by STAFF REPORTERMANGOSUTHU Buthelezi, FW de Klerk and a representative of Nelson Mandela are among those expected to attend the funeral of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in London on Wednesday.

They will join more than 2,000 invited guests including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Shirley Bassey and Jeremy Clarkson at the funeral with military honours at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Although not officially a state funeral, it is the grandest such service seen in Britain since the death in 2002 of the Queen Mother.

De Klerk, the last president of apartheid South Africa, who was embraced by Thatcher as a reformer, became the first former head of state to confirm his attendance at her funeral, accompanied by his wife Elita.

De Klerk ordered the release of Mandela from jail and then agreed to the negotiations that ended apartheid, for which he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

John Carlin, author of Playing the Enemy which was adapted into the Clint Eastwood film Invictus, is to write the Oscar Pistorius Story. The book will detail the rise and fall of Pistorius, with publication shortly after his trial ends

Original Invictus author signs Oscar Pistorius book dealby STAFF REPORTERPENGUIN Books South Africa has announced that John Carlin, author of Playing the Enemy (published by Atlantic Books, 2009), is to write the Oscar Pistorius Story.

The book will detail the rise and fall of Oscar Pistorius, with publication shortly after his trial ends.

Carlin’s Playing the Enemy was a No. 1 bestseller in South Africa, was shortlisted for the William Hill Award and adapted into the Clint Eastwood film Invictus, starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. The commercial success of Invictus was significant in

proving the size of the market for well-made, well-written films on South African themes that eschewed overt moralising and focused on storytelling.

Carlin is also co-author of the official autobiography of Rafael Nadal. Atlantic’s editions of Playing the Enemy have sold over 100,000 copies.

Ravi Mirchandani, Editor-in-Chief of Atlantic Books, said, “As a former South Africa correspondent for The Independent and as author of the international bestseller Playing The Enemy, John is the ideal writer to do justice to all the many issues surrounding

Between them they face charges of murder, crimen injuria and assault with the intention to commit grievous bodily harm.

They are accused of beating to death the 29-year-old former

Royal Marine, following a Super XV match in Durban last month.

Magistrate Vanitha Armu also ruled that the names and pictures of the accused may be published. The accused will have to report to the police station closest to their homes twice a week, are to be barred from attending events at Kings Park or leaving Kwa-Zulu Natal, and will be asked

Pan MacMillan have acquired global exclusive rights of an account of the murder to be written by Barry Bateman, who was one of the first reporters at the scene, and fellow journalist Mandy Wiener, author of the bestselling Killing Kebble: An Underworld Exposed.

Their work will be published under the title “Behind The Door: The Oscar and Reeva Story”.

to relinquish their passports according to the investigating officer, Brad Nathanson.

The accused are: brothers Blayne and Kyle Shepard, and Dustin van Wyk, all from Glenwood, Andries Jacobus van der Merwe from Bluff, and Grant Cramer from Escombe. The five face charges of murder (one count), assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (three counts) and crimen injuria (one count). Accused number 5, Grant Cremer, is facing charges of one count each of assult to cause grievous bodily harm and crimen injuria.

Williams, who died outside Kings Park Stadium on 23 March, was born in South Africa and

moved to the UK as child. He was a Royal Marine for 11

years and fought in Afghanistan and Iraq before leaving in March last year to work in the lucrative anti-pirate trade as a security guard protecting ships from armed bandits off the Somali coast in East Africa.

He was in Durban for only a short time while the ship he was working on docked in Durban.

Attorney Malcolm Lutge, who acts for one of the four men, said his client’s family was devastated.

“They are very sorry for the victim. As parents they understand what his family must be going through.”

The trial is set for 7 June 2013.

Mandela’s daughters take struggle veteran Bizos to court in art dispute

Mandela’s daughters are taking the ex-president’s long time friend George Bizos to court over sales rights of family art work- estimated at £1millionby FLAMINIA GIAMBALVONELSON Mandela’s daughters are taking George Bizos, one of the ex-president’s oldest friends, to court over rights to sell the former president’s artwork worth more than £1 million. On Monday two of Mandela’s daughters began legal proceeding at South Gauteng High Court to oust Bizos and three others from two of the companies managing the ex-president’s artwork. Zenani Mandela-Dlamini, South Africa’s Ambassador to Argentina, and her half-sister Makaziwe Mandela, have joined forces with Ismael Ayob, Mandela’s former attorney.

The three made clear that they are unhappy with the management of money that was due to flow to the Mandela children and grandchildren. They claim the four directors have “blocked any distribution of income and capital”.

Aside from Bizos the illustrious quartet in question includes Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, Eastern Cape Judge President Clement Sangoni and the lawyer and businessperson Bally Chuene. Bizos, who is currently representing victims of the Marikana mine massacre at an official inquiry, dismissed the sisters’ claims. “We are confident we were regularly appointed at the wish of Mr Mandela five years ago,” The Star newspaper, in Johannesburg, quoted Mr Bizos’s

lawyers as saying. In his memoir Long Walk to

Freedom, Mandela recounted his lifelong friendship with Bizos - “a man who combined a sympathetic nature with an incisive mind”.

The sisters’ case was filed on Monday by Ayob who helped to establish the holding companies eight years ago. This came two days after Mandela, 94, was discharged from hospital, where he had been treated for pneumonia. Their affadavit accused Bizos and his colleagues of failing to execute their duties with “care, skill and diligence”. The art works include The Robben Island lithographs through which the president

reflects upon his incarceration. Also included is the Impressions of Africa collection – one piece of which is part Mandela’s famous handprint containing an image which resembles The African continent in the centre. It is said that the print was created “by accident” while Mandela was working on other sketches. Mandela explicitly requested that no artwork associated with him be sold, marketed or distributed until the legal action was resolved, said Mandela’s lawyer Bally Chuene. The Sydney-based Touch Galleries and the Mark Galleries in Durban decided this week to abide by Mandela’s request, “out of respect for Mandela”.

Eddie Izzard wins inaugural Jo’burg Child Welfare International Award for services to children’s charities

by STAFF REPORTERMARCH was an exciting month for Johannesburg Child Welfare (JCW). The charity was able to raise its profile in the UK with the presentation of the inaugural JCW International Award for services to children’s charities at a ceremony well attended by the expatriate South African community.

This prestigious Award was presented to Eddie Izzard at a Reception held in London on March 7th by Mpume Maduna, Chair of JCW, in recognition of his inspirational leadership qualities and work on behalf of children in both South Arica and the UK.

In her remarks Mpume was pleased to note that she and Eddie Izzard had both attended

Sheffield University, although in his response Eddie was quick to point out that unlike his host he had not actually graduated due to other distractions!

Amongst the audience enjoying the evening with Mpume and Eddie were South African members of the Saracens Rugby Club (pictured), and representatives of W H Smith, Investec, South African Airways and Reed Smith.

In accepting the Award, Eddie paid tribute to the work of JCW in building re-communities and secure conditions for large numbers of disadvantaged children – JCW alone cares for 43,000 on a daily basis in the Greater Johannesburg region.

In offering personal support for JCW’s future work he hopes to

visit one of the JCW projects in Johannesburg when his current world tour arrives in South Africa in June 2013.

The JCW International Award will be presented annually in alternate years to a South African and non-South African national.

The 2014 Award will recognise a South African national’s contribution to children’s welfare and the .award ceremony will take place Johannesburg.

For more information about Johannesburg Child Welfare, major initiatives such as the Aganang Learning Centre for training auxiliary social workers, and forthcoming events please see the JCW website www.jhbchildwelfare.org.za or e-mail JCW at [email protected].

Crowds went wild as Parow’s irreverent humour and incisive rhymes complemented Fokof’s harder sound to deliver a totally accessible night of contemporary Afrikaans music with plenty of houding. As you can see, both performers were on top form in this, Fokof’s tenth year on stage.

THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SMASH HIT ARRIVES IN LONDON

Award-winning South African pianist and vocal artist Shannon Hope will be making her mark on the London music scene this April.

Interview: Shannon Hope hits London’s music sceneby CANDICE MCMILLAN SHANNON Hope has left many an audience awed by her soul-stirring lyrics, powerful vocal performances and musical mastery of the keyboard. She has been described as “a thrilling, enthralling, endearing and awe-inspiring performer” and having seen her perform myself, I would have to agree.

With two full-length studio albums already in circulation and years of well-earned stage experience under her belt, Miss Hope brings something definitely worth hearing. I had the opportunity to chat to Shannon about her music and upcoming London tour.

For those who may not have heard your records before, describe your music in a sentence.I often say that my music falls within the “honest” genre, and while that doesn’t really describe a sound, it captures the essence of what my show and my music is about.

What do you have in store for your London audience? What can people expect from a Shannon Hope show? This is my first solo tour to London and I’m excited to introduce my music to a new audience. When I perform solo, the tracks are showcased in their raw form, as they were initially written; with just piano and vocals, so it’s very much about the music and what the songs communicate. It allows me to really explore the boundaries of songwriting and engage in authentic and raw intimacy with an audience. The songs are lyrically-focussed and fall within the singer-songwriter genre, with some elements of pop/rock sneaking in once in a while.

Tell us about the inspiration behind the music of your current album, Fight A New Day.

I write from personal experience – my view of love, life and everything in between, so my albums generally tell the story of my life as it progresses. I often refer to my two albums as the “broken heart” and “fixed heart” albums, but essentially Fight A New Day is chapter two. There is a lot about love and loss and moving on, but in chapter two there’s also a lot about believing in yourself and fighting for what you want and who you are.

Who are some of your favourite artists? Is there anyone in particular that has been a relevant influence for you?I was trained classically and that has definitely left its mark on a lot of my writing. I grew up listening to greats like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, and then shifted

focus to artists like Muse and Skunk Anansie. Skin from Skunk Anansie is my greatest vocal inspiration, and there is a wide range of artists who have stumbled across my path and left an imprint on who I’ve become as a songwriter, probably the most notable being Fiona Apple, and more recently Regina Spektor. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of blues which seems to be pushing me in a new direction in my writing, but I’m still figuring out what that direction is.

What’s the most frequently played music on your iPod?At this moment, it’s only playing The Black Keys…

Where did music start for you?I started piano when I was six, and was apparently singing before I could talk, so music has always been a part of who I am and was always going to be what I pursued as a lifestyle. I studied music through high school and did my grades in piano through Trinity College, before joining my first band in 1998. I started a rock band 2 years later and was involved in a few different musical incarnations before going back to my roots as a piano-based songwriter and launching my solo career in 2009.

So what’s it like being a South African artist carving a path in the music industry?I would imagine it’s quite similar to pursuing a career in music anywhere in the world, and I certainly didn’t start out with false hopes that it was ever going to be an easy task.

Any dream pursuit has its challenges, and most musicians I know are only able to pursue their music after hours because they rely on ‘day jobs’ to pay the bills, but that’s not a reality limited to South Africa.

I’ve been working in this industry since 1998 and have seen so many changes during that time – some good, some damaging – but it’s

certainly never dull! What would you ultimately like to achieve musically; what would make you feel you’ve ‘made it’?To make a reasonable living off music in South Africa doesn’t happen often, and I’ve become quite stubborn in my efforts to prove that it’s possible without compromising who I am as an artist.

It’s been interesting finding the balance between what I’m willing to compromise and what I’m not, but my goal has always been to tell my story in a way that connects to the world very honestly, and I hope that I can continue to do that while developing and maintaining a sustainable career.

Ultimately I’m a musician. That’s who I’ve always been, and all I ever want to be. I don’t really think of the concept of ‘making it’ as an end goal, but rather as a process of realising various dreams along the way.

Do you have any wise words for aspiring musicians?I would say the same thing to anyone who wanted to pursue any dream. If you want to be something, if you want to do something, you should go and do that.

You get one chance to do this life thing. If you waste your time and energy doing things you hate so that you have enough money to continue living a life you essentially hate, then you’re wasting your life. Make a decision about how much you’re willing to compromise in the pursuit of your dream, and give yourself a chance to see if you can make it work.

As hard as the fight can be, I’m happier knowing that I’m doing everything I can to be who I want to be, living the life that I want to live.

You can catch Shannon live at The Troubadour (18 April 2013), The Bedford (25 April 2013), The Regal Room (26 April 2013) and Gallery Café (27 April 2013). More info onwww.shannonhope.co.za

The OPTIMIST

SOMETIMES it’s tricky to find something fresh to write about every week.

This relationship has been going on for a while now – but just like a human relationship, there are the great days when material emerges without the slightest provocation, and days when something interesting to write about is scarce.

This week, a fountain of stories. The only female British Prime Minister has died. Aptly in the Ritz. A story in itself.

Five South Africans are on trial for killing a British soldier in Durban (oh, this will fuel the flames of young men and violence in South Africa.)

The one titbit I choked on, slight gag reaction, I confess, was the exposure of a 17-year old something called Paris Brown. The Divine Miss Brown.

Simply put, Miss Brown applies for job as Britain’s first youth crime commissioner - a sort of youth liaison officer.

Miss Brown is paid for the privilege.

Sadly, her unchecked Twitter comments are revealed and Miss Brown turns out to be the sort of person you will need garlic and crosses to ward off. Her tweets

are racist, smutty and every decent parent’s nightmare. As

if anyone cares that this scary looking person is

horny, wants hash or even exists? I don’t.

But quite rightly, complaints were lodged and the

investigation launched. The woman who hired her pleads

on her behalf, popping in the age factor as her defence.

One must understand.Oh my word! There is absolutely

no defence. Seventeen-year-olds have fought

in wars and become entrepreneurs. Some are actually clever - clever

enough anyway not to admit to wanting to be drunk all the time, get laid all the time and be a ‘rebel’ against society.

In public. When will the world stop giving credit to cretins who think not being able to read, work an honest day or actually contribute to society entitles them to be ‘eard and to show the rest of us the finger.

My skin crawls. That girl should be grounded and denied any privileges for the next six years.

I would say she has disgraced her friends and family, but you know where I am going with this…

The one sad reality in this country is the worshipping of nothingness.

Admiration for stupid, vacuous celebrities, throwing their personal trash onto the public floor.

Anyone who paints a beautiful Range Rover in pink should be shot.

Orange breasts and bad speech are in vogue. So much for ‘knowledge is power’.

But maybe we need to read about these sorts of individuals, if only it were comic.

Maybe these little life portraits will inspire other young people not to settle for a mere existence but strive to have a full and ambitious life.

Ambition is great. I would rather read about success than those who think common is as good as it gets.

Haar antwoord aan my was, “Well it is about time! We haven’t had rain for weeks!”

Southern Africa moves towards unified railway network Botswana signs agreement with South African railway company to

transport coal exports

British Airways adds 700 seats a week to Johannesburg

by STAFF REPORTERThe three additional flights British

Airways introduced to Johannesburg early last year on a trial basis have now been confirmed in the 2013 schedule.

This means the airline will continue to operate 17 flights a week from London to South Africa’s business capital. It will use Boeing 777 aircraft to operate the three additional services. The aircraft will fly overnight to Johannesburg, turn around in 90 minutes and return to London as a daylight service.

The double-daily Boeing 747-400 service will remain unchanged and will continue to operate as an overnight service on both the inbound and outbound sectors.

Ian Petrie, the airline’s regional commercial manager for Africa, says confirming the nearly 700 seats a week which the new services will provide will help ease the pressure on the busy route.

“We’ve always said that we constantly review our routes and will add capacity where there is

BA increases flights to Joburg and Cape Town – a vote of confidence in SA’s business

demand. That’s exactly what we’ve done.”

British Airways is the only carrier to offer a First cabin on direct London services and the Boeing 777 daylight service will offer a full First cabin of 14 seats, 48 Club World (Business Class seats), 40 World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and 124 World Traveller (economy) seats.

“We expect there to be premium demand for the daylight services for people who want to ease into their business trips rather than step off the aircraft and go straight to their meetings. The daylight schedule also makes it possible to make a same-day connection to New York”, says Petrie.

British Airways also flies directly to Cape Town offering double-daily 747-400 services in the busy summer season between October and March and reverting to a daily schedule during the Western Cape winter. It is the only airline to offer direct flights between London and the Mother City year-round.

by KATHERINE PURVISSOUTH Africa’s largest freight railway company will begin transporting the first coal exports from mineral-rich Botswana, signifying a further step towards a cohesive railway system across southern Africa.

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is expected to sign an agreement with the Botswana government in the next month allowing transportation of the coal from Morupule Colliery near Palapye to the coastal South African city of Durban.

Owned by Debswana – a joint venture between the Botswana government and De Beers – Morupule Colliery is the only operating coal mine in the country and produces around 3.2

million tonnes of coal each year following an expansion in 2011.

Initial plans for the transportation include a 35 wagon train carrying the exports from the 30-year-old mine into South Africa twice a week.

“We intend to run two test trains from Morupule to Durban before May 1,” said Nyameka Madikizela, TFR’s executive manager for international business. “We will use their [Debswana’s] locomotives to Krugersdorp and then change to ours.”

TFR currently operates three rail networks across southern Africa. The North-West Corridor integrates South Africa with Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The North-South

Corridor joins the country with Zambia, Zimbabwe and the DRC, while the Maputo Corridor brings South Africa, Swaziland and Maputo (Mozambique) closer together.

Coal analyst for XMP Consulting Xavier Prevost described the agreement as “interesting” given Botswana’s previous logistical challenges in finding a way to move its reserves.

The government had previously considered moving its coal exports through Maputo or Walvis Bay in Namibia. The cost of moving coal to Durban will be high, however, given the distance – around 700 miles – and the large handling coasts at Durban port.

Rand strengthens after Bank of Japan’s announcementBY STAFF REPORTERThe Rand benefited during the start of the week from the Bank of Japan’s commitment to quantitive easing. This decision contributed to a surge in global liquidity which saw investors searching for high-yielding emerging market assets. According to ABSA capital “We have seen foreigners buying some R13bn ($1.5bn) worth of South Africa bonds over the past 20 days and so long as this trend persists, rand bulls may remain in the ascendancy.” The Rand however remains a volatile currency and its rally came to an end mid-week. What are your current concerns for human rights in South Africa? There are some danger signals; for example… there have been threats to the freedom of the press. There have been threats to the independence of the judiciary and the independence of the legal profession. And there is a great deal of corruption… but on the whole it is still very much a functioning democracy.

All the elections since 1994 have been peaceful. There’s a great deal of wealth redistribution still to be done but the black middle class is growing. There’s still a way to go but I’m optimistic.

How would you describe your relationship with South Africa now?I’ve always maintained contact with South Africa, partly because my parents and some of my family were there and we’d go back and visit them at least once a year.

And then in 1990, for the first time I went there professionally to teach as a visiting professor at the University of Cape Town. It was

there that I began to be involved in some of the early meetings and discussions about South Africa’s

new constitution. I love South Africa. I feel completely at

home there and I am lucky to feel completely at

home here. On the other hand, I’ve never lived as a grown-up in South Africa, I left in my student days… and I think it’s slightly

different if you leave at that stage to someone who’s worked there as an adult. I think it’s

easier to make the break and

then

to adapt to the country that you move to. I miss most… snoek… Peppermint Crisp… and Anchovette.

Where has your work taken you recently?I represented as a barrister the last of the white farmers in Zimbabwe.

It was the most searing case I’ve ever done…it was amazing that these people were filming it all the way through [for the film Mugabe and the White African], but while they were out there, the farmers were invaded and they were beaten up to within an inch of their lives.

injustice in the fact that it didn’t apply to children of my age with dark skin.

Do you think that experience influenced your decision to study law?Yes, very much so, because law is the framework that protects human dignity and promotes constitutional democracy and without that protection for the individual you move very quickly to tyranny.

How does life in Britain differ to life in South Africa? On the whole, Britain is unique in that it observes the rule of law. There’s the opportunity of the individual to challenge decisions made by government.

There’s a free press and these are just virtues that people in this country tend to take for granted.

That doesn’t mean to say one must not be vigilant… everyone ought to play a part in showing that those values which define and reflect this country, should be maintained.

by KATHERINE PURVISHOW did you find your first few years in the UK?I found the UK a very hospitable place and I feel very grateful that my wife and I were both very warmly welcomed here.

I was a bit distressed when I first came that some of the problems in South Africa, such as racial discrimination, still existed but race relations seem to have improved over the years.

What are your memories of growing up during apartheid? For a white child at that time… there was a certain delight in living in a country of sunshine and open spaces and unrivalled beauty, but there was always that dreadful shadow that this life of freedom was reserved to a very small part of the population.

Somehow or other, one picked up from an early age that this was just unfair and I always remember that feeling that although things seemed absolutely idyllic on one level for me personally, there was a great

David WillersVice-chairman of Business Council for Africa

I’d never had clients beaten up during a case.

As a lawyer one shouldn’t really identify too strongly with one’s clients because you then lose objectivity but I couldn’t help it in this case because they were obviously the good guys.

I do a lot all over the world… but if you ask: ‘Is that because of my South African background?’

My South African background is etched in my mind.

There are terrible things that can happen to people if a country doesn’t give them a voice…and doesn’t respect human dignity.

Soneni brings ‘The Soul’ to Zim Achievers Awards on 20 April

Soneni & The Soul to headline spectacular entertainment at ZAAsby STAFF REPORTER EVER wondered what a collaboration between funk rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers and soulful singer and rapper Lauryn Hill sounds like?

The answer is none other than Soneni & The Soul, an Afro underground soul band billed to feature at this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA). The ZAA, now firmly established as the Zimbabwe UK community’s premier annual red carpet show to honour outstanding achievers, will be held on Saturday 20 April at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London’s fashionable district of South Kensington.

Soneni & The Soul will join an exciting line up of entertainers to toast the success of this year’s group of award recipients, who range from academics and entrepreneurs to community champions and musicians. Fresh from releasing their debut EP, titled Million Miles Away, in December last year, the band have been busy rocking live shows at music venues around the capital and have created a buzz with their energetic, passionate and soulful performances. Taking their inspiration from lead singer and

songwriter Soneni’s Zimbabwean roots, their music fuses bass and percussion grooves with catchy guitar riffs and soft soulful vocals.. Apart from Soneni, the band consists of producer and bassist Elmo, drummer Boukie and guitarist Andrew aka A-Train.

They have steadily built a loyal fan base on the back of support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, BBC London 94.9, regular airplay on underground heavyweights Déjà Vu FM and Rinse FM, as well as a residency at live music night We Play Music Live in London. The celebrated US hip-hop band The Roots featured Soneni & The Soul

on its blog as an exciting new band on the rise. More thumbs up have come from rap icon Raekwon ‘The Chef’ of the legendary hip-hop super-group Wu Tang Clan.

The band’s EP opens with the upbeat track, ‘We Can Go’ (In the Sunshine) which has a funky groove and positive lyrics, followed by the title song ‘Million Miles Away’, which takes us on Soneni’s daily struggle between dreams and reality. The upbeat ‘Siyahamba’, with its pulsating house music sound, is guaranteed to pack dancefloors.

They have designed this event around family and friends, bringing one and all together for a weekend full of laughter, homegrown entertainment and good ol’ ‘Babwean’ frivolity. They have endeavoured to keep costs at an absolute minimumIt costs £20 per person (16 years and over) and £10 for children (15 and under) per day/night. Camping is included in this price – no extra

cost for pitches. Sandawana is supporting Kariba Animal Welfare Fund Trust (KAWFT), who do an absolutely wonderful job on the ground at Kariba. Sink your teeth into TransylvaniaNot just for vampire lovers: Georgia Dawes discovers Transylvania is a fascinating region of scenic beauty, Gothic

architecture and historical delights

Left: Sighisoara in spring; Right: view from Bran Castle, home of Vlad the Impaler; Below: town square in Sighisoara. In the middle one can see the Clock Tower. The yellow building just in front of it is Casa Dracula, the birth place of Vlad Tepes (all images: Flickr/Aleksander Dragnes).

by GEORGIA DAWESAS the fog and the low lying clouds part, a gothic style castle is revealed in the distance, perched on a steep rocky cliff. You gaze across at the imposing structure and wonder, who could be inside. Dracula? Edward Cullen? Count Duckula?

Presenting Transylvania. The land of the delicious red liquid (red wine that is), steaks (meaty ones, not wooden vampire killers) and plenty of fascinating history, scenic beauty and stunning Gothic architecture for you to sink your teeth into.

Located in central Romania, Transylvania is largely renowned for its association with vampires and the horror genre in general. Transylvania willingly markets this connection, claiming Bran Castle, a Gothic style castle in Braşov, as the setting for the home of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Transylvania is a stereotypically perfect setting for vampire books and films. Think Gothic architecture, mountainous landscapes and low lying mist in the winter. However, if you aren’t into the whole blood sucking, stake driving thing, Transylvania also boast a host of non-vampire related activities for you to enjoy.

Braşov is one of the largest and most popular cities in Transylvania and it, along with the surrounding area, features unforgettable attractions. Visitors can explore stunning churches, hike in the nearby mountains, and even see bears.

Braşov’s main landmark is the Black Church, the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul. Built between 1383 and 1480, its name comes from its appearance after a fire in 1689. It is packed full of history, with statues dating back to when it was first built and some 120 fabulous Turkish rugs hanging from its balconies.

The Black Church also features one of the world’s largest pipe organs with 4000-pipes. Even if you are not religious, the Black Church is a must visit, even if it is just to top up your holy water (yes – another vampire reference).

For those more interested in natural beauty and the great outdoors then a climb up Mount Tâmpa is a must. For those less interested in walking, never fear, there is a cable car all the way to the top. Towering above Braşov from the east, Mount Tâmpa offers stunning views, great hiking trails and even Braşov’s own piece of Hollywood; a huge ‘Hollywood’ style sign reading Braşov in giant letters at the top of the mountain.

Also on the ‘must visit’ list is the Liberty Bear Sanctuary. Set up by a Romanian woman after she witnessed the extreme cruelty and illegal exploitation suffered by one of Romania’s magnificent native animals, Liberty Bear Sanctuary

now helps more than 60 brown bears enjoy a new life.

Watch them climb trees, swim in the pools and forage on the vegetation. These beautiful animals are certainly not camera shy and they know their best angles. Clear your memory cards and be prepared to take lots of flash-less photos.

Finally, after a long day sightseeing I am sure you will be starving. If you love meat and polenta, you are going to love Romanian cuisine. However, in case you don’t, or you swiftly get sick of polenta for breakfast, lunch and dinner as I did, perhaps a red wine liquid diet would work best. Romanian red wine is absolutely delicious, very inexpensive and good for you.

So whether you are a wine drinker, a Twilight watcher or a wildlife lover, Transylvania has something for you.

Just be sure to eat lots of garlic before you go, just in case.

by EDWARD GREENLANDTHE South African Rugby Union has announced plans to open a new rugby museum, The Springbok Experience, at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

The launch of the museum, which is to be opened on Heritage Day 24 September 2013, was marked by a ceremonial capturing of the hand-prints of 43 national team captains at the V&A.

As part of the exhibition the print moulds will be cast in bronze and installed in public displays.

Springbok captain Jean de Villiers, and modern legends Francois Pienaar and Joost van Westhuizen were joined by pre-unity rugby stars Thompson Magxa (32 test caps), and South Africa Rugby Football Federation icon Jack Juries, all men that have contributed greatly to South African rugby.

Des van Jaarsveldt, the oldest living captain of the old South African Rugby Board Springboks, Austen van Heerden ,the oldest

living captain of the former South African Coloured Rugby Board, and Bomza Nkhola, the oldest living captain of the South African Rugby board were also among the special guests.

One of the key aspects of the experience is to push the awareness of South African rugby’s diverse traditions and redress the imbalance of the past

with a focus on black rugby prior to unity in 1992.

Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union, felt this history had to be addressed.

“They say that the past is a foreign country but in South Africa it is a troubled one as well. Our new rugby museum will embrace that past. We want

MIND THE RUCKROB FLUDE

WHILE the South African teams have had a turbulent time of it in the Super Rugby competition this year, something has been gnawing away at me since one Jacob Westerduin opened the door of his new office in Canberra back in July 2011. Jake White, as he is known to all – he changed his surname as a kid when his mother remarried – was appointed as Head Coach of the Brumbies and set about immediately with the flush-out that was required at the once former champion team.It wasn’t pretty; White showed some household names the door and brought in a raft of keen, raw youngsters to assume their places. Some people thought White had lost his marbles, but those close to the man who effectively delivered the Boks the 2007 World Cup knew better than to doubt his ability to turn a team around. What we saw was White’s magic wand verified instantly as the Brumbies – who placed 13th of 15 teams in 2011 – won game upon game against more fancied teams with more impressive player registers. White himself would tell you that he doesn’t own a magic wand; he was merely doing his job. What I really can’t handle is the continued vilification of White by some South Africans. Why? Is it

because he has “turned his back” on his home country in favour of Australia? Or is it because he is chasing the Wallaby coach’s chair once Robbie Deans gets fired? I mean how dare he look after his own interests and challenge himself on the top stage again?!Well I don’t give a flying tornado about who White coaches. He is a rugby mercenary, plying his trade like any professional in a world where his own country’s rugby administration, SARU, binned him after he captured rugby’s greatest prize. Like a lot of expats, he was forced to seek employment elsewhere. He does what he feels is best for the Brumbies (without interference) and is backed to the hilt. As such, there have been no dramas with his tenure there. He certainly hasn’t had to fly halfway across the world mid-tour to explain a loss to his bosses, like he had to in 2006 in one of his most crucial weeks as Bok coach. Some have even nicknamed him “Jake the snake” after he fell out with Winning Way business partner Mark Keohane, and then having Lions’ coach Loffie Eloff fired while there as a consultant. There were also rumours of dishonesty around publishing rights with Craig Ray, the author of his book, In Black & White. It was then disclosed shortly

after the book was published that despite what it says, White and his wife Debbie were in actual fact already separated and he had a girlfriend (and there were other rumours of affairs). And lately, he has got some South African fans’ noses out of joint by setting up a scholarship for young South Africans to go to Australia to play rugby and potentially play for the Wallabies. What we should be doing is celebrating his success; he is yet another example of a Saffer overseas doing us proud. If he becomes the Wallabies’ coach, good on him. It’s about time that everyone judges Jake on his rugby coaching ability only.

Despite a few blots on his copybook, we should be proud of Jake White and his achievements, and not crucifying him

Leave Jake Alone

to celebrate South African rugby in all its diverse history as well as shine a spotlight on its turmoil and its growing pains,” said Hoskins.

“There is no better way to link the past with the present than take a piece of the past – in the shape of the captains’ hand prints – and place them into our present and future by capturing them for posterity and installing them as part of our Springbok Experience.

“This was a very special and humbling occasion, to have more than 40 national captains agree to assemble on this day was an incredible way to launch The Springbok Experience.

Jurie Roux, CEO of SARU, believes the new museum will be one of South Africa’s main attractions.

“People can forget their traditional ideas of what museums are like – the Springbok Experience will be completely different, it will be interactive, digital and immersive as well as displaying some incredible artefacts in telling rugby’s South African story.

We also wanted to make it as accessible as possible to the public, which is why we identified the V&A Waterfront – with 23 million visitors a year – as the ideal location to bring that story to the world” he said.

The 800m² exhibition will feature a Springbok shop, an interactive rugby museum, and a ‘Springbok Trials’ rugby skills zone, replacing SARU’s former museum in Boundary Road, Newlands.

WHY DOES SA CONTINUE TO VILIFY JAKE WHITE? P15

by KEITH MOORESARACENS have set themselves up for potential double silverware with a bonus point 47-17 win in the Aviva Premiership over Worcester Warriors at Allianz Park on Sunday.

Sarries were able to record a convincing win that secured their home semi-final spot despite resting a number of key players. Owen Farrell, Steve Borthwick and South Africans Ernst Joubert

and Schalk Brits were given a break but Jacques Burger made a welcome return after an 18-month absence following knee surgery.

David Strettle broke the record for the quickest ever hat-trick in a Premiership encounter by dotting down three times in the space of just 22 minutes to help his side to yet another home win as the Sarries machine marched on.

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall said, “It showed the depth

of our squad as we backed up well after a testing European quarter-final at Twickenham. We took our chances.

David Strettle’s second try was as good a finish as you will see but, though we are happy with the win, we played well below our standard.” Despite the fact that there are still two rounds of fixtures to be played in the competition, the convincing win over the weekend has guaranteed

Saracens one of the two available home semi-finals to be played in early May.

The men from Allianz Park have an away game against Gloucester and a home fixture against Bath yet to play but no team can stop them from hosting a semi-final in their quest to claim both the Premiership and Heineken Cup trophies.

Brendan Venter‘s men have been in astounding form this season;

they have not lost a single fixture on home turf in any competition so far.

They have seen off Munster, Cardiff, Ulster and Harlequins in what has been one of the most impressive seasons put together by an English club in the professional era.

A shock semi final loss to Sale in the LV= Cup last month put paid to them aiming for a first ever treble trophy win, but in terms of the significant trophies, they are very much in the mix.

Two further rounds of fixtures will determine their opponents in the Premiership semi.

However, at this point it looks to be either Northampton or the recently struggling Harlequins who will pay a visit to Allianz Park on 11 May.

The only team who can change that are Gloucester, who are currently five points off fourth place.

In the Heineken Cup they are tasked with taking on the highly talented Toulon side, boasting stars such as Carl Hayman, Jonny Wilkinson, Bakkies Botha and Freddie Michilak.

If they win both semis, they will have the difficult task of playing the finals – one in Dublin, one in London – on consecutive weekends.

The North London team will have their work cut out in taking down their French neighbours, but I strongly believe they have what it takes to win both trophies.Saracens fans celebrate the win (Image: Gary Baker).
