I am especially excited that we are gearing up to take the meeting to the next level by hosting the meeting in cities outside of Texas, which shows the society’s commitment to be more sensitive to the travel concerns for other states in our regional society. It is very exciting that our organization is taking measures to increase participation in membership and meetings participation, as we look to other host states within our region.

It has now become obvious that the bone loss around teeth is due to inflammation initiated by microbial plaque and that oral inflammation can contribute to the systemic inflammatory load with subsequent consequences in our patients. A goal for Periodontists has been for many years and, continues to be, to reduce the inflammatory burden on the host. Whether this is performed by non-surgical or surgical techniques, our goal is to minimize oral inflammation. Does the placement of a dental implant to replace a tooth create an environment for inflammation? When a tooth or teeth are replaced with a dental implant and restoration, multiple components, which create interfaces between the components, are utilized. If these interfaces become contaminated with bacteria and consequently inflammation, the

New bone formation requires a solid base, blood supply and protected space. These represent some of the biological prerequisites needed in order to understand clinical indications and their predictability for bone formation. A system to evaluate clinical indications for bone formation will be presented. In addition, bone formation with bone graft materials will be reviewed including new materials not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

What makes us ignore our “gut feelings” when it comes to our money? Have you ever felt that your income wasn’t a true reflection of the hours you work? Have you ever dismissed a feeling of “something isn’t right here,” when asking an employee to explain a financial report or billing question? Well, Doctor, it’s time to examine the things that make you think, “Hmmm…” Learn how to detect and safely eliminate embezzlement in your practice. This eye-opening presentation is unlike anything you’ve seen before! Because specific

presence of and the location of the inflammation may have an affect on the host. As such one might consider if such inflammation has any consequence for the patient and secondly, is there a way to minimize the consequence(s).

Educational Objectives:• Determine what types of implant interfaces become contaminated with bacteria. • Determine if there is/are consequence(s) to having inflammation around implant interfaces. • Understand marginal bone remodeling around dental implants.

Speaker Biography:Dr. Cochran is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontics at The University of Texas

Future translational clinical trials will determine the efficacy of the new materials for patient treatment.

Educational Objectives:• Review the biological requirements for bone formation. • Understand a classification system for clinical indications for bone regeneration. • Appreciate that new bone graft materials are being developed for translation to patient care.

WHY HOSPICE PATIENTS NEED—AND DESERVE—BETTER ORAL HEALTH CARE

Hospice care is intended to keep terminally ill patients comfortable in their final days. Yet, says one dentist who has long worked in that environment, proper oral care and dentistry is often

overlooked or even ignored in many hospice units.

“It has been evident to me that there is little time for oral care within the typically very busy day of already extended nursing home staff,” said Kristi Soileau, DDS, who has practiced nursing home dentistry for 30 years.

As Soileau was planning for her practicum and capstone experiences through Creighton’s Master of Science in Health Care Ethics program, she decided to center her experiences on oral care for hospice patients, with a focus on comfort, compassion and dignity.

In her recently published article, “The Hospice Patient’s Right to Oral Care: Making Time for the Mouth,” Soileau explains how hospice patients need—and deserve—proper oral care.

“I wanted to ignite a spark of awareness about the need for oral care throughout one’s life, and not simply based on cosmetic awareness or acute pain management,” she said. “It is vital for both emotional as well as physical support and improved quality of life.”

From a physical health standpoint, Soileau says proper oral care can lead to more benefits than comfort alone.

“In the past 20-plus years, medical literature is replete with information substantiating the systemic connection to oral health,” said Soileau. “Dental and other oral diseases promulgate higher risk for stroke, cancer, viral pneumonia, brain abscesses, poorer diabetic control, and the like.”

Despite the benefits, caregivers face many barriers that keep them from providing proper oral health care, she said, including:

• Lack of staff time• Inadequate supplies• Nonexistent dental insurance• Not having a dentist on staff• Poor patient cooperation• Insufficient knowledge in dealing with the needs of the aged

Worst of all, she said, some see oral care for hospice patients as futile—a mindset that Soileau takes to task.

“Health care professionals are called to respond empathically to treat the whole person, preserving patients’ humanity, while working through challenges,” Soileau says.

Proper oral care can also help maintain a patient’s quality of life and dignity in their final days. Soileau ays that dentists should:

1. Advocate for caregivers, hospice unit staff members, and families to learn to administer oral health care.2. Educate students about the need to perform charitable services where need is significant.3. Set standards for hospice patient oral care and train caregivers to meet those standards.

Given the barriers that exist, Soileau believes some oral health care is better than none at all.

“Hospices only require a caregiver to offer the best therapy possible given the limitations that may exist,” she said. “Comfort care is not so linked to rules and regulations, but rather to general compassion and well-intended alleviation of distress.”

Soileau believes proper oral care for hospice patients is crucial in easing that distress.

Kristi Soileau, DDS, is a graduate of Creighton University’s Master of Health Care Ethics program. Discover how this master’s program can train you to navigate complex issues facing the health care industry.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (CONTINUED)

easy, and many of us will find this an excellent time to reflect and reminisce about those college days, when we visited Bourbon and Canal Streets and other familiar spots.

This summer has gone by very quickIy. It seemed as if I were even more busy with patient care this summer than many years in the past. I have had at least four of my summer patients with either confirmed or suspicious lesions. For me, that means I stop all active treatment, focus on the patient’s needs and get more in-depth involvement with the family members. With the aid of Dr. John Wright in the Pathology Department at the Texas A&M Dental School, one of those patients was a confirmed case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and the patient underwent a successful surgery for removal of the lesion and tissue transplant to the jaw and face. The others happened to be just scares, but these times demand that we pay attention to detail, commit to loving our friends, families and neighbors, and never take life for granted.

Adding to my usual summer routine, this summer has also been packed with meetings at my local dentalsociety, as the past president continues to follow through with attempts to reach out to all dentalgroups in our Dallas County area. During the previous annual meetings session, our local organizationreached out to all ethnic groups, all dental practice groups and groups of all diversities as an effort to bring us closer together to better serve the needs of our dental community. Through the efforts of the ED and her staff, at the President’s request, we were able to provide a platform, with a local Judge as moderator.

The forum was initiated to allow all dental groups to ask questions, verbalize personal and group needs, and to give direction on actions that would cause our groups to move forward in more cohesive andproductive ways for the benefit of everyone. As this project has evolved, the follow-up town hall meeting will expand the target audience and again provide an open forum for dentists to voice needs and opinions that will help move the DFW area towards the goal of “one large group of dentists” rather than “factions of dentists”. “That goal is obtainable. It just needs people and time”.

I am excited that our Southwest Society of Periodontists (SWSP) is taking measures to increase our member and meeting participation. Our membership chair and committee are reaching out to our new graduates of the profession and to other members from the past, as well as those that have taken a break from membership. Our membership benefits are being expanded, and we hope to soon offer on-line and other remote participation opportunities. Our exhibitors have been faithful in their involvement, and we want to retain those relationships and add others that are sensitive to our needs and provide leading edge materials and supplies for our profession. Ourorganization will continue to grow as we continue to provide outstanding continuing education and peersupport that is matchless at any other level of meeting experience.

The Southwest Society for Periodontists has an extremely bright future. Because of its continued inclusivity of all members, our organization has retained a substantial number of its members and has been successful in adding

new graduates and new members. A great member benefit our SWSP organization has provided is the spirit of fairness and openness to its membership body by embracing the diversity of its members. The support of the organization allows each member to serve in many capacities in the organization and prepares our members for service at many levels beyond the regional organization.

Prepare to meet us in Dallas for the winter 2019 meeting by re-joining the organization and/or registering for the meeting. Expect to be wowed, and come with the anticipation of meeting up with old friends and making new ones.

Enjoy the rest of the cool weather, before the ice-cold winter arrives, and consider how WE, together, can spend our time and resources to make each Southwest Society of Periodontists meeting a GREAT SUCCESS. We can only do so if we are there!

I look forward to many more years of participation and support as a peer partner and a financial partnerworking toward the success the success and future of our organization.

Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve, and hope to see you soon.

“OUR MISSION, SHOULD WE ACCEPT IT:

“TO LIVE OUT REAL LIFE, WHICH IS SEEKING TO SAVE LIVES”

Committed;
