A Tale of Two Crosses

The two large crosses in the chancel area during Lent and Easter have an interesting story to tell:

In August of 1963 Pastor Robert Hooker came to Epiphany from a church in Wookstock, Illinois bringing us the concept of the two crosses. From a photograph and a sketch of the “Living Cross” as it had been made by his church choir in Wood-stock, Altar Guild members assisted by Epiphany men devised a “Rugged Cross” for Lent 1964 using the 1963 Christmas tree. The Christmas tree symbolizes the birth of Christ and its transformation into a cross reminds us of Christ’s death. The purple drape speaks of royalty - Christ the King. The crown of thorns symbolizes Christ’s suffering, humiliation, and death.

Similarly, the 1964 Christmas tree was fashioned into a cross which became our first “Living Cross” for Easter 1965. This cross was wrapped in chicken wire and stuffed with moss. It is soaked in water for several days. Flowers and greenery are added by Altar Guild members. Our “Living Cross” re-minds us of Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection. The white lilies symbolize Christ’s purity, His resur-rection, and His promise of hope and eternal life.

Easter 2016 will mark the 51st anniversary of our “Living Cross” which is a focal point in the chancel area on Easter morning. Members of Altar Guild use ap-proximately 150 lily heads, several bunches of baby’s breath, and bundles of leather leaf to assemble the display. The generous donations of Epiphany mem-bers and friends have made it possible to carry on this tradition for fifty years.

Altar Guild has willing hearts and hands but needs monetary support for our efforts. If you can make a donation to help purchase supplies for the cross this year, please use a pew envelope and mark it LIVING CROSS.

THANK YOU! -- Epiphany Altar Guild

Body and Soul

Wednesdays in Lent at Epiphany: March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5 Come one, come all, bring a neighbor, bring a friend on any or all of the Wednesdays listed above to be fed both body and soul. Our Epiphany Café features two home-made soups (changing weekly), a salad bar, breads, drinks, and desserts to feed the body (and allows you to not have to cook or prepare something for lunch or dinner.) Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. Supper is from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The café is self-service. Just bring your appetites and choose what you would like to to eat and drink. For our worship experience, and to feed our souls, together we will experience “Reflections on the Cross” through the use of poetry, theatre excerpts, art and sculpture, music, and writings of theologians. This will change weekly. We will begin each Worship Service with communal prayer, some relaxation, and a song of inclusion, with children on instruments. From there we will be inspired by each week’s presentation by members of Epiphany. Children will be dismissed to make a cross craft in the chapel as the remaining group take some reflec-tive moments as they light a candle at the cross. We will conclude our worship with the Lord’s Prayer.

Some information and answers to frequently asked questions: Worship takes place in Epiphany Center.

Epiphany Café is in the gym with the food line in the kitchen.

The length of the worship experience is 30 minutes. The lunch café begins immediately upon conclusion of the 11:00 a.m. worship service.

The evening café is available from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. You, your family and friends may come at any time within that time frame. This is meant to be a community experience, so please feel free to invite neighbors and friends to join us! We especially encourage children to join us as we have some activities for them during the worship experience. Take a mid-week break on Wednesdays this Lenten season, and feed your body and soul.

“Dealing With Life” continues! We have shared stories of actual high school experiences, now we’ll look more closely at the particu-lar stresses and pressures that many teens are facing. I am using chapters from Dale Erlander’s Tales of the Pointless People to help connect our various discussions with our baptismal identity as peo-ple of God.

Care Corner is a new outreach program that has been designed to assist those in our church

family or community who, due to personal circumstances such as loss or health issues may be

in need of help with anything from prayers to home repairs. Care Corner has begun with sign

up sheets in Epiphany Center for the Sutherlands and Pastor Moser. If you are able to help in

any of the numerous areas listed, please don’t hesitate to sign up! Efforts are underway to al-

low sign-up capabilities at EpiphanyElmhurst.org/Care-Corner. We will update this outreach

effort with new families or individuals as needs arise. If you have any questions or ideas for

new ways to help, please contact Amy Wilson at [email protected] or (312)

On Monday, January 30, we served ninety-four guests at Grace Café! Grace Cafe has expanded over the last few years and now includes thirteen Elmhurst churches offering a free meal every other Monday from the end of August till the beginning of June. Twenty meals will be provid-ed in the 2016-17 Grace Cafe season. For this event we hosted a summer bbq in January, serving pulled pork (generously donated and prepared by Jon Elsass), baked beans, macaroni & cheese, deviled eggs and cole slaw. Guests were served an assortment of cookies, bars and brownies for dessert and sent home with their choice of fresh fruit and granola bars in a "Grace to Go" bag. Epiphany members pitched in by donating food, setting up tables, working the kitchen, serving guests, and cleaning up. More than thirty members contributed food and another thirty-five volunteered at the event. Volunteers got a free meal too! Thanks to everyone who participated! Andrea and Mark Redfearn

Poultry Project Pictures and Status Recently, Pastor David Zijjan updated his Facebook account with pictures of the Poultry House that Epiphany helped support with donations of $18,000 last Spring. An additional $2,000 was sent to FDLM due to a considerable donation in December and other donations in 2016. Thank you, Epiphany!

Note the metal roof and second floor. With the arrival of metal mesh and more wood, the Poultry House construction will be completed. When stocked, it will house up to 10,000 hens, 10,000 chicks & yield thousands of eggs.

Once fully in production, the Poultry Project will: Provide FDLM consistent income through the sale of chickens and eggs

Give orphans, caregivers and community nutritional high protein meals Assist FDLM orphan costs for medical care and school tuitions

Create jobs for adults & daily tasks for children impacting the dependence syndrome A Courageous Deed Performed by Pastor Zijjan While looking at the pictures of the Poultry Project, the following posting was noticed on Pas-tor Zijjan's FaceBook blog. It takes a love of Christ and one's fellow man to risk making such a public statement in a country like Uganda. Please pray for David, his family and congregation and the people of Uganda.

The following is a letter of appeal from Pastor David Zijjan. The content is graphic, but we felt it was important to share.

"Pastor David L Zijjan was feeling sad.

February 1 at 1:53pm ·

I appeal to the leadership of this nation, right from the president- His Excellence Yoweri Kaguta Muse-veni of the National Resistance Movement government. It is gut-wrenching to watch the gruesome images from the accident scene at Lugazi on the 1st Feb 2017, where a commuter bus rammed into a heavy truck killing all 16 on board the taxi. It's unforgivable, that in this 21st century, with our govern-ment that has been in power for now 31 years, that police can arrive at an accident scene and lack the necessary equipment to cut mangled bodies out! And that it would require the use of rudimentary tools such as axes to cut through the chasis of a commuter bus with bare hands. We have had experi-ences where fire trucks turn up to fight fires with empty tanks because they run out of water, or did not do the due diligence to ensure filling the tanks before leaving station. We have heard of scenarios where the police fail to respond to incidents for lack of fuel, with at one time the IGP appealing to the public to raise fuel for the police force. Ugandans continue to die miserable deaths of bleeding to death in hospitals as a result of accidents because the nurses on duty are overwhelmed by the patient- medical personnel ratio. My next door neighbor bled to death as we helplessly looked at the emergen-cy section of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital at 3:00 a.m. because for starters, there was no doctor on duty, the nurse on duty was exhausted after receiving several cases from an accident who also died on arrival for lack of attention, there were no gloves for the nurse to handle the bloodied victims, and we bed our youthful, enterprising brother farewell. Your Excellence, there is now talk that parliament needs a chopper for convenience as our deserving speaker traverses to execute her constitutional du-ties. The nation is abuzz with outrage emanating from the "golden handshake." As we think about such necessities on top, we must as well think about the ordinary Ugandan, your voter who bleeds to death, who dies for lack of blood in hospitals. There is no reason why we can't have an efficient air ambulance provision. There is no reason why police can't have tools to cut through a wreckage to rescue Ugandan citizens trapped, there is no reason why Jinja Regional Referral Hospital can have a fully fledged Inten-sive care unit, yet lack personnel to man it, yet there are Ugandans who earn up to 40 million shillings a month in salaries! There is no justifiable reason why hospital morgues and mortuaries can't have func-tioning fridges but have decomposing Ugandans rot and get eaten by flies while their loved ones, the bereaved look at such dehumanizing and demeaning horrors. I appeal to the leadership of this Pearl of Africa, to prioritize an overhaul of social amenities, and to equip our forces with capability for real time response. This is not a political rant. I am a frustrated Ugandan who has seen services elsewhere, and believe Uganda deserves them too. I thank you.

Zijjan David Livingstone Father's Divine Love Ministries"

FDLM (www.dignityforafrica.org) in Jinja, Uganda, is an orphanage led by Pastor David Livingstone Zijjan and his wife Sarah. We are proud to support this ministry focusing on children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Epiph-any Outreach teams have visited FDLM twice. David and Sarah have visited Epiphany on a number of occasions.

"Each of the tiny flickering lights represented the des-perate prayers of someone who had reached the end of their own ability to bring about change. . . . And if she were to light one, what would be her prayer?" Raised by missionary parents, Poppy is summoned to London by her suffragette aunt. Within days she catches the eye of a WWI veteran, attends a jazz club, works as an in-vestigative reporter, and is hunted by a peer of the realm. The dwarf, the Shakespearean donkey, the in-sane asylum, and the car accident all work into God's plan for Fiona Smith's heroine. The Jazz Files: Poppy Denby Investigates is a complex historical novel full of adventure and generational intrigue. Thank you to all of the Sunday School children for asking for help from your parents to fill up the shelves at the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry. You were asked to collect personal care items, items used to care for pets, and laundry and cleaning products. These are the items that people in need have a difficult time paying for.

I am so PROUD of all of you! Collected were 111 personal care items: toothbrushes and tooth-paste, mouthwash, shampoo and conditioner, and bar soap. You brought in 48 pet care prod-ucts: large bags of dry dog food, cans of wet dog food, dog biscuits /chews/ treats, cans of cat food, bags of cat treats and a can of goldfish food. During the last week, you donated 27 laun-dry and cleaning products, including large plastic bottles of laundry soap and boxes of fabric softener sheets.

There were also many other items that I did not name, like a human hairbrush, rope-style flossers for dogs’ teeth, and dish soap. All of the donations will be delivered to the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry at the Yorkfield Presbyterian Church parking lot on York Street near Butterfield Road in Elmhurst.

Congratulations, kids! You did a great job!
