A MESSAGEFROM THEPRESIDENT.Welcome to another squash season, it is shaping up to be an exceptional one in British Columbia. BC has a number of excellent events happening in the 2012-13 season. For starters, in October World Squash Day will focus on the goal of getting squash into the 2020 Olympics. Clubs are challenged to hold competitions between teams. All of the scores will be added up to see which team can claim global supremacy. This will also show the International Olympic Committee the incredible amount of support that exists for squash around the world. For more information and to learn how to enter your scores, go to our web page and click on “World Squash Day – Be Part of the Action” in the “World Squash Day – Are you taking part in the Challenge?” article.

Speaking of 2020, the 2020 fund continues to grow thanks to donations from charity tournaments, individuals, groups and clubs. The first disbursements from the fund have been used to support Squash BC’s junior programs, especially grassroots programs to introduce the sport to a new generation of youngsters.

There is more exciting junior news. Sport Central will be hosting the Canadian Junior Championships in late April. The best juniors in Canada will be battling it out, so come watch some great squash by our future Canadian Stars and cheer on the kids from BC. BC has had strong showings the last few years and playing

on home soil will be a big advantage. And that’s just the beginning. Including the Junior Nationals, BC clubs will be hosting 3 National Championships. Victoria Squash Club will host the Canadian Women’s Team Championships January 4th to 6th and Vancouver Racquets Club will host the Canadian Master’s Team Championships January 18th to 20th.

The oldest international doubles squash tournament in the world (they play singles too) is coming to Vancouver. The 97th annual Lapham Grant Squash Tournament is coming to Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club in late April. The tournament has been in existence since 1922 and features top players from the

US and Canada playing for their countries to determine which claims squash superiority.

But you can do more than just watch amazing squash this season, join a league, a club ladder, enter a tournament, introduce a friend to our wonderful sport, volunteer at a tournament or join one of the many committees at your club or

Squash BC. Squash is a sport for life and one of the few sports where you are rewarded for thinking inside the box. BC has so many outstanding coaches, officials, clubs, and leagues that there truly is something for everyone.

So what are you waiting for?

I am excited about this next squash season and hope you are too.

Sincerely,Jon MoneyPresident, Squash BC

Most players in BC join Squash BC because they have to. Squash BC would like all members to think about what their membership really means to squash in BC.

Many players in BC have “supported” squash over the years and have not realized it. While joining Squash BC gives you many benefits, the support your membership offers squash are many. Your membership helps support programs like coaching and officiating, both of which keep the game growing and in control. Your membership also helps support junior programs in BC. The juniors have made tremendous strides in the last few years with a new and improved player development programs.

Supporting the organization of squash is something most people don’t think about. Organizing the tournament, coaching and officiating schedule is a huge job. Taking care of all the reporting to funding agencies takes time. Keeping the web site, newsletter and this Squash Book going is an ongoing project. Most leagues in BC, which are generally organized by volunteers, have had their work load cut by a tremendous amount with the

development of Quick Draws. Squash BC worked very closely with Quick Draws to develop all aspects of that program. There are many other behind the scenes activities which keep squash going in the province of BC that your membership supports.

One of the more important aspects of what your membership does for squash in BC is, you are counted. In this age of data, numbers do the talking. Sponsors of tournaments, leagues, junior program all want to know their message is being seen by many. Builders of facilities want to know their courts will be used. Funding agencies want to make sure they are helping the most people for every dollar they give. They all ask, “How Many Members are There?”

Just because you are not going to be playing league or tournaments this year doesn’t mean you should stop being a member. Your ongoing support of squash in BC will help the game to stay healthy and vibrant. For eleven cents a day, this can be accomplished.

Forbes magazine ranked squash No. 1 among the healthiest sports, with "convenience on its side:"30 minutes on the squash court provides an impressive cardio-respiratory workout". 400 calories are burned playing squash for 30 minutes.

More than 800 clubs representing 40,000 players registered to take part in the World Squash Day Challenge – Team Squash versus Team 2020 - which demonstrated global support for the sport’s 2020 Olympic bid.

A delighted World Squash Federation Chief Executive Andrew Shelley said: “It was wonderful to see the worldwide squash community come together in one massive match. It clearly illustrated the passion the whole sport has for squash’s Olympic

bid, as well as promoting squash at national and local level.

Almost 500 clubs and 25,000 players, from more than 70 different countries, so we feel justified in claiming the record for the world’s biggest competitive sports match on current figures alone.

THE 2020 FUND

9 The 2020 Fund The 2020 Fund 10

OUR MISSIONThe 2020 Fund was initiated by Squash BC to help build the future of squash in our province by providing a reliable source of funding for junior development programs.

As grants from external sources (government agencies etc.) become less and less predictable, it is important

that we protect the future of squash in British Columbia by having our own dependable source of funding.

OUR GOALOur initial goal was to raise $200,000 by the year 2020 (hence the name) at which point the Fund would begin to make distributions to Squash BC for the support of junior development programs. At this size, the Fund will provide annual distributions of about $8,000 which amounts to approximately 25% of the Squash BC budget for junior development. Now that we have reached our initial goal, we will grow the fund so that, together with other funding sources, it provides the level of financial support needed to achieve the objective of having programs that successfully broaden the base of junior squash players and develop their long-term interest in the game.

PROGRESS REPORTHaving surpassed the initial $200,000 target in June 2010, the fund currently sits at $240,000 and has distributed close to $15,000 to support junior development the past two years. Grass roots programs in Kelowna, Comox, Richmond, Vancouver, Shawnigan Lake and North Vancouver have all been supported by the 2020 Fund.

TO DONATEThe sport of squash has been a major influence in the lives of those who enjoy this wonderful game and, as evidenced by the strong support received so far, many of us want to put something back into it. The 2020 Fund offers the opportunity to do this by ensuring squash has a healthy future through well-funded development programs for juniors – the lifeblood of the game.

There are many ways in which donations can be made. Please visit the 2020 Fund website for more details and a direct link to our online donation site.

TAX RECEIPTSTax receipts are available for donations of $25 or more. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

19 BC’s Ranking System BC’s Ranking System 20

Tennis Industry Magazine, now called Racquet Sports Industry, has reported that squash is the only racquet sport that is growing in the United States, based on court construction and gear sales. Most U.S. players have a college degree, and by one's estimate more than half earn $100,000 U.S. annually, says the Chicago Tribune.

KING OF SPORTS

BC’S RANKING SYSTEMRanking systems in sport, not just squash are always a hotly debated topic. Everybody has a different opinion on what the best system is and most of them are probably right. A ranking system is like an opinion poll, the more data, the more accurate it will be.

Some of the different types of ranking system are a points based system, a single/double/triple jump system and a system where a player will gain so many points by making it to a certain stage in a tournament.

A points based system works by a player gaining or losing points based of the points spread between the two competing players. Most of these programs are loosely designed after the World Chess Federation ranking system. The main differences in programs that use this philosophy is the point spread where players gain or lose points and the amount of points they gain or lose within that point spread.

A jump based system is where a person has to beat one, two or three players ahead of them before they move up past the lowest ranked player they beat.

A system where players gain points by making it to a certain round in a tournament is fairly self-explanatory.

The ranking system used in BC is a points based system that is incorporated into the Quick Draws program. Within the Quick Draws program is a league management tool, a tournament draw making tool and the club ladder/box league tool. All of these tools will automatically put the results of matches into the ranking system. For example, two league teams play a match. After the match the captain of the home team will input the scores of the match into the league management tool and as that is done, the individual match results will automatically go into the provincial rankings. The tournament and ladder/box league tools work the same way. By using this type of method BC had just under 15,000 matches entered from July 2011 to June 2012. This amount of data will give us a very accurate ranking list.

Why do we have ranking lists?

The major reason sports use ranking lists is to seed competitions and as ONE of the criteria in picking teams and squads. While running a tournament, an organizer does not want the

number 1 and 2 seeds playing in the first round. To have a fair competition where the best two players in that competition meet in the final, an organizer will want those two players on opposite sides of the draw. Of course nothing is ever absolute in sport and athletes have good days and bad days so the number 1 and 2 don’t always make it to the final but that’s what make sport, sport.

Players also use rankings to determine how well they are playing within their squash community. The Quick Draws program has many different levels of ranking list. For instance, a player may be in 3 different lists, their club list, the inter club league list and the provincial list. Depending on where a players interest lies will depend on the list they go to.

For the most updated provincial ranking list, complete policies and more in-depth explanations on the ranking program in BC, please go to “Rankings” on the grey bar on the home page of www.squashbc.org. For league ranking go to “Leagues” on the grey bar and club ranking lists go to http://www.quick-draws.com

A BRIEF HISTORYOF SQUASH IN BC

23 A Brief History of Squash in BC A Brief History of Squash in BC 24

Squash has been played in BC since the early 1890’s. Squash was mainly played on private courts until the 1950’s and then clubs to the public started opening up. Squash in BC has undergone various changes in the type played. From 1890 till the 30’s the softball game or “English” game was played in BC. The USA took the game of squash and made a different version by using a narrower court and a hardball. When BC players started to travel to Seattle and Portland for competitions, BC players were at a distinct disadvantage. The hardball game was brought to BC and that was the only game played till the mid 70’s. By the 70’s squash was very popular in the world and if North America was going to compete on the world scene then they had to switch to the softball game or “International” game as it was now called. Canada switched fairly quickly, the USA, not so much.

When racquetball became a huge draw, many clubs were built and squash courts were added to building designs. During the 80’s is when squash had its largest growth. Players would start out playing racquetball but once they tried squash, many would convert. Since the 80’s squash has had a slower but steady growth.

Up until the mid-1970’s squash was loosely organized as a sport. Tournaments and leagues were

organized by individuals and since it was fairly small didn’t really need an organization. By the mid 70’s there were many more clubs and players and Squash BC was started up to organize squash on a provincial basis. Squash BC was originally called the BC Squash Racquets Association and that is still our legal name today.

The original intent of Squash BC was to organize squash within British Columbia. This included tournaments, leagues, junior programs, and to work with other like-minded organizations in Canada and the USA. The original business of Squash BC hasn’t changed but we have added to our work load. Throughout this book you’ll find that Squash BC is part of most squash activities in the province. Some activities we do more than others. Leagues and tournaments are mostly organized by local or regional groups. Squash BC does provide very inexpensive liability/accident insurance, rankings and league/tournament organization software to make running these events much easier.

Clubs and leagues in BC are the backbone of squash in BC. Without clubs, leagues and Squash BC all working together to organize and promote squash to the populace of BC, there would be very little squash played in BC. Clubs do many different things for squash from organizing lessons to teach

new players how to play and upgrade existing skills, junior programs, ladders / box leagues, tournaments and social events. Leagues will organize the players from clubs so they can play a competitive match against players from other clubs and Squash BC provides the tools for clubs and leagues to do these things. Squash BC will then take the players, both junior and adult and provide them with opportunities to play at higher competitive levels. Squash BC will also work with Squash Canada so BC players can go on to play at a national and international level.

Squash has come a long way in BC since the 1890’s. We probably have close to 200 facilities in BC that have squash courts. From apartment buildings and condos, recreation centers and fitness gyms to the privately owned country clubs, there will be a squash court near you.

Play squash, get in and stay in shape and have fun.

31 Programs to Promote Squash in Faciilites & Clubs Programs to Promote Squash in Faciilites & Clubs 32

PROGRAMS TOPROMOTE SQUASH IN FACILITIES & CLUBSThroughout the 100 plus years squash has been played in BC, there have been some tried and true methods/tools/programs to run in facilities/clubs in order to promote the sport of squash and to keep squash players interested. Squash BC advises all facilities/clubs to organize at least some of the following to keep their members/customers happy and willing to keep coming back.

Squash Promoter/ProfessionalAll successful clubs have someone promoting, teaching, organizing and marketing squash to the members. This person we will call the “Pro.” The Pro may be a volunteer or paid staff. Most paid Pro’s should be, at a minimum certified Level 2 coach and working on their Level 3. A Pro will give lessons, organize box and inter-city leagues, run tournaments and most important, keep your players active. Volunteer Pro’s aren’t necessarily a certified coach just somebody who is willing to organize squash in a club on their own time and usually their own way. Many clubs rely on this type of Pro to promote squash in their facility. Depending on the amount of drive and volunteer time this Pro has will determine the success of the squash programs within that club.

The average squash member may spend 80% of their time in a club without the need of a pro. The other 20% of the time is what will keep a club interesting, dynamic, and a good place to be for your members.

Club Night & Challenge CourtThese two things are very important for any club. They give new members a chance to meet other members in your club. Club nights are usually one night a week events that is frequently an all comers type night. The club will book off a number of courts and people will show up and play each other one game or maybe best two out of three, then they may play somebody else. After their matches, they will probably have a few healthy beverages in your members lounge. A Challenge court is a little different in that one court is usually not able to be booked by members so people can just arrive and get a challenge match with whoever is around.

Box LeaguesBox leagues are for members who sign up for a little more competition. These are usually a round robin format of 5 players. They will have a month in which to play their matches. They will phone up

their opponents and set up their own time to play these matches. If they win their box they will go up a box and if they lose, they will go down. This is a very good way for members to meet other members of their own caliber.

Inter-Club League TeamsMany areas in the province have inter-club league. This is an excellent way to get a competitive match in once a week for your busy members. After teams play their matches, they will head to the members lounge for food and beverages and to discuss the state of affairs in squash and the world. Many of these

players previously played tournaments but now can’t afford the time to spend all weekend at an event. League gives them a competitive match and a time to socialize with other squash players.

Club TournamentOnce a year most clubs will have a club tournament. This determines the club champion. These events will culminate in a social function that will bring your members of all calibers together.

Provincial TournamentThese events will be a larger undertaking for a club to host. Squash players from around the province are invited to play in a tournament in your club. The squash pro or a very experienced volunteer will usually form a tournament committee to run this event.

Squash players need to have the opportunities to achieve their maximum level of success. Most squash players will improve to and play at a level where they are most comfortable, and find success at. The Squash BC sport model allows players these opportunities from the beginning player to a professional playing internationally. All the clubs in the province, Squash BC, and Squash Canada play a vital role in ensuring that squash players have the ability to achieve their maximum potential.Junior ProgramS:Junior programs play a vital role in producing future squash players and elite players of our sport. Many clubs run junior programs and gain family memberships. Squash is a great sport for parents to play with their kids. All successful sports have successful junior programs which teach the game to kids when they are most able to learn. These kids may drop out of squash for a period of time but they will usually come back to the sport later in life and usually to the club where they learned to play the game since that is “their club.”

Skill Awards ProgramThis program uses badges to mark the progress in squash player’s improvement. It is usually used for juniors but adults may find it fun as well.

Because of its global reach, squash is well suited to business travellers. "It's a very cerebral game - it's akin to chess," says Chicago neurobiologist Dr. Sangram Sisodia, who learned to play the game as a child in India. As a researcher of Alzheimer’s disease, adds the Tribune, he firmly believes in increasing blood flow to the brain through such exertion. "Squash has beneficial aspects physically, mentally and emotionally."

KING OF SPORTS

PROGRAMSRUN BY SQUASH BCThe following is synopses of programs run by Squash BC which is the next step for athletes to move through the system from the clubs to international play. For full descriptions of programs go to www.squashbc.org and click on “Juniors” on the grey bar.

Junior Provincial & Regional Training SquadsThe Provincial and Regional Training Squads Sub-Committee’s (comprised of parents and Coaches) ultimately decides which athletes will be invited to participate in the programs/camps. Program selection will be performed through a transparent process ensuring all selection criteria are openly communicated to the parties involved.

These programs/camps give the junior athletes: The opportunity to train with other athletes they don’t normally have the opportunity to train with a measuring stick to see the extra work that is needed to get to the next level and the confidence and motivation to work hard to reach the next level. There are also opportunities to get to know their peers better and build lifelong relationships and a chance to train with different coaches, several of whom coach or have coached our national teams. Younger players are given a small taste of travel and billeting.

Athletes will be chosen through a combination of Provincial rankings and input from squash professionals and local club coordinators.

Grassroots Junior ProgramThe Grassroots Junior Program is funded by the 2020 Fund. Squash BC in the years 2000 to 2010 raised $200,000.00 as the capital for the grants that will be given out on an annual basis.

The Grassroots Programs/Camps will be organized by the clubs/associations as they have the best access to Grassroots players. Squash BC will subsidize programs/camps with a 50% subsidy of the program/camp budget or to a maximum of $1000.00. Grassroots programs/camps must involve athletes who are not on the Squash BC Junior Ranking list.

Canada Winter Games ProgramEvery four years, the Canada Winter Games (CWG) is hosted by a different city within Canada usually in February. The CWG represents the pinnacle of sporting competition for many athletes in Canada and has been used numerous times as a springboard to International and Olympic level competition. For more information on the Canada Games, please visit their website at www.canadagames.ca.

School ProgramMany Clubs have schools in their vicinity that may be willing to come to the club and expose their students to extra sports. Most of these schools are usually High Schools who have students who can drive to the club. This is an excellent way to introduce young people to your club and the game of squash.

U23/Post-Secondary ProgramLike the school program, many clubs have some form of Post-Secondary institution near the club. Many clubs will run a post-secondary program on a Friday or Saturday night from 6 pm till 9 pm. There will usually be a social component to this program as it is the weekend. Squash BC helps organize the BC University Championships where a number of students gain the opportunity

to be subsidized to attend the Canadian University Championships. Historically squash players have first picked up a racquet when they were attending university/college. It is with this in mind that we need to introduce these young people to the game of squash.

Instant Squash Program This program is set up to give new players to the game a chance to take some lessons, receive some squash equipment, be able to start playing safely and have some fun. Most of the equipment suppliers in BC will provide a package for the equipment depending on your desired needs. This program can be designed to fit any clubs needs in promoting the game of squash to its new members.

A call to junior athletes has been sent out in July 2012 to athletes who will be U19 and U17 in February 2015. Starting in the fall of 2012, athletes will be assessed and invited to be part of the Squash BC CWG training Squad. There will be approximately 24 juniors invited in the initial year and the squad will be decreased till there will be a team of 8, 4boys and 4 girls with 2 boys and 2 girls as alternates.

The Gudewill Travel Fund ProgramThe Gudewill family has generously donated funds over the years to help juniors travel to out of province junior tournaments. The amount athletes receive depends on how well they do at the 3 main national tournaments, Alberta Jesters, Canadian Junior Open and the Canadian Junior Closed. Athlete results are kept for all 3 tournaments with a win in the main round being worth 1 point, a win in the silver round worth 0.5 points and a win in the bronze worth 0.25. The athletes are then compared with one

another and the funding is dispersed. Thank you to the Gudewill family. In Province Youth Travel FundingIn the years where Squash BC receives funding from the BC Government for youth travel, this program will come into effect. Athletes who are participating in Squash BC Junior programs like the Provincial and Regional Development Programs may apply for this funding.

External Sport Credits for High School StudentsThe External Sport Credentials Program (ESCP) gives students the opportunity to earn graduation credits for approved levels of competition as an athlete within squash in these categories:Athlete (10, 11, 12)

The Ministry of Education is responsible for the External Credentials program and the Sport Credits Portion of this program is administered and monitored by the Sport and Recreation Branch of the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport.

The full descriptions of these programs can be found at www.squashbc.org and click on “Leagues,” “Calendar,” “Doubles,” or “Player Dev,”

LeaguesThere are leagues throughout the province of British Columbia. These leagues are organized by local/regional committees that work with Squash BC but are at arm’s length when it comes to

running and organizing the leagues based on local/regional needs. Squash BC provides rankings, a league organization program, insurance and other support for league organizers. Almost all leagues are volunteer run. The areas where leagues are run are Revelstoke League, Okanagan Squash League, Fraser Valley Squash League, Vancouver Squash League, Victoria Squash League, Comox Valley Squash

PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES

League. For further information on leagues, please visit our web site.

TournamentsSquash BC organizes the Calendar of Events every year for the squash players of BC. There are approximately 50 sanctioned tournaments throughout the province every year and these are organized by Pro’s and volunteers in Member Clubs. There are a myriad of different types of tournaments. They can be junior, team, masters, or all inclusive tournaments which include all age groups and genders playing against one another. These tournaments will be different categories and levels, Regional, Provincial, National and International. On the Calendar of Events there is a “Rating” column where Squash BC uses letters to denote the importance of the tournaments. More letters will indicate more ranking points for wins/losses within that tournament and more benefits received as in souvenirs, food offered etc.

Doubles Leagues/TournamentsThe Doubles Committee is responsible for promoting and furthering the game of doubles squash in all facilities with a doubles court in B.C. The program is responsible for organization and development of City League in Vancouver and help with the scheduling of doubles tournaments throughout the year. The program shall promote and encourage the development of doubles squash players at all skill levels and ages through the professional and volunteer coaches at member clubs. In the year 2012-13, club with doubles courts are, Hollyburn Country Club, Evergreen Squash Club, Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club, Vancouver

Racquets Club and Sports Central.Canadian Masters Team Championships The Canadian Masters Team Championships are to be held on the second/third weekend of January of each year. Each team will consist of 4 men and 3 women. The men will have a 40+, 45+, 50+ & 55+ and the Women have a 40+, 45+ & 50+. (Teams may have 2 men 45+ but not 2 40+) Selection for the team is based on rankings and Squash BC will send out a notice in October to start to make the team up.

Canadian Men’s & Women’s Team Championships The Canadian Men’s and Women’s Teams will be held on the first weekend in January after New Years. The BC Men’s and Women’s teams will consist of the best 3 players of each gender we can field. An alternate will also be chosen for the teams should any player become injured or unable to play before the events. Selection for the teams is based on rankings and Squash BC will send out a notice in October to start to make the team up.

U23/Post-Secondary ProgramThe U23/Post-Secondary Squash Program has been developed throughout Canada as a program that will partner Post-Secondary Institutions with local clubs, Squash BC and Squash Canada. The program is primarily a grassroots initiative to promote squash to Post Secondary students as a life time sport. Squash BC has been subsidizing a BC University Championships within BC and from that Championships subsidize a number of athletes to travel to the Canadian University Championships.

OFFICIATINGPROGRAMSThe rules of squash are probably the most talked about subject in squash. If we were to think logically about this topic, we would come to the conclusion that 50% of our competitive players should be certified officials. 50% of the players in a match will have to referee the next match!!!

Squash BC is part of a nation wide officiating program that has been set up and maintained for many years by Squash Canada and all member provinces like Squash BC. Part of your membership dues will go to the running of this program. Course conductors are constantly being trained. Officials are being assessed in all parts of Canada. New and old officials in the program have to be tracked so we know what level they are and what level of play they are qualified to do.

Squash BC runs two types of officiating clinics throughout the year. The Mini Rules Clinic is for players who have no wish to become a certified official but know they have to learn the rules in order to play the game. This clinic runs for one to two hours, (depending on the questions asked,) and can usually be done in an evening session. It will cover most everything you will need to know in order to referee a game after you win and what you are entitled to ask for as a player.

The second type of course is to become certified as an official. This is a bit longer process as there are a few more steps involved. The first part is a PowerPoint presentation that goes through the various aspects of an official’s job. This will cover everything from the proper way of keeping score through how to decide strokes and lets. After this presentation there will be a 40 question written test and then a practical test where you will be assessed officiating a match. A Provincial Examiner will deliver all of these components to becoming a certified official. Theses steps do not have to be done on the same day but it makes it a lot easier if you do. The length of this course will be four to five hours and is usually done on a weekend.

For a list of certified officials in BC please go to www.squashbc.org and “Officiating” in the grey bar.

Coaching In British Columbia.Squash BC has always maintained that every squash player deserves the best coach possible. We were one of the first sports to say coaches must be credible and certified at the level they are coaching. We have used the National Coaching Certification Program, (NCCP) as a cornerstone to achieving this goal. For a complete list of coaches who have taken courses and who has attained certification, please go to

www.squashbc.org and click on “Coaching” in the grey bar.

Coaching in BC and Canada is undergoing a change in the way coaches are taught how to coach and how they will be evaluated to become certified. . Key to these changes is a shift in emphasis from “what a coach knows” to “what a coach can do.” In the new, competency-based system, training and certification programs are based on the clearly defined needs of participants.

There are two streams of coaches, the Instruction Stream and the Competition Stream. The Instruction Stream is for volunteer coaches who want to help out with the local junior program. The Competition Stream is for coaches who wish to move on to coach higher level athletes or become a club professional.

There are two courses coaches have to take to become certified. The first course most people take will be a weekend course that will go through the steps of teaching players how to play squash. These courses start with the basics of hitting forehands, backhands and simple strategy to advanced strokes and strategy.

The other course is a theory course or a multi-sport module. These courses are offered around the province at various times during the year at local colleges

and recreation centres. The courses cover topics such as planning, nutrition, fitness training, ethics in sport, etc. You can take this course by correspondence if you can’t make a course in your area. (Once you pass a multi-sport module you will be able to use it for other sports as well.)

For more information and a schedule of the multi-sport module, go to www.coaches.bc.ca.

After the first theory course or for coaches in the old system who want to upgrade to the next level, coaches must take and pass the online “Making Ethical Decisions” test on the Coaching Association of Canada’s web site. Go to the link on the right side of this page. www.coach.ca.

The next step would to be evaluated giving instruction to a player at the appropriate level by a course facilitator and graded on your knowledge and ability to pass it on. After this you will be certified at this level and be able to move on to the next higher level.

SQUASH BC’S ANNUAL AWARDSThe Marketing and Communications program within Squash BC encompasses many areas. One of the areas that Squash BC works very hard to maintain is the “Awards” section. Every year Squash BC hands out awards to deserving individuals, such as those following, who have shown excellence in volunteering, sportsmanship and athletic ability. Recipients of the Squash BC Awards for 2011-12 are

The Jack Larsen Award

Dan Lindsay of Courtenay is the recipient of the 2012 Squash BC Jack Larsen Trophy for service to squash in BC. In the

words of his nominators, “Dan has almost singlehandedly managed tournaments, leagues and social events that helped grow the league in the Comox Valley to be one of increasing health and popularity. He works hard to ensure that we are organized and personally backed coaching and refereeing clinics to improve referee and player knowledge and capability. He has been instrumental in helping the junior program and endorsing the school involvement in that program which has been very successful. He has been key to the growth and maintenance of the Comox Valley Squash Club including communicating the needs with city planners in our quest to upgrade the facility. He is without a doubt deserving of this recognition”.John Roche, Past President of Squash BC, was present at the dinner on Saturday night of the annual Easter Bunny tournament to present the award. When John announced that Dan was the recipient of the award, the audience of about 100 squash players instantly leapt to their feet and gave Dan a well deserved extended standing ovation. When calls of “speech, speech” rang out, he was truly taken aback and speechless, a rare moment indeed!! Congratulations, Dan.

The Presidents PlateThe Presidents Plate was presented to Vancouver Racquets Club for their support of squash over the years. VRC has in the past year volunteered courts to the Coastal Squash program which is a squash and education program for the inner city kids in Vancouver. VRC has also been a very good landlord to Squash BC over the past 9 years and has always been a consistent advertiser within the Squash BC web site and the Squash Book. Owen Smith, the president of VRC accepted the award on behalf of VRC. Thank you VRC and congratulations.

The Ernie Rogers Bowl

After 3 years of hard training, Squash

BC’s Canada Winter Games teams brought home the hardware. We are very proud of what our junior players have accomplished and next time you see any of them you should give them a hearty congratulations.

The girl’s team comprising of Abby Foster (shown here with coach Jeff Boag), Nicole Bunyan, Brynn Daniels and Lindsay Seginson brought home the GOLD MEDAL with a 2 point victory over Ontario. For those of you who don’t understand how close this was, after 4 matches the teams were tied in matches won, 2 all. They were also tied in games won so they had to count up the number of points won/lost for all four players. When you hear the adage that every point counts, now you know why.

Jeff Boag and Rebecca Vassilakakis spent many hours with the athletes in Halifax coaching, mentoring and chaperoning these athletes so they would have an experience to be remembered for a life time. Thank you Jeff and Rebecca.Once again, congratulations to the Squash BC CWG Girls Team.

The John Burris Memorial AwardThis year the John Burris Memorial Award was awarded to Mark O’Neill. People who have played Mark know that he is very sportsmanlike on court while being a competitor who doesn’t give an inch and will try with all his being. Mark is very deserving of this award, congratulations Mark.

The Massey Goolden Trophy The Massey Goolden Trophy is designated to honour junior players for achievement combined with sportsmanship.

This year the young woman who won showed these qualities in abundance. Abby Foster is one of the top ranked junior girls in the country and that she can combine that with being one of the most sportsmanlike players like is a great accomplishment.

Congratulations Abby for representing BC in such a positive light.

The Junior Service AwardThe Junior Service Award is presented to an individual who has unselfishly inspired, coached or mentored Junior squash players.

This year Brian McGaw is the recipient of the Junior Service Award. Brian has worked very hard organizing junior squash in the Victoria area and junior squash for Squash BC. Brian helps run the Shawnigan Lake Junior tournament and has organized the Provincial Training Camps for Squash BC. Brian is an integral part of the junior squash in BC. Thank you Brian for all your hard work.

The Ken Cummane AwardThe Ken Cummane Award for the “Club Challenge Winner” goes to the club/organization who donates the most to the 2020 Fund throughout the year. A club can raise funds using any legal method they wish. This year the award was won by the High Game held at the Arbutus Club. The High Game tournament over its 7 years has raised over $11,000.00. This year the amount was just over $2200.00. Squash BC would like to thank Allan Brown and Morley Jamison for all the work they have put into the High Game over the years.

Sport BC’s Presidents AwardSport BC’s annual “Presidents Awards” promote and celebrate the spirit of volunteerism by giving member organizations an opportunity to acknowledge and thank an individual

who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to their organization.Forty-four of BC’s key sport volunteers were in the spotlight at Sport BC’s 18th Annual Presidents’ Awards. The Presidents’ Awards give BC’s Provincial Sport Organizations an opportunity to showcase those individuals who make a significant, and often unheralded, contribution to their sport.

Paul Marley had a dream a number of years ago of bringing pro squash back to Vancouver. Seven years ago, he started with a small $5000 prize pot, where local squash fans were treated to seeing World Ranked PSA players in the 50-125 battle it out. It was the best squash many of us had seen in years.

This past January, we saw a half dozen of

the top 20 players in the world come to North Vancouver! The prize money has been raised from $30,000 in 2011 to $50,000 in 2012. That brings in the top players and makes the draw very competitive.

Paul serves as manager of the volunteer team that does everything from host and drive pro players, run an amateur tourney, install bleachers, get info about squash into the media, etc, etc.. How many hours does Paul volunteer on the tournament each year? We don’t know but it’s a lot.

Volunteer support is also very tough to come by these days, and the tournament was on the cusp on being cancelled two years ago because of the lack of volunteer support. However, Paul worked tirelessly in recruiting new blood to his committee, and the legacy lives on.Paul was asked why he does all this work year after year. He says, the game has been good to me and good for me. I just want to give back.Squash BC is honoured to award the Sport BC Presidents Award to Paul Marley.

Squash Canada’s Certificate of Achievement AwardThe 2011-12 Squash Canada Certificate of Achievement Award was presented to John Roche. John has been instrumental in organizing and promoting squash in Victoria, all of British Columbia and Canada. John started his volunteering in squash at his local club, Cedar Hill Squash Club in Victoria. He was then asked to become a zone rep for Squash BC and from there he became President

The Jesters were founded in England in 1929 by a schoolboy, Jock Burnett, who wished to encourage the playing of racquet sports. The Jesters in England play not just squash, but also tennis, real tennis, fives and racquets. There is an active fixture list in all these sports which are played against other clubs and schools.

The Jesters is now a worldwide organization of over 3,000 members, most of whom are squash players. There are members in all Canadian provinces. Members are elected locally by the membership and candidates are selected on the basis of playing ability, sportsmanship and contribution to the game of squash.

The BC Jesters meet on a social basis on a regular basis. We are actively involved with promoting junior squash, university play and host an annual doubles tournament.
