Inspiration – Mind Mapping

You will have a file on your CD called Learning Styles. This mind map was made using Inspiration. Have a look at the file to see how ideas have been organised and linked, using words, images and arrows.

What do you think of this way of presenting ideas/concepts?

Try it out!

13

What are Drop Down lists?Drop down lists allow you to make up a page of text or individual sentences with gaps where you can ask the student to choose a word. (This kind of gap activity is knows as Cloze). You might use these drop down lists for filling a gap within a sentence with an appropriate adjective or adverb. You can also offer a choice of words that can / cannot form a complete sentence. A drop down list can look like these:

Notice how character spaces have been added before and after the drop down list, so that it does not obscure the other words.

17

Page 18: The Six o’clock Newsec.europa.eu/epale/sites/epale/files/downloadresource26... · Web viewGetting started in Adult Literacy and Numeracy DAY 4 – Session Seven ICT Handouts IT1.

N.B. Drop down lists don’t appear on the printed page. The page prints out with the chosen words.

How to use drop down lists:

Open a blank page in Word.

Open the Forms Toolbar by going to the menus at the top of the screen and choosing View, Toolbars, Forms.

Form Options Padlock

Position the cursor where you want your list to appear. Click the Drop Down Form Field icon (third from left), now click on the Form Field Options icon (fourth from left). Here you can enter and change your list. Your first item could be ‘ ………… ‘ or ‘choose from: ’.

When you have finished adding to your list, you can change the order words appear in using the move arrows on the right. It is a good idea to put a couple of character spaces before and after each word you add so that they are clear on screen (rather than tight in the box). Finally click on OK.

18

Page 19: The Six o’clock Newsec.europa.eu/epale/sites/epale/files/downloadresource26... · Web viewGetting started in Adult Literacy and Numeracy DAY 4 – Session Seven ICT Handouts IT1.

You can now move on to making up a new sentence or group of sentences with drop down lists.

When you have finished making all of your drop down lists, lock the forms using the padlock icon on the toolbar. You can now test each list by moving your cursor to the drop down box and clicking on the arrow at the right.

If you are familiar with the tools for changing font colour and using highlighter ‘pens’ you might want to experiment with colouring your drop down lists. This is slightly difficult as it requires good coordination.

Later on, you may want to add more text to the page or change the drop down lists. To do this, you need to unlock the forms by going to View, Toolbars, Forms and clicking on the padlock icon.
