Five composers. One pianist. Five brand new works for piano, all inspired by a groundbreaking piece fromfifty years ago - Mikrophonie by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

    The Project

The Stockhausen Response Project will create five innovative pieces for solo piano, by asking five incredibleyoung composers to respond to one historic piece: Mikrophonie by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Hey, everyone. I'm Brianna Matzke, a pianist from Cincinnati, Ohio, and I am coordinating The StockhausenResponse Project. When we are fully funded, The Stockhausen Response Project will present to the worldfive brand new, never-before-heard, and absolutely groundbreaking pieces of piano music. In Spring of 2015I will host a premiere party in Cincinnati, complete with appetizers, a custom-tailored cocktail, and openingmusic provided by Cincinnati musician ADM.

The creation of new music and the support of young artists and musicians is vitally important. TheStockhausen Response Project is ready to give the world something noticeable and exciting, somethingthat will make people sit up and think, and something that will open their minds to new possibilities.

    FAQ

Who is Stockhausen and what is Mikrophonie I all about?

Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) was one of the most influential and controversial composers of the20th century, best-known for his work in electronic music, aleatory, serial composition, and musicalspatialization. More information on Stockhausen is available here and here. Mikrophonie I, although itwas premiered fifty years ago in 1964, still presents audiences with ideas that stretch the boundaries ofmusical thought and conception. A performance of Mikrophonie I involves six players usingmicrophones, electronic filters, and assorted percussive objects to create a symphony of sounds fromone tamtam (essentially a big metal gong). Stockhausen conceived of the piece playfully, and carriedthat conception to the utmost degree, designing his own electronic equipment and his own notationsystem. Hearing Mikrophonie can be mystifying, fascinating, engaging, and alienating all at one. Awonderful performance may be viewed in its entirety here, and more information on the piece isavailable here.

What is it about Mikrophonie I that merits a response?

Mikrophonie was groundbreaking in its time because it combined acoustic and electronic sounds in alive performance format. Previous to Mikrophonie, composers created either fully acoustic pieces orpre-recorded electronic tape pieces. The combination of both methods in one piece opened up anentirely new world of possibilities for Stockhausen's contemporaries and for future generations ofcomposers.

Mikrophonie utilizes a singular instrument played by six players to create a novel, strange, andcomplex world of sounds. By asking each composer to respond to this piece for piano, I hope to bringthat complex and exciting sound world to the keyboard.

    The Composers

Each composer brings a unique perspective to the project. You can read more about them atwww.theresponseproject.org.

Dylan Sheridan (Tasmania, Australia) has studied in Tasmania and Cincinnati. Dylan is interested inexpanding the theatrical nature of concert music through the use of image, lighting, musical sculptureand unconventional use of space.Danny Clay (San Francisco) grew up in Ohio, and has completed degrees in Cincinnati and SanFrancisco. His works draw upon elements of American primitive, art education, children's theater, genealogy, improvisation, digital media, and everything in between.Molly Joyce (New York City) is a Juilliard-educated composer originally from Pittsburgh. We met at aCCM-hosted new music workshop. Her music often employs electronics, and has been described aswritten in an emotionally appealing twenty-first century style (Fanfare Magazine), and vibrant, inventive music that communicates straight from the heart (Prufrocks Dilemma).Paul Schuette (Cincinnati) holds a doctoral degree in composition from CCM. In the concert hall, hismusic enhances live performers' potential with live electronics. His influences range from theoreticalphysics to the visual arts, and his music often incorporates unique computer software, handmadeelectronics, and video. Ty Niemeyer (Cincinnati) has studied composition with Joel Hoffman, Douglas Knehans, and MichaelFiday, and percussion with members of the Percussion Group Cincinnati (Jim Culley, Russell Burge,Allen Otte). Often exploring delicate timbres and sparse textures, Ty writes music concerned withfinding a spirituality for the 21st century.
