Learning intentions

1. To name all the names of all of the Planets.

2. To understand what Orbit means.

3. To describe all the planets and tell me what they are made from.

The Earth is kept in orbit by the force of…

Gravity

…and by the fact that is is moving at a high velocity

The moon is a “natural satellite”. A satellite is anything the orbits the earth

Artificial satellites have four main uses:

– Communications

– Monitoring the weather

– Observing the Earth

– Exploring the solar system

Because of this spin the sun rises in the ______ and sets in the ______

The Earth is divided up into the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere:

Equator

Northern hemisphere

Southern hemisphere

The tilt of the Earth on its axis is also responsible for the seasons:

Two things happen because of this tilt:

1) The days are longer during the summer

2) The weather is warmer during the summer

THE UNIVERSE

(Basically, everything in the universe orbits around something else)

Learning Outcome

1.To know that the Earth orbits the Sun once a year and that the Moon

takes approximately 28 days to orbit the Earth.

2. To know that the Earth spins on its own axis once every 24 hours.

The Earth

The Earth is round, like a ball, but it is also slightly squashed. We say that its shape

is roughly spherical.

The Earth travels around the Sun once every year.

The Earth also spins on its own axis. The axis is an imaginary line through the

centre of the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. The Earth spins round

once every 24 hours. This causes day and night on Earth.

•It is day on the part of the Earth that is facing the Sun.

•It is night on the part of the Earth that is facing away from the Sun.

14/05/2020

The Moon

The Moon is roughly spherical, but it is a lot smaller than the Earth.

The Moon travels around the Earth. It goes round once every 28 days.

We only see the part of the Moon that is lit by the Sun. So

sometimes we see the whole Moon and sometimes we only see

part of the Moon.

The Sun

The Sun is a star and gives out heat and light.

It is roughly spherical in shape and is much, much bigger than the Earth.

The planets

The Earth is just one of eight planets that

travel around the Sun. The other planets are called Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
