The 2015 guide to getting Fit

According to various studies and trend observers, by the second week in January, nearly one-quarter of all New Year resolutions already have been laid aside, especially those that pertain to losing weight or getting in better shape.

But we’re not going to let you off so easily! Nope! We are here to pump . . . you . . . up.

Okay, actually, the Source’s Guide to Getting Fit is more about sustained, sensible and level-headed commitments to health, and with listings for gyms, yoga studios and personal trainers—an opportunity to explore the fitness plan that will fit you like a running shoe.

For warm-ups, we start off with three profiles for the mind, diet and strength—a “mindset” coach; a look at a magazine based on a lifestyle diet; and, a gym that caters to the “older set.”

Gregg Swanson didn’t start as a fi tness coach. As a kid, he says he was “un-coordinated,” and asthma kept him away from many sports. But in the past 15 years, Swanson, who recently relocated to Bend, has fashioned a personal coaching style that bundles physical training, career advice and shifts in men-tality, and trundles them all toward a goal he unassumingly calls a “warrior mindset.”

We are talking at Cafe Sintra. Swanson leans back into his chair. His sunny disposition is both calming and infectious.

“If your body is out of shape, your mind will be out of shape,” he explains. A former high tech salesman in California, Swanson took to the gym in the

mid-1970s—and his discipline is evident: Massive biceps bulge under his crisp shirt, and his gray hair sports a close-cut buzzcut that would make a Marine drill sergeant proud. But Swanson also has complemented that structured ap-proach to physicality with more free-style sports like rock climbing and moun-taineering—and those approaches are clear in the manner he considers his cli-ents.

“The term ‘life coach,’” he explains, “is used so much. But I don’t do relation-ship coaching.” He adds, “An action needs to be in conjunction with a mindset.”

Swanson hosts a popular podcast called Warrior Mindset, but his bread-and-butter has been an elite corps of clients he coaches—usually on a one-year pro-gram that challenges individuals to jump out of the ruts in their lives, meaning making physical, mental and often career changes. He talks about one client who was “absolutely miserable” in her career managing accounts in the Bay Area, who came to him wanting to make changes over the next two to three years. He gave her a one-year timeline, and within 10 months, she had quit her job, started a new business leading adventure trips for women and moved to Bend.

“It starts with, ‘I want to change my life,’” he says simply. Check out Swanson’s blog at WarriorMindCoach.com/blog

Though Bend is home to some seriously fi t seniors (which is ei-ther inspiring or depressing, depending on your own relative age and athleticism), until recently there was a gap in fi tness services for the 50-plus set.

Enter Cascade Boomer Fitness. Last year, David Adamson and his wife Cynda saw a need for

exercise classes and fi tness coaching for older adults and started off ering small group fi tness classes that incorporate a wide range of activities and an awareness of the physical needs and limita-tions of that age group.

“We knew there would be interest in a small group fi tness class that wasn’t just focused on developing tight buns and six-pack abs like you fi nd in the McGyms or, at the other extreme, assumes un-young people are too fragile to do anything more physically demanding than waltzing around with two pound dumbbells,” Adamson says. “Strange as it sounds, some pro-grams designed for older adults are too easy for them to be very eff ective. We realized there are plenty of 50-plus people who seek more challenging activities because they are still very much alive and kicking.”

One way Cascade Boomer Fitness channels this joie de vivre is through the Younger Games. Inspired by the wildly popular book and fi lm series The Hunger Games, it off ers a light-heart-ed but hardworking challenge that helps participants fi nd their youthful vigor.

“Just like in the movie, the Younger Games is about meet-ing challenges and surviving hard workouts while having fun. The name is tongue-in-cheek. Exercise is work, but fun and humor make it easier,” Adamson explains. “Sometimes we do drills you’d see at the NFL or in military physical training, but we laugh about it, knowing we aren’t as young, strong or skilled as young people who do them every day. That itself ispretty funny.”

The couple is well equipped to guide their peers through the fi t life. David is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) certifi ed personal trainer with a certifi cation in senior fi tness and was the chief executive of a primary care organization prior to moving to Bend. Cynda is also a certifi ed personal trainer with a certifi ca-tion in functional fi tness. Both have been active throughout their lives—David as a competitive athlete and Cynda as a dancer.

After realizing that a strictly gluten-free diet wasn’t the full solution to his celiac disease, Cain Credicott sought out other eating options that might sooth his dietary woes. Stumbling upon the paleo diet back in 2011, just before its rise to popularity, Credicott almost instantaneously started Paleo Magazine, a bimonthly lifestyle publication based out of Northwest Crossing. Credicott says the publication covers inspiration-al stories, people that have used paleo to heal themselves or overcome challenges, recipes, paleo-friendly businesses, research and lifestyle.

“I wanted people that are checking out at the grocery store to see the magazine. They wouldn’t know [paleo] was out there if they didn’t know to look for it,” explained Credicott.

For those still unfamiliar, paleo is an eat-like-a-caveman mentality that avoids modern, processed foods. The hunter-gatherer approach means eschewing dairy products, grains, legumes, processed oils and refi ned sugar. Credicott is adamant that paleo isn’t just a dietary choice, it’s a lifestyle change that truly aff ects every aspect of the body and mind.

“It makes you talk about other aspects that will round out your health,” said Credicott. “It helps you understand what makes you as an individual healthy and it helps guide you in covering those aspects. If you’re looking at it like a diet you might as well count the days until you fail. It’s not a Weight Watchers, and it’s not Atkins.”

In Bend, you can fi nd Paleo Magazine at Nature’s General Store, Nat-ural Grocers, Whole Foods Market, and Barnes & Noble, or online at paleomagonline.com.

Warrior Fitness Training

For many, fitness has become more about what they can’t do rather than what they can do. One fad this week, another next week. The truth, however, is that you are far greater than you ‘think’ and have truly amazing potential to completely transform your physique. My objective is to make you strong physically and mentally to achieve peak performance. My style of fitness incorporates numerous proven programs as well as the latest cutting edge training methods. Warrior Fitness Training is not for the weak of heart. The training is difficult. There are no shortcuts. Physical and mental breakdowns may occur. Any deficiency in physical fitness affects confidence. When an individual realizes he does not have the fitness or skill to accomplish a particular task self-doubt weakens both intellectual and physical abilities. The goal of Warrior Fitness Training can be summed up in one phrase, “Make yourself as indestructible as possible.”
