Stanford University sociology professor Mark Granovetter called these people ‘weak ties’ 5. He showed they are MORE important in finding new
opportunities than close friends.

In a study of where 282 people found their latest jobs, he explained: “Individuals with few weak ties . . . will be confined to the provincial news and views of their close friends. 7. “This deprivation,” he said, “will insulate them from the latest ideas and may put them at a disadvantaged position in the labour market.”
