The Smart Grid - UniServices
Transcript of The Smart Grid - UniServices
An opportunity exists to change our current paradigm of electrical energy generation, transmission, distribution and consumption: towards a future, intelligent and dynamic power electricity grid enabling improved energy efficiency, more choices and increased security of energy supply.
The Power Systems Group in The University of Auckland in active collaboration with electricity stakeholders and international standardisation bodies is developing newer automation, control and financial links between system components at macro and micro levels across power utility companies to end users.

Smart grid is the infrastructure that increases competition among suppliers by enabling advanced automation, integration of a high level of distributed resources, and the intelligent end-use technologies resulting in increased value and improved reliability. The widespread deployment of these technologies requires new capabilities in the distribution system as well as integration with overall power system operation. The key issues are the identification and realization of requirements for the technologies themselves as well as the communication, information, protection and control infrastructures that facilitate interoperability and integration of the technologies.
To facilitate widespread deployment of smart grid technology utilities need demonstrations to integrate distributed power generation, storage, renewables and demand side resources that will include both utility side and customer side technologies.
Engaging with The University of Auckland Power Systems EngineersThe Power Systems Group in The University of Auckland is able to assist utilities achieve the above goals using state-of-art hardware and software facilities and its expertise in innovations and technology developments, patents, products, simulations andanalysis.Wearecurrentlyinvolvedwithdelivering2million dollars worth of projects in Smart Grid research and development. Our participation can include:
• Smartgridpresentationdesignandperformance
• SmartEnd-usedevices
• Determinationofrequirementsfordemandsidetechnologyintegration with system operation
