As the #1 Gigmasters Live Band in Northern California, our mix of rock, pop, motown, disco, soul, R&B, ballads and jazz standards are proven winners at getting people out on the dance floor and keeping them there. Our active library of music is geared solely toward songs which audiences respond to on the dance floor. We constantly observe audience reaction to our music, and, if it doesn't keep the crowd on the dance floor, we pull it from the book and replace it with another crowd pleaser. Want a second opinion? Here's what some past clients have said. "All of our guests had a terrific time on the dance floor. Even the people who usually do not dance or are shy about it got up to dance because of the music! Needless to say the song choices were right on target, the sound of the band was energizing, and the whole evening and event was memorable in part to the music!" And, "... the music was just wonderful! Had everyone up dancing, just as promised! We had so many compliments on your talents!" Also, "The band stayed energetic all night and got everyone on the dance floor. I had several guests (many of whom are music connoisseurs) comment on the high quality of the musicians and vocalists."

About Us

We're a 7-piece group, with male and female vocalists, a saxophonist, and a "locked-in" rhythm section consisting of a guitarist, keyboardist, bassist and drummer. Our mix of jazz and rock musicians gives us unparalleled flexibility and a rich collective music background. To add a level of sophisticated ambience, The Sound Effect Jazz Quartet is frequently utilized during cocktails and dinner. Between the Jazz Quartet, the Sound Effect Band, and their provision of recorded music during intermissions, The Sound Effect provides a comprehensive solution to the musical needs of your event from beginning to end.

Band History

The Sound Effect began coming to fruition when Scott and Dave, now the sax player and keyboardist for The Sound Effect, got together one evening in 2004 and began discussing where they next wanted to go musically. They had played together with various Big Bands since the early 1990's, but had a common interest in starting a project that spanned a wider variety of genres. A mix of the jazz that they had been performing with other groups and the rock they grew up with became the foundation of The Sound Effect. Scott and Dave examined the song styles and song lists of other popular bands throughout the US that featured a similar variety of musical genres. The result of this study was the initial song list on which The Sound Effect would concentrate. Once the general decision on genres and styles was determined, the next month was spent determining the initial 100 songs in the song list. Scott and Dave studied the songs most requested of other bands and DJs, and the initial song list represents the most requested musical variety available. Following that, three solid months were spent writing arrangements of the initial song list, with a focus on arranging to take advantage of the instrumentation and vocal color of the band. The recruitment process also occurred during this time to fill the remaining slots in the group. In order to accomplish the desired variety in the group and not recruit solely from their contacts in the jazz world, it was decided to advertise for and hold open auditions for vocalists and the remainder of the rhythm section. The auditions were held, and the results are the current embodiment of The Sound Effect, consisting of female & male vocalists, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums and sax. The rhythm section consists of a keyboard player, bassist and drummer, all of whom come from a jazz background, and a guitarist who comes from a rock background. To this rhythm foundation, a jazz-oriented sax player is added, along with both jazz and rock-oriented vocalists. The vocalists, along with the vocal abilities of the guitarist, create a varied and talented ensemble that offers a richness and depth rarely experienced from a local live band. You can find out more about the individuals who comprise The Sound Effect by consulting the “ABOUT” page of our website.

“The experience of forming and implementing a band of any size is a formidable challenge. What is most rewarding, perhaps, is the energy and enjoyment the Band has during rehearsals and performances. The fact that we have no ego problems and enjoy each other’s company allows for a level of energy, excitement, and enjoyment in what we do that tends to be infectious for the crowds we play for.” -Scott Switzer, founder and saxophonist.

What Our Clients Say About The Sound Effect

More than anything else, our dedication to providing you with a high-quality, fun, stress-free event has propelled us to being the #1 Cover Band in the SF Bay Area. Here are what some past clients have said about us.

From Bob, the Host of a Corporate Party (4 hours Full Band, June, 2008) The group was very professional in all aspects. Listening to their music one could tell they loved what they were doing and obviously had extensive backgrounds in the world of music! I would recommend The Sound Effect to anyone looking for great music, fun people, and true professionals.

From Steve, the Groom at a Davenport Wedding Reception (Gold Package, May, 2008) The Sound Effect was great. The band was very professional and sounded great in the space provided. Our house wedding had 175 people, and every comment about the band was positive. I had several guests come up to me and tell me that it was such a refreshing change to have a band instead of a DJ, and it was fun to have them perform. We also had their jazz quartet perform after the ceremony which added so much to the ambiance of the evening. The members were friendly, outgoing, and willing to chat with guests and that put them over the top for me. I'd recommend them to anyone.

From Karen & Scott, the Planners of the Discovery Bay Yacht Club NYE Party (Gold Package, December, 2007) Absolutely wonderful. All comments positive, very accommodating. Very sensitive to needs and requests, very talented and accomplished musicians. Everyone loved the band, and I would hire you again in a flash. The difference between a group of professionals and a bunch of hacks is the ability to adapt to the circumstances, and you all did that without being asked. As we took everything down the next morning, all the helpers just raved about how much they enjoyed the music. We all agreed that the volume level was perfect, enough to enjoy and still be able to talk over.

From Laura & Ken, the Bride & Groom at a San Jose Wedding Reception (Platinum Package, December, 2007)

This band was nothing less than awesome at our wedding reception. Extremely versatile, they played as a jazz quartet during cocktails and dinner and then with the full band played all kinds of rock and pop - probably just about any song you could name. Scott is the leader of the band and is totally gracious and professional-thanks Scott. the Sound Effect is the best deal going. They are guaranteed to rock your party and they enjoy themselves too which is nice to see. Hire this band today, take it from the bride and groom - you won't be disappointed!

From Elizabeth, the Bride at a San Francisco Wedding Reception (Gold Package, October, 2007)

The Sound Effect performed at my wedding and they were simply awesome! I had several guests (many of whom are music connoisseurs) comment on the high quality of the musicians and vocalists. The band stayed energetic all night and got

everyone on the dance floor. The entire evening went very smoothly! In addition, the band leader Scott was extremely responsive to all my requests related to scheduling, special songs, etc. It was a pleasure to work with them! I bet that in a couple years, the band will be very well-known in the Bay Area and it will be difficult to book with them -- grab them fast!!!

From Rik, the Groom at a Petaluma Wedding & Reception (Platinum Package plus ceremony keyboard, September, 2007)

Responsive and organized! Enthusiastic! Accommodating and flexible! Talented and creative! A great mix of sophistication and fun. The Sound Effect is a wonderful group of musicians who made every effort to ensure that our wedding day went off exactly as we had envisioned it. They even learned a few of our favorite songs, including the first dance. We very much enjoyed working with the band, and Scott in particular made the entire process comfortable and stress free. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

From Daphne, Director of Student Activities at Foothill College (Jazz Quartet, September, 2007)

We were absolutely thrilled with The Sound Effect for our 50th anniversary celebration at Foothill. The music was perfect for the occasion. Many thanks!

From Jeffrey, the Father at a San Francisco Bar Mitzvah (Full Band, June, 2007)

The Sound Effect played for my son's Bar Mitzvah. My son spent three weeks looking and listening to at least 100 bands on the internet. We picked The Sound Effect because they were better than all the other bands we listened to and fit within our budget.

Both the kids and the adults had an amazing night. The Sound Effect and their music hit just the right tone for a magic evening with great dancing, fun and soul. They were so professional and such nice people. I have already heartily recommended them to several dear friends. We will use them again ourselves as soon as we can. They are great in every way. Scott, the band leader arranged and rehearsed some special songs for us. He was super accommodating and totally responsible and professional. Their two lead singers rock and so do their musicians. This band has heart, soul and spirit. I highly recommend The Sound Effect.

From Josh, the Chair for a School Fundraiser (Full Band, March, 2007)

Our event went off great and I received many compliments on the band. We were holding a fundraising auction for a public elementary school, which has been typically mundane and ending immediately following the auction. Having The Sound Effect for our event this year turned the whole thing around and people danced until it was time to turn on the lights. They did a fantastic job setting the mood with a great selection of music while people were perusing the auction items, eating, talking, etc. Following the auction, we dimmed the lights, the band started back up, and the crowd on the dance floor grew. At the end, everybody still wanted more, even though the babysitters were working overtime. Thanks guys,... and Melissa, our event was a huge success and we hit the number we needed to fund the new playground, with revenue exceeding any previous fundraising effort for the school.
