The senior girls took this game, and all the practices leading up to it very seriously. Things got heated on the sidelines on the senior side due to some bad calls they thought the referees had made; but that did not stop them. Moving past the obstacles that were set in front of them, they fought hard, and never moved their eyes off the prize. The senior team left everything on the field that night, and played a game that each girl, and coach will remember. Overall, there were no major injuries that occurred on the field that Saturday evening and the night was a total success. The refs that called the game were Houston Christian’s very own Coach Moore, and Coach Mellor of the HC Varsity Football Team. The girls thought they made some questionable calls, but nothing to cost anyone the game. The lovely voices everyone could hear announcing the game were senior boys John Rasplicka and Jacob Farris. The music and technical expertise for the evening was Kai Mosvold. All of the guys did a great job of adding something extra to the Powder Puff game. Last, but certainly not least, we have the Senior Cheerleaders that showed off their skills on the track and field that lovely Saturday evening. There is one day out of the year that always seems to get HC students all worked up. POWDERPUFF GAME DAY! The juniors face the seniors and duke it out on the field to play the not so traditional game of Powder Puff. This year’s game took place on April 6, on the football field. It was a brutal and hardcore competition.

Houston Christian’s powder puff games may seem slightly different than your “typical” sporting event. We go hard, to say the least. The flag portion of a powder puff game seems to disappear and the tackle aspect of real football seems to come alive. Despite the girly girls that prance out onto the field, when the clock starts, the smiles go away and everyone’s game face comes out. Everyone’s anger and rage seem to intensify as the game goes on, and the polite smiles and small talk grow very scarce. This day, one could say, brings out the Junior, Senior rivalry of everyone.

Coaching the once optimistic juniors, were students Cody Reeter, John Clarke, Ryan Hooker, Carson Taff, Sam Ott, Max Morris, and Hamilton Paret. The coaching staff did a

great job of covering all the important bases, and teaching the junior girls the jist of the game.

Both the offense and defense of the junior girls team were strong, just not quite strong enough. Some of their best players, and strong suits out on the field were junior girls, Madison Sheehy, Jennifer Johnson, Emma Hennessey, Savannah Head, Jackie Bruegging, and Katherine Radney. These girls put up a good fight and gave it their all. Next year, the victory will land in their hands.

Now, for the highlight of the game, the senior girls. The senior girls took an amazing victory and left the scoreboard with a 40-6 win. The coaches that made everything possible consisted of the extremely talented senior football players, Stephen Consoli, Chambers Swiggart, Alex Roys, Jordan Watkins, Keith Crawford, Matt Yochum, Josh Keith, and Ernie Mercado. Each coach brought new and helpful information to practice and gave great advice to the team.

With some additional coaches, this same group coached an amazing powder puff game last year when they were juniors.

Last year the girls may not have “officially” won, but they did play an outstanding game. This year, with just a little more practice, the senior team was unstoppable. The girls had an amazing defense, and a fantastic offense.

Some of the senior star players on both defense and offense were Ashton Binkley, Alyssa McKenzie, Sarah Helm, Miranda Rogers, Paige Hobbs, Courtney Smith, Blakely Smith, Veronica Cecil, and Tayler Hedgepeth.

Sporting the somewhat small cheer uniforms were senior boys, Karl Stuewer, Adam Dole, and Gavin Vanderhider. They did some special tricks and the fans could just not take their eyes off of them.

VATICAN CITY Students pose for a picture outside of St. Peter’s Basilica. This was one of the many sites they saw on the trip to Italy.

Shopping and sight-seeing was not the only thing that the group did in Florence. They also visited the

Leonardo da Vinici museum, traveled to see the ever famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, enjoyed some Tuscan cooking, and also visted the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River that runs through the city.

Students and teachers also

Over Spring Break, Mrs. Cathy Doxtater, a few teachers, and students flew to Italy for an eight-city trip of a lifetime. The group left the Thursday before Spring Break for a ten hour flight to Germany and then a connecting flight to Venice. In Venice, the group participated in glass-blowing, a gondola ride, saw Dodge’s Palace, took a city tour, and made carnival masks. It was only a short stop in Venice as they traveled by bus to Florence. Florence is a rather rustic, old-timey city, so the team took advantage of a tour of the city. In addition to this, the group went shopping, or “bargaining” as junior Carson Taff11 called it, in the markets and also visited the Duomo. The Duomo, as it is often called, is the main cathedral in Florence and can be seen from very far away; its actual name is the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and was started in 1926.

in 79 A.D. Of course they saw the ruins of the partially buried city, but they weren’t led through the ruins by just a tour guide. They were lead by a guide dog who took a big liking to the group. The guide dog watched over them and according to Mrs. Doxtater, “desperately wanted affection, not food.”

As they travelled to the Isle of Capri and many other spots in Italy, students and teachers took their last stop in Rome. This was Carson Taff’s favorite part of the trip because he got to see the Colosseum. “It was my favorite part because that’s where sports were started, and I really like sports,” said Carson enthusiastically. Not only did they visit many sights around Rome such as this magnificent one, but they also got the opportunity to bike around Rome.

Finally it was time to go home, and the students did not have an easy trip back. In fact, their flight got delayed in Germany, so they had to stay overnight in the airport, which resulted in a whopping four connecting flights to take back to Houston.

All in all, sophomore Karina Arnold10 said that despite the end of the trip, “it was fun because I became really close friends with everyone on the trip.” If you missed out on the Italy trip, you can always hit up the HC Italy Trip Facebook page to see pictures and stories of the visit to Italy.

On Friday, March 22, the student body gathered in the chapel for an assembly that is much unlike any other throughout the year. We often come together to hear a speaker, or watch fellow students get honored with accolades like NHS or All-State recognition in athletics. But, this assembly is different. In this one, we come together to recognize students who probably do not want any recognition at all; we recognize them for their selflessness. On the other side of it, we get to witness some of our classmates giving up their confidence and their security, their very own hair for those who have none. This is unlike any other assembly because it is all about sacrifice and service. The first part of the assembly was Locks of Love. This non-profit charity was started in December

1997, and has since had donors and recipients from all fifty states and Canada. This year, we had nine donors from HC including a few who had their hair cut beforehand. Senior Kelsey DeBerry12 donated her hair for the first time, saying, “I decided to do it pretty late because I realized I had enough hair, and it would be pretty selfish of me to keep it when there is someone who has none. Knowing that I could make a difference in someone’s life is what convinced me to do it.” In the other half of the assembly, we took time to recognize those people who acted selflessly by serving others with nothing expected in return. Several students were recognized, with a few being recognized multiple times. Recognitions included Karl Stuewer12 for devoting every morning to making sure the morning announcements run smoothly, a group of freshman students for giving up their Saturday to help Ms. Armstrong move, Mrs. Gladys Dixon for her everyday heroics, and many others. One unsuspecting recipient was Jordan Watkins12, who assisted a school employee in jumping her car late after school one day. Jordan said, “To be honest, I was kind of zoned out when they called my name. I was really surprised because I didn’t know anybody knew about what I’d done.” Great job to everyone who was recognized, and thank you for acting so selflessly with your actions as well as your hair.

Prom is just around the corner and once again the rush is on to find a date (which always

presents many challenges). Houston Christian boys have a pretty good record of asking girls to dances, but do you feel like all the creative ways are taken? Well then, here a few suggestions to ask that special

someone to prom. Here are some basic tips for asking a girl to prom.1) Boys, you can never go wrong with flowers. If you add flowers to any simple idea it makes it just that much more special.

2) Make it specific to the girl you are asking. For example, if she is obsessed with a specific animal: include a stuffed version of that animal.

3) Make it spontaneous! Do not tell her when or how you are asking her (this is specific to girls with boyfriends.) Make it a complete surprise.

4) Get involved with her friends. Ask her friends where and when you should ask her. If her friends help, it takes a lot of pressure off of you, and it will show that you made an effort to make it special.

5) Make it original. Do not copy what people from year’s past have done. HINT: if you play a One Direction video on the announcements, you are copying people from year’s past. Come up with something new!

As for those of you who have not come up with a specific way to ask, here are some possible ideas that might help you ask your dream date to prom.

1) Scavenger Hunt: Although this may have been done before, it is so easy to create a fun new twist. Include her favorite restaurant or her favorite place to shop. This will show that you thought about what she likes and you took time and effort to plan it.

2) Make it big with a sign. One of the cutest ways is to decorate a huge sign asking her to prom. Put it on her car, in her room (with her parents permission), where she practices (volleyball court, basketball gym, etc…), or in a classroom. This is a fun way to ask a girl as long as she does not mind having all eyes on her.

3) Gifts: if you place a rose (candy, stuffed animal, or note) on her desk for every class period she will have something to look forward to all day. Have her teachers get involved and give her something in every class. This is a fun way to ask her at school. It requires minimal effort for you, but it still shows lots of effort and thoughtfulness.

4) Make it funny. If you place a giant boulder with the word “NO” on it and a tiny pebble with the word “Yes” and have your date carry her answer to school the next day. A charming invitation like this will get her attention and she surely won’t have the “strength” to say no.

5) Decorate her room. If you include really cute decorations this invitation will not be a bust. Include balloons, photos, candy, and streamers to make it cute. Do not forget to pop out and surprise her though.

Over all asking a date can be pretty stressful; however, if you ask in a cute way, girls are highly unlikely to say no. Good luck to you in all of your date finding adventures.

The happiest 5K on the planet comes to Houston

Pink, purple, blue, orange, and yellow color powder overwhelms the streets of downtown

Five, Four, Three, Two, One, COLOR. Downtown Houston was covered in different colored powder on Sunday, March 24, 2013 as The Color Run came to town. The Color run is a 5K that is known around the world because of the color powder that is thrown at the runners as they compete in the race. The Color Run, also known as the ‘happiest 5K on the planet’ was a complete success this year as they are midway into their tour around the USA. If this is your first time hearing about The Color Run (hard to believe from the abundance of Instagram pictures), you may think the race is only about being covered in color powder. Of course that is extremely fun, but there is more to the race than that. The Color Run celebrates healthiness, happiness, giving back to the community, and individuality. The Color Run promotes healthy living and over 60% of the Color Runners have not competed in a 5K before. The Color Run gets national recognition and is a great way to get people to participate in something that is not only enjoyable, but is also great exercise. The Color Run

also promotes happiness because, well, it is called ‘the happiest 5K on the planet.’ The Color Run strives to bring family and friends together in an uplifting and happy environment not just for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of others as each race donates money to an organization that is grounded in that specific city. In Houston, the money was given to an organization that supports people who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Lastly, The Color Run promotes individuality. With the race not being time oriented, there is no reason to compete with the runners around you. You are also encouraged to come in tutus, crazy hair, socks, and anything else that shows off your personality. The concept of people throwing color at you may still be puzzling to some. So how exactly does it work? First you go to the pre-race day party at a location in the race city. At that party you have a chance to buy merchandise, but more importantly, you are given your color run shirt that you wear during the race, two tattoos, a sweatband, and a packet of color. There you are informed of the two rules of the race:

wear a white shirt at the starting line and finish covered in color. Pretty sweet rules, huh? But, what exactly is the “color” that is being thrown? “The color is a special ‘elf made’ recipe of magical color dust,” the Color Run website informs. The color does not hurt when it is thrown at you and does not contain anything that will poison you if you were to open your mouth at the color stations. Many students participated in The Color Run and were all extremely pleased with their experience. Senior Miranda Rogers explains, “the color would not come off of my arms and armpits. I guess I was so excited that I threw my hands in the air (like I just didn’t care) and the volunteers shot the color powder right at my arm pits.” Rest assured that even though it may take a few scrubs, the color comes off of skin and out of your hair completely, but who would want to ruin the masterpiece? Sophomore Kristin Milton was smart enough and wore goggles during the race to avoid color in her eyes. She thought, “wearing goggles made me look a little dorky, but I didn’t have to rub my eyes too much from the color

Each year in April, Old Town Spring hosts the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival. It lasts for three weekends. There is crawfish to be eaten (70 tons of it, to be exact) and live music to be heard. With all of the amazing food, and fun things to do the festival is a great place to meet fellow crawfish lovers, as there will be hundreds of people there to dive into this abundance of delectable seafood.

This year the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival will celebrate its 27th year of serving the community food and entertainment. The two weekends that the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival will be open in 2013 are April 19-21 and April 26-28. The Texas Crawfish and Music

Festival is one of the largest crawfish festivals in the Southern region of the United States. There is live music on three separate stages, involving genres ranging from country to zydeco to indie rock. There are also carnival rides, midway games, and educational opportunities for the kids and the kids-at-heart. The Texas Crawfish and Music Festival benefits the Spring Preservation League organization, a non-profit foundation which is dedicated to the preservation and beautification of Old Town Spring, community projects and maintains contributions to a variety of service organizations. For the duration of the festival, it is open on Fridays from 6 p.m. to

12 a.m., Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are a total of $10 each. Children ages 12 and under get in for free when accompanied by an adult. Active members of the military are also allowed in for free.

The lineup for the 2013 Texas Crawfish and Music Festival features acts such as Jack Ingram, Theresa Andersson, Brant Croucher, and many more. There will be more than 50 bands in total. See the full music lineup, including dates, times and stages, for the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival on their website (www.texascrawfishfestival.com). So, get some friends and pick a day to come out and eat your weight in crawfish at the Old Town Springs festival this year!

getting in them.” Of course the color powder will not hurt your eyes, but it is better to be safe than sorry. The Color Run is also known for their loud, crowded, and colorful party at the end of the race. All of the runners flock to the stage where a DJ was mixing the best songs and after the countdown, everyone opened their color packets and threw the powder in the air all at once creating a huge cloud of colors. In, senior, Alyssa McKinzie’s opinion, “the post race party was one of my favorite parts of the race. My friends and I opened up our color packets and threw some in the air, but we mostly threw them at each other.” To everyone’s surprise, a unicorn was in attendance. Wait, what? Yes, a unicorn. What is better than a unicorn and color throwing? Maybe a unicorn throwing color powder, but regardless, the Houston Color Run was definitely a success.

This festival is not just about the music

The StangCommunity 5South by Southwest Concert is big hit

Every year around Spring Break, eventful concerts and festivals take place all over Texas. One concert and festival that seems to never disappoint is known as SXSW (South by Southwest).

In 2013, the festival took place on March 8-17th. The festival surprised all of its fans with famous artists, outstanding films, inspiring music, and interactive activities. The only thing that would stop someone from wanting to attend the SXSW Festival would be the extremely pricey tickets. SXSW tickets run in the high hundreds, and people buy them months in advanced.

What better place to have a huge music and film festival than Houston, TX?

Austin, TX. In the heart of downtown Austin, everyone’s Spring Break revolves around these eventful weeks. This years concert lineup consisted of the famous names such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Deadmau5 & Richie Hawtin, Paramore, Snoop Dog, Paper Lions, Less than Jake, Third Eye Blind, Death Grips, Talib Kweli, Hunters, Jonathan Toubin, and many more!

Senior, Charlie Zenker12, said “I know this year the line-up was very good and the enormity of this years venue and artists was incredible. And it’s not only a concert venue it is also huge for stand up comedy and art shows.”

Along with the fun concerts, SXSW comes up with many different themes for each event. Some of the fun,

interactive themes are as follow: The Art of Science Meet Up, Art, Activism, and Augmented Reality, Brainstorming Technology First, Breaking the mold, ConnectiCity, Fun & Games, Poetry in Motion, Story is the World Force, Networks & Freedom, Come as you are, Modern & Cool, New Technology for Conflict Prevention, and many more.

With sponsors like Monster Energy, Miller Light, Yahoo!, Pepsi, Doritos, The Chronicle, AT&T, Chevy, Esurance, American Airlines, and Free Credit Score.com, there is no way that this film and music festival could not be successful!

Go check out this awesome festival and see for yourself what you think.

New fun is springing up all over the Houston ZooBaby animals are filling up the Houston Zoo

It feels like the Houston Zoo is growing everyday. More and more new born animals are being born at the Houston Zoo. All kinds of animals are being born too, varying from small, little turtles all the way to big, long giraffes. Freshman, Justin McCormack went to the zoo with his family over spring and got to see some of these newborn animals. He said, “it is really cool to see how animals treat the babies compared to humans.” This giraffes name is Lulu, and she was delivered at the end of last year (2012). She came out as 150 pounds, and it only took her about 30 minutes for to gain the strength and balance to stand up. Sophomore Kenzie Smith says, “Giraffes are my favorite animals. They are sooooo cute and awesome to watch.” This past week, five baby Madagascar Big-Headed Turtles hatched in their Madagascar Lemur

Summer is just around the corner and that means it’s time for Free Press Summer Fest. For the past several years Houston has held the celebration of the start of the summer with a two-day music festival. Last year, Summer Fest really took off which has lead to the massive popularity of the event this upcoming year. Houstonians are buzzing about the lineup released last month, which include: The Postal Service, BASSNECTAR, Iggy and the Stooges, Passion Pit, TV on the Radio, Calvin Harris, Alabama Shakes, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Of Monsters and Men, Arctic Monkeys, and Matt & Kim. The list goes on with other great performers. Charlie Zenker12 exclaimed his

exhibit in the Houston Zoo. They were approximately 6.8 grams each, just a little bit larger than a US quarter. The Houston Zoo is the first zoo in the world to start breeding this kind of turtle. This species can only be found in seven protected areas in western Madagascar. This baby Orangutan’s name is Tripa. She shares a close relationship with his mother and they are hardly ever are apart. Like most Orangutan infants, Tripa completely depends on her mother for food, transportation, and lots of tender love and care. Orangutans have the longest childhood of all animals other than humans. On average, orangutans spend eight years with their mothers. However, these kinds of Orangutans are becoming endangered. There is only an estimated 7,000 Sumatran Orangutans remaining on the Island of Sumatra.

excitement by saying, “I cannot wait until Summer Fest, the line up looks amazing and nobody could be better than Calvin Harris.” Charlie is one of many at HC that are already thrilled about the festival. Clara Russell12 went on to say that, “Summer Fest is going to be the best way to start off the summer.” The event is on June 1st and 2nd and its being held at Eleanor Tinsley Park; the park is spacious and has an amazing view overlooking Downtown Houston skyline. Prices right now are at $120.

Along with the great music, the festival also shows off local artwork. The artwork usually represents Houston and all the different cultures it has. The festival this year is said to be

Throughout the year, the Mustang fine arts programs have taken part in multiple music and art festivals across Texas. Recently returning from a trip to Austin for the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (I.S.A.S.) Festival, the band, choir, and multiple art classes have had the opportunity to participate in the nation’s “premier annual regional arts festival among independent schools.” Hosted by St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, Austin, the trip

was a complete success. The festival is intended to stimulate creativity in the performing arts and encourage high schools in the development of their fine arts programs. Each festival has been an integral part of the fine arts programs and each student involved has allowed the school to thrive in achievement in concerts and contests across the state.

Texas Private School Music Educators Association (TPSMEA) is a musical association involving students across

the state. This year, six students were selected to audition for this exclusive group. The process includes “kids from all over the state competing for about 160 spots,” Mr. Ousley, the choir director, explains. After the audition once the spots are filled, a three day rehearsal period takes place in preparation for a big concert. The three members of the choir selected for the audition were each ranked in the top ten singers of their categories, including a total of 40 people.

Howdy, HC. I can officially say that with a purpose now that I will be a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2017 next year. This year is beginning to get bittersweet for the seniors as our time here is slowly running out. We have a lot to be excited about with college only a few months away, but I have loved my time at HC and am not ready to go yet. To all you seniors out there: don’t rush through these last few weeks with a “get me out of here” attitude. Relish the time you have left with all these wonderful teachers and underclassmen. There are many people that you may never see again after graduation, so you ought to make the most of the short few weeks we have left at this place. This school is now part of your story, so make it a good story. To all of you underclassmen out there: on behalf of Courtney and myself, it has been a blast and an honor to be able to serve as Student Body Chaplains this year. I know you probably are a little weary from hearing our voices everyday on announcements and almost every week in chapel, but you’ve all been so encouraging. However, I’m far more excited for what you guys have to look forward to next year. I’m tempted to just take a gap year to hang around school and see all the amazing things Ian Hopper11 and Amanda Brock11 are going to do next year. Both of these future chaplains are unbelievable examples of what it means to follow Jesus and have inspired hearts and creative minds to lead this school in an amazing way. You don’t even know how much they’re going to bless you (unless you’re already being blessed by them, which many of you are). For the next few weeks we’ve got some awesome chapels lined up to close the year out. On April 11th, we were visited by Allen Wolf, a Christian movie producer who shared his testimony on what it’s like to follow Jesus in that industry. The following week, we have Senior Chapel and you’ll get to hear straight from some of your favorite seniors. On April 25th, we have the Founder’s Chapel, which will feature many of the schools board members and founders on campus as guests. We have two more chapels following that on May 2nd and our final chapel on May 9th. If you actually read this article in every issue, check out the next one to see a Q&A with your new chaplains.

This year, 45 different Houston area high schools have been selected and nominated to participate in the 2013 Tommy Tune Awards. Since it has started in 2002, the Tommy Tune Awards have grown to be the largest celebration of high school musical theatre in Houston. The annual award ceremony recognizes excellence of students and teachers throughout the nine county metropolitan area. The only other place this awards ceremony is held is in June in New York City, which is a founding member of the National

High School Musical Theatre Awards. Tommy Tune Awards 2013 tickets went on sale Wednesday, April 3 and the Awards Show is Tuesday, April 16. Houston Christian’s theatre program was nominated for two Tommy Tune Awards (Best Musical Direction and Best Costumes). The theater program put on the Wizard of Oz this year, and it was a huge hit not only in the HC community, but around the theatre community in the Houston area. The actors and actresses put a whole lot of time, effort,

and energy into this performance. The drama classes help enhance the actors and actresses skills. In addition to drama classes, the curriculum offers after school training and experience in technical theater, set design and building, sound and lighting engineering and costuming. The classes are fun and engaging and are open to students with a wide range of theatre experience. Junior Troy Everist says, “The plays get better every year, and I cannot wait to see what they do next year.” The play was directed by the theatre teacher, Bobby Linhart, but also a high school stage director that is a student at HC. Junior Cassie Cater was the stage director for all the plays during the week and practice going into the performances. Bobby Linhart says,

“Without Cassie it would have been extremely hard to get all the things done that we needed to finish in time.” Another big role that was needed to succeed was HC teacher Linda Oldham. Mrs. Oldham helped the theatre department by creating, sizing, and sewing all the costumes that were in all the plays. Junior Drew Hendricks says, “Mrs. Oldham is the best teacher ever and has a huge heart and we are so grateful to have her helping with the play every year.” The HC theatre department has improved greatly over the years. Last year in Joseph and and Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, HC received their first ever Tommy Tunes award with Best Choreography. This year, HC theatre looks to improve again and win in both of their nominations.

As this time of year rolls around, students start to ponder what classes to take next year. Math, science, english and history are a given, but what electives should you take? If you are looking for a good way to stay in shape, or if you just enjoy dancing, dance class would be the perfect elective for you. Ms. Peters, the Silver Spurs Director, is also the dance teacher and teaches her students everything about dance. Students learn about different dance types, dance moves, dance positions and even

different muscles you use to dance. Dance can be a fun and creative way to express yourself while getting fit and in shape. Maddy Laster11 chose to take dance because she “thought it would be fun and new, and I have definitely learned a lot!” Even if you think you would not be interested in dance, you should definitely look into giving it a try. Troy Everist11 says that “dance is hard but refreshing, and I am glad I took it.” Dance is a nice way to get a workout in mid-day and learn about how fun and exciting dance truly is.

Every year the dance classes come together to put together a spring concert, and this year it falls on April 17 and 18. They will be working collaboratively to show the audience how much they have learned over the course of the year. Kaitlyn Hovermale10 specifically likes the hip-hop routine they will be performing, and says that she “can’t wait to show everyone how much we have learned this year.” Everyone should come out and support your fellow students in the Black Box, and applaud them on a job

Best place to see...The best place to, see, and play at the beach or in the ocean by Ryan Hooker,, Stang Staff

Best place to swim with dolphins- The best place to swim with these cute sea creatures is the Florida Keys. Just ask Lisa! The crystal clear water and great weather makes for a fantastic experience. Best place to go deep sea fishing- The little known Portuguese Island of Madeira is home to some of the best deep sea fishing available. The waters surrounding the Island are

full of record-sized blue marlin and tuna. Debatably the most fun fighting fish in the ocean.

Best beach to go to- Bora Bora, Tahiti is absolutely

breathtaking. There is no better place in the world to be sitting in the sand and soaking up the rays than Bora Bora. Sitting in white powder-like sand, surrounded by bright turquoise water, palm trees, and tiki huts makes Bora Bora the best beach in the world to visit.

Best place to catch a wave- Maui, Hawaii is infamous for its surfing spots. From beginner waves to huge 70 ft+ waves can be found on the island of Maui. So whether you’re a beginner, or a seasoned world champion, Maui is the place to catch a gnarly wave, brah.

Best cruise to take out of Galveston- There are some pretty great cruises leaving out of the port of Galveston

believe it or not. One great one with some quality stops is the Carnival Magic. It is a fairly new boat and it has a lot to do onboard. But it also stops in exciting places like Key West, Nassau, and Freeport. This is

a great trip to take without having to travel too far to get to the port of departure.

Best tropical resort- The best place to stay is definitely the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. It has everything you could ever want or imagine. Obviously you will be in the Bahamas, which is great by itself, but you also have a waterpark and casino at the hotel to entertain you if you ever get bored.

Best place to swim with stingrays- If you have the guts and Steve Irwin wasn’t your biggest role model, then swimming with stingrays can be very thrilling and exciting. The best place to do this is Stingray City, Grand Cayman. Here you can hold and hand feed these mammoth sized stingrays. You will definitely have an up close and personal experience with these sea beasts.

In the last 100 years, there has been a dramatic shift towards urbanization. Cities and areas that were once sprawled out across plenty of square mileage have found a new direction to go in the development of hotels and homes: up. A picture of Dubai, Shanghai, or any other major metropolis

from fifty years ago will bear a vague similarity to what it is today. Skyscrapers and high-rise living has taken over in the method of building simply because it is a more efficient use of land, and much more useable area can be created. The sky is the limit for buildings such as the Burj Khalifa, which stretches over a half mile into the Dubai clouds. However, it is almost as if architects have suddenly gotten bored with such grand feats of height, and now want to go the other way. Not underground, but underwater. Specifically in the hotel world, underwater living is not a new idea. What is new is the large-scale planning and widespread excitement over these proposals. Cities such as Dubai have had multiple plans go out and get struck down, but one looks like it may become a reality. Originally, the very first legitimate underwater hotel was in the United States in Key Largo, Florida. However, Jules’ Undersea Lodge is far from luxury. It is a diver’s haven where guests must scuba dive down to even get into their rooms. At the Utter Inn of Lake Malaren, Sweden, they take a different approach. From above water, it appears to be a small red Swedish house floating around, but on the inside there is a ladder that leads down to a small room beneath the surface of the sea. Unusual Hotels of the World described the experience like this: “There is a remarkable feeling to go to bed while the fish are surrounding and watching you carefully. You are in an aquarium - for fish to be beholders of man.” Architects planning in Dubai are set on finally constructing a full-scale underwater resort. The Polish company Deep Sea Technology is ready to build The Water Discus, a resort that will feature 21 underwater rooms, all with the utmost luxury. “I don’t know dude, can they keep it sealed? I feel like water would leak in,” said Preston Drake11. Preston shares the same concern as many of the architects, whose number one concern is how to keep the water out. Only time will tell whether an idea such as this will ever work.

Tryouts are commencing and friends of cheerleaders know what that means: stress. Some ask how three days in April can bring such mood swings, tears, and eventually happiness in such a short time. So, as a favor to all those who are curious about tryouts and interested in helping their friends during this time, here is a guide to what cheer tryouts are actually like. The process is fairly simple. Cheer tryouts are a three day process in which you learn a cheer on the first day, participants learn a dance on the second day followed by mock tryouts, and they try out on the third day. Sounds pretty simple right? In fact, it is pretty difficult. During this time a panel of judges is looking at their grades, behavior, and evaluations sent in by the girls’ teachers. In other words, cheer tryouts do not just last three days; it lasts all year (or at least one part of it does). Speaking from prior experience, cheer tryouts has not been my favorite time of the year, but now that I am a veteran of the process, I have learned to appreciate and become excited for it. In fact, it is a time that is actually designed to show what you have been working on and show off your new skills. Cheer tryouts may not be as stressful if it was not for being in a room full of forty girls competing for about 25-30 spots, (so basically it is stressful by nature), but it is not designed to torture those who take part. For those of you who are skeptical about trying out for cheer this year, do not be afraid. Yes, cheer tryouts will stress you out, but the there is so much that makes this experience worth all of the stress. You will learn so much about who you are by pushing yourself to try new skills and meet new people. You

will learn about how far you are willing to go to achieve goals and you will find that you are so much more confident (especially after mock tryouts). Cheer tryouts are an amazing outlet for self-expression and you certainly will not regret experiencing tryouts, especially if you make a team. Frequently, cheer tryouts get a bad reputation, but often times it is just drama. Cheer tryouts are not a nightmare and they certainly will not kill you. Cheer is one of the best ways to learn about yourself and learn to be a leader. Trying out is an awesome experience, but you have to make this experience good for yourself. It is not easy to ignore the drama that takes place during tryouts, but it is possible. For all of you trying out, I encourage you to take a deep breath, and go into this year with the best attitude possible. For all of you who are not trying out, I hope you have a better insight into what tryouts are actually like. Hug a cheerleader who is trying out this April, and encourage her to do her best!

Tryout Terror: the process of becoming a cheerleaderCheer tryouts have a bad reputation, but what are they actually like?

The end of the year is almost here, and for seniors, it is in the end of our high school career, time to move away without the comfort of our parents, and embark on a new chapter of our lives. Sounds exciting, right? It is definitely an exciting time, but a scary one as well. We can never be completely ready for college, but some of us are prepared in different ways. I think that I am prepared for a lot of aspects of college that many seniors are not. Three things that make me feel ready for college are the following: I can do my own laundry, I know how to eat healthy, and I can manage my money. All three of these are aspects of college that will hit you hard and fast if you are not prepared. Since last year, I have been washing and folding my own clothes. My mom is one of those moms that says, “When I was ten, I was washing my own clothes, and you are 16 and you don’t even do it!” Well, eventually I got tired of hearing my mom use that excuse, so I just decided that I will have to learn eventually, so might as well start now. A lot of seniors have no idea how to wash clothes because their parents have always done it for them. Well, time to learn seniors, because before you know it you are going to have to wash them yourself, without any help. So, I am definitely prepared for that change in college because I already know how to wash my own laundry. I am definitely not a master chef, but I do love to cook my own food, mostly because my family does not eat most of the food that I eat, so I have to make my own dinner sometimes. Living in a dorm, cooking will be nonexistent for the most part besides the kitchens that are open on every floor for anyone who wants to use them. Even though I cannot cook as often as I would like to, I can definitely still eat healthy. Sadly though, there will not be a Whole Foods in close proximity to where I will be going to college, but I will have to make it work. Nonetheless, all of my time studying and practicing eating

healthy will definitely help me maintain that diet and not gain the freshman fifteen. Obviously there will be temptations, because most college students do not care about eating vegetables with hummus instead of ramen noodles. Even though there will temptations around me, I definitely know that I will be able to stay away from them and continue my healthy lifestyle. Lastly, I think that I am prepared (as much as I can be) to manage my money. I have amazing parents who are not making me pay for tuition or room and board, but of course I will still have expenses. I already am frugal with my money, so I imagine I will still be able to keep that up. Of course it is going to be hard to not go out to eat a lot, or go shopping when I am out of class, but those are things that I am going to have to sacrifice so that I will have some money for necessities. Grocery shopping is one area that I will definitely have to be careful how I spend my money, since I buy mostly organic and gluten free items. This may mean that I will not be able to buy everything organic that I do now (which is something that I will have to sacrifice), or I could not go shopping for a new dress that weekend, and buy organic vegetables instead. That probably sounded extremely lame, but oh well, it is what it is. Anyway, money management is definitely a must for college…no one wants to be broke and bored the whole year. I am completely unprepared for many things and will be blind sided when I experience certain new things, but there are a few things that I can confidently say I am prepared for (for the most part). I am sure there are many other seniors that are prepared for different aspects of college than I am. But, I do know one thing is for sure: we can never be completely prepared, so we must try our best to prepare ourselves so college does not completely knock us off our feet.

LAST YEAR, cheerleaders worked extremely hard to learn a dance routine for the judges. This year’s participants will have to learn a similar routine.

Stephen’s Sports Report: The Heat’s Hot Streak Stats and opinions on the Heat’s 27-game win streak.

On March 27, 2013, the Miami Heat’s incredible 27 game win streak came to an end. The Chicago Bulls smelt blood and did not stop until they earned it. Lead by Luol Deng (26pts), and Carlos Boozer (19pts and 17rebs), the Bulls found a way to stop the best player in the world, Lebron James, and his Miami Heat. The Bulls played a more physical game than the defending champs and found a way to get a gritty win over the top team in the league. The scrappy play of point guard, Kirk Heinrich, gave the Bulls the early edge and the team never let up. For Lebron, Dwyane Wade, and the rest of the star studded Heat, March 27th was the end of a two month long journey that resulted in the second longest win streak in not only NBA history, but also in the history of sports. As the streak and phenomenal series of games comes to an abrupt end, I am going to do one last dissection on the astounding play of the reigning champs. It is hard to know where to start when it comes to talking about an accomplishment of this sort, but I guess the beginning would not be a bad option. Before the streak began, the Heat sat in third in the league record-wise, behind the Thunder and the Spurs. Both teams were playing some of their best basketball of the season and did not look like they were slowing down anytime soon. At this point, Dwyane Wade was just starting to get his explosiveness and legs back to 100%

after having offseason knee surgery this summer (surgery kept him out of the 2012 Olympic Games). This is something that people tended to overlook when taking a peek at D-Wade’s stats prior to the streak. He was getting some similar judgement that Dwight Howard has been receiving all season long. Howard is coming off offseason back surgery as well. Ignited by the D-Wade of old, the play of the entire team began to lift off. Of course, the way Lebron has been playing couldn’t hurt, but it was the revitalized Wade who brought them to a new level.

Some key stats about the Heat can go completely unnoticed in the midst of such an outstanding streak however. Not only do they go unnoticed, but they will really make you realize how amazing the streak really was. For starters, the Heat are the worst rebounding team in the NBA. Sitting at 38.2 rebounds per game, this number is well below the league average and is a whole 1.4 behind the second lowest in the league, the Boston Celtics. If you are a basketball fan, this is a stat you will really appreciate, mainly because you understand how hard it is to win games and lose in the rebound column. This next one though, is even more ridiculous, but it will, at the same time, explain why they can win games and be the worst in the league in rebounding. The Heat are also last in the NBA in

field goal attempts per game, yet they are winning games by the second largest point differential, +8.0. Then, they are fifth in the league in scoring at 103.3 points per game. I’m a huge sports fan and I love looking at stats like these and analyzing teams and players, but this is hard for me to get my head around. So, there’s a team in the NBA who can be the worst in rebounding, attempt the least amount of shots, score over 100 points a game, and then still outscore all of their opponents by a whole eight points. That’s almost unbelievable, and had the Heat not won 27 straight like this, I probably wouldn’t believe it was possible. I guess it is though...?

So to sum this up a little bit for you, the best team in the league, played like the best team in the league for a good two months of the season. There were plenty of winners and losers that we can take from the result of the streak, but I would have to say, one notable loser would be the 2013 Eastern Conference Playoffs. The East won’t be a challenge for the heat. As Bill Simmons would say, “Fo-Fo-Fo!!!” The combination of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and some role player named Chris Bosh is just way too much for anyone to compete with. I’m just going to come out and say it, sometime in June we should see Lebron holding up his second Finals trophy and earning his

second Finals MVP and that “Not 2, Not 3, Not 4, Not 5, Not 6, Not 7” speech by Lebron may have a chance to take shape and come true (That is, if he doesn’t go back to Cleveland in two years. Mark my words, he’s going back to Cleveland in two years.). Anyways, this historic streak was one for the ages, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if they don’t pull another one off next season as well. The Heat are for real, and they are here to stay, so we might as get used to them winning in bunches because I don’t see them losing their dominance any time soon.

Easter traditions I loveAnnual events on the day Jesus roseBy Samantha Moore, Stang Staff

KIRK HINRICH stepped in front of the 6’8” 265 pound Lebron James to keep points off the board

Each year, many families commemorate Easter Sunday with friends, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives; at least that’s how it has always worked in my household. This special holiday is something to be celebrated, but how you celebrate is different for everyone.

For me, this special Sunday starts out with Easter church service at Second Baptist. Stopping for breakfast on the way, the five members of my family pile into the car, always ten minutes later than expected, and attend church. My brother, who is home from college, fights my sister for the vocal lead on whatever song is playing on the radio, and the five minute drive kicks off the morning. Arriving two minutes late almost every year makes finding seats in the service a challenge, but it’s always accomplished.

After hearing the message from Dr. Ed Young, we quickly escape to the parking lot to “fight the traffic,” as my dad always yells back to those of us dragging behind his power walk. Stopping back by the house to pull the ham out of the oven, we head over to my grandma’s house for an afternoon with all of my extended family. After catching up with all of my family, we all sit down at the table and enjoy a ton of food. From homemade macaroni and cheese to delicious honey baked ham, every course is covered by some spectacular dish. Questions and comments fly around the room; the usual “How’s school?” or “You’ve grown up so much,” are answered generically.

After cleaning the kitchen, the traditional Easter egg hunt takes place all throughout the front and back yard of my Grandma’s house. With the kids growing up, there are fewer participants each year leaving the little ones with more and more candy after each hunt. Four-year-old, Zach races Caden and Colton around in a competition to find the most eggs. Watching these three cousins has been my favorite part of Easter Sunday for the past few years. Finally, when the sun starts to sink, we load back into the car after being hugged to death and head back home. I absolutely love spending this time with my family. It’s so much fun to celebrate the resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ, with all of my loved ones.

Animal rights vs human rightsWhat do we do about this issue?By Ryan Hooker, Stang Staff

Animals. There are more of them than us. But do they deserve the same rights as us? This is the great debate. Where do we draw the line? As a native born Texan, there is nothing I enjoy more than a good day of hunting or fishing. Does this make me a horrible person? I like to think not. Then again, every time I see Sarah Mclachlan on the SPCA commercials, I ponder what kind of horrible person it would take to abuse all of those cute dogs and cats. This is where the line is drawn for me.

The sports of hunting and fishing are very crucial to the ecosystem whether you like it or not. If no hunting or fishing took place, species would increase in population rapidly and overrun the amount of space they have to live.

So where do they go? The answer is urban areas. Hogs, which are extremely overpopulated in Texas, are a huge nuisance to farmers and cost them large sums of money in destroyed crop and equipment. Also deer when wandering onto urban roads, can be a huge danger, causing over 200 deaths per year in car crashes. So considering the huge roles hunters play in the controlling of the population, I believe hunting should be accepted as a necessity, instead of looked down upon as “animal cruelty.”

On the other hand, the abuse of domestic animals (Dogs, Cats, Horses etc.) should not be tolerated. They are not nuisances to society and should be treated humanely.

The Carrie Diaries is the CW’s latest show. After big hits like The Vampire Diaries and One Tree Hill, most fans expected a hit. However, if you are like me, you were highly disappointed in this new show. As a Sex and the City (SATC) fan,

I was so excited to see this show about Carrie’s high school years and how she grew to love New York City. However, AnnaSophia Robb (the character who portrays Carrie), despite her talent, left me disappointed and confused. She was nothing like Carrie Bradshaw I came to know and love. The hair, the clothes, and her overall personality differs from the spunky, poodle-haired Carrie played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Carrie is a funny gal who can create a funny situation out of even the worst of times. But, from watching the Carrie Diaries, I did not gather that. I found that Carrie often times was shy and a little awkward.

Even the life story differs from show to show. In the Original SATC Carrie grew up with only her mother, as an only child who was abandoned by her father at a young age. In the Carrie Diaries, a single father is raising her with her younger sister, and they all try and pull together after the death of Carries mother. Is anyone else seeing a problem with this!? The life struggles that Carrie faced in SATC is what made her who she was: a woman constantly searching for the love of a man. If that part of the show is changed, it loses all of it’s integrity as a prequel to a beloved show; more importantly, the way Carrie came to New York was an integral part of the show and it has been changed. In The Carrie Diaries, Carrie’s

father allows her to work for a law firm in New York City as an intern. This is how Carrie begins to fall in love with New york. However, in SATC Carrie moves to NYC to begin her life as a young adult. She is a writer. She was not interesting in being a lawyer. Although these changes may seem insignificant, they were a disappointing change to an avid watcher of the original show. Junior Madison Sheehy had the same reaction, “I loved the original plot of SATC and it made me quite disappointed that they changed so much of the story line. Why would you need to change that much? The show was already bound to be a hit!”

Although, opinions may differ from mine and Madison’s. I have heard from a number of people that they love this show, and that they adore the clothes, the story line, and the characters. I agree. The clothes are adorable, the story line is cute, and the actors are talented. However, people who fell in love with the four fabulous friends, will most likely find it hard to watch The Carrie Diaries due to its indescrepencies regarding the basic plot.

After thirty-two years of performing in front of crowds of thousands of people, the “King of Country” has begun his final tour. Artist, George Strait began his Cowboy Rides Away Tour, featuring Martina McBride and Randy Rogers Band, on January 18th, 2013 in Lubbock, TX.

As he moved through Texas, he made his way to the great city of Houston to perform his last concert at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) on March 17, 2013. When the complete HLSR concert line-up came out in January, tickets for concerts such as Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and other popular country artists sold pretty quickly but none as quickly or as many as George Strait. These tickets went for a variety of prices ranging from $150 to $25 in the 600 level of Reliant Stadium. Usually the rodeo, which includes bull riding, mutton bustin, barrel races, and more, comes prior to the concert. Not this time.

The rodeo portion of the HLSR had to end one day before the whole

HLSR ended so that the King of Country’s tour could take place and still end at a decent time.

Thousands of people gathered at Reliant for this performance of a lifetime. Among these thousands of people who were lucky enough to attend was Emma Loo12, who attended the concert with her family. “It was so fun to be at the George Strait concert; I’ve always looked forward to seeing him in concert because I love his music.” said Emma.

Senior, Clara Russell, was also able to go, but unlike many others, didn’t know she could go until that day. Clara descried the way she got tickets saying, “Well, I didn’t have tickets but then Rachel Henry’s mom made a Facebook status saying that she was going to give away four tickets because she couldn’t go,

so I asked her about it and she gave me four club seat tickets. I was so happy.” Clara was able to take her boyfriend and two friends and according to Clara, they had a great time.

George Strait sang his most popular songs such as “Troubadour”, “Check Yes or No”, “Give It Away”, “Here for a Good Time”, and “Write This Down.” Unfortunately, the King won’t be back at the HSLR, but his final tour does

This month, I will be sharing information that I believe everyone should know because so many of us are uninformed. So many people believe the crazy weight loss myths that they see on social media (Pinterest especially) or hear about on TV shows and movies. I am going to clarify three of the weight loss myths that so many people buy into everyday. First myth: snacking is always bad. This is completely false. The only true part about this statement is that snacking can be unhealthy if your snack is a burger at McDonalds or even a bowl of ice cream. Otherwise, snacking is good for you (if it is done correctly). Many people think that if they do not eat, they will lose weight. Obviously that is not true because all that does is starve your body of nutrients that your it needs to function properly. Snacking in between meals is usually discouraged (especially by mothers) because many people do not want to ruin their appetite. A lot of the times you are not as hungry when the meal comes if you eat a little something before, so it causes you to not overeat. It is healthy for your metabolism to have a few snacks throughout the day: mid morning, afternoon (after lunch) and after dinner (light snack). Some examples of a mid morning snack could be a small yogurt and granola, a banana, and cottage cheese. A mid afternoon snack could be an apple with peanut butter, a hardboiled egg and cheese,

or hummus and cucumbers. An after dinner snack could be a cutie orange (or two), a pear with cinnamon, or yogurt. Second myth: All carbs are bad. This is not true either. In fact, carbs are good to consume after a workout to refuel your body. The best way to eat carbs is through whole grains. But, there are definitely some carbs that you should avoid like processed carbs that are high in sugar and white flour. Instead, you should eat whole grain carbohydrate foods like whole wheat or grain pasta noodles, bread, brown rice, and even flour. I would advise to stay away from products that are “multi grain” because it could be just to fool you into buying that product. You never actually know how much of that product contains healthy grains, so I would just stick to whole grain. Beans are also a healthy carb that provide nutrition, especially black beans. Third myth: You have to give up your favorite foods. Surprisingly, you do not have to give up your favorite foods (completely). But, you do need to give up how often you eat them and how much of them you eat. For example, if you drink four Dr. Peppers everyday, cutting it down to one a day will bring healthy results for sure. Of course, exercise is important to see results, but regardless, you do not have to completely give up eating your favorite foods; you just simply have to cut down the amount and how often you eat or drink it. If you allow yourself to have something that

you love every now and then, it will satisfy your craving to eat something unhealthy. I sincerely hope that someone benefited from this article, even if it was only one person. These weight loss myths, along with the thousands of others, could truly change the way that you view weight loss. I encourage you to research some more myths because it is vital to be educated if you want to see results in a healthy way.

Houston Astros face many struggles in the American League in 2013

SportsApril 201314

The Madness is finally overNCAA’s annual March Madness tournament excites sports fansby Spencer Traver, Stang Staff

As the 2013 season approaches, the Houston Astros face new struggles as they make the transfer from the National League to the American League. The H-Town favorites will be playing high-quality market teams such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers. The Astros are the youngest team in all of Major League Baseball and will struggle to compete with a lack of talent and resources. During the offseason, the Astros lost talent in Jed Lowrie, Wilton Lopez, and Jordan Schafer, but they acquired low-market players such as Carlos Pena, Philip Humber, and Erik Bedard. The 2013 lineup will be highlighted by second baseman Jose Altuve, first baseman Brett Wallace, and center fielder Justin Maxwell. However, that is the least of their problems; after once having a powerful pitching rotation in Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, and Roy Oswalt, the Astros are left with Bud

Norris and Lucas Harrell. When asked about the upcoming season, junior Charles Bacarisse said, “I do not think the Astros are worth following this year. Our varsity squad could challenge them in a three game series.” Yes, Astros fans, this is another rebuilding year for your hometown team. While the current Astros roster lacks mature talent, the farm system contains a few stars. The most prominent star in the minors for the Astros is shortstop Carlos Correa, the #1 draft pick in 2012 from Puerto Rico. HC Alum Mitchell Traver, who played with Carlos at the Perfect Game All American Classic, said, “Carlos really made an impact on me in a short period of time. As a person, he is first-class; he puts everyone else before himself and treats them as he would like to be treated. As a player, he is incredibly gifted. 97 mph across the infield, sub-7 60 yard dash, and a future .300, 25 home run hitter...that just does not come around. But

The 75th annual March Madness tournament came to a close Monday night when the Louisville Cardinals beat the Michigan Wolverines by a final score of 82-76 to win the National Championship. The Cardinals, ranked #1 overall in the tournament, closed out their season on a 16-game win streak with the victory on Monday night. While the best team took the trophy home, this year’s March Madness was entertaining and eventful in every round of play. In the opening round, several upsets occurred. Oregon beat Oklahoma State, Wichita State beat Pittsburgh, Ole Miss beat Wisconsin, La Salle beat Kansas State, Harvard beat New Mexico, Iowa State beat Notre Dame, Minnesota beat UCLA, Florida Gulf Coast beat Georgetown, and California beat UNLV. These opening round upsets began a series of remarkable stories. Oregon, Wichita State, La Salle, and Florida Gulf Coast all reached the Sweet Sixteen round, knocking off schools such as Saint Louis, Gonzaga, and San Diego State. In the Sweet Sixteen round, several upsets occurred leaving only a sole #1 seeded team remaining, Louisville. Syracuse upset Indiana, Marquette upset Miami, and Michigan upset Kansas. However,

the madness did not end here. In the round famously known as the “Elite Eight”, Louisville advanced as the only predicted winner for its region. Michigan, Syracuse, and Wichita State all upset teams in their respective regions to make their way to the Final Four, hosted in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. While Louisville was expected to win, the team experienced more drama than any other team in the tournament. Guard Kevin Ware went to block a shot in the game against Duke at the end of the first half and ended up suffering a gruesome leg injury, resulting in his shin protruding out of his skin roughly six inches. This injury sent him to the hospital for immediate surgery, ending his season and possibly his career. The team rallied around Ware and used his story as an inspiration to guide them to a national championship. Junior transfer Luke Hancock also stepped up and scored 22 points to win the most outstanding player award for the Final Four. The inspiration from Kevin Ware’s story and remarkable response to the injury fueled the Cardinals to ride a wave to the championship and edge out Michigan in the final seconds of play to become national champions. In a most

exciting fashion, the Cardinals came back from a 35-23 deficit with a few minutes remaining in the first half to lead Michigan by 10 points near the end of the game. The team then celebrated with confetti and streamers and cameras and people. The baskets were even lowered to accommodate Kevin Ware so that he could partake in the ceremonial net cutting. Along with a National Championship under his belt, the Cardinals coach, Rick Pitino, was inducted into the hall of fame that same morning. The Cardinals now look to repeat as champions next March.

what sticks out the most, more than the humility and the talent, is his love for the game. There is not a thing he would not do to be his best in the game of baseball. That is why he will reach his potential; that is why he will be a superstar.” Other upcoming prospects include Jonathan Singleton, George Springer, and Jarred Cosart. While the Astros may not be the best team in the league right now, there is hope for the organization in the future. Senior and Astros fanatic Ramsey Al-Azem said, “The Astros may not be on top right now. However, somewhere down the line I believe that they will be a dominant team again. With prospects like Correa, Singleton, and Cosart, we boast the potential to be great soon.” The Astros opened up the season in the Lone Star Showdown against the Texas Rangers on March 31, 2013 with an 8-2 win. Go out and support your ‘Stros this year!

Even with the NCAA Tournament, March Madness, preparing for its finishing games, basketball fans do not have to be upset. The NBA Playoffs and more great basketball is on its way. The NBA season is nearing its end and more and more playoff spots are being clinched every week. Senior, Ryan Leiss says, “this NBA season is crazy. There are new teams in the playoffs and good teams just fighting to barely make it in.” In the East, most of the eight spots are set for the rest of the season, with only the Philadelphia 76’ers, who are in ninth, are seven games behind the eighth place, Milwaukee Bucks. The Miami Heat are clearly going to be first in the East, being twelve and a half games ahead of the second place, New York Knicks, and the third place, Indiana Pacers. The Heat with the second longest winning streak in NBA history propelled

themselves way ahead of the rest of the East. The second through eighth place teams are all two games behind each other, starting with the Knicks/Pacers at twelve and a half games behind first and all the way to the Bucks that are 21 and half games back. The other teams include, Brooklyn Nets (fourth), Atlanta Hawks (fifth), Chicago Bulls (sixth), and Boston Celtics (seventh). Junior Ashi Peter says, “the Celtics are going all the way. Paul Pierce is the best player in NBA history.” However in the West, there is still a lot of spots up for grab to get better, higher spots or even to just make the playoffs. From first to fifth, the teams are spread out by only five and half games. As of right now San Antonio Spurs (first) are only a game and a half up on the Oklahoma City Thunder (second). Then, the Denver Nuggets (third) are four and half games behind. Finally, the Los

The varsity lacrosse team traveled for the third time to Clearwater, Florida. The trip could be considered more of a vacation rather than a sporting event. The lacrosse players spent most of their time hanging out around the beachfront resort. Although, they did play three games while they were down there. The first opponent the lacrosse team faced was a local team. The second was a competitive private school in Florida, IMG, and the third was the famous boarding school from Connecticut, Loomis Chaffee. This was the third year the lacrosse team has travelled to this vacation

destination spot. And the tradition will continue because of the team bonding that happens. Senior Captain, Ivan Morris praised the trip saying, “ I absolutely love going on the lacrosse trip because not only does it bring up old memories from the past trips but also it creates new ones. I think I can speak for all seniors when I say, that its very sad that this was our last year to go on the trip.” The other captain, Brooks Lehle added, “Other than the fact that I am blessed by my fathers present, my favorite part about the trip is the intense competition we have going in beach volleyball. The competition

Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies are both five games behind. Then the last three spots are the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, who are both 13 and a half games behind first. Finally, the Los Angeles Lakers are 17 games back. However, there are still three teams that are fighting hard every game to get that last eighth spot, which would give them a spot in the playoffs. The Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, and Portland Trail Blazers are all only two games behind eighth place. Coach Crandall says, “the Thunder are going to dominate the playoffs after losing to the Heat in last years finals. The rest of the NBA season and this NBA postseason should be just as filled of excitement as March Madness, if not more. Stay tuned and watch the rest of the NBA season and postseason to get more great, amazing basketball.

started three years ago and since then it has grown into a very competitive, intense game on the beach. Also Senior, Michael Grandjean commented about the trip, “The Florida trip for the lacrosse team is just a great way for us to relax and enjoy the beach while still getting to play some good teams from the east coast.” The lacrosse team won the first game and lost the last two due to some key players out due to injuries. Overall the trip was a success and filled with good memories. Although they did not win first place, they built momentum going into district and hope to have a great rest of the season.

Over Spring Break the Boys Lacrosse team went on a trip to Florida where they faced three teams: a local team, a competitive private school in Florida, IMG, and a famous boarding school from Connecticut, Loomis Chaffee. Overall the trip was a success and filled with good memories. Although they did not win first place, they built momentum going into district and hope to have a great rest of the season.

The Girls Lacrosse team has fought a hard fight this season and is wrapping up with their last game against Village School. They have won two of their games so far: Katy and Friendswood, who are both big competition. Considering the competition they have faced, the Girls Lacrosse team has had a great season and are excited to see how SPC Playoffs turn out.

The Track and Field team got off to a great start and are trying to finish the year off strong. Amie continues to be Amie as she breaks records and competes to get first at every meet she attends. This year’s track team is very exciting and full of energy. They are a lot of fun to watch and be around. Everyone needs to watch out for the little, white guys running for the HC Track team.

Girl CodeHow to be the perfect date to Prom

1. Compliment himGT: Ladies, if your date looks bad, you obviously wouldn’t tell him that, but if they look nice, don’t keep it to yourself. Tell them! Trust me, guys actually do like being told that they look good and will appreciate your compliment. For example, if they’re wearing a really awesome bowtie, just say, “hey, I like your bowtie” easy as that. It doesn’t mean that you like them and it won’t make them think that either, so compliment away. Also, even if they look like a mess and have their shirt untucked, their tie untied, and no jacket, still tell them they look nice. Boost their confidence. Your thoughts Alexa?? AR: I agree completely. Most of the time your date will compliment you ladies, and if they don’t, well they should because I know you will all look gorg. Anyways, yes ladies, tell your date he looks handsome. It will make him so happy!

2. Don’t ditch himAR: Pretty much speaks for itself. I definitely think you should dance with your girls and hang with them, but don’t just go to the bathroom and hide and never come back because that’s just rude, even if you don’t even like your date. GT: Oh my gosh Alexa, it literally makes me so sad whenever I see girls do this. Y’all, for a guy it’s nerve wracking for them to ask you to prom. So since they took the time, the money, and the thought to ask you to prom in a creative way, please please please don’t ditch your date. It’s so inconsiderate. And like Alexa said, even if you don’t like your date, don’t hide from him. It’s only one night, and I’m sure you won’t die spending time with your date.

3. Be gratefulAR: This one is so important to me. Guys go through a lot of trouble making sure that we have the perfect prom that we have always dreamed of. This includes buying us a nice dinner. Even if the guy got money from his parents (which we are very thankful for), he is still spending money on you, so make sure that you tell him thank you. Not just thank you for dinner, but for a great time and being a good date (if he was one). Just make sure that you do a good job of showing him that you are thankful for everything he did. Don’t forget he probably went through trouble asking you to be his date in a cute, thoughtful way, so thank him again for that. GT: Totally Alexa, couldn’t have said it any better myself.

4. Go with the flowAR: This tip is hard for girls to do. Since we were old enough to know about prom, we have always dreamed about our prince charming sweeping us off of our feet, dancing with us, and all of that other stuff, kind of like Cinderella. I think it’s good to have high standards for prom, but if the limo is running a few minutes late don’t go all psycho crazy on him and freak out because no guy wants to have a crazy date that causes drama. What do you think Gianna?GT: Yeah, definitely. This may be hard to hear for a few of you ladies, but not everything is going to happen the way you want it to happen at the time you want it to happen. So what if your limo is running late, prom is like four hours long (dinner and dancing) so what’s the big deal? Now if something goes wrong and it’s an hour late, honestly then you can start to worry but

don’t freak out on your date. Most girls have a habit of taking their anxiety/nervousness out on their date if something goes wrong. For example, let’s just say it’s humid outside and your hair falls. Although this is so frustrating, do not start yelling at your date about how your night is going to stink because your hair isn’t perfect. Just go with it, and calmly try to figure it out or ignore it.AR: Honestly, your date won’t care if three of your curls fell, so don’t freak out and be high maintenance about it.

5. Dance the night awayGT: Honestly, this might be the key to being a great prom date because it includes pretty much all of these other rules. Except for maybe complementing, unless you would like to complement his gnarly dancing skillz. Really though, make sure you dance with your date. It doesn’t have to be alone with him the whole time, you can and should definitely dance with him in a group. Also ladies, be classy about the way you dance with your date. You’re not at a club, you’re at your high school prom. Keep it clean. For the slow songs they do play, make sure you dance with your date. How would you like it if your date ditched you to dance with another girl? I mean, even if you don’t like him, it still would kinda be like a slap in the face right? What do you think Alexa?AR: Totally agree with all those statements. Although the best part of prom is not all of the dancing, it is a huge part of the night, and if you refuse to dance with your date (or anyone for that matter), then it can definitely spoil his night and probably yours too whether you realize it or not.

Guy Codeby Stephen Consoli, Matt Scott, Matt Yochum, Stang Staff

Matt Yochum guest stars on Guy Code...and they continue to ramble...about random topics

Stephen: Here’s a good question for you young guys who are crushing on a girl and maybe want to pursue a relationship. How do you know when it’s the right time for you to introduce her to your family?

MattY: For any guy, letting a girl meet his family is usually a pretty big deal (if he actually likes the girl). Time is everything though. It’s just as important when picking a time that’s right for the girl as it is picking a time that’s right for your family. You don’t want to invite the girl over during a birthday party or something if she’s never even met your family before, because that just feels too forced. Even with my VERY limited experience in all these categories I do have a way of going about moments like these when they come about. The first step is figuring out what the girl is like. Every girl is different, so obviously every situation will be handled differently. If she is the shy-type, be ready to talk and it would probably be better to go to a sporting event together. If she’s more outgoing then you can simply just pick a night and invite her over for dinner or just invite her over to talk. Personally my parents really can make or break a girl for me. If they don’t like a girl, not only will I know it, but it’ll never work because they won’t put forth that extra $$$ that comes in handy during the holidays or special occasions when you are running low on cash. So to sum it up, every situation is different. So guys bring over your girls over and see how it goes!

Stephen: Aight Stroke, I see you’ve had some experience in these situations in the past. I like the way you’re thinking as well. You have to look at the big picture,

and like you said, the girl’s personality is part of that big picture perspective. Understanding her and the kind of situations that may or may not make her feel awkward around your family is huge. You don’t want to put her in a situation that will make her feel uncomfortable. Start with something small; a situation where she won’t feel pressured to have to impress anyone and she can just be herself.

MattS: Okay, first of all I think as guys, we have a bigger problem than the girls when it comes to “meeting the parents”. I know from my past experiences I have had to meet with her parents before they even had the chance to meet mine. So I think before you go through all the trouble you have to make sure the girls’ parents are okay with you hanging out with their daughter because if they’re not then you’re in for a long bumpy road. Anyways, I agree with everything Stroke had to say about the right time and it all depends on the girl. But my mom knows best when it comes to other girls. She will know more about the girl than I do just by her first impression. It actually can be pretty scary when my mom is right about what she thinks about a girl. So when in doubt listen to your mom because she can sniff the ones you don’t want from a mile away.

MattS: Okay this next topic has to do with the ego that most girls have and the idea you owe them something. They do what they want and then when you do something that they don’t like, then they get mad at you. As if I’m entitled to please them with everything I do or something.

It would be a different story if the girls were innocent, but they never are, and they have unstable ground to stand on.

MattY: Wow, well there’s a topic. I feel like the girl you’ve described could also be labeled as “high maintenance.” Even though girls who are labeled this way are usually labeled this way because they are believed to be undateable, but I don’t think that’s completely true. Obviously they believe they deserve probably more than what they actually do and for guys like you and me that’s very unattractive, but at the same time I know guys who like that. It’s really just about personal preference once you start talking about who is and isn’t datable.

MattS: Okay to clarify, As guys, yes we do owe girls respect and all the aspects of chivalry. Stephen: All I have to say, in the words of Coach Craig, “Break up before prom. Save the money.”
