    2) Commands: We will study the formal rules of commands next year. For now, memorize these commonspoken commands in their singular ( / ) and plural forms.

The commands introduced in this lesson are commonly used with family and friends, in giving directions, and at

times, in shopping or ordering food. In Arabic, as in English, it is considered good form to make requests rather than

give commands when dealing with new people or when in a formal setting1. Review the several ways you already

know to make polite requests, including:

    3) Learn the formal conjugations of this verb by listening (arabicstudy.pbworks.com) as you read along with thischart. Practice using it by writing your own sentences.

When counting nouns, note the word order and use of plural/singular in the following chart2,3:

    Thousand

Recall that NON HUMAN PLURAL NOUNS ACT (GRAMMATICALLY) FEMININE AND SINGULAR. This

applies to all verbs, adjectives and pronouns affected by these non-human plural nouns. For example:

aloud everything around you (on the right theres a book, on the left theres a strange guy, in front of this building

    theres a starbucks, etc).

    Also, to walk

4Since a cab will generally only stop on the right side of the road to let you out, this phrase indicates that you want to get out.

Listen to TWO of the market stories available online. Listen for main ideas; dont worry if you dont understand every

word! After listening several times, write out a briefEnglish summary ofwhat youve understood from each story (to

turn in). Tell the stories to an English speaking friend to acquaint him/her with this aspect of Arab culture!

    6:prepare for class

    a. Bring 2-3 itemsyoure willing to sell with you tomorrow for our class market! Youll get them back afterclass.

    b. Have a look at these bargaining strategies from your instructors (we hope youll share strategies youhaveused, too!)

Be pleasant. Remember that youre shopping, not arguing. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in the shops. Bargaining is not a fast process. Counter the sellers price with one of your own, and then bargain to a happy medium. Do not expect

that the price you offer will be the final price (so offer less than the max youre willing to pay!)

Take someone with you who knows their stuff. Window shop one day, ask an Arab friend what they think prices should be, then go back another day.

As a foreigner you might never get those prices, but you can aim for them!

Assure the shopkeeper youll be back again if you get a good price. If youre buying more than one item, its often easier to get a deep discount. Ask Is that your last price? Once youve agreed on a price, pay up. Dont back out after youve agreed on a price.
