A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY

I have to say the Christmas holiday break is now a distant memory. Week two of term one nearly done and already I just want to slow things down a little so I can catch up. So often I hear people say they would just like to stop the world for a time because we can easily get overwhelmed with the things we want to do, need to do or dream of doing.

As you would have noticed Bike Ed has been running at the school this week mainly for the Year 5 students. This is a great program that educates students not only about how to ride safely on the road but also teaches them rider skills and ensuring their bike is road worthy and indeed how to wear a helmet correctly so it will actually protect them. Yesterday they left the safety of the hard courts and ventured into the nearby streets, hills and all. The students did a great job but I had the pleasure of staying back with a couple of students who weren’t quite ready for the road. Instead we did lots of practising on the hard courts.

One of the students went from having a number of stacks to riding constantly for 45 minutes, turning, weaving, signalling and stopping all while talking constantly. He did have one stack actually when he tried to swish a fly from his eye and things just got out of whack.

At one point, however, he said “now I know why my Dad wanted me to learn to ride; because it is so much fun”. For him the time was now right, he had practised, been patient and embraced the moments of training and now he could ride, so with continued practice he too will have his time on the road. I also had another student who was still finding her balance which is a hard one to teach. While she was a little tentative she was in there having a go, she showed persistence and determination and I showed how unfit I was trying to run alongside. While she felt she had made some progress, I felt disappointed with myself that I wasn’t able to help her more and it reminded me that even though we might be doing similar things we don’t all travel along at the same pace and achieve the same things. In a learning environment it is easy to compare oneself to others and then set unrealistic expectations but I was reminded today of the two phrases, ‘be me’ and ‘all in good time.’ So tomorrow I will have my sneakers on and we will try again.

THE MOUNT GAMBIER AND DISTRICT TERTIARY HEALTH EDUCATION GRANT The Mount Gambier and District Tertiary Health Education Grant program will provide 12 financial grants to local health students in 2019 and is now open for applications. The program supports city or district residents who are required to leave the region to undertake university studies in identified health skill shortage areas within the community. The program provides local students with a $2000 grant to help complete their tertiary studies within the health field. At the recent launch of the 2019 grants St Martins Old Scholars presented to the grant committee as they were grant recipients in 2018 . Vimbiso Chiodze said the financial support she received assisted her to meet the costs associated with her first year studying a Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery at the University of Adelaide.

Deakin University third year Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery student Alice Telford said the grant made it possible for her to continue to undertake work placements throughout Victoria in 2018.

WATTLE RANGE 2019 AUSTRALIAN DAY AWARDS FOR

SMLC STUDENTS SMLC were very proud of two students who were recently honoured as part of the Wattle Range Australia Day Awards, as Young Citizens of the Year.

SAM LINTON Sam Linton is a dedicated sportsman, passionate campaigner for CanTeen, referee and coach with Millicent United Soccer Club plus 2018 Millicent Lioness Club Youth of the Year. Three words have been used to describe Sam which are dedicated, resilient and compassionate. Since 2012 Sam has been involved with CanTeen. He lost his father in 2013 and has dedicated himself to promoting CanTeen and working hard at camps. Sam has been a CanTeen Mentor, Peer Support Volunteer and has now become a SA/NT CanTeen Leadership Team Member. He has been involved in multiple Bandana Days, Recreational Days, Summer & Winter Camps, Adventure Camp, Peer Support Camp and Road Raise Supporter. Sam has raised awareness about living with Cancer and the emotional and social impact that it can have on teens. He has spoken at school, at CanTeen events and at the Lions Youth of the Year Awards in an endeavour to reach young people who are faced with cancer themselves, or a sibling or parent so that they may not be 'on their own' and are aware of the services CanTeen can offer. Sam has put hard work and dedication into his work with CanTeen and wants to help others who are living with cancer. Sam also has a passion for sport and how access to sport can impact young people. Sam gained his Soccer Coaching and Referee License in 2016, at the age of 15. He has since been assistant under-12 coach at Millicent United Soccer club and also helped run the junior skills program over the past 3 years. Sam has identified several talented local players and encouraged them to try out for SAPSASA Soccer, Limestone Coast representatives at State and Country Championships and to tryout with Christian Football SA for Nationals. Sam recently returned from Valencia in Spain as Apprentice Coach for the Australian U19 team with Christian Football Federation Australia. Sam was the youngest member on tour and is very proud of his selection to Coach with the Australian Team at just 17 years of age.

UNIFORM It has been exciting starting the year with some new uniform

items upgrading our existing uniform. For secondary, we now

have new soft shell jackets (replacing the old yellow and navy

rain jackets), new sports jackets (replacing the yellow and navy

rugby jumpers) and new navy socks. Students may change to

these new items once they have outgrown their current uniform.

There is a two year change over period. The complete uniform

policy can be found on the website. We hope you will agree that

the uniform looks very neat. We would like to thank Tracy and

everyone who helps out in the uniform shop for all their efforts.

CARPARK Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding when

using our carpark. Coming into this space requires drivers and

pedestrian to be aware, take care and to stay calm and patient.

This week the morning business has cleared within 14 minutes

and the afternoon business has cleared within 13 minutes. This

is significant as it is a very small part of our day and by working

together and recognising the system we can make it work even

better.

Key things are that we are trying to manage what we call the hot

spot. This is that spot where cars are coming down to the

Library, out of the JP zone, exiting the carpark and pedestrians

are crossing.

What is working is if pedestrians cluster up and make bigger

groups to cross together rather than dribbles, keeping the library

zone full and taking turns around the different lanes. What is

also working is having someone help with all of the above.

What can you do to help – ensure that you use the top dual

lane driveways morning and afternoon, to get to the JP zone,

Library zone and the carpark by the hardcourts. Be patient and

thoughtful, help each other out.

For parents/guardians of students:

2019 Student Residential Address and Other Information collection notice

This notice is from the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the department), to advise you that the department has requested that your child’s school provide a statement of addresses, in accordance with the Australian Education Regulation 2013 (Cth) (Regulation).

A statement of addresses contains the following information about each student at the school:

Student residential address (not student names)

Student level of education (i.e. whether the student is a primary or secondary student)

Student boarding school status (i.e. whether the student is boarding or a day student)

Names and residential addresses of students’ parent(s) and/or guardian(s)

Schools generate a record number for each student for the purposes of this collection, which is also provided to the department.

Purpose of the collection

This collection is routinely used to inform Commonwealth school education policy, and to help ensure that Commonwealth funding arrangements for non-government schools are based on need, and are fair and transparent.

On 20 September 2018 the Government announced that it will implement a new, improved capacity to contribute methodology used in the calculation of the Commonwealth’s needs-based funding arrangements for non-government schools. This follows a review of the existing socio-economic status (SES) score methodology by the National School Resourcing Board. Further information about the review and the Government’s response can be found here: https://www.education.gov.au/review-socio-economic-status-ses-score-methodology.

The information collected in the statement of addresses will be used to refine the new capacity to contribute methodology and may also be used in school funding calculations from 2020.

Use and disclosure of personal information

Your personal information is protected by law, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Any use and disclosure of your personal information relating to the statement of addresses will occur in accordance with the Regulation.

Your personal information may be used by the department, or disclosed to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), for the purposes of SES score policy development, reviewing SES score methodology, calculating SES scores, Commonwealth school education policy development (including school funding), or where it is otherwise required or authorised by law.

For example, your personal information may be provided to the ABS for statistical and research purposes, which includes data integration projects such as the Multi-Agency Data Integration Project (MADIP). Further information on the MADIP can be found here:

http://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/D3310114.nsf/4a256353001af3ed4b2562bb00121564/9099c77cb979d558ca258198001b27a0/$FILE/MADIP%20iPIA_2018.pdf.

The department may, from time to time, carry out audits of school submissions. In the event of an audit, contracted auditors may seek to compare a school’s statement of addresses with student enrolment information held by the school. These contractors will not use the information for any other purpose.

The department may also be required to disclose your personal information to its service providers, including the Australian Government Department of Jobs and Small Business, for the purposes of the provision of information and communications technology (ICT) support services to the department.

What do you need to do?

You are not required to do anything. Your school is responsible for providing the requested details to the department, however, you may wish to ensure that your school has the most up-to-date and correct details for your family.

Contacts for further information

Your school can provide additional information about the process of the address collection.

If you have any further questions regarding the collection, you can contact the department by:
