The Stages of Matter
SolidLiquidGas
Solids
• Particles in a solid are tightly packed together in a regular pattern
• The particles vibrate but do not move from place to place
• A solid maintains its shape
Liquids
• Particles of a liquid are close together but do not have a regular pattern
• These particles vibrate, move about and slide past each other
• A liquid takes the shape of
it’s container
Gas
• The particles of a gas are far apart with no pattern
• These particles vibrate and move freely at high speeds
• A gas takes the shape of its container and can change volume
States of Matter (write this down)
Solid - The molecules of a solid are tightly packed and do not move very far. A solid holds it’s shape.
Liquid - The molecules of a liquid are close together but move around a lot. A liquid takes the shape of its’ container.
Gas - The molecules of a gas are far apart and move quickly. A gas takes the shape of it’s container and expands or shrinks to fill its container.
The Addition Of Heat
Solid Liquid Gas (Ice) (Water) (Steam)
Changing from State to State
• With the addition or removal of heat, one substance can be either a solid a liquid or a gas
