seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter...

Thoughts on the

Sunday ScripturesIn today’s Gospel we hear of the rulers who sneered at Jesus, the soldiers who jeered at him, the criminal who reviled him, and the people who just stood by.

At our own parish church the cross stands high. Yet, every Sunday there are those who sit in front of it and are not moved by it. Th ere are people who walk right by the cross, unmoved by it. Perhaps they’ve walked by it so many times they no longer give it a second thought.

Could it be they are unmoved because the heart of this unbelieving thief is in them? Good stewards walk by the cross, notice it and ask themselves: “All this you did for me, what have I done for you?”

Jerry Boland, Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

“Jesus remember me when you come into your Kingdom”

Today’s Feast of Christ the King marks the conclusion of the liturgical year and we launch into a new liturgical year next week with the First Sunday of Advent.

Our spiritual journey is rooted in the conviction that through baptism we are included in the Kingdom of God. We will experience the Kingdom in its totality when we enter eternity.

We are part of the process of bringing the Kingdom into being little by little in the ways we are living out our faith. This challenge is why a community of faith is so critical. We are not in this alone! It is forging relationships, in deepening our faith, in being committed to acts of justice and mercy that the Kingdom becomes real and dynamic.

Last week at the Parish Pastoral Council meeting as I was listening to various reports on our parish’s life, I was struck at how signifi cant the mission of a parish can be in making the vision of Jesus take hold. Our ministries and activities are concrete ways in which we move from the theoretical to the real. Forming our young people with a strong sense of our spiritual and ethical values is crucial. Being committed to the ongoing formation of the adult community is critical in creating a vital and alive parish.

The Kingdom is in our midst and yet to come. We live in this tension. The readings call us to a sense of urgency. Getting our spiritual house in order is an immediate invitation from the Lord not something that lies ahead in the far distant future.

We are assured in the Gospel that as we remember the presence of Christ in our lives so does the Lord always remember us.

The spiritual invitation to remember the graces of the Lord is important. Our life is a journey of building upon the foundation of faith. As we recall the graces we have we received, we are encouraged to keep moving forward.

Our embrace of the kingdom demands of us an awareness that we live in community. God calls us to be generous in our efforts to assist those who face the challenges of poverty or insecurity as a result of a fi nancial or a personal crisis.

One of the most signifi cant ministries in the course of our 100 years has been Sr. Paulanne’s Needy Family Fund. Through her vision and tireless devotion, the love and care of Our Lord has touched those in our midst who carry heavy burdens. Through Sister Paulanne’s ministry and your generous support, miracles have happened as people have been able to get through a crisis or begin the process of rebuilding their lives. Each year as we approach Thanksgiving, Sr. Paulanne refl ects at all the masses on how important the needs of the poor and those who struggle are of upmost concern. Sister always challenges us to better understand the social and cultural realities that contribute to so much suffering and poverty in our society. Recently Sr. Paulanne was honored by Loyola Academy for her lifelong devotion to those in need. She is an inspiration to all of us. We are all deeply grateful for her ministry.

This grace of remembrance is evident in this Monday’s gathering entitled, “Centennial Fireside Chat”. Karen Navarre and Sloan Salah will lead those present in seeing how much God’s grace has led us as a parish this past 100 years as stories are recalled and memories shared. Please come!

Many look forward to Russell Stern and our Music Ministry’s Concerts that are offered throughout the year. We proudly present, a Centennial Concert, marking 100 years of praising God in music, this Sunday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

This week is the celebration of Thanksgiving. I hope and pray you will be able to gather with those you cherish to praise God for all the blessings he has bestowed upon us. We have a special Thanksgiving Liturgy set for Thursday at 9:00. For those of you who are traveling, be safe. Can’t wait to see all our college students home for the holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Rev. Jerry Boland

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

100 Hours of Mercy ProgramFAQ

I’m booked until January. Can I start my hours in 2020?You can start whenever you like. Here’s what you can do now:

1) Read the Mercy Guide & Progress Tracker;

2) Read “You Did It to Me” during Advent and follow along via the bulletin; and

3) Create your Mercy Action Plan to hit the ground running in 2020.

What if I don’t complete 100 Hours by the end of the Centennial Year?No worries. The Program is not tracking hours but rather our commitments to be a more merciful community. But the 100 hours goal is to recognize our 100 years as a parish so give it your best shot! St. Therese of Lisieux said that God just wants to see you trying. If you make an effort to be more merciful, God will lift you up to carry out His will. And don’t forget--anything is possible with God!

How do I pledge my 100 hours?Once you’ve made your Mercy Action Plan, sign the Commitment Leaf card found on page 7 of the Mercy Guide or in the South Vestibule Mercy poster stand. Insert the card in the “Mercy is Love” Pledge Tree in the South Vestibule and get started. Most important, make a commitment in your heart to do little things with great love.

What’s a Pledge Tree?Check this space next week to fi nd out!

Go to olphglenview.org/100hours for resource links, downloads, and more info. Purchase books for $5 each in the Parish Center Offi ce.

Need more information? Email Jen Farber at heartsafi [email protected].

Let’s put our love into action!

100 Hours of Mercy has gotten off to an amazing start. We have received

a few questions about how to implement this program. Please see the FAQ below for answers.

EvOLve MinistrySat., Dec. 14, 9:30 amin McDonnell Hall"What Child Is This...: Historical, Literary and Theological Refl ections on the Infancy Narratives of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke"

Presented by Pauline Viviano

Christmas is often associated with warm memories of family gatherings and fun-fi lled parties. It is the time of year wishes of peace and joy come with every "Merry Christmas" greeting that we exchange. Few realize, however, that the source of anything we know about Christmas comes from only four chapters of two gospels.

We will consider the historical basis of the infancy narratives in Matthew 1-2 and Luke1-2 and focus on the literary and theological dimensions of these stories to answer the question "what child is this?" Each of these gospel writers presented the story using their choice of symbols to refl ect the deeper meaning of the nativity and convey that meaning to their faith communities.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Oh, God, when I have food, help me to remember the

hungry;

When I have work, help me

to remember the jobless;

When I have a warm home, help me to remember

the homeless;

When I am without pain, help me to remember those

who suffer;

And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency

and bestir my compassion.

Make me concerned enough to help, by word

and deed,those who cry outfor what we take

for granted.

“For I was hungry and you gave Me food,

I was thirsty and you gave Me drink.

I was a stranger and you welcomed Me….”
