Transcript of The Story of Essential Leadership Communication
I’m going to tell you a story
... THE story
Of why I do what I do
WEDNESDAY
5 O’CLOCK P.M.
8 JANUARY
I’m finishing up my
working day
I’m a Senior Lecturer
I’m a Senior Lecturer

and Professional Purposes

and Professional Purposes
My phone rings
It’s my boss
He’s Got Some Bad news
Some very Bad news
Someone Had made a BIG mistake
My Professional communication seminar group
Executive Presentation Skills
For the next morning
Had been accidentally mixed
With native English speakers ...
And second-language English speakers!
It’s a
TOTAL Mess!
What would you
do if you were
me?
CANCEL IT, RIGHT?
Too late for that!
THURSDAY
9 O’CLOCK A.M.
9 JANUARY
It was a very grey London morning
As I walked
To
THAT
seminar
So we do the intros
And I ask the 1st question
What do you find difficult about presentations?
*
An Italian executive answers
first
I always go blank and forget what I’m going to say
*
Me too! That’s my problem as well.
*
Says an English
executive
And me!
*
Interjects a Brazilian executive
I said
It can’t
be the same. Second-
language English speakers have vocabulary and grammar
gaps, but native speakers don’t
By the way, I’m a Linguist

Honours degree from University of London
And I know what I’m talking about
By the way, I’m a Linguist
But they’re ALL
convinced it’s the same
problem
Sounds a lot like the
same problem!
* (They insisted!)
And when we started the role play practice tasks
And their performance stress kicked in
To MY astonishment
The native-English speakers
And the second-language English speakers
ALL had the
same problem!
Feel Stressed
Feel Stressed
BLANK MIND
RACING MIND
But why?
It took some serious study
to find this out
Clear your mind
Picture a
Did you see something like this...
We often look in the
wrong place
For the right answers
The French have an idiom for this
Esprit de l’escalier
It’s all about our biology
The heart produces 50 times more electromagnetic energy...
... than the brain
Your heart is your body’s power source
And what happens when you get stressed?

This overloads your brain
The problem is with accessing knowledge
The problem is with accessing knowledge when stress overloads your brain
My mind was blown
My career as a communication trainer was completely redirected
It was a EUREKA moment!
Think about most intelligent, educated second-language English speaking executives.
Years and
years of
English study
At school
Or college
Or university
How can their professional communication problems ...
Be about a knowledge gap in grammar or vocabulary?
After
ALL
THOSE
YEARS of English study!
Communication fails,
because of the communicator’s
anxiety
Great communication
is art
IT HAS
GOLDEN RULES
Important Objectives
It requires craftsmanship
Which everyone must study, learn and practice
To become a true master
Which is why we established
To offer you
ssential eadership ommunication
