    MESSAGE FROM FATHER PHIL

“Cultivating Our Relationship with the Holy Spirit”

The whole liturgical period from Holy Pascha till the Sunday of Pentecost and ending with the Sunday of All Saints is about preparing for, encountering, and entering into a relationship with the Per-son of the Holy Spirit. In John 16:7 Jesus commented “it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” As underscoring our Lord’s words, the benefits of our receiving the Holy Spirit are substantial and advan-tageous to our spiritual growth. The help He conveys to us is essential for our spiritual growth. In the teachings of the holy church, the Holy Spirit is not considered an object, a created energy of God (as the Catholics wrongly surmise), but rather a person. Yes, the Holy Spirit is a Person who has a personality. He does not have a body for He is a spirit. Because He is a Person, one of the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity, it is possible to have an interpersonal relationship with Him. The relationship He offers us is inaugurated with the spiritual event of Holy Chrismation. When we are chrismated, we re-ceive the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. In this event we were filled with the Holy Spirit, He, literal-ly, took up residence in us. This is why St. Paul comments, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God?” (I Cor. 3:16) How does the Holy Spirit relate with us? We encounter the Holy Spirit in our spiritual center – the heart. More particularly, He communicates to us in our spirit and nous (spiritual mind of man not to be confused with the brain). God intended for our human knowledge that proceeds from the brain to submit to the higher knowledge of the nous. When this occurs we are guided by the Holy Spirit. What personal benefits do we derive from our relationship with the Person of the Holy Spirit? There are many. Jesus reveals in John 16:7, that the Holy Spirit is our Helper. He helps to live a life pleasing to the Holy Trinity. He knows that without this help, spiritual progress and salvation are not possible. He informs us when we are stepping out of line with God. He guides us into all truth (Jn. 16:13), He helps us to glorify God (v. 14). The Holy Spirit is also our Counselor; by this we are to understand that He consoles, comforts, renews and heals us. The benefits we derive from our relationship with the Holy Spirit are profound! In the Holy Scriptures, we encounter this expression – “in the Spirit”. What does it mean to be “in the Spirit”? Simply, it is the awareness of the Spirit’s Presence and communication. When this occurs one senses it; it leaves one with a deep peace, an unearthly joy, and the perception of a message that could only originate in Him. This particular truth or guidance He communicates to us makes a profound impression in our soul. It is like the proverbial light bulb being turned on in our mind. Oftentimes, it seems to occur without prior thought or provocation. Hence, every Orthodox Christian’s priority is to be “in the Spirit”. To be “out of the Spirit” is when we have wandered from God, lapse into sin, and live outside of His holy will. We must, always, be attentive to being “in the Spirit”.

  • 5

Another concept we encounter in the Holy Scriptures is the concept of “living in the Spirit”. By this we are to understand it to mean living with the constant awareness of the Holy Spirit’s Presence and activity in one’s life. Our aim is to cultivate this constant awareness of His Presence. We do this by par-ticipating reguarly in the sacramental life of the Church. Holy Confession and Holy Communion are es-sential if we hope to have this awareness.

In the theology of the Church, we are taught that the Holy Spirit, eternally, proceeds from the Father to us. This particular activity, is what constitutes the Personhood of the Holy Spirit. By this we are also to understand that because the procession is a constant activity, He is always coming to us. We have the opportunity to not only be His temple, but also the “focal point of His constant procession.

In closing, I wish you a blessed summer. May we use this time to cultivate our relationships with the Person of the Holy Spirit..

    In Christ,

    Fr. Phil

St. Katherine was honored by His Grace, Bishop Apostolos’ visit on Holy Thursday!

Bishop Apostolos celebrated the Holy Thursday Morning Hierarchal Liturgy of St Basil and was

with us for the evening Service of the Twelve Gospels.

    St. Irene Philoptochos Prayer Group

Philoptochos is a ministry of the church. As the philanthropic arm of the church St. Irene Ladies Philoptochos Society fulfills its mission to “help the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the

orphaned, the widowed, those with disabilities and the victims of disasters” not only by supporting our church, our parishioners in need and our community, but also by contributing to the National Office to make a positive

    difference locally, nationally and worldwide

“Do not let pass any opportunity to pray for anyone, either at his request or at the request of his relatives, friends, of those who esteem him, or of his acquaintances. The Lord looks favorably upon the prayer of our love, and up-on our boldness before him. Besides this, prayer for others is very beneficial to the one himself who prays for oth-ers; it purifies the heart, strengthens faith and hope in God, and enkindles our love for God and our neighbor. When praying, say thus: Lord, it is possible for Thee to do this or that for this servant of Thine; do this for him, for Thy name is the Merciful Love of Men and Almighty.” St. John of Kronstadt, My Life in Christ When we receive a prayer request, it is sent out to the group who have committed themselves to go as quickly as possible before their icons, light a candle or lamp and come before the Lord, the Theotokos, and our dear saints with the request that we have received. We also have agreed to keep these requests confidential unless the per-son requesting the prayers has given us permission to share with others. It is true what St. John says: that this prayer strengthens our faith and hope in God. This past year we have seen so many answers to our prayers. Would you like to join our e-mail St. Irene Prayer Group? You can send your request to join our group to the email below. If you have something you would like us to pray about don’t hesitate to ask! It is a privilege to pray for our brothers and sisters. No concern is too small! Please send your prayer requests to:

We invite you to bring your children ages 5-12 to our JOY/HOPE group which is held on the first Wednesday of each month September through May from 4:15 to 5:45. This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to strengthen their friendships and their faith. The children are grouped by age: 5-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds. While Fr. Phil meets with one group in the church teaching them about saints, feast days, Bible stories and many other related topics, the other group has time to play together, socialize and enjoy a complimentary meal together under parental supervision in the Community Center.

Parents are always invited and welcome to stay for the program and meal.

    Church Foods, Culture & Tradition

In this issue we will discuss the Artoklasia Service . In upcoming issues of the Spirit, we will include articles about other Church foods as well as interesting

aspects of our culture and traditions. Is there a topic you would like to see included on this page? Please email your suggestions and ideas to: office@st-

katherine.org for consideration in future issues.

    THE ARTOKLASIA SERVICE

(excerpt from A Guide to Greek Traditions and Customs In America by Marilyn Rouvelas, available for purchase in the Dean Pappas

    Memorial Bookstore)

The service of Artoklasia )breaking of bread) is both a gesture of thanksgiving for God’s blessings and a commemoration of the miracle of Christ’s

multiplying five loaves of bread to feed five thousand.

Five loaves of bread are baked and brought to the church, blessed, and distributed to the congregation in a short service of blessings and prayers

for health and prosperity. Bread, wine, olive oil, wheat and candles grace the table. The priest blesses the food, considered to be the basic ele-

ments necessary for life by the Greek Orthodox:

“Lord, Jesus Christ our God, You blessed the five loaves in the wilderness and from them five thousand men were filled. Bless now these

loaves (the wine, and oil) and multiply them in this holy church, this city, in the homes of those who celebrate today, and in Your whole

world. And sanctify Your faithful servants who partake of them.”

The congregation shares the bread, and the church keeps the remaining items. A church may hold an annual Artoklasia service on its name day.

Individuals or organizations may also sponsor an Artoklasia on special occasions. (To schedule an Artoklasia please see Fr. Phil)

    Items For The Service

Prior to the Divine Liturgy bring the following items for the

priest to arrange on a small table at the front of the Altar

Five loaves of bread (see recipe at right)

One bottle of sweet red wine, such as

    mavrodaphne

One small bottle of olive oil

List of living persons to be commemorated

How do I become an Altar Server?

A Look at Some of the Altar Servers.

Before we answer the question of the requirements to be an Altar Server, let's look at the roles of our Altar Servers in more depth. As I stated in the first article, Altar Servers serve. They assist the Priests in the Sanctuary (Altar). Through out this series of articles, I will be highlight-ing our Altar Servers. Saint Katherine's is blessed to have a great team of Al-tar Servers. This month we will highlight the "leadership team". The team Captain, Demetrios Kretsedemas, is the longest serving Altar Serv-er. He is the lead altar server. He cuts the Prosfora, tends to the censer, helps assign the other Servers for the rubrics (Altar Server actions on the Solea), assists the Priests at the Communion of the Faithful, and is a reader of the epistle. He helps to ensure the altar team runs smoothly. Thomas French, is our assistant Leader, and is second in seniority. He is also our Epistle Reader Trainer helping the other altar Servers learn to read the Epistle...rehearsing their reading to ensure the Epistle is read properly. Thom-as also assists in the cutting of the Prosfora, assists the Priests at the Commun-ion of the Faithful. He assists Demetrios. Both Demetrios and Thomas are in-valuable in assisting Father Philip and Father Demetrios in the service. When needed they also assist in reading the Six morning Psalms at Orthros. Demetrios and Thomas both arrive early on Sunday morning (8:30 am) for Sunday Orthros and are the last of the altar servers to leave at the end of the Divine Liturgy. They assist at Memorials, Artoclasia, and Forty Day Bless-ings. ( Note: all Altar Boys are invited to come to Orthros to learn the tasks and prepare to be an Epistle reader.)

Hrisi Parea News for June 2017

Sixteen adventurous seniors set off on a bus trip to chocolate paradise early in May. Cerreta Candy Company in Glendale, Arizona, opened its doors for a free factory tour, free samples of candy, and of course, shopping! Just in time for Mother’s Day, several members took ad-vantage and purchased an item or two for cherished moms and daughters who are moms. See pictures for Hrisi Parea members inspecting the factory and shopping for chocolate heaven! Afterwards, the trip included a bus tour around the University of Phoenix Stadium. Ground crews were pulling out the grass surface from the stadium in preparation for an RV show the following weekend and all were delighted to see the vast platform moving outdoors. The Westgate Entertainment Center, next door to the stadium, was the lunch destination for the day. Although there were several restaurants available for lunch, most – if not all – decided to have their lunch at Opa Life Greek Café. Greek specialties and an occasional burger were en-joyed by the group. All was followed by a relaxing bus ride back to St. Katherine’s piloted by our ever efficient driver, Captain Kirk!

Since the Jewish Feast of Pentecost was a great pilgrimage feast, many people from throughout the Roman Empire were gathered in Jerusalem on this day. When the people in Jerusalem heard the sound, they came together and heard their own languages being spoken by the Apostles (Acts 2:5-6). The people were amazed, knowing that some of those speaking were Galileans, and not men who would normally speak many different languages. They wondered what this meant, and some even thought the Apostles were drunk (Acts 2:7-13). Peter, hearing these remarks, stood up and addressed the crowd. He preached to the people regarding the Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the Holy Spirit. He spoke about Jesus Christ and His death and glorious Resurrection. Great conviction fell upon the people, and they asked the Apostles, "What shall we do?" Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spir-it" (Acts 2:38-39). The Bible records that on that day about three thousand were baptized. Following, the book of Acts states that the newly baptized continued daily to hear the teaching of the Apostles, as the early Christians met together for fellowship, the break-ing of bread, and for prayer. Many wonderful signs and miracles were done through the Apostles, and the Lord added to the Church daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:42-47). Listen to the Hymns of Pentecost and read details about the icon by clicking here More link and information can be found at www.goarch.org Apolytikion (Plagal Tone Four) Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fisherman all-wise, by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them, drawing all the world into Your net. O Loving One, glory be to You.

Kontakion (Plagal Tone Four) When the Most High came down and confounded tongues of men at Babel, He divided the nations. When He dispensed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity, and with one voice we glorify the Most Holy Spirit.

The Feast of Holy Pentecost is celebrated each year on the fiftieth day after the Great and Holy Feast of Pascha (Easter) and ten days after the Feast of the Ascension of Christ. The Feast is always celebrated on a Sunday.

The Feast commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, a feast of the Jewish tradition. It also celebrates the establishment of the Church through the preaching of the Apostles and the baptism of the thousands who on that day be-lieved in the Gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The Feast is also seen as the culmination of the revelation of the Holy Trinity. The story of Pentecost is found in the book of The Acts of the Apos-tles. In Chapter two we are told that the Apostles of our Lord were gathered together in one place. Suddenly, a sound came from heaven like a rushing wind, filling the entire house where they were sitting. Then, tongues of fire appeared, and one sat upon each one of Apos-tles. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as directed by the Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). This miraculous event occurred on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, cel-ebrated by the Jews on the fiftieth day after the Passover as the culmi-nation of the Feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10). The Feast of Weeks began on the third day after the Passover with the presentation of the first harvest sheaves to God, and it concluded on Pentecost with the offering of two loaves of unleavened bread, repre-senting the first products of the harvest (Leviticus 23:17-20; Deuter-onomy 16:9-10).

Apolytikion of Unmercenaries Cosmas & Damian

Sainted Unmercenaries and Wonder Workers, regard our infirmities; freely you have received, freely share with us.

Άγιοι Ανάργυροι καί θαυματουργοί, επισκέψασθε τάς ασθενείας ημών, δωρεάν ελάβετε, δωρεάν δότε ημίν.

Kontakion of Unmercenaries Cosmas & Damian Having received the grace of healing, ye extend health to those in need, O glorious and wonderworking phy-sicians. Hence, by your visitation, cast down the audacity of our enemies, and by your miracles, heal the world.

    July 1st we celebrate:

Cosmas & Damian the Holy Unmercenaries

    Ἀνάργυροι Κοσμᾶς καί Δαμιανός

These Saints, who are different from those that are celebrated on the 1st of November, were from Rome. They were physicians, freely bestowing heal-ing upon beasts and men, asking nothing from the healed other than that they confess and believe in Christ. They ended their life in martyrdom in the year 284, under the Emperors Carinus and Numeri-an.
