Sheriff Pohlmann guest speaker at Leadership St. Bernard

A Stronger, More Reliable Grid Coming to St. Bernard Parish

SBVFC Recognized at the State Capitol

St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann was among several guest speakers who attended a Leadership St. Bernard class titled “Par-ish Perspectives” held June 4 at the Maumus Center in Arabi.

Other guest speakers included: St. Bernard District Attorney Perry Nicosia, St. Bernard Fire Chief Thomas Stone and St. Ber-nard Parish Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kim Keene.

Leadership St. Bernard, now in its sixth year, is a program de-signed to educate and engage citizens in identifying needs, re-sources, and opportunities for St. Bernard Parish as a way to mo-tivate and increase the awareness of potential leaders.

Throughout the year, the course covers a wide array of topics including regional perspectives, quality of life issues, culture and tourism, diversity, education, industry, economic and community development and governmental affairs.

Entergy Louisiana crews soon will be working in St. Bernard Parish to help improve the area’s electrical grid reliability.

The $5 million project centers on installing new utility poles and a newly constructed feeder line along Judge Perez Drive between Munster Drive and the Highway 46 extension. “It’s important to work with all our business partners to continue striving to not only enhance our quality of life but improve overall safety for the res-idents of St. Bernard Parish,” said Parish President Guy Mcinn-is. “We appreciate Entergy’s commitment to improving services for our residents.” The grid-hardening efforts will improve overall electrical reliability in the Violet, Poydras, Toca, Kenilworth, Verret, Reggio, Woodlake, Delacroix, Florissant, Hopedale, Yscloskey and Shell Beach areas.

“This work is just one step in Entergy Louisiana’s long-term grid modernization efforts that will offer new technologies to improve customer experience and meet customers’ evolving needs,” said Gary Bazile, senior manager, metro customer service. “This is as much an investment in our grid as it is in our community. We want to ensure that we are doing all we can to keep the power running in homes and businesses in the area.”

The upgrades are expected to take approximately six months, beginning in June, with an estimated completion time of Novem-ber pending no unforeseen issues.

The St. Bernard Volunteers for Family and Community, Inc. (SB-VFC) were recognized at the State Capitol by the Louisiana House of Representatives on St. Bernard Day for their dedicated service and contributions to various deserving St. Bernard organizations.

Two Years StrongerYesterday marked the two year anniversary of the Congressional

Baseball Game practice shooting. As I look back on that day, I still have a lot of emotions, but I have a lot of special feelings for the friends, the heroes, the miracles, and all of you who prayed, who just said, ‘Even if we don’t know this guy, we’re praying for him and we want him to get better.’ And I am better; I keep getting better every day.

Making Progress on a Long-Term Reauthorization of NFIPThis week, the House Financial Services Committee unanimously

voted to advance the National Flood Insurance Program Reautho-rization Act of 2019 out of committee. After 12 short-term exten-sions, many of which passed mere hours or days before the pro-gram would have lapsed, it is long past time for Congress to pass a long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program. Families and businesses across the country that rely on NFIP de-serve this stability.

The bill that passed unanimously by the Financial Services Com-mittee achieves some very important reforms. It prioritizes mitiga-tion and improves the mapping process. It includes common sense affordability measures like allowing monthly payments and protect-ing people’s rates if they choose to go to a private plan but want to come back to NFIP at a later date. It eliminates costly surcharges for policyholders. It doesn’t include any rate or fee hikes on policy-holders. And importantly, it reauthorizes the program for five years.

The fact that Republicans and Democrats in the House have been able to come together in a bipartisan fashion to move forward on a bill that provides long-term certainty for policyholders and makes key reforms is a significant accomplishment, and I applaud Chairwoman Waters and Ranking Member McHenry for leading the charge.

Combating Democrats' March Toward ImpeachmentEarlier this week, Democrats voted to pass H.Res. 430, the Pres-

idential Harassment Resolution, which authorizes Speaker Nan-cy Pelosi to initiate or intervene in judicial proceedings to enforce certain subpoenas. Democrats clearly won’t be deterred from im-peachment and will authorize any means for Congressional com-mittees to harass President Trump. This vote is an unprecedented consolidation of power. Speaker Pelosi will have authority to bypass the traditional House subpoena process and bring President Trump and administration officials to court on behalf of the entire House. Members deserve a voice in these matters.

The American people aren’t interested in mock impeachment hearings or relitigating witch hunts. We have a southern border cri-sis to address, a domestic economy to strengthen, and national security threats abroad to stabilize. Speaker Pelosi’s rhetoric about putting the President in jail is irresponsible, as is her leadership team’s talk of initiating impeachment without evidence to justify it. Democrats need to do their job and focus on improving the every-day lives of all Americans.

It is an honor to represent you in Congress. For more information please visit my website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.

God Bless, Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip

New Orleans Walmart Stores and Sam’s Clubs To Raise Money For Children’s Hospital New Orlean

All New Orleans Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs kick off this year’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) fund-raising campaign to help treat local children who are sick or injured. All money raised during the New Orleans CMN Hospitals campaign directly benefits Children’s Hospital New Orleans to fund critical treatments, pediatric medical equipment, research and charitable care. The Walmart - Sam’s Club CMN Hospitals campaign runs from June 10 through July 7.

“Year after year, we are delighted to see our associates and cus-tomers band together to help CMN Hospitals provide funds for children in need,” said Lacey McGuire, Walmart market manager for New Orleans. “Due to their unwavering passion and dedication to the cause, Children’s Hospital New Orleans can ensure the chil-dren of our community will receive the best possible medical care.”

To date, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, members and cus-tomers in New Orleans have raised more than $6 million for Chil-dren’s Hospital New Orleans, most of it one dollar at a time. On a national level, Walmart and Sam’s Club have raised more than $1 billion for CMN Hospitals; according to Engaged for Good, this is largest cash amount ever raised by one company for a nonprofit in North America.

The need is staggering – 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network hospital for treatment every minute. Helping these chil-dren is easy, here’s how to participate:

• Donate $1 or more at the checkout lane or self-checkout of any New Orleans Walmart store or Sam’s Club

• Spread the word and encourage others to support the CMN Hospitals campaign via social media with custom CMN Gifs and the hashtag #HelpKidsLiveBetter

Through the leadership of Sam Walton, Walmart and Sam’s Club joined the CMN Hospitals fundraising family in 1987. This annual fundraising campaign supports Walmart’s core belief of leveraging the company’s strength to give back to local communities.

St. Bernard Parish Library Summer Reading Program Moves Into Weeks 4 and 5

Summer readers are asked to report to the transporter room to be beamed to the St. Bernard Parish Library, located at 2600 Palmisano Blvd. in Chalmette, for some ex-citing programs taking place during the 4th and 5th weeks of summer reading. Alien life forms will dominate the ‘Greetings, Earth-lings’ story craft program taking place on Tuesday, June 25th at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and again on Wednesday, June 26th at 11 a.m. Summer readers will hear stories about

little green men, flying saucers and under-wear when we read Aliens Love Underpants by Clair Freedman and Ben Cort. Everyone will make their own balloon alien to take home. Our journey throughout the universe continues when our readers take a shuttlec-raft down to the lunar surface for the ‘Moon Madness’ story craft event set for Tuesday, July 2nd at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and also on Wednesday, July 3rd at 11 a.m. Is the moon really made of cheese? Does a man really live inside the moon? These questions and more will be answered at this free story craft program. All ages are welcome and all craft materials will be provided.

All astronauts need a little down time to enjoy some of the finer things in life such as art, music and puppetry. The library’s sec-ond Teen and Tween program is scheduled for Thursday, June 27th at 11:30 a.m. Car-los Nieto III is back by popular demad to present another Anime Your Way drawing workshop. Budding artists will learn how to create and modify an anime character from scratch, no matter what their drawing level is! Participants in this free program must be 9 years of age or older to attend. All materi-als will be provided.

New Orleans has many shining star art-ists and we are lucky to have two of them visit the library as part of its Summer with

the Arts series. We will countdown to June 28th when award-winning musician and author, Johnette Downing, splashes down at 3 p.m. Audience members will be launched into songs, stories and laughs during Johnette’s free hour-long concert. Johnette’s books and CDs will be available for purchase following the performance.

Our second local artist is Uncle Wayne Daigrepont of Porta-Puppet Players. Un-cle Wayne will bring his friend, Indie Pendants, to the library to contin-ue the 4th of July cel-ebration with his origi-nal puppet show, Star Spangled Banter. Show time is on Friday, July 5th at 3 p.m.

All of the library’s Summer with the Arts performances family friendly are made pos-sible by a grant from the Louisiana Division

of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, and as administered by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs, St. Tammany Parish Government. Funding has also been provided by the Na-tional Endowment for the Arts, Art Works as well as donations by Arlette and Wayne Nunez with matching funds from Shell Oil’s Gift Program.

Readers of all ages are reminded of ac-tivity sheet deadlines. Pre-Readers through 12th graders who plan on attending their respective prize drawings must have their activity sheets turned in by Thursday, July 11th. Late entries will not be accepted. Prize drawings are set for Friday, July 12th at 3 p.m. for Pre-Readers through 5th grad-ers and Saturday, July 13th at 11:30 a.m. for 6th through 12th graders. Winners must be present at their drawings to claim their prize. Adults have until Saturday, August 3rd to complete their activity sheets to be entered into the Tuesday, August 6th draw-ing. Adult winners will be notified by phone. Prizes had been donated by the following sponsors: Audubon Institute, Chalmette Movies, Coffee House of Arabi & Nunez, Crave Bar and Grill, Facials by Skin Diva, Infinity Science Center, Kiwanis, Louisiana Children’s Museum, McDonalds of St. Ber-nard, National World War II Museum, New Orleans Paddlewheels/Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours, PJ’s Coffee, Raising Cane’s Chick-en Fingers, Splash Express Car Wash, and Wow’s Cafe’ & Wingery.

Historical Signing Between Nunez & Delgado

Paris Road Clean Up Project

Monday, June 17, 2019, Nunez Community College (Nunez) and Delgado Community College (DCC) entered into an agree-ment establishing a transferable pathway for Nunez students to transfer coursework and complete an Associate of Applied Sci-ence in Veterinary Technology, Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Technology or an Associate of Applied Science in Ra-diologic Technology and for DCC students to transfer coursework to complete Associate of Applied Science in Process Technolo-gy or Associate of Applied Science in Aerospace Manufacturing Technology.

St. Bernard Parish Government and the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office partnered to clean up Paris Road from the parish line to Virtue Street in Chalmette.

Parish President Guy McInnis stated “this project is part of a parish wide effort to remove debris and trash on parish high-ways and canals.” The clean-up project was coordinated by Par-ish President Guy McInnis, Sheriff James Pohlmann and Road Manager Louis Pomes. Parish Government workers and Sheriff’s Office trustees cleaned the parish right-of-ways on the east and west sides of Paris Road. The project included trash and debris removal, grass cutting, tree trimming, and street sweeping. Crews also cleaned ditches and drainage canal along the thoroughfare.

“I am happy to partner with President McInnis and his staff to beautify a major entrance to our parish,” said Sheriff James Pohl-mann. President McInnis would like to encourage business own-ers and residents to continue taking pride in the community by helping keep our Parish clean.

KIWANIS KORNER

Submitted by Michael Chutz The St. Bernard Kiwanis Club Meeting on May 21, 2019 had St.

Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office Sergeant Chris Scheeler and Cap-tain Stephen Ingargiola with the Special Operation and Training Division. Both men are bomb disposal certified through the FBI. The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office had 4 of only 75 certified bomb disposal operators in the state of Louisiana. They brought their robot, did a demo on its use and picked up our Kiwanis Bell. They spoke on the history of the Bomb Squad, the robot and some of the projects they have worked on. This is an incredible resource the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office has which impressed all in atten-dance at the meeting knowing that all the major training, retraining and the robot is paid by the federal government. Thank you SBSO for all that you do for St. Bernard Parish and Louisiana. God bless those who serve others.

Thomas Perrin RicheThomas “Tom” Perrin Riche passed away on

Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at the age of 56. He was the middle of three sons born to the late Claude Ber-nard Riche and Kay Lynn Connor Riche of Violet, Louisiana. He is survived by his brothers and sis-ter-in-law, Stephen Gerard, Christopher Connor, and Jamie Marie. His youngest sibling, Claudia, died in infancy from the complications of her pre-mature birth. Tom is mourned by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as a

circle of friends that extends from St. Bernard to Covington and all the way to Montana and Washington State!

Tom was a simple, sincerely religious man who loved Jesus, the Blessed Mother and his Catholic faith, cared deeply, and did his best to understand a world that often frustrated him with its complexity. As a youngster, he enjoyed watching pro wrestling and football with his dad and brothers, Sunday dinners at Grandmother’s, and taking in the Mardi Gras parades. After six years of hard work, Tom earned his high school diploma from Chalmette High School and received a standing ovation from his graduating class.

Life after Katrina was harder for Tom; the storm dispersed many of the people he knew and destroyed many of the places he had built his routines around. He never fully recovered the support systems and pat-tern of activities he had before the storm. On a more positive note, the experiences Tom had after Katrina awakened a love of travel that would lead him to Helena, Montana and Seattle, Washington and even all the way to Venice, Rome, and the Vatican.

Although Tom was very frugal, he had a soft spot for hard luck stories, doing what he could for people who hit tough times. He was also quietly generous to charities that touched his heart. Throughout his life, Tom prayed every day, said the Rosary daily, attended Mass every Sunday and sometimes another two or three times a week. His loved ones are confident that he was spiritually prepared for his death and that he has been welcomed into heaven by his parents, family, and all the loved ones who have gone before.

Relatives and friends were invited to attend a visitation held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Praying of the Rosary began at 12:30 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. He was laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

Gloria Havron WyattGloria Havron Wyatt passed away on Wednes-

day, June 12, 2019 at the age of 88. Beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Henry Wyatt. Loving moth-er of Paul P. Wyatt, Michael A. Wyatt (Cindy) and William D. Wyatt. Daughter of the late Richard Patrick Wyatt and Maudia Bassett Wyatt. Sister of Margaret Havron Montiel, James Richard Hav-ron (Dorothy), Robert Vaughn Havron and the late Dorothy Havron McClary (Charles). Proud grand-mother of Jennifer and Garrason. Also survived by

many nieces and nephews and friends. Special thanks to her niece Pa-melea F. McClary for her love and support throughout the years.

Gloria was born on June 3, 1931 in Mobile, AL and was an avid Al-abama Crimson Tide fan. While she was very much a lady and never cursed she did enjoy gambling and playing slots with dad. She was always up for a trip to Vegas baby! She leaves great memories for us to cherish especially her ability to burn pork chops. Gloria will be forever remembered and deeply missed by her family, friends and all of those whose lives she touched.

Relatives and friends were invited to attend a visitation held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service began at 1:00 p.m. She was laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gar-dens.

St. Bernard Sheriff's Office Junior Deputy Academy kicks off fifth year

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Of-fice Junior Deputy Academy kicked off the fifth year of its annual summer program on June 4, Sheriff James Pohl-mann said.

Formed in 2015, the Junior Deputy Academy is open to children ages 10 to 13 who re-side in St. Bernard Parish.

Patterned after the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Acade-my for adults, the program is

designed to foster community pride and self esteem, while teaching youngsters about the various aspects of law enforce-ment.

The Academy, which runs two days a week through July 11, will include a visit to St. Bernard Parish Prison, fire-arms safety instruction at a lo-cal shooting range, basic first aid and CPR instruction and demonstrations with some of

the department’s state-of-the-art equipment. A graduation ceremony also will be held July 17.

During Week 1, Junior Depu-ty Academy participants spent time with deputies from the Field Operations Bureau's Pa-trol and Traffic Divisions, as well as the Special Investigations Division's Narcotics Division and Drug Abuse Resistance Education officers.

St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann speaks with Junior Deputy Academy participants on June 4 during the opening session of this year’s program.

Cpl. Terry Meyer, of the Field Operations Bureau's Traffic Divi-sion, shows Junior Deputy Academy participants how loud his motorcycle sounds.
