telephone bookings at Cineworld Centertainment call 0871 200 2000.

Entertaining but yes - a little predictable. Following “Meet the Fockers” and “Meet the Parents”, this film follows in their footsteps

but sadly doesn’t surpass any expectations. Definitely chuckle worthy but its not something that will go down in your ‘films never to be forgotten’ file. However, it is one that will entertain you for the duration of the film, for an evening of sitting down to watch something that doesn’t hurt your head with complicated plot lines, twists and turns, simply just a bit of immature banter passing over you. For that this is definitely the one to pick.

BEATSTHIS IS THE SECTION OF THE MAG THAT GETS YOUR EARS WAGGING WITH OUR 3 LATEST ALBUM REVIEWS AND THE DIRTY DOWNLOADS SECTION FOR ALL THOSE BASS HEAVY RAVERS OUT THERE.

RhiannaLoud

A seemingly unstoppable force in current musical trends; she seems to hit every spot. With a host of top-rate producers at her side for the making of this album, it is not so surprising that the outcome is a strong one, featuring StarGate, Tricky Stewart and Alex da Kid producing a brilliant fusion of pop, R&B and dance. If you like the singles released so far includ-ing, “Only Girl (In the World)” and “What’s My Name”, this record will absolutely feed your appetite for tracks. This confident release has highlights including the fantastic “Love the Way You Lie Part II” with the talented Eminem, and the stun-ning “Skin”, both bringing a power-ful platform for Rhianna’s soulful and commanding voice to shine through, in a driven way to show-case her talents. Collaborations include those with Drake and Nicki Minaj, which whilst complementing Ri Ri’s voice, the 23 year old seems to rise above them both.

Cee Lo GreenLadykiller

This amazing album is an instalment from a talented and intelligent man. Developed to appeal to the widest possible audience, the album sadly eludes his hip hop vibes in order to produce something more radio friendly, which Cee Lo hopes will assist him to reach the ‘megastar-dom’ he so obviously deserves. This concept simply whets my appetite for previous and future albums which may revert back to his previous hip hop routes, perhaps enticing those people who would normally shy away from hip hop into his world. A lot of these tracks are insanely upbeat and perfect for beating those January and Valentine’s blues, smile at a random person and maybe even have a little boogie on your way to wher-ever you might be headed.

Track to watch out for :Track 9 - Cry Baby

Available at www.hmv.comPrice : £5.99 free UK delivery

Ellie GouldingBright Lights

One of the biggest and most well known emerging stars from 2010, Ellie Goulding burst onto the scene in a flow of girly pop music, which continues to move fluidly through this album. Unfortunately, I am not a pop princess at heart which means that I was sadly disappointed by this album due to perhaps unreal-istic expectations. If toe tapping and at times heart wrenching, tear jerking and occasionally, power grabbing pure pop is your idea of a chart topping album, this is definitely the one for you. I, how-ever, expect something a little more unusual and interesting, perhaps unwisely. With over 300,000 sales of this album so far, I guess this might well be simply my point of view, depending on your personal tastes and what you are hoping for, you might as well give it a go, if that kind of thing floats your boat.

Track to watch out for :Track 8 - Your Biggest Mistake

who was your inspiration to start dj’ing? My main inspiration for djing is Micky Slim. He played in Sheffield at DQ ‘Super-Charged’ when I was working for ‘Charged’ and that was it. He just has so much energy and puts a lot of effort into his sets and that’s what I enjoyed most. His set was just nuts and had everyone going crazy. I enjoy watching djs as well as listening to them. It is all about entertaining and interacting with the crowd whilst you play in my opinion. My main inspirations for production these days are Stupid Fresh, ZubaGroove, Little Bastard, Nom De Strip, Seb Leger, The Dutch Rudder, Eigo and Supermarket DJ’s and Beataucue...

when and where was your favourite DJ set?I can’t pick a favourite gig ‘cause all gigs are special to me in different ways, but my most memorable gigs are, warming up for Micky Slim at Sunday Sessions, playing with the Squatters & Heavyfeet at Nocturnal, playing with Foamo at the Harley, warming up for Krafty Kuts and Plug, DQ ‘Krooked’ in January 2010, Tramlines 2010 and of course the numerous house parties...Pictured right with Dj legend Micky Slim

what is your favourite crowd pleasing floorfiller?I have a few different tunes for different occasions. You can never really plan a set, ‘cause if you go into a set with big heavy tunes and it is dead then it wont work, If you go into a club with a chilled out set and it is rammed then you gotta flip it around. ‘Escobar and Vito-Who’s the Badman?’ is a banger that is always played from when I first started ‘til this day.

if you could take any item with you on a desert island what would it be?My laptop and can I take can of Irn Bru as well please?

if you could mate with any human being who would it be?It would definetely have to be Jessica Alba

when are you next playing?I am next playing at ‘One Love’ in Rotherham on the 12th of Febru-ary, Mission at Leeds on the 21st of February and M-Code, Sheffield on the 26th of February. Check my Facebook and Twitter for dates and releases.

Drum and bass madmen pump up the volume and make the bass as heavy as possible in the follow up to their 2008 debut ‘More Than Alot’. With this album more mainstream than the last, it won’t be long ‘til they are topping the charts with a huge host of chart regulars to add to the symphony of sound including Plan B, Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal & Cee Lo Green. Make sure you look out for the classy British bulldog artwork for the album cover and you’ll be in for a winner.
