The Iron Dome

Defining TrendsDefining Trends

• The Iron Dome missile-defense system demonstrated its first operational

successes by neutralizing eight rockets from the Gaza Strip between 7-9 April

2011.

• The Iron Dome forms the innermost portion of a comprehensive, multi-tiered

missile defense network.

•The system will provide protection against medium- and long-range missiles.

•Though the Iron Dome has the potential to provide significant levels of security

for civilians living in southern Israel, it will not provide hermetic protection against

missile fire.

•Rocket and mortar fire remains a part of daily life in southern Israel and recent

escalations in terrorist activity by Hamas and other terrorist groups in the Gaza

Strip endanger the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Israeli considers the current situation of indiscriminate rocket fire untenable and

retains the right and obligation to protect its citizens.

The Gaza Strip

On 7 April 2011, a member of a Hamas terrorist cell fired an anti-tank missile at a yellow

school bus.

The bus was driving its regular route and was clearly painted yellow to indicate its civilian

function.

The terrorist used a laser-guided Kornet anti-tank missile to target the bus with the

deliberate intent to harm civilians

Fortunately, tens of children were dropped off at a previous bus stop in Nachal Oz just

minutes before, averting a far more deadly attack. The driver was injured and the lone

passenger- a 16-year-old boy named Daniel Viflic – was critically wounded.

The West Bank

Palestinian riots, most of which were violent, continued during the time of this report on a

daily basis (over 33 major cases were noted, including two instances in which rioters threw

Molotov cocktails).

Arms, ammunition, and army equipment were confiscated by IDF forces or handed over

by PA forces on at least 4 occasions, including a 58 kg of ammunition, an IED detonator and

electrical wires, a pistol, and 200 ‘M-16’ bullets.

Terrorist attacks continue in the West Bank. During the period 1 April – 15 April, three

attacks occurred: in two separate incidents shots were fired at Israeli civilian vehicles, and 11

IEDs and an explosive device were discovered by Israeli security personnel.

Palestinian Security Force operations in the West Bank continue but their scope and quality

must be increased. When necessary, the IDF takes actions to prevent terrorist attacks from

being carried out.
