An Introduction to Shropshire Sheep The Shropshire has long been an integral part of the sheep scene in Britain. The breed emerged in the mid‐1800s from improvements to the native heath sheep of its home county and north Staffordshire to become the supreme meat breed of the late nineteenth century. Founded in 1882 and publishing its first Flock Book in 1883, the Shropshire Sheep Breedersʹ Association and Flock Book Society has the distinction of being the oldest recorded sheep breed society in the UK. Shropshires were exported in vast numbers to the world’s developing agricultures, especially to North America and the colonies. In recent years export sales have established a new European profile for the breed with Shropshires sold to Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland. The Shropshire breed is often used for crossing to produce prime lamb for slaughter. Docile and hardy, with a sound constitution, thus enabling efficient flock management with minimal time and effort, the Shropshire adapts well to organic and extensive systems, gaining weight mainly off grass. Lambing returns of 160‐180 per cent are regularly recorded by breeders and commercial producers alike. A major attribute is the breed’s ability to graze reliably amongst conifers and orchards without damaging the trees. Its value as an eco‐friendly, cost‐effective weed suppressant is increasingly borne out on large plantations in England, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia and Europe. Shropshire rams are robust with good conformation. They are renowned for producing strong, active lambs with quick growth rates and lean, long, top‐quality carcasses. Shropshire ewes make excellent mothers. Long‐lived, milky and prolific, they successfully rear multiples, producing lambs over many years.

Facts and Figures Wool Properties The Shropshire clips a heavy, dense fleece of good staple and fine texture. The average weight of a fleece is 3‐4 kg, and the average length of staple is 10cm. The wool has a Bradford count of 54‐56 (32 micron) and is in demand for traditional hand‐knitting.
Crossing Attributes When used as a terminal sire for prime lamb production, Shropshires are recognised as excellent crossing rams thanks to the superior conformation, growth rates and carcass quality of their lambs. Pure‐bred and Shropshire‐cross lambs are typically ready for slaughter at 12‐15 weeks old, with a typical carcass weight of 18kg and carcass classification of U3L. The resultant meat is lean, succulent and rich in flavour.

Our National Shows and Sales were held, once again, at Shrewsbury in July and Melton Mowbray in September, as part of the Traditional and Native Breeds events. Both the sales generated a lot of interest and sheep were sold for record prices.
The top price achieved at Shrewsbury was 800gns for a shearling ram (Morely Malik) bred by Claire and Graham Jakeman. The top price at Melton Mowbray was 400gns for a ewe lamb bred by Alan Oliver. A number of shows contacted me as the representative for the association to ensure that all entries of Shropshire Sheep had complied with the rules of entry of both the Agricultural Societies’ rules and the SSBA. I have already been asked to assist with this for 2012 shows as well as going forward. I therefore ask that all members of the SSBA ensure that when entering sheep classes that all rules and regulations have been complied with to ensure a full turnout of sheep at every occasion.
The breed stands were out and about again this year, not only at shows but also attending NSA events all over the country, from Scotland to the South West and as far afield as Belfast to the “Balmoral Show” for the very first time. This show is classed as one of the biggest Agricultural gatherings in Ireland. Barry Hodson the Breed Stand Coordinator, also went over two weeks earlier to help society members “polish up” examples of Shropshire Sheep to get them ready for the breed stand. This was the first time that the SSBA has attended this event and almost 40% of enquiries received in the last 12 months for Shropshire sheep or breeders interested in becoming members came from this event, showing a proactive market in the whole of Ireland. Hopefully we can maintain our stand there this coming year. We have had visits this year from overseas members from Norway, France, Switzerland and America. I believe all enjoyed themselves

and I am very grateful to all the members who hosted our guests on their whistle stop tours. Thank you all. The Challenge of Website Updating Phase 1 – This was the overhaul of the previous site to make it more user‐friendly for members, as well as providing information for possible Shropshire breeders. Hopefully members have all been surfing on the SSBA website. Since the new site was launched we have had a total of 6019 hits, which is almost 800 per month.
Phase 2 ‐ (planned for spring 2012) “Stock For Sale”, The brief for this is “users can hover with their mouse/cursor” over a map of the UK split into geographical areas and when they click on a section the site will display all “Sales Register” entries as well as breeders’ adverts for those who are located in these areas. I urge everyone to please keep us updated on animals for sale.
Society Members Currently the SSBA has 178 full members with the society also now having registered flocks in France. Publicity Materials available to members of the association ‐ The website holds electronic copies of all breed society publications and there is a small stock of hard copies available for society members of “Two Crops From One Acre” – 1 per registered member flock and “SSBA 2011 Update” (5 per registered members flock”). Postage is payable by the breeder requesting these.
To sum everything up, we have increased our membership numbers through everyone’s hard work. We’ve attended more shows to get our breed seen and talked about more. The website is hopefully more use now to the society as well as attracting new members with all the extra information that they would need prior to starting a flock (in our “Getting Started with Shropshire Sheep” document), and the website is now in a position to be updated and controlled by ourselves.

working with and meeting many more of you through the coming
year.

Presidentʹs Report to the 2011 Annual General Meeting
Despite a very harsh winter and the difficulties that created for all livestock keepers, 2011 has turned out to be a good year for the UK’s sheep industry ‐ and a very good year for the Shropshire Sheep Breeders’ Association. Whilst other farming sectors have suffered with low returns and a squeeze on margins, prices for good quality finished lambs and for cull ewes have remained high throughout the year. Some will say that the farm‐gate prices for our sheep needed to be high to offset rising input costs. But the good news is that, according to the experts, the outlook for lamb prices in the medium‐term remains very positive: Although the UK’s national flock has stabilized, ewe numbers in competitor countries are down and there is a general shortage of sheepmeat globally. I think it’s fair to say that demand for Shropshire breeding stock has been exceptional over the past 12 months. No doubt the high price for meat lambs has helped, along with another large Society‐led export order for 100 ewe lambs to France, which reduced the availability of females in the pedigree market.
Nevertheless, many of us were surprised ‐ although obviously delighted ‐ by the prices achieved at our National Show and Sale (West) at Shrewsbury. It was not just that breed record prices were achieved across the board, but that the average prices, especially for females, were so good. The challenge for the SSBA now is to maintain this high level of demand for its members’ stock. Looking at the source of enquiries that we’ve received this year, it’s clear that tree growers looking for alternative methods of herbage control in their plantations are a major potential market for our sheep. We need to continue to develop this sector, whilst taking care not to lose sight of the
-17-
-
importance of maintaining the Shropshire as a prime lamb producer. When it comes to the promotion of our breed and the success of our breed society, we rely heavily on a small group of volunteers – the officers and council members who give so much of their time to the SSBA. We are so lucky to have such a highly skilled and dedicated team: Marion Webb who looks after our finances so smoothly and competently; Alison Schofield who handles the growing number of pedigree registrations – which will now also include sheep from France. With high demand for our sheep, the job of our Sales Officer, Claire Jakeman, has also expanded greatly in the past few years. As Export Officer, Sue Farquhar has handled a series of very large consignments to overseas buyers, and this year was no exception with sheep passing through her export gathering centre en route for France, Germany and Austria. Breed Stand Officer Barry Hodson has ensured that our breed displays have appeared at many different venues throughout the UK – including the Balmoral Show in Northern Ireland, which is the first time the SSBA has ever attended this premier agricultural event. Anne Harvey has diligently dealt with orders for merchandise and supervised our show points competitions. With the expansion of our breed society, we now have Breed Coordinators in Ireland and Northern Ireland – Pat Delaney and Jean Jones. I would like to thank them both for their efforts. Jean has unfortunately had to step down from her role recently due to family commitments, but we hope to soon have a new NI coordinator in place. Two new officers were created in 2011 – breed coordinators for France – Les Newman and Liz Bowles. They made their first visit to France in the spring. The visit went well and it looks as though France could well continue to be another promising market for our sheep.

-
At this AGM, four Council Member have completed their terms of office and, on behalf of the SSBA, I would like to thank them very much for the contributions they have made to the running of the society: ‐ they are Past President Tony Baldwin, Adrian Morgan, Barry Hodson and Peter Tavernor. Barry will, I hope, continue as our Breed Stand officer and Adrian has kindly agreed to remain “on call” as our sheep‐in‐trees adviser. I hope the others enjoy their well earned rest – but will continue to be active members of the SSBA and maybe consider another term on council in the future. In the past decade, our breed society has certainly become more outward looking and many strong links have been forged with overseas breeders of Shropshires. It is, therefore, with great sadness that we were informed of the sudden death of Raimund Kohl in May this year. Raimund has been a great friend to British Shropshire breeders, and he will be sadly missed. Despite his loss, links with foreign breeder continue, and we have just had a visit from six breeders from Switzerland. I would like to particularly thank Simon Mackay and Barry Hodson for acting as chauffeurs and tour guides for this party. I would also like to thank the flock owners who entertained the Swiss visitors, as well as the Americans who toured around Britain earlier this year.
I would like to conclude this report by thanking Vice President Sue Shimwell and immediate Past President Les Newman for their support during the year, and also Simon Mackay for stepping so ably into the role of SSBA Secretary. It is not an easy role (I know!) but he has already made a very positive impact – not least by obtaining sponsorship for our lunch today, which has been kindly funded by Novartis Animal Health.
Ladies & Gentleman, thank you. Pippa Geddes

Sales Officerʹs Report to the 2011 Annual General Meeting
The sales year started very early with enquiries coming in from home and abroad and I am continuing to receive enquires even into November. Export We received an early enquiry from Switzerland but once our prices where submitted they decided it was more cost efficient to buy from France. A lot of information gathering and time is taken in securing export sales once an enquiry is received. The order form is completed then it’s all systems go for both Sue and I. We had a large society led export going into France to Benoit Gille of 100 ewe lambs and four ARR/ARR ram lambs. A private order from Austria, Hans Fischer had 26 females and 8 rams. Hans selected his sheep on an earlier visit. I have generated a total of 64 emails about export matters during 2011 on behalf of the SSBA. Home Market Prices We will all have seen very strong prices this year in the home market which often exceeded the export prices. This is all down to China taking the Austrialian and New Zealand sheep and the information to hand, this will continue, so I’m sure we are all hoping this trend will carry on. Show and Sales We welcomed our overseas guests from America, Fred Groverman and his daughter Judy; Cody and Ruth Hiemke; and Uwe and Vibekke Rutzen from Norway. Fred had an eventful trip due to airline delays so Cody stepped up to the mark and made a very successful and informative replacement as our Judge. We managed to get Fred there in time for the Inter Breed Championship so all was not lost.

We have had another very good Society Show and Sale at Shrewsbury with record prices achieved. Alderton Bob a ram lamb was sold for 750gns and was purchased by Fiona Wilson and Morley Malik a shearling ram which sold for 800gns and was purchased by Richard and Simon Spencer. Both of these animals have very high Signet indexes and have been bought with this in mind. All ewes were sold. We had new buyers at Shrewsbury who have now become members. Also people that had made enquiries earlier who I invited to the sale, came to watch and learn. This resulted in sales and membership through our Stock for Sale page on the website. Thanks go to James Thompson and his family for once again hosting our BBQ in such lovely surroundings. At Melton Mowbray another record price was set for a lovely ewe lamb bred by Alan Oliver which went for 400gns and the proud owner is Linda Brawn. Website This is working extremely well with more members successfully selling. I am happy to report that two flocks have been kept together: the Lilliput Flock and Blue Flock, and both purchasers have become members. Also a large proportion of the ewes that became available from the Sansaw Flock have been placed within existing flocks. Flock Visits The Society would also like to express thanks to the members that hosted flock visits this year and appreciate the preparation and time are all given freely. These visits are a result of requests to view certain flocks from our overseas Shropshire family: America, Norway, Switzerland and Helen Mackenzie from New Zealand. Peter Tavenor (Shebdon) James Thompson (Sansaw) Anne Harvey (Roydon) Graham & Claire Jakeman (Morley) Paul & Alison Schofield (Hornpipe) Mark & Sue Shimwell (Brereton) Diane & Paul Redgate (Moorgreen) Pippa & Peter Geddes (Alderton)

Aubrey & Marion Webb (Ushers) Les & Tricia Newman (Rode) Charles Saffell & Lorie Newman (Crown) Improvements When I first started with Shropshires 17 years ago it was extremely difficult to find any sheep with a good rear end. The majority had ‘Y’ back ends with no muscle depth, pointy shoulders and very little top line. I visit many flocks as Breed Society Inspector and I’m also a Judge and I can honestly say our breeders have undertaken a huge change and commitment in improving their flocks into a uniform, well proportioned and meat producing sheep. We can all see the popularity and growing markets for our sheep and this is all down to you as breeders… so well done. Farewell As you all know we have lost two very special members this year who many of us knew David Tordoff and Raimund Khol. Many of us will remember David showing his animals, he was very successful in the show ring and always there with a ready smile and encouragement. He took great pride in his animals and he leaves behind a very strong Shropshire Flock. We look forward to his wife, Anne, showing once again. Raimund was our main contact into Germany and was a huge supporter of our British genetics as well as a very dear friend. We will have to work very hard in keeping these links open but we have support from Hans Sandmann, who is their President, and Andreas Bruder, as well as many of the German Shropshire breeders. Events I would like to say a huge thank you to Barry Hodson and Simon Mackay who have attended so many events on behalf of the Society. A well known commentator at shows Peter Titley was heard saying at Stafford Show this year “if there is anything going on in the sheep world then you’ll see Shropshires there. All breed societies watch the Shropshires if you want to progress and be successful ”. I would also like to thank Adrian Moran for his continued support and
-23-

advice offered to our Christmas Tree Growers, which often results in sales. Northern Ireland It has taken many years trying to get into Northern Ireland’s premier event, Balmoral Show. We finally achieved it with a two pronged attack: Barry and myself. The poor man at the other end of the phone didn’t know how to get rid of us so he finally said “yes”. It’s an amazing showground as it’s based in the middle of Belfast. It was like stepping back in time and is another true agricultural show. It is hugely supported by farming members and public alike and has a great sense of bringing everyone together. There is talk that this year was the last year the event will be held in Belfast and the show will be moving to The Maze, but this is to be confirmed. We received the highest number of enquiries from any event we have attended which is really encouraging for the future. The problem we now have is that there are not enough sheep for sale. This will be one of our discussion points at our pending meeting. Council felt that it would be beneficial to hold its first meeting in Ireland to bring together its members from both sides of the border and see how we best go forward. This meeting will take place on the 25th November in Belfast and I would like to thank Dessy Henry for assisting in making the arrangements. Pippa Geddes, Barry Hodson, Simon Mackay, Pat Delaney and myself will be attending. I would like to thank Pat Delaney who is a true supporter and has attended many events both sides of the border. He travels many miles and long hours to get to venues and we all appreciate his efforts. Pat has also been rewarded with Nordmann Fir Tree Grower of the year two years running. Finally, Jean Jones our Northern Irish Co‐ordinator for her endless enthusiasm and help, and it is with deep regret that she has tendered her resignation for personal reasons. I’m sure we all wish her well and hope to see her and her family at future events. Claire Jakeman.

Regulations and Conditions of Entry into the Flock Book
1. All registered flock‐owners must keep a private Flock Book (to be produced to the Registrar if called upon to do so), otherwise they will be barred from registering their flocks, as it is obvious no truthful pedigree can be given unless such a course is adopted.
2. Rams to be eligible for entry must be named. No name which has already appeared in the Flock Book can be duplicated. If this regulation is not observed, the Registrar reserve to themselves the right of re‐naming the ram.
3. No ram will be eligible for entry unless bred by the breeder whose flock is already entered in the Flock Book or accepted for entry in any forthcoming volume.
4. No ram shall be eligible for entry unless the names and numbers of Sire and the Sire of the Dam be given, along with the registration number of the Grand Dam.
5. The Council reserve the right of declining any entry, if so recommended by the Registrar.
6. No breeder’s entry will be received unless he or she complies with the following conditions:‐
a. that the whole of the sires used in his/her flock from the date of his/her first registrations be inserted into the relevant Flock Book, and that every ram used subsequently must be entered year by year;
b. if required, satisfactory proof must be given of the means by which persons registering rams have hired or purchased them.
-30-
-
7. No pure‐bred breeding ewes can be introduced into a registered flock except from that of another registered breeder (i.e. a breeder whose flock is recorded in the last published volume of the Flock Book at the time the stock were disposed of), and the owner must furnish the Registrar with particulars of numbers and breeding, otherwise his/her entries will not be considered.
8. Only current members of the SSBA may register sheep as full pedigree animals. Females born in flocks of lapsed members may be registered only as “Grading Up” ewes, after inspection. Males born under the same circumstances may not be registered.
9. Any females to be graded up must be sired by a registered ram and are only accepted for entry to the grading up register subject to the satisfactory inspection by a nominated breed society inspector. Female progeny will only be eligible for full registration as a pedigree ewe at the third generation.
10. When a flock is advertised to be wholly dispersed, no portion of that flock shall be entered by the vendor when first entering a new flock. If any portion of the flock so advertised is reserved, the sexes, ages and numbers thereof must be fully stated in the catalogue.
11. In case the Council at any future date discover an inaccuracy or fraudulent entry, they reserve the right to cancel such entry and/or expunge the flock in question from the Flock Book.

Regulations for the Export of Sheep General
1. An Export Sale is defined as any sale where an official ministry health certificate requiring the signature of an LVI (livestock veterinary inspector) is required for the movement of the livestock.
2. If any member of the SSBA is approached regarding ANY (society‐led or private) export of Shropshire sheep, they should immediately inform the Sales Officer.
3. Society‐led export orders will be organised and managed by the Export Committee, comprising the President, the Secretary, the Export Officer, the Sales Officer, the Treasurer and the Registrar.
4. Export prices will be set annually by the SSBA’s Council.
5. Export prices must be adhered to for all sheep, whether sold as part of a society‐led export, or sold privately.
6. The Export Levy will be reviewed annually. It is currently 5% of the sale price, where inspection is involved. Where there is no inspection (for example, where Purchasers have selected their own animals) the levy is 4%.
7. All SSBA members exporting sheep, whether as part of a society‐led order or as a private sale, must pay the export levy at the relevant level to the breed society.
8. The Export Officer must keep up to date with any changes in export regulations and provide an advisory service to non MV flock‐owners who wish to export.
Stock Eligibility and Selection 1. Members must indicate on their Annual Flock Return if they
wish to supply sheep for export in the coming 12 months.
-33-
-
2. Members wishing to export must also send to the Registrar with their Flock Return, a copy of their current Scrapie Monitoring Scheme certificate. The Flock Return and the certificate or veterinary confirmation must be returned to the Registrar by 31st January, in order for members to be eligible to export in that same year. Eligible Flocks must also meet the necessary export health requirements.
3. All sheep forward for export must be registered and registration fees paid prior to the presentation of sheep for inspection or for private exports at least two weeks before the export date.
4. To ensure that all members are given an equal chance to export males, the Export Committee shall keep a list of flocks eligible to export stock (Ram Export List). Ram orders shall be allocated in strict rotation, and if a breeder is unable to supply a ram when first requested, he/she shall remain at the top of the list until able to fulfil an order.
5. If the blood‐lines of the ram do not meet the requirements of the order then the next ram on the rota will be considered. The owners/breeders of the ram(s) passed over will maintain their position in the rota until they can fulfil an order.
6. New breeders supplying sheep for export shall be added at the bottom of the Ram Export List and must wait until they reach the top before being invited to send a male for export.
7. By the end of June, all Breeding Ewes offered for export must have had their lambs weaned and be completely dried off.
Breed Inspections and Export Assembly 1. A number of breed inspectors appointed by the SSBA’s
Council will cover different parts of the country.
-34-
-
2. Inspections will ensure that eligible sheep (both male and female) meet breed standards. Inspections will be carried out on the owner’s farm by an appointed inspector, before sheep are transported to the Export Assembly Centre.
3. The Export Committee will decide upon the most appropriate Export Assembly Centre to use for each consignment, based on the location of breeders supplying stock.
4. The Export Assembly Centre will have Public Liability Insurance.
5. All breeders supplying sheep for export will be asked to sign a “disclaimer” which states that the society cannot be held responsible if animals are accidentally injured or fall ill whilst at the Export Assembly Centre, and are subsequently judged unfit by a vet for the export consignment. (Breeders can insure their own sheep for this eventuality).
6. It is the responsibility of the breeder to collect any injured or sheep deemed unfit to travel within one month of delivery to the Assembly Centre, provided the animal is fit to travel and subject to any movement restrictions in place at the time.
7. The Inspector is responsible for conformity to breed standard not for the weight of the sheep, which is the responsibility of the vendor.
Procedure to be Followed by the Export Committee for Society‐Led Exports
1. The Registrar will inform the Export Committee of members eligible to export and the size of each qualifying flock, as soon as practical after 31st January.
2. The Sales Officer will then send each member a copy of the rules and any specific health regulations or requirements,
-35-
-
reminding them that flocks must be registered with the SSBA and that registration fees have to be paid prior to the presentation of sheep for inspection.
3. On receipt of a sales enquiry, the Sales Officer shall contact the potential Purchaser(s) and send a copy of the Export Order Form and letter and, if and when required, an Export Confirmation Form.
4. On receipt of a completed Export Order Form from a Purchaser or group of Purchasers, the Sales Officer shall contact all members that are eligible to supply sheep for export by letter to ascertain what stock they have available.
5. Before allocation of the order the Sales Officer will inform members eligible to export.
6. The Export and Sales Officers shall determine how the order will be allocated. Males will be allocated according to the Ram Export List and females will be allocated pro rata to the size of breeders’ flocks.
7. Breeders supplying sheep for an export order will be contacted by the Export Officer at least one month before the export is due to leave the country.
8. A reserve ram will be nominated (next on the Ram Export List). This ram will also be tested for B. Ovis. If this ram is not required for the final export order, the member will be reimbursed, upon receipt by the Treasurer, of a copy of the veterinary surgeon’s invoice up to a maximum value of £50. This sum will be paid by the society from the export levy.
9. If insufficient females are offered by relevant flocks, the spare allocation will be divided equally amongst other participating flocks.
-36-
-
10. The number of sheep each breeder is requested to supply will be confirmed in a letter to each breeder sent by the Sales Officer.
11. The Export Officer will contact the Society Inspector(s) required, giving due notice of the deadline by which inspections must be carried out and farms and stock numbers involved.
12. Registration documents will not be released by the Society’s Registrar until all registration fees are paid by the Vendor.
Procedure to be followed for Private Exports 1. On receiving notice about a private export sale, the Sales
Officer shall inform the Export Committee of the details, and an invoice shall be raised for the export levy by the Treasurer within two weeks of the export.
2. The Vendor will send a list of sheep exported plus address of the purchaser to the Registrar, within one week of the export.
Specific to the Nominated Society Sheep Inspectors 1. The inspectors must have no vested interest in the sheep they
are inspecting. This is determined by the Registrar and Export Officer.
2. Inspectors should identify each animal inspected, and for any which fail the inspection, a reason must be given in a written statement signed by the inspector. The inspection results should be forwarded to the Export Officer, then held by the Registrar for three months after the export has been completed.
3. The Inspector must ensure that the breeder/owner is not present during the inspection.
-37-
-
4. The reasons why any sheep fail to pass the inspection will be explained to the owner by the inspector, after the inspection has been completed.
5. The Inspectors will invoice the Treasurer for fuel expenses only for the inspections. This will be reimbursed from 2% of the export levy, and the remainder of the 2% will be split between the inspectors pro rata to the number of sheep inspected.
Terms and Conditions Set For Export 1. Overseas Purchasers must confirm their acceptance of the
terms and conditions of the export order by signing the Export Confirmation Form and returning this to the Sales Officer.
2. All monies for the sheep are to be paid by the purchaser at least 5 working days prior to the date set for the export, to the SSBA Society’s bank account, by money transfer, in pounds sterling.
3. All monies are to be paid by a Sterling bank transfer and all charges are to be paid by the Purchaser.
4. A deposit of 20% is required on completion of the Export Order Form. The monies will be held in the Society’s Bank and deducted from the final balance. Should the order be cancelled, incurred expenses will be deducted before the deposit is returned
Specific to the Export Officer Following the Export 1. All sheep records must be sent to the Registrar for inclusion
in the relevant Flock Book.
2. The Publicity Officer must be informed of export consignments for the necessary promotion of the breed to take place.
-38-
-
3. The Export Officer must provide the Treasurer with a full account of export, including numbers sent and sale price, within 48 hours of dispatch.
Specific to the Treasurer 1. All monies will be paid to the Vendor(s) after the deduction
of any levies, expenses, fees etc due to the Society, within 5 working days of the export consignment leaving the UK.

SSBA Official Ear Marking System Each year starts on 1st December to run until 30th November the following year. The following requirements meet both SSBA and current DEFRA regulations. For further information refer to the DEFRA website www.defra.gov.uk/food‐farm/animals/movements/sheep or contact your local Animal Health offices. The Societyʹs official earmarking requires the following to be adopted by members: All lambs, before they are over two months old must be tagged in accordance with the DEFRA rules and the SSBA’s identification rules. The tag information must contain the consecutive number of each lamb born, the year in which it is born, the breeder’s flock designation letters and the official Defra Flock Number. i.e. 001 AA 12 UK 0301102 Any sheep to be kept for breeding must be electronically identified. This can be by either your official DEFRA electronic tag or an Electronic Bolus and Match‐Up Tag. Animals with tattoos cannot be exported. Replacement tags should always contain the sheep’s original identity. Sheep will not be accepted at shows or sales unless properly tagged/ bolused. Tags must be officially printed, not hand‐written. They can be any colour except RED. (Black is the combination to use with boluses and yellow is used for electronic tags). Each member must keep a private flock book reflecting a reliable system of earmarking, so as to identify each sheep, and be prepared to produce the same for inspection by the Society’s officers. The Society operates a computerised ewe and ram registration scheme. This assists both the Society and the flock owner in determining sire and dam lines.
