Fire ban breached to kill huge nest of bumblebees

By Emma-Jane McLennanFIREFIGHTERS WERE called to a different kind of a blaze this week – an Avonhead man breaching the fire ban trying to get rid of a troublesome bumblebee nest.

Neighbours were concerned the householder’s chil-dren’s playhouse was on fire – and with the dry condi-tions feared it could spread.

There is a fire ban across the city because of the tin-der dry conditions.

When firefighters arrived they found the playhouse was fine, but a large nest of bees on fire.

Harewood fire station officer Brian Lewis said the man, who had recently arrived from South Africa, had initially called an apiarist for help.

But the apiarist wouldn’t assist, so the South African man did some quick online research and found smok-ing bees out might get rid of them.

He lifted the 2m x 2m playhouse off the ground, tipped it onto its side and lit the bumblebee nest which had been under it. •Turn to page 3

THAT’S ODDRARE AND ancient coins worth more than £1 million have been found buried in a bucket under a farmer’s field.

The collection of more than 5000 Anglo Saxon coins is thought to be more than 1000 years old – a find described as being of “national impor-tance”.

Pete Welch, leader of the Weekend Wanderers Detect-ing Club, which organised the amateur dig near Aylesbury, Berkshire, said the coins were in “superb condition”.

He added: “They’re like mirrors: no scratching, and buried really carefully in a lead container.

“It looks like only two people have handled these coins: the person who made them and the person who buried them.”

More than 100 people turned up to take part in the dig and were stunned when the coins were found 60cm underground.

Supermarket celebrates50 yearsSUPERVALUE WILL reach a milestone this year - 50 years in business.

The chain’s very first store was opened in Opawa in 1965 and the company now has 41 stores around the country.

As part of the birthday celebra-tions, customers will be given the chance to win one of five gift cards loaded with $5000.

General manager Mark Bros-nan said the 60s were a turning point for supermarkets in New Zealand.

“It was revolutionary at the time to have people move away from the traditional style of pick-ing your weekly groceries from many outlets to a one stop shop, and it just took off from there.”

He said over the last 50 years consumer tastes and preferences had changed and SuperValue had adapted to cater to that.

The chain’s name was originally spelled as SuperValu but com-plaints from customers resulted in adding the ‘e’ on the end, he said.

“Our stores have been backed by our local, loyal customers over the years and we want to

say thank you by celebrating this milestone with them.”

The ‘Celebrate and Win’ com-petition will run from Monday until February 1.

Customers will be given the chance to win one of the gift cards when they spend $20 or more by filling out an entry form.

Winners will be drawn on Feb-ruary 14.

SUMMER SAVINGS IN STORE!

WORK ON three key central city transport projects for Colombo St, Lichfield St and Tuam St – in-cluding a section of Manchester St – will get underway on Mon-day.

The changes are intended to improve traffic flow and provide better access for cyclists and pe-destrians.

City council transport and re-search unit manager Richard Os-borne said contractors would be starting work at the central sec-tion of Tuam St, from Durham St eastwards, progressively convert-ing it to a one-way, east-bound route through as far as Barbadoes St.

The work connects to the ear-lier one-way, east-bound con-version of Tuam St beginning at Hospital corner which began in late November.

“Tuam St effectively replaces Oxford Tce and Lichfield St as the direct route into the central city and is also an efficient route for buses getting into the new Bus Interchange when it opens in the winter,” Mr Osborne said.

“Work is also underway to convert Lichfield St between Co-lombo St and Manchester St to two-way. This change supports the one-way conversion of Tuam St by Lichfield St becoming the main access route for new retail precinct parking.”

Once this work is completed, northern buses coming into the city will also be able to use Li-

chfield St as a direct route from Manchester St into the new northern Bus Interchange access.

Tuam St and Lichfield St will remain open to traffic while the work progresses but will be nar-rowed to allow heavy vehicles to move around the work site.

Work on Colombo St will en-able it to be converted into a 30km/h slow speed zone as part of a separate project later in the year. There will be separated ‘Copenhagen-style’ cycle lanes on both sides of Colombo St be-tween St Asaph St and Lichfield st.

All of the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Progress in the health precinct is also expected this year with the Crown having recently released a request for tender for the pur-chase of a property at 36-44 Ox-ford Tce.

The property sits within the south frame which includes the health precinct and was bought by the Crown after an approach by the owners.

Central City Development Unit director Warwick Isaacs said those wishing to purchase the site would need to outline how their proposed development would meet the intentions for the health precinct and suit the de-sign guidelines for the area.

The request for tender, which closes on February 16, can be viewed at www.gets.govt.nz

HOUSING REBUILD and repair delays are likely to cost taxpayers millions of dollars as an accommo-dation grants service has been ex-tended for another seven months.

The move is welcomed by many but is a direct reflection of con-struction times being extended, an Insurance Council of New Zealand spokesman, Samson Samasoni, says.

“Inevitably some rebuild and repair timelines are being pushed out, in some cases by as much as 15 to 20 weeks, largely because en-gineers and builders are having to deal with complicated land repair situations.”

Mr Samasoni said that there are currently over 1600 over-cap re-builds and repairs under construc-tion, 1200 under contract or con-senting and 4600 in the pricing or design phase still coming through the construction pipeline.

“Insurers are still confident that

the vast majority of residential claims will be fully completed by the end of 2016 but there will be a number that will trickle over into 2017.”

He said they would be mostly multi-units or newly over cap cas-es being transferred from EQC to insurers, as well as some currently going through the court process.

The Canterbury Earthquake Temporary Accommodation Ser-vice was set up to help people whose insurance money for ac-commodation runs out during an extended rebuild.

It gives grants of between $180 (for a one person household) and $330 (three person household) per week so people can stay in approved accommodation while their house is being fixed.

Since the programme started it has helped almost 3000 house-holds, with 2000 now off the pro-gramme and the remaining 733 (55 in the red zone and 678 in the green zone) still being helped.

To date more than $46 million has been paid to homeowners through the TAA.

It was set up on February 18, 2011, and cost $46 million up to December 16, or an average $807,018 per month.

If it continues at this rate, the ex-tension will cost around $5.6 mil-lion.

Social Development Minister Anne Tolley announced the exten-sion of the TAA last month, which will see its finish change from March-October this year.

“This programme has made a real difference for those still strug-gling in the aftermath of the earth-quakes,” she said, adding that she will review the programme around the middle of the year.

GreyPower New Zealand presi-dent Terry King said it is a “tre-mendous” thing the service has been extended.

“It has shown a very human ap-proach to a very sensitive issue.”

Slow rebuild costs taxpayers

•From page 1“Naturally the neighbours called us

when they saw the smoke, especially at this time of year, “ said Mr Lewis.

There were “thousands” of bum-blebees swarming all over the play-house: “There was also a tree close by and it was just covered.”

Realising that the bumblebees were more of a concern than the

fire, Mr Lewis called the fire com-munications team and asked them to find someone who could help.

Within minutes apiarist Kevin Gates arrived.

The self-described “bee hobby-ist” has been at the job for more than 25 years, but he was shocked by what he saw.

“He had three kids riding around

on new Christmas bikes, all with no shoes on, and the oldest would’ve been lucky if he was five years old. They are lucky they didn’t get stung. I don’t know where he got the idea to smoke them out,” he said.

Mr Gates said the best way to deal with bees was to either leave them until winter, when the queen bee dies, or try scooping them into

a box and rehoming them.“In the end I had to tell them to

spray the remaining bees with bug spray, which is pretty sad. They just liked the spot because it was warm and dry so it was a perfect place to build their nest.”

Between the Fire Service and the apiarist the problem was sorted- the fire was put out and the family

given advice on dealing with the remaining bees.

Mr Lewis said they would not be referring the householder to the city council for breaching the fire ban, the fire was not big enough to warrant action. No fines are given for breaching fire bans in urban areas, while rural areas charge the cost of the callout.

Our People

Nathan Bonner splits his time between brewing coffee in the central city – and making people laugh. Aka MulletMan, he is one of the acts in the World Buskers Festival which starts next week. He spoke to Grace Cabell

So can you tell me a bit about yourself, how long have you been busking – what made you get into it?

I’ve been busking since 1995. I used to work in a juggling shop so I sort of went outside of that with juggling props trying to get people to pur-chase the wares. That was in Auck-land a long time ago. Then I moved to Christchurch to do the Circo Arts course in 1998 and have been here since. I live in Birdlings Flat.

You’ve been performing for a while now, what is it that keeps you in the game?

Yeah, I suppose! The busking is one side of it. Primarily, I do book work, festival work and cruise ship work – the busking side of it is a non-paid crowd so it keeps the show fresh.

How do you and your Mulletman persona compare?

He’s a highlighted version of part of me, so he’s not a character, he’s a highlight of a persona.

What is it that made you keep the 1980s mullet out there?

I guess I’m quite a practical person

and it is quite a practical haircut. It keeps you warm in winter and keeps the hair out your eyes. So in terms of pragmatism it’s awesome.

Has anyone ever tried to pull your hair?

Yeah! Most people ask permission but I only say yes if their hands are clean. I have been trying to get my haircut insured. At the moment it’s sponsored by Janine Jansen.

What sort of conditioner do you use?

Moroccan oil.Do you have a family? I have my partner, Elizabeth. We

have no children but I also have a 14-year-old daughter who lives in Auckland.

Had the mullet helped or hin-dered you? [Laughs] No, the mul-lets a good filter. Funnily enough she [Elizabeth] hadn’t even seen the show before.

If you weren’t performing what job would you choose to do instead?

Well my partner and I took over the Caffeine Laboratory in Re:Start Mall – that was just a side project,

but it’s ended up taking up a lot more time than I thought. We have re-named it A Mouse Called Bean.

It looks like you’ve travelled to some pretty cool places – do you

have a favourite place you have per-formed at so far?

I like the Edinburgh Fringe Fes-tival – I’ve performed there seven different years. It’s a cool city and at-

tracts heaps of different acts. Apart from the couple of winter festivals in New Zealand it’s pretty quiet. Both my brothers live in the UK so I like to visit them as well.

effect on the world stageDo you get recognised when

you’re not performing, as Mullet-Man?

All the time. It’s just constant, eve-rywhere I go. The funny ones are when you go overseas and get rec-ognised by someone from Australia who has seen you in Queenstown, Auckland, Edinburgh and now in Australia.

What does a typical show involve for those who might not know?

It’s usually music and juggling routines with comedy and a unicycle. For my finale, I like to have a young lady blowing a leaf blower on my hair.

What’s something from the show you always get a big reaction on?

When most people talk about my show they talk about my haircut, re-ally [laughs].

Do you think busking in Christchurch has changed post quakes?

Yeah, it’s definitely changed. This summer is an exception because the mall (Re:Start) shut down the pitch (designated area for performers). Prior to the quake the street show had developed an international pitch in the Square – so post-quake its been a case of trying to keep that cul-ture going.

Where did you learn your skills?  I’m self-taught. I used to do jug-

gling festivals and attended circus school. Also through meeting people and exchanging ideas at the different festivals around the world. That’s one of the reasons I love the Edinburgh

Fringe Festival, you meet so many in-teresting people.

How do you come up with new material?

New material you think of your-self in terms of concept, then I like to throw at someone who thinks along the same lines and see what comes out of it.

Do you busk all year round? More or less all year round. I’m

definitely busier performing with the cruise ships.

How many hours a week would you dedicate to shows and training all up?

It does vary – and also probably just like you – you get ideas in the middle of night so it’s I couldn’t re-ally say.

Is this your full-time profession? It’s been my sole income for over a

decade. We have the espresso bar as a side project but it’s turned out to be quite a time-consuming thing.

How much money can a suc-cessful full- time busker expect to make?

[Laughs] Dream on!What do you do when you’re not

busking?When I’m not performing? Or

busking? Or working in the shop? Or being a dad? No, I do enjoy the odd game of golf when I can get out and do it. Other than that I get to travel with work so enjoy getting out and seeing new things.

Is it difficult working with audi-ence members?

When you’re using audience mem-

bers you have to be so careful. They essentially become a representation of their audience – how you treat them is how you treat everyone. For me it’s about creating a scenario where they feel safe enough to do something in front of people they wouldn’t normally otherwise do, and then leave the stage feeling good about it. What I love is when you set up a situation for someone and they go above and beyond what they could have done.

How do you pick someone out of a crowd?

You pick people who look comfortable with themselves, you learn how to read people pretty quick.

What would you say to people who want to avoid being picked?

Come with the spirit that you want to be involved rather than not be involved. Good acts will always try and make people feel good when they leave and not completely humiliated.

What can we expect at the up-coming Christchurch festival?

I’m putting together more audi-ence-interaction stuff. This is my 11th year so I think most people know my routines so they’ll just be extended versions.

I saw a question posted up on your website and had to ask you yourself to see what your answer would be: What came first? Was it the mullet or the man?

The mullet came first, the man grew into it.

EXCITEMENT: Christchurch busker MulletMan includes a mix of juggling, fire and music into his performances.

Sport Suzie will be appearing in a multitude of places including the Popsicle Kids Pitch and street shows around the park.

Fez Shivannah will be part of the Buskers Burlesque line-up.

Captain Kidd will be returning again with his mischievous and naughty ways.

Nathan Bonner aka MulletMan

Hula Queen has toured for the last 10 years and has performed as acrobat and MC for Circus Oz.

The English Gents will be joining the Buskers Burlesque team.

Flowers are a gardener’s joy, and inject colour and fragrance into any garden. There are many varieties of fl owers available from your local garden centre in diff erent shapes, sizes and colours that you can grow in traditional gardens, or in pots and containers to brighten up decks or courtyards. Some varieties can also be planted in your vegetable garden to help attract bees and other benefi cial insects to aid pollination.

Red Back gardening gloves from Omni Products (www.omniproducts.co.nz)

I was given a pohutukawa plant several years ago as a gift and it has been growing well in a pot and is about half a metre tall. I would like to know when would be a good time to plant it in the garden? I am a little concerned about how well it will survive during the

Christchurch winters!

The cold Christchurch winters will impact the success of growing a Pohutukawa tree, as they are a northern North Island coastal

plant. But if you are determined, you will need to protect it from frost for at least the fi rst 3-5 years of the tree’s life, until it grows above the frost line. However even then a severe frost could kill it.It may be advisable to keep growing it as a large pot plant so it can be moved in and away from areas of frost each winter. Plant it in a decent sized container, and use a good quality container mix. Pohutakawa have low nutrient requirements and therefore do not require frequent fertilising. As another option, you may want to consider growing a closely related cousin of the Pohutukawa, called the Southern Rata (Metrosideros umbellate) in your garden, as it is more suited to the cooler climate. The Rata has lovely dark green, glossy leaves with brilliant red fl owers (similar to the Pohutukawa). They typically fl ower from November to January (depending on location). You can see these trees resplendent on the Omihi Hills of North Canterbury and along the hills of the West Coast. PRODUCTS TO TRY: Daltons Premium Tub Mix. HugenativeselectionOpen Every Day

I’D LIKE to tell you about my cur-rent worst pet peeve. It tops loud rock music, the laughable “journalism” found on BuzzFeed (17 Snowmen Who Have Absolutely No Chill), and even people stepping on the back of my jandals while I’m walking.

It’s also one of the most over-used, overdone things of the past 12 months:

Selfies. As a (still, just) teenage girl, my

life is plagued by the things. My Facebook news feed has been invaded by photos of pouting, big-eyed beings that only slightly resemble what my friends actu-ally look like.

Selfie taking appears to go

hand-in-hand with bucket loads of make-up, colour-changing filters and screeds of cast-off pics on the way to “the one.”

At first I tried to laugh off the trend. “It’ll pass” I thought, barely holding in a smile as I watched groups and indi-viduals pouting, simpering and ruffling their hair in a bid for the perfect selfie. It

usually involves opening your eyes really wide, a lot of lipstick (for the girls) and a forehead-wrinkling-eyebrows combo (for the guys).

It’s success is usually measured by “likes” on Facebook, so you need to get a lot of those. Comments like: “You’re so hawt ex oh” should be responded to with “No u are” and “Look in the mirror bby.”

I originally thought it was far too funny to take seriously, but soon found that I was, indeed, wrong.

Selfies are serious business.Kim Kardashian knows this. And so

does Emerson College, in the United Kingdom. It now offers a course on “self portraiture”. Truly.

I was perusing boxing day sales in Queenstown recently, looking for a new phone, when a sales assistant helpfully offered: “If you buy this one, it comes with a free selfie stick.”

Ahh, the notorious 2014 Christmas present had struck again. I smiled.

“Ah, I don’t think I need one of those. But thanks.” A few hours later I spotted a tourist using her selfie stick to capture herself with The Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu in the background. It was windy, and her hair was blowing in her face but she only had one hand free while she desperately tried to get the right angle with the other.

Smile. Click, click. She’d frown at the screen and take another. Click. I almost felt like offering to just take the photo for her, but she looked determined. I left her to it.

At the end of the day, it’s not the vain, frivolous and attention-seeking back-ground to bathroom mirror-type selfies that puts me off. It’s not even that I have better things to do.

The reason I avoid those arms-out-stretched photos is purely from a safety point of view.

As someone smart once said: “Stop editing ya’ll pics. What if you go miss-ing? How do you expect us to find you if you look like Beyonce on Facebook and Chewbacca in person?

•Send me your selfies and they could be printed with my column next week! Emma-Jane McLennan, [email protected]

Braised lamb shoulder chops with vinegar and french beans

Serves 6

650g French beans, 450g for the braise and a further 200g for blanching4 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil1.35kgs Lamb shoulder chops50g Onions, chopped2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped1 Ground pepper8 Tbsp Red wine vinegar

Snap the ends off the beans, rinse, drain and set aside. In a cast-iron enamel pot, add olive oil and brown the (seasoned) lamb chops at a medium-high temperature. Brown meat in batches thoroughly on all sides before removing. Avoid overcrowding the pot. When the lamb is finished, put the onion and garlic in the pot and cook until they are pale gold. Add salt and pepper then the vinegar. Bring the vinegar to a brisk simmer for about 30 seconds while using a wooden spoon to de-glaze. Turn the heat down, add beans then place the meat on top, along with extra salt and pepper. Cover and cook in oven at 160C for about two and a half hours or until the meat is almost falling off the bone. Gently remove the chops to a tray to cool. Sieve the beans, keeping the stock. Reduce the stock until it becomes almost sticky. Add red-wine vinegar for piquancy. Chop stewed beans and mix with fresh, blanched butter beans and French beans. Serve with buttery boiled new season potatoes and the fresh and chopped beans. Drizzle the chops with the reduced sauce and add a spoonful of minted salsa verde to the top of the lamb.

Heat pumps are one of the most popular forms of home heating - with the added benefit of providing air conditioning during the hotter summer months.

They are also easy to use, and provide instant heating or cooling and can be programmed to come on at a pre-set time.

As home heating systems they work by taking heat from the air outside your home and using to warm the air inside. In Summer heat pumps can be used in reverse, like a refrigerator, to transfer unwanted heat from inside a home and dump it outside, creating a comfortable cool indoor environment.

Another great summer advantage of a heat pump is its ability to clean or condition the air inside your home, removing dust, pollen and other sources of allergies.

There are many makes and models of heat pumps on the market and not all will be right for your particular circumstances. The best way to make sure you get the right system for your needs is to do your homework and discuss your needs and the options available with a reputable supplier and installer.

A breath of fresh air: Why home ventilation is

so importantGood ventilation is essential to the health of

you, your family and your home, and can even make heating a home easier and cheaper. However, many New Zealand homes are poorly ventilated: a survey by Building Research Australia and New Zealand (BRANZ) found that many were damp and inadequately ventilated.

Your home needs to be ventilated in order to allow the exchange of stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. Ventilation also reduces the build up of pollutants, moisture, and odours.

Unhealthy chemicals from plastics, sprays, cleaning materials and other sources can accumulate in poorly ventilated homes, which can cause health problems such as asthma. However, a well-ventilated home is not the same as a draughty house -ventilation is about controlling when and how much air is moving between the inside and outside.

Neither is poor ventilation just a problem for older homes, a new home that is well sealed to keep in heat can easily suffer the effects of poor ventilation.

In summer when we want to cool our homes it is better to open windows and vents on higher levels to let warm air escape.

Active ventilation requires the use of fans or forced air systems to drive air through and out of the home and to move warm air to cooler parts of the house.

Local ventilation is used to quickly move large amounts of wet or polluted air out of the house, such as extractor fans in moist areas like bathroom sand laundries, or range hoods in kitchens.

Show Homes - the ultimate way to shop aroundIn Christchurch and the surrounding rural districts we are blessed

with an extensive array of very good quality show homes.

Building companies build show homes to demonstrate their workmanship, display innovative design ideas and present a snapshot into a new and luxurious lifestyle featuring all the latest in materials, fittings and fixtures.

A show home can inspire you in a way nothing else can. You can absorb the ambiance they present, admire the innovative techniques, new materials and technology all in one place, under a roof that you may just select for your new home.

At a show home you can ask questions, take notes and compare them to other builders’ presentations. You don’t have to visualise or imagine full scale from a photo in a glossy, you can simply

see at a glance, often instinctively, features you like, things you would avoid and clever innovation that you never would have thought of.

Best of all you will see the building companies’ attention to detail, from design, construction and finish through to interior decor, outdoor living and landscaping.

Show homes are the perfect way to get a good idea of pricing, discover what is good quality and value, learn about superior use of space, future-proofing, ongoing maintenance and long term returns. So what are you waiting for? Check out our maps, grab a notepad and pencil and begin the exciting project of building your own home.

IT MUST be my age catch-ing up with me, but I’ve found it hard to accept that 21 years have passed since Kia New Zealand first landed the Sportage.

As part of its celebra-tions Kia has upgraded and expanded the Sportage range here to eight variants.

Put simply, there is an extra two-wheel-drive model and an extra four-wheel-drive model, the range starts at $32,240 and ends at $54,490. The test car was the new 4x2 Urban Limited and it lists at $44,490.

Interestingly, the new Sportage isn’t sourced from South Korea; like many Asian manufacturers, Kia is turning to Europe to expand its manufacturing capacity and the Urban Ltd arrives here from Slovakia. That aside, build quality and standard of manufac-ture is high and dovetails the Kia products that land here from South Korea.

There are two engines in the Sportage range, a new 2-litre petrol unit which was fitted to the 4x2 Ltd and the R-Series 2-litre die-sel, which Kia shares with partner Hyundai.

In both cases the engine is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Kia rates the petrol engine at 122kW (6200rpm) with 205Nm of torque available at 4000rpm, down consid-erably from the previous generation petrol engine which was peakiing at 4600rpm.

These outputs are up with the modern standard and in the Sportage’s case translate to healthy perfor-mance. Against the clock it will make a standstill to 100km/h time of 10sec and will post a 7.1sec time to make 120km/h from 80km/h.

The petrol engine is quiet and willing and interacts well with the transmission. At city speeds the Sportage is relaxed under the bonnet, yet offers significant feel and response beneath the accelerator. Kia has adopted the global trend towards fuel efficient engines and the new petrol unit is state-of-the-art in terms of how it uses fuel.

Kia gives it an 8.4-litre

per 100km (34mpg) com-bined cycle rating, that along with a similar figure during my time with the test car is more than satis-factory for a mid-size SUV.

Incidentally, the Sportage in this form will also sip fuel at the rate of 7l/100km (40mpg) at 100km/h with the engine turning over slowly at just 2200rpm.

Interestingly, a switchable activeEco mode which has been engineered into the diesel models to encourage greater fuel efficiency, isn’t fitted to the petrol model.

Kia has been careful not to tinker with the concept of Sportage. It is still the capable, refined mid-size SUV that has served the global market well. At almost 4.5m it is family-friendly, with adequate room in the rear for three adults with head, leg and shoulder room.

In Limited form, it is well specced with leather (heated seats up front), satellite navigation, rear view reversing camera, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, and even hill descent control which is a rare inclusion on a car which doesn’t have four-wheel-drive.

And for safety there’s a host of passive and active elements which earn it a five-star ANCAP rating.

I took the test car on a

route that epitomised a traditional journey a fam-ily would make, bearing in mind that I only travelled on sealed roads.

On the twists and turns of Christchurch Akaroa Rd, it steers with strong turn-in and strong directional accuracy, it is also devoid of lurch when a change of direction is made quickly. The Limited Sportage gets what Kia label Flexsteer. It is a three-mode driver-selectable function which firms or eases steering wheel load. Personally, I like sport mode but normal or comfort for city driving does make a lighter feel for when frequent steering wheel effort is required.

Because it is sourced from the Northern Hemisphere, the Sportage in this form gets Hungarian-made Hankook tyres (235/55 x 18in), they provide high grip and encourage spirited handling.

The Sportage gets a fully independent suspension set-up with spring and damper rates firmed for gravitational arrest, absorp-tion off-road and high comfort levels.

And that is a criteria that Kia rates highly as a manufacturing ingredient, the Sportage exudes a feel-ing of control from behind the wheel which, in turn, is directed through the cabin.

An acquaintance I know has a Sportage from the previous generation and it is a vehicle that is highly regarded within the fam-ily, it has done quite a few kilometres now but it has been trouble-free and hasn’t taxed the family budget in terms of fuel and operating costs.

I expect the latest model will fulfil similar patterns, it is a vehicle that will surely boost the growing aware-ness of Kia as a brand in this country.

SportBirthday a chance for Parker to reflect• From page 20For now, as he marks another year gone, Parker can’t believe how far he’s already come.

“I didn’t think I’d be in this situation at this young age - I thought it would take longer. I’m just blessed to have a good team around me who want nothing but the best for me.

“If I put it down to a word, it’s humbling.

“It’s a humbling feeling knowing that I’m able to inspire and motivate young kids. It’s a humbling feeling, everyone ask-ing me for photos and autographs.

“I’m still trying to get used to it. I never thought - when I was young - about fame. All I was thinking about was do-ing well in boxing, and trying to look after my parents.”

Parker knows he can’t afford to take his foot off the gas.

“If you go into a fight that peo-ple think that you should win and you lose, it sets your career back maybe 12 to 18 months.

“That’s why I take every fight seriously. Any opponent, it doesn’t matter who they are - champion, not a champion, what-ever - my full focus is on getting fitter than them, learning more than them, just being stronger than them.”

In April, he’s off to Austria to spar with world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko,

who made his pro debut when Parker was just four years

old.He said getting to test himself

against the best is great, but first, he needs a win in March.

“If I lose to this guy, the champ will smash me.”

Effort pays offD I L I G E N C E has always been a trait that I’ve desired.

“Careful and persistent work or effort,” as it says in the dictionary, has never been a strength of mine.

I’m careful enough and persis-tent enough - my job demands it - but never to the extent where I feel I’m giving it my all, all of the time.

You might say that’s why I write about sport, rather than playing to any significant level.

It’s a trait that has been on my mind of late, because of one man who does - Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara.

During the Boxing Day test at Hagley Oval, our paths crossed on several occasions.

I would be heading for lunch, which was served in the Canter-bury Horticultural Society build-ing out the back of the new pavil-ion, and he would be heading for the practice nets.

This happened on day two, after he was dismissed cheaply in the morning session; on day three, while his teammates were battling hard in their second innings, after

he fell cheaply once again; and on day four, with his side all out twice and the match nearly lost.

It was the last one that im-pressed me the most. At that point, it would have very easy for him to have cast his woes in Christchurch aside and already be looking forward to the second test in Wellington. Practice could wait until they arrived at the Ba-sin Reserve, couldn’t it?

But no, he was headed out back with a coach, eager to complete more throw-downs, even though he was due to take the field for the Black Caps’ chase within half an hour.

That’s a kind of dedication I can only aspire to.

I suppose that’s why his test re-cord is so impressive.

Sangakkara is one of those play-ers where you know he’s great, but you forget - or just don’t realise - exactly how great.

A test average of 58.66, second only to Donald Bradman’s 99.94, which approaches 70 when he’s

not also wick-etkeeping, as he hasn’t done since 2009.

Thirty-eight hundreds, ten of them doubles

- again, second only to Bradman. And 12,203 runs, the fifth most

by anyone, ever, 203 of which came in one go in Wellington ear-lier this week, as he appeared to have rescued his side from a mas-sive hole and put them on track for a victory.

Of course, it wasn’t to be, as Kane Williamson, perhaps the most diligent of the New Zea-landers, scored his own double century, and with the help of BJ Watling, turned the game right around. Their efforts during their eight-hour, 365-run stand were as persistent as they come.

Sangakkara’s individual turna-round, bouncing back from the test at Hagley Oval, where he failed to score 10 runs across two innings for only the third time ever, is still worth celebrating.

He’s not far away from retiring, and he could have easily rested on his many laurels.

But he didn’t, and that’s some-thing to be admired.

Joseph Parker

Birthday time for Parker to reflectBy Andrew Voerman

HEAVYWEIGHT BOXER Joseph Parker turns 23 today, but any cel-ebrations will have to be subdued.

He’s set to spend most of the day in the air, on his way to Las Vegas for a training camp ahead of his next fight, against American Jason Pettaway in Auckland on March 5.

In Christchurch for a fleeting promo visit ahead of the camp, he joked that maybe there was an ul-terior motive.

“Maybe my team wanted to send me back early so I don’t gather with all my friends on my birthday and y’know, get up to no good.”

The March bout is the first of five Parker hopes to have this year and he says he would love for one of them to be in Christchurch, the home town of his trainer Kevin Barry.

“When I come down here with (the Barrys) I get treated like I’m family,” he said.

“I think bringing a fight down here to Christchurch would be awesome. I think we’ve got to start fighting around New Zealand, just

to give back to everyone who can’t make it up to the fights, because they’ve been showing their sup-port and they just can’t make it up.”

Parker has been doing his own training since knocking out Irineu Beato Costa Jr in Hamilton in ear-ly December, but says he can’t wait to link back up with Barry.

“I’d rather go to someone like Kevin who’s experienced and who pushes you, teaches you the right things, and also you have someone watching you.

“Sometimes when you’re train-ing by yourself, it’s a little hard - sometimes you can’t be honest and it’s a bit hard - but to have someone like Kevin by your side, it makes it a lot better and a lot more fun.”

The pair first joined forces in 2013, and Parker said he has come a long way since.

“Our first fight that we worked together for was (Francois) Botha, and from that fight, everyone saw the change from the fight before and I put it down to just being fo-cused, no distractions, putting 100 per cent in training and feeling ready for the fight.

“It’s been a big change since I started working with Kevin and we’re still seeing changes now. We’re slowly improving with each fight that we go into.”

“Imagine the next two years,” he said.

“If I keep training with Kevin and if I keep giving everything 100 per cent, then who knows what kind of fighter I could be in two years?”
