Virtually unseen since the theatrical premiere in 1953, FEAR AND DESIRE was the ambitious first feature film by the legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. An existential war film often compared with the director’s Paths of Glory (1957) and Full Metal Jacket (1987), FEAR AND DESIRE follows a squad of soldiers who have crash-landed behind enemy lines and must work their way downriver to rejoin their unit. In the process, they encounter a peasant girl (Virginia Leith) and bind her to tree, where she is tormented by a mentally unbalanced soldier (future director Paul Mazursky). Before making their escape, the soldiers determine the location of an enemy

base and formulate a plot to assassinate its commanding officer.

Edward G. Robinson stars as Wilson, a government agent who tracks down a high-ranking Nazi officer (Welles) who has managed to craft a new identity for himself in a quaint Connecticut town, marrying the daughter (Loretta Young) of a local judge. Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist returns in a dazzling new restoration supervised by the director and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro! One of the enduring masterpieces of the 1970s, Bertolucci’s breakthrough film The Conformist is an elegant portrait of the

death throes of Italian Fascism and a triumph of pure style. Adapted by Bertolucci (an Oscar-nominated screenplay) from Alberto Moravia’s 1951 novel, it chronicles the life of

secret police functionary Marcello Clerici (Jean-Louis Trintignant), who is sent on a mission to assassinate his former teacher, Professor Quadri (Enzo Tarascio), a leftist

activist in exile in Paris. Clerici uses his honeymoon with new wife Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli) as a cover for the job. But he soon becomes entranced by Quadri’s sensuous, haunted wife Anna (Dominique Sanda), and the Fascist tenets he once accepted without

question begin to waver in his mind.

Genoa, 1943. Grimaldi is a swindler, pretending to be a colonel in the Italian army to get money from the family of people put into jail by the Nazis. Once caught, the Gestapo

makes a deal with him : he will stay alive if he impersonates the General Della Rovere, a leader of the Resistance who has just been shot by the Nazis, to be put into a political

jail where he is supposed to identify another Resistance leader.

The setting for Conversation Piece is a handsome old Roman palazzo owned by a Professor (Burt Lancaster), an aging, American-born, Roman bred art historian who devotes his life to his books, his paintings, and his stereo recordings of Mozart. His

life is turned upside down when his house and his intellectual life is invaded by a rich, pushy, overdressed marquesa, played by Silvana Mangano, the wife of a Fascist

industrialist, and her teen-age daughter (Claudia Marsani), her young German lover (Helmut Berger) and her daughter’s lover (Stefano Patrizi). These four characters are

able to persuade the Professor to lease them his upstairs apartment for a year and what unfolds is a truly revealing exploration of the idle rich, their kinky side, and what the

stuffy old professor can learn from them.

In Northern Italy, WWI has turned into a bloody stalemate. Bogged down in their trenches on a barren highland, the men of an Italian infantry division have been given

Based largely on real people and actual events, Fernando Di Leo’s action- packed film – the final part of his Milieu Trilogy – is his boldest commentary on corruption and the criminal

underworld. A bomb attack in a cinema in Palermo kills all the members of one mafia family except for Cocchi. Realizing that the instigator of the bomb attack is Daniello from another mafia family, Cocchi is determined to revenge. Lanzetta, a hired killer employed by Daniello is told to assassinate the rival family. Following Lanzetta’s successful hit he finds himself in

the midst of the ensuing gangland war, with Daniello attempting to turn him into the police, his boss’ daughter kidnapped, and the rival gang looking for revenge.

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION

The second film in Fernando Di Leo’s Milieu Trilogy focuses on Luca Carnali, a small-time mobster and pimp who has been set up by his gangland boss. When a shipment of heroin

disappears between Italy and New York, Carnali is framed for the theft. Carnali is pursued through Milan by a pair of merciless American hit men – played by Henry Silva and Woody Strode,

and referenced by Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction (1994) – whom mistakenly believe that he has stolen a drugs shipment. Following the murder of his wife, the hunted becomes the hunter as

Carnali takes his revenge on his boss, the hit men and anyone else who stands in his way.

Dominic Malacarne is a corrupt police officer, who is able to earn much money doing business with the mob. One day, seeing his corrupters exaggerate, he decides to change his position and

he starts to hinder them, as a consequence of it, they kill his girlfriend. Malacarne declares war on crime, but he finds himself victim of an attack.
