Serving the Communities of Whyte Ridge & Linden Ridge The Spirit Winter 2014 PRESIDENTS REPORT 1 Things are continuing to progress smoothly for us at the club as we quickly move into the winter months. Our landscaping updates are almost complete with the native plants being the last component to be implemented. If you haven't had a chance yet, I encourage you to take a walk through the grounds and see what we have done, with updates to the paths, new trees planted, benches and our butterfly garden. I can't wait until Spring when we can see this all in full bloom. Thank you to all involved with this landscaping project. We continue to work with Harold Funk Architect Inc. on the feasibility study for the expansion of the club. We held our first workshop on October 4th, and thank you to those who came out and shared their ideas on the initial floor plans. It was very interesting hearing everyone's different thoughts and helped to move us to the next phase of this project. Plans are being revised based on this workshop as well as the survey responses, and they will be ready for a 2nd review on Dec 14th when we will be holding our next workshop at the club from 1-3pm. I hope you can make the time to drop in to this workshop and have your say and share your ideas. If you have not completed the survey yet and/or would like more information please visit our website www.whyteridge.ca or send me an email. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers that have come out and helped at the club this past year. Without the help of volunteers in the community we would be forced to close the club, and your help does not go unnoticed. I would also like to give a special thank you to all of the board members who have worked tirelessly this past year. We are all volunteers, most with full time jobs and families with children, and your commitment to the club has been and is greatly appreciated. On that note, we are still always looking for new and fresh faces as well as welcoming back previous volunteers to help out at the club, whether it be for a few hours for an event or as a board member. We have a great group of people who would love to meet you. If you would like more information on how you can contribute to the club please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. SITE DEVELOPMENT AND FUNDRAISING REPORT 1Hey Whyte Ridge! Here's the winter update on site development and

fundraising activities since my last report in the fall edition of The Spirit.

The fall months continued to be busy with building expansion plans andfinalizing components of the landscaping work. Please visit our website(http://whyteridge.ca/) for updates on site development, and make sure youfill out the survey to help guide the process. Here's an overview of whatwe've been up to since the last edition of the Spirit.

Landscaping

Hopefully you've had a chance to see the new landscaping work that hasnow been completed on the site, as discussed in my last article. J. RossProperty Maintenance and Landscaping Limited did the majority of workduring the week of September 14. This included installing new native treesaround the northern part of the site with new native shrubs/saplings,finishing the line of elm trees along the Cloverwood-side path, establishingthe butterfly garden in the centre of the property", and tidying up theexisting limestone pathway, including a resting spot. A bench has beeninstalled at the butterfly garden and hopefully by the time you read this thesecond bench will be installed at the resting spot.

Native Plant Solutions (NPS) started their work to establishing a new areaof native prairie grasses along the northeast side of the property, with roto-tilling the sod on September 10. It was interesting that as I took the picturesof this area a train chugged along the track, as a reminder about therelationship with trains and prairie grasses, as explained in a previousarticle. The photographs also show the existing tall grass prairie next to thetrain track in this area. Again, by the time you read this article NPS shouldhave replaced the soil in the flowerbed near Fleetwood.

The plans for next spring are to install a few more trees to the west of the westhockey pen and further naturalize the north end of the property. We'll also beadding more flowers to the butterfly garden and we'll be gearing up for the July 1Nature Manitoba garden tour. Whyte Ridge was selected as a destination for thetour next year and the group (apparently involving hundreds of members) willbe touring selected gardens in our Community, including the butterfly garden atthe Community Centre. Pressure's on to get it looking nice!

Next spring NPS will be seeding the flowerbed near Fleetwood withwildflowers and seeding the roto-tilled area with a mix of prairie grasses andflowers. In terms of stopping the mowing (which was preventing the grassesfrom growing this year), since the last article we've installed signage, haddiscussions with City staff, and had a site meeting with the foreman of themowing crew, and the situation seems to have been resolved. We did get concernsexpressed by a Resident about the prairie area increasing numbers of risks ofskunks and risks of rabies, and risks of wildfires and smoke if we conduct acontrolled burn. The City Naturalist has assured us that these risks are veryminor, and are outweighed by the benefits of creating an interesting area ofnatural habitat.

The plan over the next few months includes further meetings with provincialHistoric Resources Branch staff regarding developing the interpretive signs at theresting area (discussed in a previous article). I hope to apply for funds under theHeritage Grants Program to assist, so that we can develop and install these signsnext spring. Hopefully by the time you read this I have had a site meeting withthe new staff person at Trails Manitoba and we'll be on our way to having ourpathway recognized by the TransCanada Trails network.

Building Expansion MeetingDec 14, 1-3 pm

The second workshop will be held on December 14,from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Community Centre.

HFA will present a refined floor plan and elevationsshowing another level of detail, and will adjustspace planning to address the comments receivedin the October 1st open house, and any feedbackreceived via the website. Therefore it is important for you to review and weigh in on the variousoptions if you want to have input to this process.

Go to www.whyteridge.ca to review the materialsand click the Contact Us tab to either provide a

comment or email Nick directly [email protected].

Please try to attend the December 14 workshop,as this is where decisions will be made about whatthe building expansion project will look like.

And don’t forget the survey!

primary importance is the community survey, located on our website, as it iscritical that the new building integrate input from the Community. If you haven't filled it out, please do so as soon as you can. Based on a review of results as of the end of September, most respondents

(92%) were in favor of adding to/renovating the community centre. The majority have lived in the community for 5-15 years, with the main agegroups being primarily 30-55 and 5-15. Most (80%) are aware of the variousprograms currently available, through the newsletter, website or Facebook. Most (66%) drive to the community centre and most (46%) comeseasonally, for soccer games or hockey, with 20-30% visiting either weekly ormonthly. Approximately half of the respondents use other communitycenters, primarily for hockey, but most feel that community centre isconvenient for most activities.

The majority of survey respondents (60%) ranked currentprograms/events as “average”, with suggestions for improvements includinglarger indoor space, better washroom facilities, more programs, teen dropin/dances, and a splash pad.

In general, survey respondents rated the community centre as “average”for children, teens, and adults, and while there were few responses forseniors those that did felt it was poor to average. Most respondents indicatedthat they would like to see more indoor activities, such as soccer, basketball, dance, exercise, and martial arts. They indicated that in the past they usedthe community centre for skating, hockey, soccer, fitness classes, and socialevents such as birthday parties.

Half (52%) of the respondents thought the current building functionalitywas “average”, with suggestions for larger more comfortable indoor spaces. One respondent was concerned that the priority should be to try to getmore volunteers and make small changes before taking on a huge project. The majority of respondents (68%) also felt the existing facility was not veryvisible, very small, dated and shabby, with limited amenities that did notreflect the vibrant, bustling, upscale community. As indicated, mostrespondents (92%) were in favor of adding to/renovating the communitycentre. One respondent was concerned that having it too big might benegative and perhaps the focus should be on smaller improvements in theshort terms until there is more volunteer support.

Respondents suggested that there could be improved seating, play area fortoddlers/babies, renovated washrooms, larger indoor space, improvedheating in the winter, a bigger kitchen, and an improved loading area. Mostrespondents agreed that common/comfortable observation spaces wouldencourage people to stay longer (e.g., parents during children’s hockey andskate with Santa events).

The majority of respondents (75%) preferred changes to focus ondurable/easy maintenance interiors and natural looking exteriors. In termsof anticipated use of the new community centre, most respondentsindicated that it should be for hockey and soccer and fitness classes, followed by basketball, youth drop in and dance, then a day care and racquetsports, among others.

Based on reviewing these responses, a September 9 engineering siteassessment, research on zoning/by-law requirements andmeetings/discussions with Board members, HFA began to develop optionsfor building expansion.

One aspect discussed initially was the option of a field house. This wouldconsist of a large facility - likely similar to the indoor soccer facility at theuniversity of Manitoba (U of M). It would require removal of one of thesoccer fields - likely the north field, and would likely not be able to bephysically connected to the existing facility. Like the U of M facility it wouldservice a large area of Winnipeg. While this would generate significantrevenues, the general consensus was that this would be contrary to the spiritof the Community Centre, which focuses on providing opportunities forCommunity Residents to meet and enjoy sports and recreation activitiestogether. For these reasons this option was not carried forward in thefeasibility study, and the focus was on a gymnasium-based expansion.

75% of the respondents preferred changes to focus on durable/easy maintenance interiors and natural looking exteriors.

HFA noted that a substantial constraint to expansion is the presence ofthe transformer box immediately to the south of the existing building. This would likely be prohibitively expensive to relocate and basicallyremoves options to expand immediately to the north of the building. Plus, developments to the south at the main/Fleetwood entrance provideopportunities to create a fresh new face to the facility. Another constraint tothe expansion is the total size of the building. According to building code ifthe building size exceeds 17,200 square feet, it requires an expensivesprinkler system, or a firewall dividing it into smaller components. It mayalso require parking beyond the capacity of the existing space. In addition tohaving cost implications, it is likely that a community centre much biggerthan this would be bigger than most other community centres and createconcerns for the City in terms of equitably distributing sports andrecreation space across the City.

Based on this information HFA developed three concepts for buildingexpansion, as shown in the schematics. In addition to gymnasium space, new space was divided into general components that consisted of office,kitchen/bar, storage, washrooms and circulation/gathering. A required sizeof these types of space was based on research on what is typical/successful interms of functional area. The focus was then on how each of these spacesinteracted with one another, in terms of location, efficiency and aesthetics.

Option 1 has the gym on the east (train track) side of the property, with alarge open gathering area. The storage/kitchen/bar is joined to the gym withwashrooms/change rooms further away. Option 2 has the gym on the west(Cloverwood) side of the property, which creates a morecohesive/integrated, less linear facility, but requires the hockey pen to bemoved slightly north, with some adjustments to pen entrances (the optionto do something similar to the east pen was not pursued as this is asphaltedarea). Option 3 is similar to option 1, but with a smaller gathering area, andenclosure of the existing approach walkway.

These options were presented at the October 1 Community openhouse. In general, attendees all agreed that expanding the facility andbuilding a gymnasium is important. There was concern that thegymnasium should be expanded slightly to allow room for benches orareas for spectators. Preferences were split between option 1 and option3. Concerns were expressed with option 2, in terms of moving theexisting hockey rink and proximity to Cloverwood residents. It appearsthat some type of hybrid between option 1 and 2 might be the bestsolution, as some elements from both options were preferred. There wasinterest in having both the change rooms and kitchen/bar area directlyconnected to the gymnasium, and most participants seemed to like theidea of a central gathering hub to allow for visiting both before, afterand during events taking place throughout the community centre. The concept of having the boardroom doubling as a smaller multi-purpose space was also well received. There were some concerns aboutreducing the amount of corridor space due to supervision issues.Participants also raised the need to upgrade the interior of the existingbuilding as part of the expansion project, in terms of flooring, walls, etc.

The second workshop will be held on December 14, from 1:00 to 3:00 pmat the Community Centre. Communications Report 1While I’m writing this report, it’s warm outside and the fall

colored leaves have yet to completely fall. It’s hard to imaginethat by the time this is published, there will most likely be

snow on the ground and the holiday season fast approaching.

I started with the Board as the Communications Director in 2011 andhave once again taken on this role. I’d like to thank Ines who has done afantastic job over the past few years, as it’s easy to take over when it’s alreadyrunning smoothly. In the role of Communications Director, I correspondvia email with our fitness instructors, local schools, Board members, localorganizations, as well as members of the community and compile their

I update our website (using a program very similar toWord) but leave all the web technical work to our website guru. Thisposition is actually quite easy- if you have access to a computer, you can doit! As of April 2015, I will be resigning from the Board and am hoping that aresident of Whyte Ridge, Linden Ridge or Bridgewater will offer to join ourBoard as Communications Director. If you have any questions or areinterested, please email me at [email protected]

In other news, our new Programming initiatives have been showingsuccess. One of the highlights of the fall was our new RecreationalCheerleading program, which will once again be offered in the winter.

In addition, we offered a mobile My Gym program foryoung children, which took place and will continue todo so on Sunday mornings. Zumba, DownDAWG yogaand Bellyfit were also successful and will hopefullycontinue to grow over the winter. We have developed asolid core of Kickboxers, and hope more members ofour community come and try this program out as it’s agreat way to get a cardio workout while having a greattime punching and kicking pads. Our hip-hop danceprogram was also able to continue for the 2014-2015year and the small class sizes allows for great instruction. Our instructor, Jennifer, also teaches at the MarquisDance Academy, but our low price and small class sizemight have an advantage! If you are interested incoming aboard as Programming Director, feel free toemail me at [email protected]. With thecurrent programs almost running themselves, as well asroom for new growth, this is a very rewarding position.

With the holiday season and New Year approaching,we all think about new resolutions that we would like tomake: fitness goals, spending more time with familiesand many others. This year, I challenge you to make anew resolution- taking part in our community byvolunteering with the Whyte Ridge Community Centre, either as a Board member or simply volunteering at anevent. It’s a great way to meet people in the communityas well as to help make changes that you have beentalking about for years. Fall CarnivalThe Whyte Ridge Fall Carnival took place on September 7, 2014. We had

a great turn out on a beautiful fall day! The amazingly artistic face painters, balloon twisters, crafts and bouncer were a big hit with the many familiesthat came out for the afternoon. We also offered a Henna artist and somegames like tug-of-war, potato sack race and mini basketball hoop. Fun-KeyDucks provided musical entertainment - they got the little ones movingwith a lot of upbeat, fun songs. The Cheerleaders from HGI showcased theiramazing talent and inspired quite a few kids to try out some basic moves forroutines. We also had a display exhibiting the Community Centre’s SiteDevelopment plans for expansion and landscaping.

SPORTS Soccer ReportHi soccer enthusiasts,

The lovely October weather felt more like outdoor soccer season than the beginning of indoor season! But outdoor soccer is over and indoor soccer hasstarted. Congratulations to all Whyte Ridge outdoor teams on a great season andespecially to our 8 finalists and champions.

Whyte Ridge is hosting 11 teams for the indoor season. Thank you to our sponsors for keeping the registration costs manageable. Please try tosupport our platinum sponsor Linden Ridge Orthodontics and gold sponsorRanger Insurance whenever possible to recognize their contribution to oursoccer program.

Due to the rising popularity of soccer as a year round sport, we are fortunateto have the new University of Winnipeg indoor facility open this season. Finding practice space is still a challenge and we look forward to the expansion of our community centre to alleviate our reliance on school gym space withinthe division.

Finally we would like to thank all the volunteers who make the Whyte Ridgesoccer program successful. So many members of our community give their timeas conveners, coaches and equipment managers so that our children can have apositive soccer experience. We are always looking for interested and capablepeople to make the program better.

We are currently in need of volunteers for the following positions:

Soccer Director | Mini Soccer Director | U4 ConvenerU9 to U12 boys convener | U13 to U18 girls convener

Have a great indoor season!Pablo Szajt
