The Skeletal System
• The skeletal system is the structure of your body. The
skeleton is the center of your body.
What The Skeletal System Made Of
• The skeletal system is a
system where bones
are connected to make
a skeleton.
How Many Bones Are In Your Body?
• Each adult skeleton
has 206 bones in
your body! 26 bones
in each of your feet
and 27 bones in your
hands! Your skull
has 23 bones!
Do blood vessels go through your bones?
• Blood vessels run through
the bones because the
bone cells need to have
water, food, and oxygen.
Blood vessels also run
through the bones of your
body because there is
bone marrow in your
bones. Bone marrow
creates the blood cells in
your vessels.
Types Of Bones• There are three types of bones; the
hollow bones, the flat ones, and the
solid bones. Solid bones are bones
that are not flat and aren’t hollow.
They are found in your arms, legs,
feet, and hands. Solid bones carry
the most bone marrow out of the
types of bones. Flat bones are bones
that aren’t hollow and are not round.
Flat bones don’t carry a lot of bone
marrow. Hollow bones don’t have
any bone marrow in them. Hollow
bones are found in your head.
Inside Your Bones
• Inside your bones is were blood cells are created.
The tissue is called bone marrow. Bone marrow is
a soft tissue that can reproduce blood cells.
Bone Connections
Bones are connected by
ligaments and joints. There
is two types of joints: Ball
and socket joints and hinge
joints. Ligaments are small
strings of cells that connect
different bones.
Bone Protection
Certain bones in your body protect organs. Your skull protects you brain and your rib cage protects your heart and lungs.
Your Cranium• Your head has 22 bones
in the skull and three
bones in each of your
ears for a total of 28
bones. Only 6 of those
bones move!
Your Ear BonesThere are three bones
that are in your ear. The
bones are called the
anvil, hammer, and
stirrup. The the hammer
strikes the anvil which
creates a sound that
travels to the stirrup
and creates a sound
that travels to your ear
drum. That is how sound
in your ear is created.
Your Shoulder Bones • Your shoulders
are made up of
your clavicle
(collarbone),
Vertebrae
(backbones),
and your
Scapula
(shoulder
blades).
Your Arm Bones
• Your arm bones help
support your arm
muscles. It takes two
muscles to move your
arm up and down. The
bones are the humorous,
ulna, and radius.
Your Hand Bones
• There are 16 bones in
your hand. There is 6
carpals, 5 metacarpals,
and 5 phalanges.
Your Leg Bones
• The leg bones help you walk, swim,
kick, and run. Without your leg
bones, you wouldn’t be able to
stand.
Connections
• The Skeletal system
interlinks with three
other systems. The
systems are the
Nervous system,
Muscular system, and
the Immune system.
Fun Facts
Did you know that your radius is the most common bone that gets broken?Did you know that it takes six muscles to move your arm straight up? Did you know that you have 207 bones as a baby and 206 as a adult.
