It’s December anD It’s the source. It’s the enD of the year, santa’s DecIDIng If he shoulD be naughty or nIce anD new year Is halfbuzzeD arounD the corner. all that stuff may be fInIshIng up, but our theme thIs month Is creatIon. It’s all about lookIng forwarD, not back.
AHoriBuzz teaches us all about creativity and the hard graft of writing songs. We get some fashion forward advice from Kiwi Style Icon Peter Dunne - yes, ‘that’ Peter Dunne. Speaking of Creation - we shine a light on QT’s own Holly Arrowsmith as she’s just about to knuckle down and create her next album. Source Labs gets down to business and sorts who’s brewing the best coffee in town. Adam reminds us why living in NZ is great and Matt lets us in on what we should (and maybe shouldn’t) be doing for New Year.
All that plus a wrap on The Source Shakedown, the ever-growing gig guide, some stuff that’ll make you laugh, some stuff that’ll make you think and with luck create some good discussion.Get stuck into The Source - it’s all our Creation here in our little slice of Eden. Besides, apples are in season.source out.

So aS if telling you which bike to buy waSn’t bold enough laSt iSSue, thiS iSSue i Shall tell you where to ride.If you have a fast and light bike with minimal suspension then that’s easy, explore the basin on the Queenstown Trails Trust inspired trails. There’s over a hundred kilometres of groomed “piste” to satisfy your needs. Pick sections and spend the summer networking all the different ways to join it up, or how to join up the café and vineyard options. I personally like the ride out to Jacks Point to earn great coffee. Downhill bike? Apart from the obvious Gondola, it’s fun exploring beyond the Bike Park too. Tick off the Wynyard Express, the famous Zoot Track (easy shuttle), Skippers Pack Track, Rude Rock or the Remarks track (can be harsh on the vehicle!) or even walk your bike up Coronet Peak and session a few sections with your mates. There are jump parks for little bikes (Gorge-ous Road jumps) and larger scale jump parks for most other bikes (Mini Dream and its surrounds). For people with reasonable skills and a “do it all” bike (and attitude),
make sure you head out to 7 Mile Bike Park to sample a good plethora of fun single tracks. A good way to hit up 7 Mile if you like it a little more technical and busy is to start at the Queenstown end, head up Gold Digger (parallel to Moke Lake road), return the same way, cross the road and into the BOB trail off the end of the car park and empty your energy levels in the Bike Park. Leave enough to get back to your car or town though. If you like that remote feel the Moonlight Track is hard to beat. Start at the Arthurs Point end so you’re fresh for all the single track, don’t forget to pick up the Gold Digger Trail at the far end. It’s the closest back country feel to central Queenstown. We are fortunate to have the “in-form” Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, who help pull people and their ideas together and coordinate various groups to produce an array of options for the single track hounds. They are key in the CREATION of our blossoming bike culture.if you’d like to join, the bike club would love to hear from you: www.queenstownmtb.co.nz

Pass The Sauce is back - hitting the Red Rock stage every second Saturday all summer. With a seriously improvisational feel (that’s cuz they’re making it up as they go), PTS is a locally formed super group with a who’s who of local musos sitting in and keeping it funky. Think of BBQ Reggae without the reggae. Eclectic ambient tunes put together for your lazy sunny afternoon
pleasure. Invading the patio at The Red Rock, it’s guaranteed to be different every time and a set filled with sonic experiments you’ll have stuck in your ear goggles till they do it all again a fortnight later. Besides, you never know who’ll be sitting in with them next. Mark your calendars: 14 and 28 December, 11 and 25 January, 8 and 22 February at The Red Rock, 5 to 8pm

The French don’t like spiced rum. At least that was the conclusion I reached after a recent trip to Vanuatu. Thankfully, the ni-Vanuatu don’t share the English affinity for beer, instead they inherited the colonialist French genomes for booze, resulting in small market shops being filled with nice wine and white French-Caribbean Rhum Blanc. I brought a bottle home and spiced it myself doing it this way: 1. Buy a bottle of white rum. 2. Go to Med Mart and buy the following spices: 1 whole nutmeg, 1 cinnamon stick broken into pieces, 1 vanilla bean split lengthwise, 2 whole cloves, 1 cardamom pod, 4 black peppercorns, 1 star anise, 1 large navel orange.
3. Save $: Steal the nutmeg and cardamom from a rich spice-hoarding friend. 4. Throw spices into a dry frying pan (med heat) for 2 minutes or until it smells awesome. 5. Zest the orange peel with no “white” stuff 6. Throw it all in a coffee grinder for 2-3 spins 7. Mix it all in a mason jar with the rum and let it sit for 24-48 hours 8. The hardest part is filtering. You can use 2 layers of cheese cloth and a funnel or a coffee plunger after you removed the big bits. 9. Drink it. Or let it sit with vanilla for later. the three thingS pregnant women dream moSt of during their firSt trimeSter are frogS, wormS and potted plantS. Pregnancy hormones can cause mood swings, cravings and many other unexpected changes. Oddly enough, hormones can often affect the types of dreams women have and their vividness. The most common are these three types, but many women also dream of water, giving birth or even have violent or sexually charged dreams.

BeST BIke RIDeSBy: The KenneTT BroThersThe Brothers Kennett are the go-to source for cycling beta from Bluff to the Bombay Hills. They’ve written enough biking books to fill a shelf and have become the defacto cycling fountains of knowledge. With our little slice of paradise fast becoming the pinnacle of cycling destinations in Aotearoa it’s no wonder they’ve rolled out a dedicated guidebook for these parts. This petite book has everything you need to know about road rides and mountain bike adventures in the area and not much more. Designed
to slip into a camelback, it’s a great introduction and overview of what’s on offer. If you’re new to the sport(s) or the area it’s damn near essential reading, with every page a reminder of how good we have it around here. Lots of inspiration to be found in the 70 pages with every type of rider catered for and enough route descriptions and maps to get you into and out of trouble. If you want a chance to win your own copy check out the booty page (30).

ten bow tie tipS from the hon.peter dunne
SO, we waNTeD TO FIND OuT a BIT MOre aBOuT BOw TIeS. whO DOeSN’T? haD a BIT OF a ThINk aBOuT IT aND DecIDeD TO caLL FaShION IcON PeTer DuNNe (The ONLy ‘exPerT’ ON The SuBjecT we cOuLD ThINk OF). GOOD ON yOu PeTer, yOu’ve reaLLy FILLeD IN The GaPS. whO’D have ThOuGhT There waS SO Much TO IT?1. always use a self-tie bow tie. They just look better.2. choose a firm fabric – your tie will be less floppy and much easier
to tie. (My ties in the main are from the New Zealand manufacturer rixon Groove, or Tommy hilfiger from the united States.)
3. Tying a bow tie can be tricky, but becomes easy as you get the hang of it. It is really no different from tying shoe laces. There are many good instructional videos available on youTube.
4 Pick colours that complement the shirts and suits you wear. Because the tie area is smaller than an ordinary tie, you can afford to be a little bolder in your colour choices. Generally speaking, you cannot go wrong with stripes and polka dots.
5. avoid single colours – they look too much like adapted evening wear.6. Make sure your bow tie is not too thin or narrow, otherwise you will
end up looking like a cheap nightclub entertainer.7. In general, your tie width should be about the width of your collar.8. Go for a tie with a straight edge, rather than a pointed one. It looks
more authentic.9. Do not go for other adornments like a pocket handkerchief – they can
look too fussy and preppy. however, braces are okay and can add to the style.
10. enjoy the experience!

ChristmAs hoLLyHOLLY ARROWSMITH - REMEMBER THAT NAME. IF YOu HAVEN’T HEARD THIS QuEENSTOWN SONGSTRESS SINGING YET, YOu WILL SOON ENOuGH. ARROWSMITH (NO, NOT ‘THAT’ ARROWSMITH) HAS JuMPED TO THE QT CuLTuRAL FORE IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS FOR WINNING A COOL $10K IN SCHOLARSHIP FuNDS FROM AMP AND ROOST MORTGAGES TO RECORD HER DEBuT ALBuM.Sometimes hype, recognition and talent are mutually exclusive. The elusive combination is like hitting a moving target. The tricky alchemy of good, known and buzzworthy. Sometimes before all the passengers get seated the train leaves the station and before they can strum the first chord the whole thing goes off the rails. Not this time - Holly Arrowsmith has been preparing her whole life for this. New Mexico born, Queenstown raised, there’s a worldly timbre to her voice.
She sings with a soul that outgrows her sub twenty laps around the sun.Acoustically driven new wave folk, there’s a mingling with the country and the western that are the flagpoles to her first home. This ain’t no Gore show though - leave the dang and twang at the door. This is the kind of C&W meets folk that strips everything but the honesty away and what you’re left with will leave you trembling.Putting that grant to good use is the summer plan for Arrowsmith - she’s setting up a recording studio down in the Catlins so she can allow the songs to emerge at their own pace. Her demo EP ‘The River’ is available now as a pay what you like single from her Bandcamp site. Don’t believe what we have to rave about? Give it a listen for yourself: hollyarrowsmith.bandcamp.comShe’s already opened for Avalanche City and is plying her trade at Rhythm & Alps later this month. The train’s rolling - jump on board and tell ‘em The Source sent ya.

thiS time of year comeS with many well-worn clicheS, uSually along the lineS of it being better to give than to receive, a time for reflection and forgiveneSS and, if you live in QueenStown, a time to avoid the town centre like the plague. whilSt at the beSt of timeS it can SometimeS be a wipeout-eSQue challenge to Skillfully avoid the piSS and puke outSide the Souvenir Shop (Sorry JarviS), over the chriStmaS and new year holidayS it can be a gauntlet-run of epic proportionS... and that’S before you even think about avoiding the boganS.new year’s eve will always be to sociable folk what Valentine’s Day is to the romantics: a time of commercial insistence that you put your hand in your pocket and follow their rules. come on everybody, you should be having fun! once upon a time, new year’s eve was just a jolly piss-up in the pub... er sorry Vanessa, I meant, erm, a few friendly drinks in a well-run establishment, with no chance of intoxication. perish the thought!
unfortunately, the millennium bug seemed to give pub landlords a mental virus which caused them to make a big deal out of what really should just another night on the turps. all of a sudden it became what oliver reed called “amateurs’ night”, an evening for those who need to be told how to have fun. and for Queenstown, seemingly half the population of southland. we must count ourselves lucky this year - the weekdays fall in such a way that we shouldn’t see the first mullets and dental catastrophes crossing the kawarau until December 30th. a veritable christmas present in itself. of course, no one wants to be a sad-sack. after all, it is nice to be around friends. but so often the DIy aspect gets overlooked. It’s easy. your usual $11 pinot? make it a $30 one. sack off the supermarket; head down the deli. you earned it! hustle and bustle of town? bugger that. enjoy the fireworks from the balcony with friends you love. hug with affection, look friends in the eye and shake hands with conviction - and promise yourself that you’re going to make 2014 *even better* than 2013. cheers!

Three couples went in to see the minister to see how to become members of his church. The minister said that they would have to go without sex for two weeks and then come back and tell him how it went. The first couple was retired, the second couple was middle-aged and the final couple was newlywed. Two weeks went by, and the couples returned to the minister. The retired couple said it was no problem at all. The middle-aged couple said it was tough for the first week, but after that, it was no problem. The newlyweds said it was fine until she dropped the can of paint. “Can of PAInT!” exclaimed the shocked minister. “Yeah,” said the newlywed man. “She dropped the can and when she bent over to pick it up I had to have her right there and then. Lust took over.” The minister just shook his head and said that they were not welcome in the church. “That’s okay,” said the man. “we’re not welcome in Mitre 10 anymore either.”
A drunk walks into a bar, orders a shot and and immediately pukes all over his own shirt. “Wha’ my gonna do now? My wifez gonna kill me.” “Relax,” the barman says, “give me a five-dollar note.” He folds up the note and puts it in the guy’s shirt pocket. “Tell your wife some drunk puked on you and gave you five bucks to have your shirt cleaned.” “Thass a great idea!” When the drunk gets home his wife answers the door. “Where have you been? What happened to your shirt?” He tries to put on a sober voice and says, “Relaaax honey, some drunk guy puked on me and gave me five bucks to have my shirt cleaned.” The drunk’s wife reaches into his pocket, grabs the money and says, “There’s $10 in here!” “Oh yeah, he wet my pants too.”C

what’S the faSteSt way for a yank to annoy a kiwi? tell him that rugby JuSt lookS like a Slower, Softer verSion of gridiron? no wait, i got it, aSk him if he haS kangarooS in hiS backyard. One thing’s for sure, kiwi folks certainly know the trick in reverse. just fire up a conversation about politics and gradually steer it into a holier-than-thou rant about some cockamamie uS policy that would never pass in New Zealand. and nothing goes straight for the jugular like gun control. If you’ve never been to the States, spoiler alert! Not all americans are walter from the Big Lebowski. Not all yanks go to sleep with a 9mm Beretta under their pillow. But most kiwis get that.what most kiwis don’t get is why the general american affection for firearms is so vehement. and if kiwis want to live up to their reputation of being unbiased world citizens, they’ll need to drop the arrogance. Don’t agree with yankee gun love, just try and understand it.In 1970 american historian richard hofstadter wrote an essay titled “america as a Gun culture”. read it. his use of “culture” is key – the uS societal values have been molded by a gun-slathered 300-year past.as far back as the 1600s, colonial New england enacted mandates that settlers keep firearms in their homes after native populations killed 6% of military-aged men. americans began making lots of guns - and better guns at that. historians credit the Pennsylvania rifle – exceptionally accurate for

it’s time – with helping the uS win the revolutionary war. Four years after america drafted it’s constitution, they felt the need to edit it until it was 100% clear that the government can’t snatch up guns.It didn’t stop there. westward expansion made guns romantic. Frontiersmen toted colt revolvers as status symbols. Marksmanship became an indicator of manhood. In the 20th century gangsters ran New york and chicago with Thompson submachine guns. wwII vets brought home the guns of their enemies as a keepsake and passed them down to their kids and grandkids.21st century america has serious gun problems and nobody disagrees with that. But kiwis need to understand that it’s a cultural problem and finger-wagging won’t solve it. who knows what will...

the GoD DeLusionby Richard Dawkins
Evolutionary theorist Richard Dawkins is not an atheist who sits quietly in the pews. The scientist discoverer dubbed “Darwin’s Rottweiler” refuses to regard religion as mere harmless nonsense; he views it instead as one of humanity’s most pernicious creations. In The God Delusion he attacks arguments for the existence of God; accuses religions of fomenting divisiveness, war and bigotry; and castigates believers in intelligent design. Good Christmas present then...

WHAT IS BEER? Technically speaking it is a fermented drink that is lager or ale dependant on the yeast used. Some of the beers our big breweries sell to us as ales are in fact lagers but that’s another story. It is made from four basic ingredients… water, barley, yeast and hops.Recent times have seen the rise of flavouring additions or adjuncts to beer. This is nothing new and in many countries it has been an accepted practice for centuries. The Belgian Lambics involve immersing whole fruit into casks of aged beer allowing the fruit to impart flavour, aroma and colour to the beer. Traditional fruit lambics are Kriek made with cherries and Framboise made from raspberries. Recent additions have included peach and plum just to annoy the traditionalists! These styles are available in NZ and are worth sourcing just for their uniqueness. Several New Zealand brewers are using adjuncts to palate-blowing effect. Another style not familiar to many New Zealanders is Smoked Beers… yep gotta love that two in one feeling aye…but alas, no, not as you think. Again this style is nothing new and goes back to the 1st century BC but with the recent worldwide resurgence in craft brewing we are seeing it appear on
the radar once again. These are reminiscent of smoky Scotches because the malt is kilned over an open fire. Two of my favourites in our fair green land are from a couple of our most talented brewers. Big Smoke from SorenEriksen’s 8 Wired Brewing Company is a Smoked Porter so it pours a lovely dark red/almost black colour and gives off a wonderful dark roasted chocolate flavour wrapped
in a cocoon of smokiness. Absolutely superb with smoked chilli mussels. Another to check out is brewed by the Yeastie Boys, a couple of guys who have earned a solid reputation for brewing style bending beers. Rex Attitude is the first beer in the world to be brewed with 100% peat smoked malt. The smell is like dirty old hospital bandages in that iodine sense but the layers of flavour that unravel as you taste it are a thing of beauty.I would to love sit in front of a roaring open fire (reminds me of a bar or two in QT) with a glass of Laphroig in one hand, Rex Attitude in the other and a big fat... cigar. This is the perfect bottle to share and watch the faces people pull when they sniff it…Ian Marriot is our Beer editor and one of our original Source writers. He now runs a wicked little craft beer bar in warkworth called Tahi. If you’re up north, call in and say hi.

The coffee is as strong as his personality and if it’s your cup of tea you’ll be back. You really can’t have this list and not include vuDu. s: The theme of The source this month is Creation - is the song writing process something that’s calculated and planned, do you wake up and say “today I’m going to write a song” or is it something more organic?a: good question! my attitude to this has changed over the years and by all accounts this process is different for everyone. nowadays I’m a big believer in the great thomas edison quote - “genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration”. for a long time I would just sit and wait for the golden gates to open and the creative spirit to rain down upon my frustrated hori consciousness and endow me with the genius that I thought I deserved in order to write the greatest song in the world that no-one cared about! I think waiting
around for inspiration is an excuse some musicians have to justify that fact that they are just useless and probably too stoned! these days I write every day and 99% of what I write is shithouse but some days there’s 1% of something that’s enough to set me off in the right direction. It’s worth it.s: When you guys play live there’s a big energy exchange with the crowd - how does that energy change when you are in a crammed little club versus a festival with a field of people?a: perspective is indeed everything when you’re going from big festival stages to a small club stage! I used to think the big festivals required everything on stage to be 100 times louder and everything had to be 100 times more physical! It can be there’s 10,000 people out there

tonight you have to be 10,000 times more awesome! what I’ve learnt is no matter where the performance is you will never lose if you give yourself 100% to the music first. serve the music first, everything else is secondary, within that you’ll have good and bad gigs but you’ll never lose.s: your live show feels like it has a huge amount of improvisation - do your songs have ‘definitive’ versions or are they always evolving?a: this whole hori thing of mine was started by me booking a gig, asking a bunch of mates to show up and then hoping for the best! I started this so I could always have a musical place that I could go to that was like going on a music holiday with my friends! I’ve tried my best to avoid turning this into
the ‘thing’ it now is and now I’ve given myself over to what it’s evolved into. this ahoribuzz thing never had an audience which is what I loved about it most as it was a place that a group of people could go to and try and challenge their own musical boundaries. now it does have an audience and I’m grateful for that. people come for a good time, now it’s all about trying to slay a different musical beast every night. It’s fun! s: What are you looking forward to for your summerlands gig? a: as a muso 99% of the job is to create a vibe and if there’s a vibe already there then our job becomes more fun-filled than it already is! AhoriBuzz plays at summerlands on 2nd January 2014. Tickets on sale: summerlands.co.nz

Just because we can. we’d also like you to know what’s coming up next month so you can join in and have your say. we’re keen to hear from artists, writers, photographers, DJs and opinionated freaks - especially if you’ve got something you want us to publish or you’ve got something you need to get off your chest... next month’s issue flies under the banner of:
