History of The Guild

Over sixty years ago the Concert Committee of the JacksonvilleSymphony Association sold tickets to the first concert of the newlyformed Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and on concert daywent to the Armory, cleaned the barn-like structure, and set upchairs, returning that evening to hand out program guides. TheConcert Committee became the Women’s Committee, later addingthe first Pops Concert. The performing season blossomed and programs were moved to the George Washington Hotel.

When Prudential’s South Central home office arrived in town, the concerts relocated to the Prudential Auditorium for larger audience capacity. As the Symphony’s activities expanded, the Women’s Committee was renamed the Women’s Guild, broadening its scope and increasing its membership. Pre-concertluncheons featuring discussions of artists were added to theThursday performances. The Women’s Guild’s innovative first Symphony Ball was an instant success.

Well known as The Guild by 1971, members sought new ways toenhance community participation and found success with Florida’sfirst Designers Showhouse, the beginning of a procession of exciting and profitable fundraisers.

Not all the projects The Guild undertakes are huge. Major effortsare enhanced by less demanding but very rewarding projects suchas fashion shows, including the only one we know that took placeon a super carrier. Over a half century of activities such as tours tointeresting regional attractions, trips abroad, the Nutcracker Ballet, pops concerts and pre-concert dinners have produced an important list of achievements supporting the Jacksonville Symphony. The Guild Education Committee provides a continuingsignificant community outreach, devoting itself to supplementingmusic education to grow our symphony’s audience.

This glance at our past offers inspiration for the future. There is always more to be done, achieved, and accomplished. Our members are a vital, integral part of this important goal of supportfor the health and success of the Jacksonville Symphony.
