TROOP CALENDAR

The 2006-2007 troop calendar will be posted to the website. Because the calendar is subject to change please note that the calendar printed in the Signaler is the most current. If you have any changes or additions contact Sheila Hopkins at 301-774-4106 or [email protected].

Ski Trip – New Date! Jan. 19-21, 2007 In hopes of actually having snow this time, the Troop has moved the annual weekend ski trip back a week from the original date. The new weekend is Jan. 19 to 21, and there’s still no school the following Monday. We have reservations for 24 people at Seven Springs Ski Resort in western Pennsylvania (about 3 ½ to 4 hours away) for Friday –Sunday, Jan. 19-21, 2007. Needed: A count with names and a deposit of $50 by Dec. 18. This trip is not limited to just Scouts – invite your parents, sisters, cousins, friends, etc. The more the merrier! This is a great family outing – something for everyone. Cost is $180 for 2 nights lodging, lift tickets, Sat. and Sunday breakfast and Saturday dinner. Saturday lunch is on your own, with plenty of places to eat at the Lodge. Eat dinner Friday night and lunch Sunday on the road. You can rent skis ($26) or a snowboard ($47) for the weekend, or bring your own. Group ski lessons are $15/hour. Lessons are mandatory for any scout who does not have the snow ski/snowboard MB. This is a resort with many activities – you don’t have to ski to have fun. There is snow tubing, which is fun and requires no skill. The resort offers an activity package in place of the ski

package, which includes bowling, miniature golf and a discount on snow tubing. There’s also an arcade and shopping (and an indoor pool!) Lodging is dorm-style. Depending on where they place us, there are 6-10 beds per floor. Women and girls will be housed on a separate floor, normally with their own bathroom. Patrol Leaders: Please let me know who from your patrol is planning to attend. First come, first served. Contact person: Helen Justus, phone: 301-774-7833, email: [email protected].

Primitive Campout 2006

Scouter Dick Harris on The Wire: The itsy bitsy spider, and I think my belt's loose...

This past month our troop conducted our annual Primitive campout. This place where we camped was very new and had plenty of things to use for our shelters. The morning on Saturday was a fairly slow start. Well first thing in the morning we all met at the campout and prepared our campsites and kitchens. One of the highlights of the trip was surely crossing the stream either walking across or by walking across the wire bridge. The bridge was fun you had to spider walk across or you could get pulled across.

As more people came the individual patrols began to scout out different campsites and begin the construction of their shelters. The construction of the shelters took longer for some patrols and shorter for others. It isn’t as easy as you think. At lunch pizza was ordered and some people ate pizza and some

ate the food they brought. Around 4PM the potato canons were fired. This is always a fun part of this campout. Then after the potato cannons the patrols started to start their dinner.

Making dinner is a fun thing and the competition is always one of the best parts of the primitive.

After some long hours of cooking the judges came around to taste all the food and desserts. My patrol, Foxes, took a really long time to make our dinner. We had to wait a long time till the oil was hot enough. As the judges walked around the patrols dug in. Dinner was awesome, I hope for all the patrols. After dinner around 8PM the campfire began and we had a couple songs, skits, etc. We had some original skits and some known skits. Even the Webelos who joined us had a couple skits to contribute. We had the regular songs that everyone has heard and every patrol contributed either a song or skit. The campfire was fun and during the campfire the winners of the cooking contest was announced and the Fox patrol won. The competition was very close and every patrol had good food. After the fire the patrols cleaned up and headed across to the stream and got ready to hit the hay. Some patrols fell asleep before others.

The next morning we all got up and took down the shelters and policed our campsites. We also

ate breakfast and packed up all the patrol and troop gear. We policed the kitchen area and had a quick flag ceremony. The primitive this year was another great campout.

Scouting for Food

Saturday November 11th 2006, 40 members and family of Boy Scout Troop 264 staffed the Scouting for Food collection point in Olney, Maryland. This was a good year for collection. The Troop transferred some 1600 bags of foodstuffs collected by the 17 units of the Crossroads District into some 430 crates and loaded these onto a truck to support Manna Food of Rockville. This food will help the working poor in Montgomery County during the upcoming holiday season. Thank you to all who helped. Below is a draft list of those who helped and the hours that they worked. Any questions should be addressed to Mr. Ramienski, 301-570-1743 or [email protected]

ADOPT A SOLDIER PROGRAM

Thank you to all of the scouts and families who have donated magazines, candy and snacks for our adopted soldiers. We have also received hand-crafted cards from Brownie Troop 712 and Girl Scout Troop 1292 of Olney, MD to include in our next batch of care packages. The holidays are just around the corner and our adopted soldiers are spending them away from home and their families. Please join us by sending good cheer and well wishes to all of these young men and women. Following is the message and photo received from MAJ Christopher Lettieri. Simpson Family and Scout Troop 264:

Thank you so much for your recent care package. I greatly appreciate it and it was a wonderful surprise. I was a scoutmaster for a boy scout troop in Gaithersburg previously so your gesture was even more appreciated. I am the chief of critical care and inpatient services and run the intensive care unit at the 14th Combat Support Hospital in Afghanistan. In response to your letter, there is really not too much we need here. Unfortunately, we take care of many children who are injured as a result of the war and the austere environment. They have next to nothing so old toys are always appreciated and they definitely help these children recover. If you have a need or desire to adopt any other soldiers, there are a few more from the DC area who could use the smile. All have the same address: SFC Scott Hoffman, CPT Jennifer Maynard; SPC Samantha Loveland, CPT Leilani Manuel. Thank you again. God bless, MAJ Christopher Lettieri

Our list of adopted soldiers continues to grow…

Scouts - Please take a few moments to write cards/letters to these soldiers with words of encouragement and gratitude for all of their hard work. They like to hear good news stories from home. Tell them about our troop and all of the great scout activities we do. Give your cards/letters to Mrs. Simpson (Shark Patrol) and she will take care of sending them for you. If you need stationery, see Mrs. Simpson. Parents - If you would like to donate any items for inclusion in the care packages, please contact Mrs. Simpson at (301)774-1728 or send an e-mail to [email protected] for a list of suggested items or to coordinate pick-up/delivery. Your participation in our Adopt A Soldier Program is extremely important and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Please continue to keep the young men and women who sacrifice so much for your freedom and for our country in your thoughts and in your hearts, especially during the upcoming holiday season. Support our Troops!

CIVIL WAR WINTER CAMPOUT AND HIKE FREDERICKSBURG

December 8-10, 2006

On December 13, 1862, Union General Ambrose Burnside sent wave after wave of the Army of the Potomac’s soldiers against Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia occupying the high ground of Marye’s Heights above the historic city of Fredericksburg, Virginia. When it was over, 12,000 Federal soldiers were killed or injured, compared to 5,000 Confederate casualties. The magnificence of the Union assaults and the horror of their losses led Lee to comment that; “It is well that war is so terrible, lest we grow too fond of it.” On December 8-10, 2006, Troop 264 will camp at Prince William Forest Park and hike the five-mile Fredericksburg Historical Trail, earning a patch and medal. In addition to learning about the Civil War battle fought there, we will see sites connected with the Revolutionary War and patriots such as George Washington and James Monroe. We will leave from St. John’s on Friday evening, December 8, at 7:00 pm for the 90-minute drive to Prince William Forest Park. On Saturday, December 9, we’ll eat an early breakfast in camp, then drive approximately 30 minutes to Fredericksburg for our hike. Lunch will be on the trail. We’ll return to camp for dinner (troop cooking) and a campfire. On Sunday morning, December 10, we’ll eat a quick breakfast, pack up, and return to Olney before noon.

Cost of the trip will be $40 per person, covering two breakfasts, trail lunch, dinner, campsite and park fees, and trail patch and medal. In addition, drivers must pay a $5 per vehicle entrance fee for Prince William Forest Park. Bring extra money if you want to purchase souvenirs or books from the park bookstore. Each Scout must also bring a signed permission slip.

This is a winter campout, so be prepared for cold and wet weather. Each Scout must have a warm sleeping bag and layers of clothing. Wear warm, comfortable boots and socks (no sneakers or cotton socks). Warm coats, knit cap, and gloves or mittens are a must. Bring rain gear and a daypack with extra trail snacks, and 2 liters of water per person. Questions? Call Mr. Irvin at (301) 570-5548 or via email at [email protected].

District Fall Camporee

The Camporee was a very fun, enjoyable, and also a good learning experience. Our troop’s activity was the

stretcher race. Teams of two would build their stretcher and then put the victim “Bob” on the stretcher. The team would then pick up the stretcher and start their journey into the woods. From there they would follow yellow tape tied around trees and make their way out of the woods. Besides our station there was axe and knife throwing, archery, BB guns, Knot rescue, and first-aid. There was also a helicopter, mobile command center, and various other emergency rescue vehicles.

Arlington National Cemetery Rest easy, sleep well my brothers. Know the line has held, your job is done. Rest easy, sleep well. Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held. Peace, peace, and farewell... Readers may be interested to know that these wreaths -- some 5,000 -- are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He's done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one the poorest parts of the state.

INFORMATION PAGE Attention: Board of Review (BOR) Procedures

A few years ago we set up a new procedure for scouts to follow for requesting Board of Reviews. Being a large troop, we needed to give the adults sitting on the BORs some lead-time. Recently the procedure has been sliding and the adults are getting short notice because of last minute BORs being scheduled. Therefore we are restating our policy. FORGOT THE PROCEDURE? NO PROBLEM – It is almost always on the last page of each Signaler edition. Also, you can look at any past edition of the Signaler for this information.

BOR Any scout needing a Board of Review should call Walt Greenspon @ (301-774-5394) no later than two Sundays (8 days) before the scheduled Board of Review. Failure to give proper notification will delay your BOR until the next month. Get your Scoutmaster Conference prior to calling Mr. Greenspon. Scout dress code for BOR will include Class “A” shirt, neckerchief, slide, and scout pants (khaki or black pants can be substituted). A scout hat is preferred.

SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCES Any scout needing a Scoutmaster Conference for advancement up through 1st class, needs to contact one of the following for a conference: Mr. Kennedy 301-774-5014 Mr. Greenspon 301-774-5394 Mr. Laing 301-570-4235 Mr. Long 301-924-4365 Mr. Pitts 301-774-3208 Mr. Predoehl 301-774-0974 Mr. Culbertson 301-774-7049 Mr. Zuccaro 301-774-0824

Scoutmaster Conferences for Star, Life, and Eagle must be held with Mr. Bogan - (301-774-2768). Preparation for their BOR must include being prepared to answer skill, citizenship, first aid, and merit badge questions.

SCOUT SPIRIT for ADVANCEMENT We all recognize that Scout Spirit is hard to evaluate. We know Scout Spirit includes being helpful and cheerful, but it is more than that…it’s giving back. In an effort to assist Patrol dads in recognizing Scout Spirit, the following guidelines are offered. Our troop believes that prior to each advancement, participation in the following activities exemplify the essences of Scout Spirit:

BOR for STAR and LIFE SCOUT ADVANCEMENTS

While ropes and compasses are provided for younger ranks, by the time you are ready for Star and Life advancement, you should be responsible enough to bring your own knot rope and compass for your BOR. We are requiring all scouts who are advancing to Star or Life to bring a knot rope and compass to their BOR.

• A minimum of 1 nursing home visit • Participation in at least 1 fundraiser • At least 4 overnight outings per year

LIFE and EAGLE SCOUTS as ADVISORY BOR MEMBERS

• Good deeds done outside of scouts

The Patrol Dad, not a senior scout, is responsible for signing off on Scout Spirit prior to your Scoutmaster Conference.

If you are a Life or Eagle Scout and would like to sit on a Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, or Star BOR, as a “Technical Expert”, call Mr. Greenspon on (301-774-5394). You would be the fourth person on the Board. While you wouldn’t have a vote, you would have input into the decision-making process and add invaluable knowledge and insight by asking questions that perhaps scouters wouldn’t think to ask. This is a great way to give back to and maintain the quality of your troop.
