Word has reached us from The North Pole that Santa’s Post Box will be in Kirk Ireton on Saturday afternoon 19th December. Listen out for the sound of reindeer dragging it around the village.

Apparently if the boys and girls of Kirk Ireton are particularly good and have spotted all the first 18 Real Advent Windows around the village by then, there is a possibility that Santa will visit us in person to collect their letters (in a socially distanced sort of a way!). But competition is stiff for Santa’s personal visits so the children will need to be particularly good.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Maurice for faithfully producing the Village Diary every month as well as sending out the interim emails. His hard work has helped us all keep connected through these difficult times and enabled our lovely village to remain the supportive and friendly community that it always is.

Cath Sinclair

Christmas Time . . . but I am sure that I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round . . . as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.

Charles Dickens

We wish all the members of the Lunch Club, Friendship Group and other friends in the village, a safe and Happy Christmas, looking forward to seeing every one in the new year.

Merry Christmas and a HUGE thank you from The Stable Shop We would like to wish all our wonderful customers, new and steadfast for their fantastic support and custom in this oddest of years. Before the March lockdown we were struggling financially and, ironically, the massive change in our lives brought us new and much needed custom both everyday and in orders.

Our turnover increased, our volunteers stepped up and Caroline was brilliant - keeping it all going even when the going got tough. We could never have managed without her, the volunteers, the deliverers, the collectors and the weekend teenagers, thank you all.

May 2021 be less odd, more fun and please keep supporting the shop, it's such a crucial component of our precious village life. Whatever Christmas brings have a good one!

Congratulations

Congratulations to my fellow church warden who, along with fifteen other recipients in the Chesterfield deanery, has been presented with the Bishop’s Badge for “co-ordinating Zoom services and providing tireless technical advice for the Team”. Bishop Libby had requested that the recipients should have worked within the helping community during Covid-19 in the six months leading up to September.

We in our Village know how John Sinclair has helped to keep people connected with Zoom etc. and we thank him very much.

Jo Coleman

Church Security

A big thank you to those who live in the houses surrounding the Church for your continued and on-going vigilance in keeping a sharp eye-out for any wrong goings-on.

There are always opportunist thieves looking for empty buildings to see what’s what, and recently I can report that Brailsford’s Church was sadly attacked.

The Church alarm in Kirk Ireton is to be further upgraded before Christmas and workers from GBSG are expected to be seen for two days currently listed for 14th and 15th. If you have any concerns, please contact one of the keyhold-ers who are John Sinclair, Mike Glendinning and Georgie Geraghty.

Many thanks

Martin Tomlinson Treasurer

FRiends And Neighbours

in Kirk Ireton FRiends And Neighbours in Kirk Ireton (FRANKI) was started in the last lockdown to provide a contact point for villagers needing help or their relatives who were unable to visit, if needed.

In actual fact most calls were to do with shopping or prescriptions and after a short time these needs were largely met by the Stable Shop and by Payne’s delivering.

The FRANKI phone is still monitored in case other needs arise (replies may be from a different number) so if you have a need that isn’t met by these other services then call or text us on 07443 957658.

Sort for School

Thank you to everyone who made donations to our 'Sort For School'. The donations from our school families and our fantastic village community have raised £195 for Friends of School! Thank you for your support.

We would like to thank everyone in the village who has supported us throughout 2020.

By placing your homes with us and actively promoting us by word-of-mouth, Facebook and other methods, you’ve helped us become the fastest-selling estate agent in Derbyshire – and the agent with most views-per-property. A tremendous achievement that we’re very proud of, having only opened in Wirksworth in June 2019.

Merry Christmas all and let’s hope for much better 2021!

Earlier in the year conversations echoed the words that were, apparently, often heard on the Western Front in the First World War ‘It’ll all be over by Christmas’, well it wasn’t and neither is Covid 19.

We are having to come to terms with a major shift in emphasis regarding the celebration of Christmas this year, and a lot of the fun ‘stuff’ that we do on the run up to December 25th has had to be cancelled or significantly modified. Having said that it is really important that we don’t get into a mindset which focuses on what we can’t do. Think, instead, about what we can do and live in the hopes that it will happen. It is a much more positive attitude and it fits entirely with that period on the run up to Christmas known as Advent.

Advent is a time of waiting and promise, a time of longing and anticipation. But the quality of this waiting is not edgy and anxious; it is hope-filled and quietly joyful. Waiting, being prepared to wait, indicates some measure of love or caring or interest – after all, we don’t usually spend much of our time waiting for something or someone of little or no concern to us.

Christmas may be a lot simpler this year with less of the frantic activity and perhaps a bit more reflection on what and who is important in our lives. From the Christian perspective it is a time of preparation for the celebration of the birth of that someone whose life has helped to shape our lives- Jesus Christ, and though as I write this we are still waiting for details of exactly how our celebration of Christmas will look like this year, these are a few of the things we believe will happen.

Advent windows. Why not dress a street facing window for Advent and Christmas. Focus on light, perhaps, as Jesus is the light of the world. Decorate it in whatever way seems appropriate for you and so share your ‘interpretation’ of the theme with your neighbours.

Doorstep Carols is a new national initiative that we will join at 6.00 pm on the 16th and finally a chance to sing out loud!

Live nativity. Last year’s live nativity was great fun. We started at school and made our way up the village, turned away from the inn we ended in a field. It can be done socially distanced! We hope to do this on Sunday 20th December from 2.30 pm starting at church this time.

As advertised elsewhere in this newsletter, the Carol Service will be on Zoom on 20th at 6.30 pm. We hope that it will be candle lit.

Christmas Service. Our Eucharist for Christmas Day will be at 9.30 am. Sadly, we shall not be able to run a Midnight Mass this year, though folks who like late night services would be very welcome at the Brassington Midnight Mass which starts at 11.30 pm.

In whichever way you celebrate Christmas this year. Do have a good one! Canon David Truby

Sunday 20th December 6.30 pm This year’s Carol Service will be carried out under Covid restrictions. A choir of villagers will sing accom-panied by the organ. A small (silent) congregation will attend (tickets in advance required).

The candle lit event will be broadcast on Zoom 860 7798 7109

Request your favourite carol for yourself, for a friend or for everyone (see below). You are invited to re-quest a favourite carol from the Bethlehem Carol Sheet. Dedications will be read out on the evening. Send your request by email to

[email protected]

1) Oh little town of Bethlehem. 2) In the bleak mid-winter. 3) Of the father’s love begotten. 4) As with gladness men of old. 5) The first Nowell. 6) Away in a manger. 7) while shepherds watched 8) See amid the winter’s snow. 9) The holly and the ivy. 10) Hark the herald angels sing. 11) Joy to the world. 12) O come all ye faithful 13) Silent night 14) It came upon the midnight clear 15) Good King Wenceslas 16) God rest you merry gentlemen 17) Ding dong Merrily on high. 18) Angels from the realms of glory. 19) Once in Royal David’s City. 20) On Christmas night all Christians sing. 21) We three kings of orient are.

The Church is particularly beautiful by candle light.

The church will be open for private prayer by candle light on Christmas Eve from 7.30 to 9.30pm,

carols playing quietly in the background.

Feel free to pop in for a socially distanced quiet moment of prayer or contemplation.

Collection Point in the Stable Shop

This year more than ever we at The Stable Shop feel we should be helping local families over this "festive" period.

Rural Action Derbyshire supported by Derbyshire Dales District Council have launched an appeal:

"Our clubs have already expressed a wish to purchase Christmas Dinner ingredients, treats and small craft/activity packs or books for the children and families they will support"

While we cannot collect fresh ingredients we would happily receive any tinned/dry food plus treats etc. as described above. This will then be taken to Matlock.

We also like to support The Padley Centre in Derby and the list of their needs are too many to list here. A list will be printed off and left in the shop. This will then be taken to Derby.

To be blunt, money is also very welcome at both these charities so if you would rather please donate in the shop. We will have a collection box ready.

Many thanks and Merry Christmas from us all at The

Stable Shop.

We have an Ikea office chair in good condition, free to the first person who contacts us.

year to be contactless on collection. Free delivery to Kirk Ireton and phone orders available via Martin Tomlinson
