Not So Ordinary

Those of you who are students of the liturgical calendar know that last month we officially finished the

season of Christmas and celebrated both the Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord. We now enter into

“Ordinary Time”, the first of two periods where we observe neither major feast seasons (like Christmas

or Easter) nor extended seasons of penance and reflection (like Advent or Lent).

The term “Ordinary Time” is somewhat misleading, however. It does not mean that these are average

ho-hum days. It is simply a recognition of the fact that these weeks are counted using ordinal numbers

(the third Sunday after Epiphany, the second Sunday after Pentecost, etc.). Instead of being drab or com-

monplace, the days between the major Christian seasons can in fact be full of meaning and significance. It

is true that we do not focus quite as much on the “big events” of Christ (namely his birth, death, and

resurrection) during these days. But it is during this time that we can focus on Jesus’ life. And in so

doing, he walks alongside us in ours. Ordinary time allows us to ask the question: “Now that we have

met the savior of the world in the manger (or later in the year at the cross and at the empty tomb), what

comes next?”

It was a great way to usher in our first stretch of Ordinary Time. But we don’t have to participate in

group service events to experience the extraordinary nature of life in Christ. We need simply to commit

ourselves to a community of people who love God and love neighbor in all that we do.

Welcome to Ordinary Time! May the Holy Spirit dwell richly within us to make it extraordinary!

*Observant readers may notice that the photo in this article only shows 16 people besides myself. Three St. Luke partic-ipants in the service project did not arrive until after the photo was taken. :)

What comes next may feel ordinary as the

decorations come down, the celebrations are

over, and we return to the normal rhythms of

our lives. But if Christ is present among us,

even the ordinary can take on sacred charac-

ter.

I was fortunate to begin my journey into Or-

dinary Time with nineteen* (!) members of St.

Luke Church as we participated in a meal

packing event for the Central PA Food Bank

at Lycoming College on Martin Luther King,

Jr. Day. In so doing, we lived out the ex-

traordinary call to love both God and neigh-

bor.

MINISTRY SITE PROFILE As part of our preparation for the Call Process

we are asking members of our congregation to complete 2 surveys, the results

of which will become an integral part of our Ministry Site Profile. The Ministry

Site Profile is a more extensive document that will be posted online for pro-

spective candidates. If you have not already completed a survey please com-

plete a set and return them to the church office. The result of this will be tal-

lied for inclusion on the Ministry Site Profile.

SERVICE MINISTRY

SOS SHEPHERD OF THE STREETS will be held Sunday, Feb. 10th with Dr. Morris

Smith preaching at both services. It’s February- time for Valentines, hearts, and Love. It’s also

time to open our hearts and show our love to those less fortunate in our community who

are helped by the Shepherd of the Streets. Our economy and budget cuts in health services

have increased the financial need for medical services. The Shepherd has experienced a

large loss in revenue this year, so it is most important to support this need. The Shepherd

ministry also provides hygiene items, bedding, and baby needs. Items needed are of

regular sizes: Deodorant, Baby Diapers, Wipes, Shampoo, Powder, Oil, Q-tips, Soap, Shav-

ing Cream and Razor, Tissues, Shampoo and Conditioner, Toilet Paper, Women’s Hygiene

Products, Combs, Blankets, Sheets, Pillowcases, Nail Clippers, Towels, and Wash Cloths.

These hygiene items are collected in the West entryway.

Happy New Year from the Pre-School After many activities to get ready for Christmas, like our Rudolph the red-nosed rein-deer day, we enjoyed our holiday break. But once again the children are back into their daily routine. In the month of January, the theme was let it snow, which it did frequent-ly. Our letters were K, L, M and N. We enjoyed our visits with the story mobile. Mrs. White read lots of books about snow just in time for the first big snow fall of 2019. This month the children had their vision checked by Mary Crawley from Northcentral Sight Services. Mrs. Stroble’s 4 and 5 yr olds made blue chickens after reading the book en-titled, “Blue Chicken”. Mrs. Fetherby’s 3 yr old group studied penguins and made rec-tangle shaped penquins. Check out the preschool wing and view the children’s artwork for the melting snowmen. Mrs. Perry’s homeroom group made snowflakes out of pop- sicle sticks to hang in their classroom.

When you are cleaning out any closets during a snow storm, the preschool would love to take any craft supplies off your hands. Extra felt? We will take it. Extra ribbon? We will take it. Extra buttons? We will take them. Etc… Feel free to drop them off in the Art room in the preschool wing.

ATTENTION St. Luke members - Pre-school registration will begin February 1st for church members and returning students. There are informational pamphlets on the wall outside of the church office. For more infor-mation please contact Cindi Stroble, director. 570-323-2705.

TO: Ministry and Committee Directors and Liaisons

FROM: Sarah Young /Office Manager

DATE: February 1, 2019

SUBJECT: Annual Report

Yes, it is that time again! Reminder for the 2018 Annual Reports for the Congregational

Meeting, Session II.

A tentative date has been set for the Annual Congregational Meeting, Session II for March

10, 2019, with March 17th as a snow date. I would like to have the reports available for the

congregation to review, the Sunday (March 3rd) before the Congregational Meeting, Ses-

sion II. We have set the deadline for Ministry/ Committee reports for Monday, February

18, 2019.

A good way to put together your report is to review your copies of your Ministry’s

minutes from your Ministry Recording forms. If you need a copy of last year’s report,

they can be found on the wall outside my office.

I will need ALL reports no later than Monday, Feb. 18th! If your report is late, it will

not be printed in the report, but as a separate insert page.

Thank you

Sarah Young
